    PREPARATIONFORWORSHIP

    Sunday, October 20, 2013

Somewhere people still make and keep promises. They choose not to quit

when the going gets rough. They stick to lost causes. They hold on to alove grown cold. They stay with people who have become pains in the neck. They still dare to make promises and care enough to keep the promises theymake. I want to say to you that if you have a ship you will not desert, ifyou have people you will not forsake, if you have causes you will notabandon, then you are like God.

    - Lewis Smedes

The gospel is not a doctrine of the tongue, but of life. It cannot be grasped by rea-son and memory only, but it is fully understood when it possesses the whole soul andpenetrates to the inner recesses of the heart.

    - John Calvin

"The time has come," he said. "The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and be-lieve the good news!"

    - Mark 1:15 (NIV)

MUSIC NOTESGabriel Piern (1863-1937) has been called the most complete French musician of the lateRomantic/early twentieth century era. In his own music Piern blended a seriousness ofpurpose (acquired in part through his studies with Csar Franck) with a lighter, more popu-lar flavor reminiscent of Jules Massenet (with whom Piern also studied). In 1890 Piern

succeeded his teacher, Franck, as organist at Sainte-Clotilde cathedral in Paris, a distincthonor for a young man of 27. His Cantilneis a lyrical ballad which uses the organs Oboeand Harmonic Flute as solo stops.

Todays choral anthem is byMary McDonald (b. 1956) a multi-talented musician fromKnoxville, Tennessee. Her music and talents have blessed choirs and congregations acrossthe country for nearly thirty years. Hymn of Peaceis built on selected texts from the well-known hymn, Be Still My Soul. The gentle, flowing keyboard accompaniment beautifullycomplements the comfort and reassurance of the text.

Our Jr. Choir joins us for the first time this season. InJesus Loves Even Methe choristershave learned one of the most important lessons in the Bible: that Jesus loves them.

Belgian organist and composerJacques-Nicolas Lemmens (1823-1881) ranks among themost important organ teachers of the 19th century. He was familiar with the Bach organ tra-dition but also had a decisive influence on the French organ tradition. His Fanfareis a driv-ing toccata from start to finish.
