Bloustein Scholars AnnouncedAt Mount St. Mary Academy

WATCHUNG – Mount Saint MaryAcademy in Watchung announcedthat eight students, Sarah Ramteke,Clare Gallagher, Stephanie Mok, SaraTraynor, Kaitlin Ryan, Emily Dura,Shannon McVeigh and AlexandraSmith were named Edward J.Bloustein Distinguished Scholars forthe 2005-2006 academic year.
Bloustein Scholars place in the top10 percent of their classes and have aminimum combined score of 1,260 orare ranked first, second, or third in theirclass, as of the end of the junior year.
Bloustein Scholars are also eligiblefor $1,000 annual scholarships if theyattend a New Jersey college or uni-versity full-time. The grants are notbased on financial need.
The New Jersey Higher EducationStudent Assistance Authority offersthese scholarships to encourage thesehigh-achieving New Jersey students inNew Jersey colleges and universities.

Kathryn Solon ReceivesBachelor of Science
WESTFIELD – Washington Col-lege in Chestertown, Md. has reportedthat Westfield resident Kathryn So-lon received a Bachelor of Sciencedegree in Psychology with depart-mental honors at the college’s 222ndcommencement ceremonies.
In addition, Kathryn received thePsychology Department Award forshowing outstanding promise in thefield of psychology.
George T. Skaperdas, 90, Held Patents;Was Chemical Engineer and Manager
George Theodore Skaperdas, 90,of Westfield died on Monday, De-cember 13, at his home.
Born in New York City, he movedwith his family at age one to Montreal,Canada. He returned to the UnitedStates as an adult in 1939 and lived inWestfield since 1964.
Between 1940 and 1967, Mr.Skaperdas had been employed as achemical engineer by the companyformerly known as Pullman Kellogg.From 1967 to 1973, he served as itsmanager of pilot plant development.
In 1974, he was moved up to man-ager of process engineering, and from1975 until his retirement in 1979, hewas Director of coal development.Following his retirement, he servedas a consultant for a number of years,working on projects in Australia.
He received his bachelor’s degreein engineering from McGill Univer-sity in 1936, his master’s degree inchemical engineering in 1938 andhis Doctorate in Chemical Engineer-ing in 1941, both from the Massa-
chusetts Institute of Technology.Mr. Skaperdas published numer-
ous papers and articles pertainingto his field and also held variouspatents.
He was a member of the AmericanInstitute of Chemical Engineers, theAmerican Chemical Society andSigma Xi. He also was a formermember of the Holy Trinity GreekOrthodox Parish Council ofWestfield.
Surviving are his wife, HopeStrezou Skaperdas, and two sons,Theodore George Skaperdas ofMontreal, Canada and Peter GeorgeSkaperdas of Scotch Plains.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, Decem-ber 16, at the Gray Funeral Home,318 East Broad Street in Westfield.Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. tomorrow, Friday, December17, at the Holy Trinity Greek Ortho-dox Church. Interment will take placeat Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

COUNTY – The American RedCross Tri-County Chapter has re-quested that donations of newchildren’s clothing or new un-wrapped toys to support local fami-lies in need during this holidayseason.

off by Monday, December 20.Any groups or individuals who
are interested in doing a collectionof items for the holidays and who areseeking an organization to distributethem is asked to call the Tri-CountyChapter of the American Red Crossat (908) 756-6414, extension nos. 21and 24.
