DESCRIPTION

Not Just Tourists Toronto 2015 Annual Report Not Just Tourists was founded with the purpose of getting medical supplies to those who cant afford them. Ordinary tourists are given the means to change the lives of the locals they visit. After seeing first-hand the serious lack of medical supplies in Cuba in 1990, Dr. Ken Taylor and his wife Denise—from St. Catharines, Ontario—started taking medical supplies to remote areas in Cuba. Soon others who were traveling to Cuba began approaching them to take medical too, and the Not Just Tourists phenomenon started. Since it’s inception 25 years ago, it has spread with chapters across Canada and over 10,000 suitcases delivered to 82 countries. Not Just Tourists receives donations from Canada’s largest hospitals, clinics, medical suppliers and individuals. The supplies donated are typically gauze, bandages, surgical instruments, masks, gloves, antiseptics, IV kits, urinary supplies and birthing kits.

A DREAM COME TRUE!

From very humble beginnings in a garage in Markham, Not Just Tourists Toronto (NJTT) started its first year of operations in June 2014. The year proved challeng-ing as we searched for a depot downtown to pack, donors to supply the project, and volunteers to keep up with the demand.

Despite this, in its first 12 months NJTT sent 176 suitcases of medical supplies to 23 countries along with supplying 11 medical missions. With the hard work of over 100 volunteers, more than 11,500 lbs of donated supplies were delivered in suitcases and bulk shipments to areas in-need

Every suitcase a traveller carries represents the efforts of many kind-hearted individuals in Can-ada: donors of supplies, volun-teers who pick up donations and deliver them to the depot, those who manage our opera-tions, people who send spare suitcases our way, medical pro-fessionals who supervise pack-ing, volunteers who manage our telephone, email and web page, volunteers from diverse back-grounds who travel to the de-pot to sort and pack mountains of supplies and those who help store packed suitcases at home to give to travellers.

WHY WE DO IT?“Being a tourist is about me, being a traveller is about them.” Travelling changes lives. Our project is a way of giving back to the places and cultures that have shown us, as Canadian travellers, enormous generosity and hospitality. Our mission is not only to get medical supplies to remote clinics around the world, but also to create extraordinary journeys for travellers. Anyone can spend a week at a resort and forget the world around them. It takes a special person to step outside of their comfort zone and truly connect with the local community. Every suitcase is a personal journey - a reason for the traveller to develop meaningful connections and friendships which will last a lifetime. The suitcase is just the first step!

Sincerely,

Avi D’Souza, CoordinatorNot Just Tourists Toronto

8 SUITCASES TO EL SALVADOR!

“We found three very worthy medical centres for the supplies. One was a rural village, in the La Bermuda area of San Salvador, of 200 hundred people who work the fields and have a clinic built for them, that is completely empty; not a bandaid or a painkiller to be found. They have a woman trained in basic first aid and midwifery to care for them and a doctor that comes every few months. You should have seen the look on their faces when all the clean supplies came in. They had been using rags to stop wounds from bleeding.

The second location was a rural town called Aguilares. This town had a clinic with a nurse and a doctor (who was out on a house call at the time). They were so grateful to receive supplies as their one room building had very little in it. The nurse told me they frequently have nothing to offer their patients who arrive in desperate need. “Sometimes, “ she said, “we have the medication but no syringes to administer it with, sometimes no medication, just the syringes. It is very hard.”- Alexa G - Downtown Toronto

DELIVERY TO CUBA

“Once they saw the supplies, they were very excited as you can see by the picture. The hospital is a two storey, very small dated facility just off the highway in an unmarked street. I’m sure they will benefit from your donation of the medical supplies.

Thank you so much for the opportunity. We were all pretty excited and our guide was too to bring aid to the hospital.“ - Pat F - Waterloo

OUR ROOTSAfter seeing first-hand the shortage of medical supplies in Cuba in 1990, Dr. Ken Taylor and his wife Denise from St. Catharines, Ontario started taking medical supplies to remote areas in Cuba. Soon others who were traveling to Cuba began approaching them to take medical supplies too, giving rise to the Not Just Tourists phenomenon. Since its inception 25 years ago, the organization has spread to chapters across Canada and has facilitated the delivery of over 10,000 suitcases to 82 countries.

