    Chrysler BuildingWhen, in 1934, Margaret Bourke-White, the

    famous American photographer forLife magazine,climbed out onto one the Chrysler Buildingsenormous gargoyles, this symbol of the Art Decomovement was just four years old. For a very shorttime, it was the tal lest building in the world. A fewmonths after its completion, though, the Empire

    State Building snatched that revered title from it.This must have been heartbreaking for the automagnate, whod had the spire built in secret so itcould be attached at the last minute to break therecord then held by the Bank of Manhattan.
