Note from the Pastor
Alleluia! Christ is risen! He is
risen indeed!
With these words we celebrated
on Easter Sunday; we rejoiced
in the new life that has come to
us in Christ. It is an annual rit-
ual, one that brings family and
friends to church who might not
attend on other days. It is a day
of celebration and joy, a day for
remembering that the human/
divine Jesus went to the cross
and died, and the human/ divine
Jesus, the Christ, rose again
from the dead.
It may seem strange—and real-
ly, I know it sounds strange and
maybe even naïve to some
folks—that we believe in a cen-
turies-old tale of a life of service,
followed by a grisly death and
culminating in life renewed.
Certainly it might seem an
“idle tale” as the disciples be-
lieved about the women’s story
of visiting the grave, finding it
empty, and being told that Je-
sus had overcome death to live
again. Even at the time there
was suspicion that Jesus’ fol-
lowers had stolen his body in
order to make it appear that he
had risen from death. Some
people find this kind of expla-
nation to be much more reason-
able than one that has a super-
natural deity bringing a human
being back from the dead. And
perhaps it is more reasonable.
However, when have we ever
expected faith to be reasonable?

Isn’t the point of faith that it doesn’t
expect something to be proven? Isn’t
the point of faith that we believe even
when common sense tells us not to?
However, it is also true that it is im-
portant to know what we believe, what
we take on faith, and why.
For example, science teaches us that
even solid objects such as tables are
actually made up of tiny particles that
are moving, and that have space be-
tween them. What we see isn’t actually
solid at all! But we believe this because
scientists are witnesses to this,
through microscope-aided vision, and
have told us that it is true. Most of us
take it on faith that their witness is
true, even if we have no personal expe-
rience with those microscopes, even if
we don’t know those scientists person-
ally.
In a similar way, the gospel stories rec-
orded by disciples or by followers of the
original disciples serve as witnesses to
the life, death, and resurrection of Je-
sus Christ. We who are believers trust
this witness, we take it on faith that
this witness is true even though we
were not there ourselves and didn’t
know the disciples personally.
Because of the witness of the disciples
in the gospels, we have faith that Jesus
Christ lived on earth, that he died on a
cross, and that he lived again, reap-
pearing to those same disciples in the
days that followed the resurrection. Be-
cause these stories have been handed
down through the ages we trust in their
reliability. Because we trust, because
we believe, we also have new life, a life
unencumbered by a fear of death, a life
enriched by the knowledge that
through Jesus Christ we receive the
grace of God. Grace that renews and
restores our relationship with God and
with each other. Grace that helps us
live as Christ lived and love as he
loved. Grace that tells us that there is
nothing better than loving God and lov-
ing our neighbors even as we love our-
selves.
So say it often, and say it loud and
proud: Alleluia! Christ is Risen! He is
risen indeed.
Peace,
Rev. Sharon

On Sat, Feb. 27. I traveled to Beattyville.
Ky. For a meeting of the Board of Direc-
tors of the Buckhorn Children’s Center.
At noon we recessed the meeting to dedi-
cate a new treatment center at Beat-
tyville. This facility will be known as the
Ed & Betty Rankin Cottage of Hope,
Second Presbyterian Campus,
Beattyville, Ky. The Center will serve
Autistic Children
Dr. and Betty Rankin were long time
members of Second Presbyterian Church
in Lexington and when they died in 2012,
19 days apart, left over $300,000 to the
children and youth of Buckhorn Children
& Family Services.
Dr. Rankin was born in Louisville, Ky.
and practiced Internal Medicine in
Lexington from 1949-1994. Mrs. Rankin
was born in Indianapolis, In. and became
a registered Nurse and homemaker.
They were members of Second Presbyter-
ian Church for 62 and were married for
66 years.
Buckhorn is pleased that the Rankings
made a gift that will live for many years
and honor their generous memory. This
gift not only helps Buckhorn’s Children
but it also helps the community by
providing much needed jobs.
Don’t forget the One Great Hour of Shar-
ing Campaign this month. Remember
your gift works throughout the year
through the Presbyterian Disaster Aid
Fund.
We are now helping serve meals at the
Cornerstone Ministries in Covington. If
you would like to be a part of that minis-
try contact Rev. Sharon.

On behalf of the Stewardship Team I want to thank those members who
have given to our four PCUSA offerings. These offerings help with the
programming and mission activities of the Presbyterian Church USA.
Our church has also been a supporter of the Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance program. (PDA). Presbyterian Disaster Assistance celebrated
20 years of ministry last month.
Through your faithful giving over the last several years the PCUSA has
responded to the earthquake in Haiti as well the ongoing water crisis in
Flint, MI. I invite you to read about this ministry from the Presbyteri-
an News Service through the following article: https://www.pcusa.org/
news/2016/4/8/presbyterian-disaster-assistance-commemorates-20-y/.
I also wanted to thank those that have continued to give their pledge and
regular offering to our ministries here at home. Many members continue
to give each month and we are thankful for that. We also welcome any
Per Capita gifts at any time. The Per Capita amount for this year is
$30.00. Per Capita helps fund the ministries in the Presbytery, Synod,
and General Assembly. If you would like to give your summer pledge
and/or Per Capita gift offering just put your check in the offering plate.
Please mark it “Pledge” or “Per Capita” in the memo line. We are also
looking for a Stewardship chair this year. If you are interested, please
contact Miguel Carlin. Thank you for your support of Community of
Faith.
