Once, there was a handsome man. His name was Batara Guru Sahala. One day, hecaught a fish. He was surprised to find that the fish could talk. It begged Sahala to set it free.

As soon as the fish was free, if charged into a woman. She said that he had to keepthe secret that she was once a fish. Sahala promised that he would not tell anyone about it.They were married happily and had two daughters, one day, Sahala got very angry to hisdaughters of a fish. Read the following story from Singapore. Then answer the questions.

HakimLong ago in a faraway land, there lived a young man called Hakim. His father left him a

great fortune before he died. Being a spendthrift , Hakim bought a new clothes and precious

jewels, gave lavish treats and entertained his friends. Finally, he sold his possession and was

left penniless and homeless. All his friends left him.

In despair, he went to a nearby town to find some work. The day wore on. Nobody

wanted to employ him. One day as he was about to leave he noticed an eldery sheikh walking

down the stone steps. He looked sad. Realising that the old man was his long uncle, he cried

out with joy. When the old man learnt all that had happened to him, he agreed to take him.

However, Hakim had to promise to work hard. He consented gladly.

His uncle live an a grand palace. When they reached the courtyard, Hakim saw four old

sheikhs weeping before a closed door. As time passed, Hakim kept his promise and continued

to work hard. One by one the old sheikhs died. Hakim remained puzzled as to why they

mourned and grieved. Soon afterwards, his uncle fell and before he die, he warned Hakim,

“Whatever you do, Don’t open that closed door or you’ll bring sorrow to yourself for the rest of

your life”

After his uncle died, Hakim’s luck became even better. He married a beautiful rich girl

and lived in a perfect happiness. He had everything he wanted. One day, he passed the closed

door and stopped to look it. What’s the mystery behind this door? He wandered. His curiosity

became so strong that he couldn’t resist drawing back the tarnished bolts. He fell into a tunnel

which twisted and turned. A giant appeared befo re him, looking angry. “Fool!” he boomed,”

Now you’ve lost everything you have and you’ll regret it for the rest of your life!”. He picked

Hakim up and carried him away from the tunnel to a strange country where he knew no one

there.

Hakim soon grew weak and ill from grieving. Shortly afterwards, he died carrying with

him the secret of the closed door.

When Ali Baba's rich brother, Kasim, found

out about his brother's unexpected wealth, Ali

Baba told Kasim about the cave. Kasim went to

the cave to take more of the treasure, but

forgot the magic words to get back out of the

cave, and the thieves found him there, and

killed him. When his brother did not come back,

Ali Baba went to the cave to look for him, and

found the body, bringing it home.

With the help of Morgiana, a clever slave-

girl in Kasim's household, they were able to

give Kasim a proper burial without arousing any

suspicions about his death.

The thieves, finding the body gone, realize

times they were foiled by Morgiana, who was

now a member of Ali Baba's household, but

eventually they were able to ascertain the

location of Ali Baba's house.

The lead thief pretended to be an oil

merchant in need of Ali Baba's hospitality,

bringing with him mules loaded with 40 oil jars,

one filled with oil, the other 39 with the other

thieves. Once Ali Baba was asleep, the thieves

planed to kill him.

Resolution 2

The crisis is

resolved

Again, Morgiana discovered and foiled the

plan, killing the 39 thieves in their oil jars by

pouring boiling oil on them. When their leader

came to rouse his men, he discovered that they

were dead, and escaped.

Complication 3 The lead thief, disguised as a merchant,

befriended Ali Baba's nephew (who is now in

charge of the late Kasim's business), and was

invited to dinner at Ali Baba's house.