WORKING TOGETHER150 HOSPITAL BEDS TO LIBERIA

Earlier this year, Korle-Bu Neuroscience Foundation (KBNF), a charity based out of BC sent 150 electric hospital beds to set up Ebola recovery centres in Liberia. The beds were donated by UHN’s envi-ronment department after having served patients at Princess Margaret Hospital. NJTT facilitated the partnership between KBNF and UHN and was also able to provide 40 boxes of linen for the project through the generosity of Le Germaine Hotel. By working together there is no limit to what we can accomplish.

EPIC JOURNEYS

“Successfully dropped the medical supplies in a little place in the hills that was on the list – Chorro de Maita. How much it was appreciat- ed! No doctor ever on site, just a practicing nurse who runs the Consultario. I have photos but not sure how many I can send, but will attach two. I will scan and send the signed letter when I can. No issues at all with lug- gage as it was not carry-on.”- Margo Delivers to Cuba

“Being part of NJT has real-ly brought some joy into my full life. Although I’ve always preached and promoted NJT like it was my firstborn, I’ve actually never delivered a suitcase of medical sup-plies abroad. So I’ve taken this groovy Samsonite suit-case (belonged to a guy in

Barrie who probably used it in the 60s), stuffed it with very useful donations of medical supplies and bring-ing it to Latin America in search of a poorly-funded clinic that TRULY need these basic items that our Cana-dian healthcare institutions dispose of daily. So far the suitcase named” Churros” (yes, I like to put name to ob-jects) has traveled from YYZ to Mexico City (where they lost my personal luggage but not Churros), to the moun-tains among the mushroom clouds of San Jose Del Pacif-ico in the province of Oax-aca and currently sitting in my tent on the Pacific coast of Zipolite. Until then, Chur-ros and I will keep search-ing! Until next time!” - Mara Li journey’s through Cen-tral and South America with “Churro”

“Accessible by water only, Lang-shi Village is located along the Li River in one of the most pic-turesque areas of China. Due to its remote location, most mi-nor medical issues are seen to by the local village doctor, and patients often need to wait until morning to visit the larger clin-ic down the river due to unsafe boating conditions at night. The supplies and ECG machine we brought were very appreciated and will go a long way towards supporting the health of local villagers. So happy to have had the opportunity to take part in the NJT traveler experience!” - Angela Qin, Toronto- Delivered an ECG machine to China.

RESOURCES AND FINANCIAL MANAGEMENTFrom June 2014 to June 2015, NJTT did not receive nor solicit any financial donations. Suitcases were do-nated individuals and organizations such as MEC, Urban Traveller and CCI. Medicals supplies were donated by individuals, large hospitals such as Princess Margaret (UHN), St. Michael’s, Carestream Medical, Lifelabs and many other donors who choose to remain anonymous. A depot to store and pack supplies was very generously donated by the Emmanuel Howard Park United Church along with significant logistical support. General expenses such as fuel for donation pickups and admin were all paid for by the volunteers who make the project possible.

1. Distribute 30,000 lbs/500 suitcases of medical supplies to travellers and medical missions.

2. Receive more operating room supplies and medical equipment (ie. defibrillators, ECGs, CPAP machines).

3. Increase volunteers/community involvement. 4. Increase awareness of NJTT through

newspapers, magazines, medical journals, blogs, and TV.

5. Triple social media presence on Facebook/ Twitter.

6. Establish relationships with airlines to waive baggage allowances for aid.

7. Identify more clinics in need globally (249 currently identified)

NJTT is entirely volunteer-driven. Volunteer tasks include:

• Picking up donations of medical supplies and suitcases

• Sorting medical supplies• Maintaining records• Responding to calls and e-mail messages• Packing suitcases• Meeting tourists• Speaking to groups• Delivering outreach materials• Writing communications materials
