I paint landscapes and gardens in light-filled, saturated color. My style has been described as impressionistic realism. I paintto capture a moment where light transforms the subject. My art materials (including framing) are artist grade archival, made to last. I've studied with wonderful artists and continue tolearn and grow through travel and art, because it is my passion in life.

I became involved in Plein Air at a paint out for OPA (Oil Painter of America). Traditionally a studio artist focusing on modernwestern genre, I found myself intrigued by the process of painting on location outdoors. In 2019 I left my graphic design careerto pursue art full time. With more daylight time I found creating outdoors in live settings helped loosen my style, increase myobservation powers, speed up my process, and give me endless hours of joy outdoors.

I now split my time between plein air pursuits and studio work, each experience compliments and strengthens the other. I amconsistently looking for ways to be involved in the local art community. Each experience with other artists both in plein airsettings and at shows inspires me with enthusiasm and new ideas for my art path.

"Life does not consist mainly, or even largely, of facts or happenings. It consists mainly of the storm of thoughts that isforever flowing through one's head." - Mark TwainVisually expressing moments (both past and present) in that storm of thought is what drives my art. There is a narrative in myhead as I paint. It's usually not a full novel, but a visual representation of a connection or idea similar to poetry or lyricsthat are open to personal interpretation by the viewer. My representational style is relaxed by abstract elements to express mypersonal connection with the subject, emotional perception, and simple interaction with the paint. I become immersed in the waycolor and texture evolve on the canvas both independent from, and in harmony with, the subject as I define lines of transition, play with light and shadow, and experiment with brush strokes.I spent my childhood in rural northern Nevada surrounded by horses, dogs, cattle, pickup trucks, rodeos, dust, rugged landscapes, and independent resilient people. I left my childhood home to pick up a degree in fine art and then, as with many artists, mypursuit of art took a back seat to a career in graphic design, creative direction, business, and raising a family. I lived invarious locations experiencing a range of cultural environments. Through it all, those rural roots remained ingrained andconstantly influence my style as my focus has returned to art.

I find that plein air painting brings a great opportunity to develop an emotional connection with the viewer. The beautiful thingis that the painting is a very personal statement of who the artist is, once a painting is completed. As an example, the simpleyet bold brush strokes may take a painter a lifetime of painting to find their unique voice that only they carry.

"Our lives are are about passion. My work is an attempt to bring that passions into our daily lives and to share it with others. In each piece or collection, I'm attempting to emote passion from the gazer's stare and to bring him into the emotional journeythat has crescendoed to that moment that is captured on canvas."

Oil Painter and Art Teacher

SHAPE, PATTERN, COLOR, VALUE, TEXTURE...These are the things that excite me when I interact with the world around me. These arethe tools that I draw from when I put my brush to canvas. In a painting, these abstract elements can come together in countlesscombinations to create a kind of visual dance...a melody for the eyes. COLORADO ROOTSGrowing up in the Colorado Mountains, with a father who painted, I have been intrigued by this visual dance for as long as I canremember, but it wasn't until 2006 that I was seriously bitten by the painting bug! Since that time I have studied my craftthrough reading and attending painting workshops with a number of nationally known artists. One of my best teachers has beennature itself, as I have spent countless hours outdoors honing my artists eye, and painting on location, or "plein air" as it isknown in the art world. TEACHING AND TRAVELINGI began to teach oil painting in 2012, and have found that I love to teach as much as I love to paint! Passing on my knowledgeand passion for paint has become some of the best hours of my week. Recently, I have expanded my teaching to include plein air artworkshops at art destinations around the world. I have found there is no better way to find creative inspiration, and awaken ourlearning capacities, than in art immersive travel.

In my pieces, I love expressing the details within a landscape that are easily overlooked. Enhancing the colors in thelandscape captures the viewers attention and encourages them to take a closer look. I first painted en Plein Air last year during quarantine as a way to escape my daily routine and reconnect with nature.Taking the time to notice the details of a landscape was so refreshing that I continue to paint outside once a month. The pond and foliage of Superior's Purple Park would be a dream to paint- thank you so much for creating this opportunity.

