Bloustein Distinguished Scholars. WATCHUNG – Mount Saint Mary Academy in Watchung announced that eight students, Sarah Ramteke, Clare Gallagher, Stephanie Mok, Sara Traynor, Kaitlin Ryan, Emily Dura, Shannon McVeigh and Alexandra Smith were named Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholars for the 2005-2006 academic year. Bloustein Scholars place in the top 10 percent of their classes and have a minimum combined score of 1,260 or are ranked first, second, or third in their class, as of the end of the junior year. Bloustein Scholars are also eligible for $1,000 annual scholarships if they attend a New Jersey college or uni- versity full-time. The grants are not based on financial need. The New Jersey Higher Education Student Assistance Authority offers these scholarships to encourage these high-achieving New Jersey students in New Jersey colleges and universities. This hard- cover coffee- table edition features the photography of a renowned photographic artist, Walter Choroszewski, who has pro- duced numerous books and calen- dars on the state of New Jersey for over 20 years. The book features his journalistic vision, capturing the beauty and charm of the community of Westfield. This special edition is filled with over 100 beautiful color photographs of Westfield today and supplemental photographs from the Westfield Historical Society. The proceeds from the sale of “Westfield, A Celebration of Com- munity,” will enable the Education Fund of Westfield to continue pro- viding resources to enhance pro- grams for students of the Westfield Public Schools. The book is available for $25 through the Education Fund of Westfield and can be shipped for additional cost. Kathryn Solon Receives Bachelor of Science WESTFIELD – Washington Col- lege in Chestertown, Md. has reported that Westfield resident Kathryn So- lon received a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with depart- mental honors at the college’s 222nd commencement ceremonies. In addition, Kathryn received the Psychology Department Award for showing outstanding promise in the field of psychology. George T. Skaperdas, 90, Held Patents; Was Chemical Engineer and Manager George Theodore Skaperdas, 90, of Westfield died on Monday, De- cember 13, at his home. Born in New York City, he moved with his family at age one to Montreal, Canada. He returned to the United States as an adult in 1939 and lived in Westfield since 1964. Between 1940 and 1967, Mr. Skaperdas had been employed as a chemical engineer by the company formerly known as Pullman Kellogg. From 1967 to 1973, he served as its manager of pilot plant development. In 1974, he was moved up to man- ager of process engineering, and from 1975 until his retirement in 1979, he was Director of coal development. Following his retirement, he served as a consultant for a number of years, working on projects in Australia. He received his bachelor’s degree in engineering from McGill Univer- sity in 1936, his master’s degree in chemical engineering in 1938 and his Doctorate in Chemical Engineer- ing in 1941, both from the Massa- chusetts Institute of Technology. Mr. Skaperdas published numer- ous papers and articles pertaining to his field and also held various patents. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society and Sigma Xi. He also was a former member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Parish Council of Westfield. Surviving are his wife, Hope Strezou Skaperdas, and two sons, Theodore George Skaperdas of Montreal, Canada and Peter George Skaperdas of Scotch Plains. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, Decem- ber 16, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, December 17, at the Holy Trinity Greek Ortho- dox Church. Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. Every year since their sons’ graduations, the Hobbies, Cognettis, Infantinos, Cassidys, Mackos and Marsha Sheldon have come together the first week of December to reminisce and give spirited updates on their children.
