AUGUST 20, 2017 20 TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Parishioners, “Observe what is right, do what is just; for my salvation is about to come, my justice, about to be revealed,” says Isaiah in the first reading this Sunday. He goes on to prophesy that God desires every- one to enter into a saving covenant with Him, not just the Chosen Jewish people: “For my house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.” (Is 56) A poignant message for all of us today as we hear anger and division expressed by a small white minority in our country, which ignorantly invokes the atrocities of Hitler’s Nazis and openly promotes racism. Church Fathers at the Second Vatican Council made it clear, Christians have a duty of working for unity among mankind: “The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the men of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ. Indeed, nothing genuinely human fails to raise an echo in their hearts. For theirs is a community composed of men. United in Christ, they are led by the Holy Spirit in their journey to the Kingdom of their Father and they have welcomed the news of salvation which is meant for every man.” (Gaudium Et Spes #1) The Church seeks to “foster the brotherhood of all men” the document states, and this is our duty and call as disciples of Jesus. As Catholics, we need to look beyond ideological differences, recognize the God-given humanity of all our brothers and sisters, especially those we disagree with, and stand against racism, violence, and evils of the past. And we need to call our elected leaders to do the same. On a more joyful note, I am well pleased with the many projects and improvements going on at the parish. As some of you know, before I was able to move into the rectory, the windows were replaced in the upstairs three bedrooms. This was done because the noise in the rectory, from Whitmore Lake Road traffic as well as US-23, was so bad I could not sleep, not to mention the effect this had on my health condition. In fact I found out, our previous pastor, often spent the night in the church sacristy because of road noise. Parishioner Kelly Boyd, researched and found windows with sound- proofing qualities and bids were taken. The new windows were expensive but a very generous parishioner contributed $20K toward the project. Another donor paid the balance, so that it did not cost the parish anything. There is a second phase to the project which will replace the windows in the living room, dining room, and the kitchen, which I am planning on having the parish cover. Not all of these windows will be sound- proofed to keep costs down, but it will still come to about $24K. In addition, I’ve been doing some renovating in the rectory kitchen. Our Knights have volunteered some hours to strip old wallpaper and I have hired a handyman to help paint and redo the kitchen. I am using my own funds for kitchen work so as not to burden the parish with it. I am hoping to make the rectory a pleasant place to live and to open it occasionally to the parish for meetings or events. Replacing our crumbling church steps is another project that has been in the works long before I got here. We are excited to begin work on the steps this Monday. The design of the new steps will include a couple benches for people to sit on, a somewhat longer ramp which is up to code, and some pavers (bricks) with hopefully a Celtic cross design on the sidewalk area in front. I am looking for anyone who would be willing to donate NOTES FROM FATHER TOM Current Events and Updates! Continued on inside page

towards this Celtic cross we’d like to put into the ground in front of the church. I am willing to have them engrave their family name in a brick next to the design. You can see one rendition of the design in the diagram below, the parish has gone through several renditions and this one is not quite accurate (we will have more grass area, and the ramp will be all straight) but it gives you an idea of the work we are shooting for. In all this I want to honor the history and preserve the beauty of our church as well as make it practical. To get this project finished, it will require us to move to the Parish Hall for several weekend Masses. We are doing our best to prepare a worthy worship space there. Daily Masses will continue to be held in the Church, with entrance through the sacristy back door.

You may have noticed other improvements in the parish hall: new chairs in the entry area and in my office as well as a beautiful drinking water fountain with a bottled water dispenser. The upstairs and downstairs floor in the hall has been professionally cleaned by a new floor scrubber machine we acquired for this purpose. New lights have been installed in the classrooms downstairs. Much remains to be done, but the work we have accom-plished will make our parish hall a much more inviting place for parishioners and St. Augustine Homeschool Enrichment Program students. Our facilities get a lot of use and we want to keep things clean and in good shape to support our faith building activities. It has been a busy summer for me and I am

amazed at all the good things the Lord is providing for this parish, both materially and spiritually. I look forward to the beginning of a new academic year and new faith formation initiatives for adults. I have offered the position of a new DRE/Youth Minister to a very qualified candidate but unfortunately they decided to go with another job offer. We are interviewing more candidates and hope to have a replacement soon. God bless all of you, ~Fr Tom

Join Our Choir! Old St. Patrick is proud to have a strong tradition of choral singing. The choir sings motets and other choral works by the great compos-ers of sacred music from across the centuries, with an emphasis on music in keeping with the Church's teachings and musical tradition. We rehearse every Thursday from 7-9 P.M, and sings weekly during the 10:30 mass Sunday morning. We also sing for large feast days and other exceptional events, including concerts. Consider joining us this year in glorifying God with our voices.

Religious Education begins Sept. 10th! Be sure to sign up your children for catechism class. Our religious education program incorporates classroom learning, beautiful textbooks, and materials for further study at home to help educate our young people in the faith. The program encourage parents to embrace their role as the primary educators of their children. Class times are Sunday from 9:15-10:15am beginning Sept. 10 and concluding April 22nd. Cost is $50 per student with a $150 max per family. You can find registration forms and more information on our

website: http://stpatricka2.org/religious-education or you can stop by the parish office and register in person.

RCIA Sponsors We have a number of people interested in beginning the RCIA process. We need to support those who want to learn more about the Catholic faith. Consider being a sponsor at RCIA. You will have the joy of walking with someone through one of the most life-changing and impactful experiences of their lives as they discover the beauty of the Catholic faith. Sponsors should attend the weekly RCIA sessions on Mondays and support their catechumen or candidate through prayer, friendship, and helping them become acquainted with life within the Catholic community.