My experience with plein art has blossomed in the past few years, with opportunities to participate in several plein air classesand events. I first fell in love with plein air art while visiting an exhibition by Maude Mitchell, a turn of the century femalepainter who happens to be our great-grandmother. She blazed the trail for Midwest female painters and teachers, as well as beinga civil rights activist and growing up on a homestead that was part of the Underground Railroad. My father-in-law followed in herfootsteps as a plein air painter in Estes Park. I am relatively new to the plein air painting world, having only started paintingoutdoors in the past three years. I bring a modern, textural asthetic to the process and have been known to include collage in mypieces as well, moving the plein air pieces in an abstract direction.

A lifetime artist and graphic designer, I delved deep into painting and mixed media/collage five years ago. As a relatively newplein air artist, I was honored to win an award at last month's Open Studios Plein Air Fest. Currently, I am involved in my secondlarge-scale project for the North Boulder Arts District during Arts Week this year, revitalizing a fence featuring a mountainscene with other local artists.

Thank you for the opportunity.

Through most of my career, I have used oil paint in slow layered still life and figure work. That has changed drastically in thelast year and a half. I have been a high school art teacher since 2003. But when school shut down in March of 2020, I got out ofthe house and began exploring hyperlocal landscape locations, starting in my own back yard and working outward, getting to knowthe parks and natural areas near my home through my paintings. I am fascinated by the differences in mood from day to day in agiven location, and how each painting session reveals something new. Plein air is simultaneously relaxing and exhilarating:spending quiet time in beautiful places; making lightning fast artistic decisions about composition, value, color, and brushstrokes.I am excited by the idea of your festival as it brings together my love of teaching art and my love of landscape painting en pleinair. I hope to get the opportunity to coach a young artist in plein air painting as well as the chance to work in Purple Park. Thanks for your consideration.

I am an artist living in Longmont Colorado. My art is an expression of color and a way to catch the beauty of life as we imagineit. I enjoy painting wolves, trees, flowers, and aspects of nature. Fall is my favorite time to paint trees, aspens, and thechanging colors of nature in Colorado. My wish is to paint the landscape in your beautiful park. I see art as a way to add color and value to our lives in our home. Art produces a memory connection for us. We view somethingwe love and it transports us back to a time and place we enjoyed. I think that is what sparks my excitement and interest inmaking art. Art seems to have an emotional and memory connection. When I spend time talking with friends about the art in theirhome it is mostly a piece that for them connects with at time and place in their lives that provided great pleasure.

Being invited to the Superior En Plein Air Festival would be a delight and a logical extension of what I have been doing for thepast several summers. I have been conducting plein air hikes and workshops in the Roaring Fork Valley (where I live) for theWilderness Workshop, for the Basalt Library, for Colorado Mountain College and in private groups requested by my frequentstudents.

My mission as both a teacher and an artist is to connect with the natural world as a means to awakening joy, wonder, and anappreciation for the fragility of life.

My own most frequent subjects are Colorado landscapes, flora and fauna. I often paint alpine wildlife and Western ranch lifebecause they speak to me of growing up in Colorado. They also occasion a sense of incipient loss because these landscapes are sothreatened by development and climate change.

To whom it may concern,

In June 2021, I took part in Open Studio - Boulder's Plein Air Event and exhibited my entry during the group's public exhibitionat the Canyon Center in Boulder. My piece, a contemporary take on the original eight-color Pride flag, was unlike anything else inthe exhibition as it was the only piece that was not a traditional landscape. For me, painting plein air means more than renderingwhat is before my eyes, rather, it is painting that is executed plein air and is a rendering what I percieve is before me.

To be part of the Superior En Plein Air Festival & Exhibit would be an exciting opportunity to further explore the richness oflife on the Front Range and to experience the Superior life.

Every blessing,Charles Alkula

Please copy and paste into the box a brief letter of interest detailing your experience with plein air painting.

My experience with plein air painting started January 2021. It is a whole new world compared to painting in a studio. The "beingone with the elements", is an expanding experience. I find it frustrating and exhilarating.

All art is difficult. I am now 68 years old. When I was about 62 years old, the art obsession hit me. I paint almosteveryday. I have given many paintings away, thrown many in the trash, and still have a body of work. I have been encouraged by teachers to enter shows and exhibit my art. Since I have now retired, moved from Louisiana to Colorado I will begin this stage. I have sold several paintings to individuals over the years. Mostly I have painted for myself. The learning, self discoverythat painting provides, is the best therapy.
