Explore Kaset Fair 2016 Kasetsart University kicked off the Kaset Fair 2016 event at Bang Khen campus for people who love community and agricultural products. It was only largest fair in the nation you could find everything in one place with each zone having various products from different places. The 9-day fair (January 29 - February 6, 2016) covered a wide variety of subjects and activities for each visitor’s interest. Apart from shopping, there are also exhibitions on agricultural technology and career training. One major highlight of Kaset Fair 2016 was the exhibitions at Chakrabandhu Pensiri Building on the theme of “the drought in Thailand”, to raise the audience; awareness of the drought problem and impacts. The exhibition suggested the audience options on how to prepare themselves for the coming dry season, and pointed out such issues as low water-use or drought-resistant plants, and raising livestock farming for extra income. The following are examples of outstanding research publications by KU pro-fessors and researchers exhibited at the fair to reach out to the public with new sources of innovation and knowledge applicable in real life.

Kasetsart University (KU) is considered a green university. KU promotes energy-efficiency and social sustainability towards healthy environment by integrating knowledge, innovation, design and insight into teaching curriculum and research programs throughout the university in order to achieve a safe and eco-friendly working and learning environment. Kasetsart University encourages its faculty, staff and students to choose green products and eco-friendly services available. Associate Professor Dr. Singh Intrachooto is one of KU’s superstars who takes the initiative to lead an environmentally responsible practices, i.e., upcycling through creative design. He is behind the tremendous success of creative green innovation and eco-friendly products. His quality and marketable designs are manufactured from reclaimed materials and wastes, the things most people view as trash. By applying his knowledge and background in Architecture, he develops an upcycling process that is practical and effective in turning wastes into valuable and visible products. These creations provide ideas, inspi- ration and information to the general public. He inspires students, government agencies, private and industrial sectors to look closer at the available resources before wasting them prematurely.

All Eyes on KU

KUQ: What is eco-design in your view?Dr. Singh: Eco- stands for ecology. But to be sustainable, eco needs to refer to both ecology and economy. This is something I did not recognize at the beginning. My initial works focused on reclamation with little concern for production process and labor. That was not wise. My initial products were very expensive, not affordable by most people. For me, mar-keting is still important to be considered because I sell products. People buy my products to use and In order to be effective in environ-mental protection and to sustain OSISU, manu- facturing process need not always be exten-sive. Now, I adjust manufacturing process to optimize cost, functionality and eco-friendli-ness of my materials and products.

KUQ: We’ve heard that you want to turn Thailand into a hub of green products; what is your strategy?Dr. Singh: Right now we have developed a new eco certification Label called UPCYCLE Carbon Footprint to guarantee consumers that our products are genuinely made of scraps (at least 20% by weight), eco-friendly in terms of production, fit for use and have low carbon footprint when compared with equivalent products. This certification scheme is the world’s first. To get certified, each product must be audited and passed the evaluation criteria. The certification system UPCYCLE Carbon Footprint was co-developed by the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP), Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (TGO), the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and Kasetsart University. The label UPCYCLE Carbon Footprint has been promoted in five countries: Australia, Germany, Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan. UPCYCLE Carbon Footprint products have already been used by a prominent fashion entrepreneur like Eileen Fisher in her SoHo store in New York and will be used in all 60 branches globally.

KUQ: How do you plan to develop Kasetsart University’s Scrap Lab in the future in order to spread the knowledge?Dr. Singh: I have recruited some new junior lecturers to join the team and their approaches are insightful and refreshing. For example, we are adding lectures about business strategy planning and managing waste materials as well as life cycle assessment for designers. We are collaborating with the industry to find new solutions of using waste materials in manu-facturing. We currently are developing an upcycling network with nearly 40 hospitals, clinics, or healthcare facilities from all regions of Thailand to upcycle the medical wastes (mostly are clean packaging) at the sources.

KUQ: Last question, what is your suggestion for our youth or new generation for living GREEN?Dr. Singh: Environment is important to us all. We hear and read so much about protecting and saving the planet earth. The easiest practice like waste separation and sorting can really help recycling process but we haven’t really done it well in Thailand. There are many things you can also do in your daily life such as avoid long shower or releasing waste water into river or water sources or purchase eco-friendly products or even reduce consumption. Stop lavish spending can save a lot of energy and reduce waste already. If you can change yourself you can change the world.

KUQ: How do you start when designing from wastes?Dr. Singh: I like to reclaim materials, which have the least value, heading for landfills or incinerators because these materials will very soon become environmental burdens. I must explore possibilities through experimenta-tion. A lot of experimentation! We use all sorts of physical manipulations using familiar tools and processes such as sewing, pressing, chop-ping, weaving, any available technique to help us see potentials in the scraps. We do not jump into design right away. Exploration and ex-perimentation will offer novel techniques and innovation, something beyond our initial thoughts.

KUQ: What is the relationship between design and the environment?Dr. Singh: They are so closely related. Design decision has impact on the environmental im-pact. We use energy, raw materials, water and chemicals for manufacturing. We use, repair and replace the products. I am an architect and designer, I teach sustainable architecture but discovered that we trash monumental amount of debris from our supposedly green buildings. Clearly, in practice, architects are destroying the environment. That was why I started reclaiming these off-cut materials in my architectural works in 2005. It was not easy. My upcycled materials were not appreciated. So I started to turning those materials into other things such as lighting and furniture and it worked! They become very popular and I was able to export my work abroad right away. I think people like my products because they are unique and eco-friendly at the same time. I became known as an industrial designer even though all my trainings are in architecture. I think it is because people see my furniture more frequently than my buildings. Archi-tecture takes time.

The International Affairs Division (IAD), Kasetsart University organized a training program called KU CAST on January 7-8, 2016 at Meeting Room No. 303, the Vajiranusorn Building, the Faculty of Agriculture, Bangkhen Campus. The program concentrated on knowledge and skills required for carries in international offices. Nine distinguished speakers were invited to share their professional expertise with the participants, most of whom had had some background in international affairs work at both the management and operational levels. There were totally 80 participants from 33 faculties and offices.

On January 15, 2016 at 9.30 am.-12.00 pm., the International Affairs Division (IAD), Kasetsart University organized its first of annual committee board meeting, where Dr. Sampan Silapanad, Co-Chairman of the World Association for Cooperative & Work-Integrated Education and Vice-Chairman of the Thai Association Cooperative Education (TACE) was invited to give a talk on “Exploring International Cooperative & Work-Integrated Education: International Modalities & Models” at the Thira Sutabutra Conference Room, Kasetsart Golden Jubilee Administration and Information Center.

122 international and Thai students who participated in the program discussed their expe-rience on exploring international cooperative and work-integrated education. This type of education is a structured method of combin-ing classroom-based education with practical work experience or work-based learning. This integrating method is considered to help students to make the school-to-work transition, and is recognized as an educational best practice for the university either at the international level or domestic

level. It helps producing qualified graduates for the workplace as well as helping student to apply their learning experiences to their future work.
