ATTRACTIONS AND ACTIVITIES IN STAVANGER AREA The Stavanger Region boasts many scenic attractions, among them the Lysefjord, Solastranda Beach and the mountains of Preikestolen and Kjerag.

Klosterøy - Utstein Abbey In the fjord to the north of Stavanger are numerous islands and islets. On the little Klosterøy, which is linked with the larger island of Mosterøy by a bridge, is the Augustinian abbey of Utstein (first mentioned in the records in the 13th century), the best preserved monastic house in Norway. Klosterøy can be reached from Stavanger by motor launch.

Stavanger Cathedral In the center of Stavanger, at the north end of Kongsgata, stands the Cathedral, the most important in Norway after Trondheim Cathedral. It was built at the end of the 11th century by Bishop Reinald, an Englishman also known as Reginald of Worcester (d. 1135), as a three-aisle Romanesque basilica. The choir was rebuilt in Gothic style after a fire in 1272, and the whole church was renovated in the 19th century.

Valbergtårn To the north of Stavanger's Market Square, between Vågen and the East Harbor (Østre Havn), is the Holmen peninsula, the oldest part of the town. In this area, near Kirkegata, which runs north from the Cathedral, stands the Valbergtårn, an old watch-tower on the highest point in the town (views; exhibition of arts and crafts).

Archaeological Museum To the southwest of the Stavanger Municipal Museum, in Storgate, are the Archaeological Museum (with a special exhibition, "Kaleidoscope") and the Vestland School Museum (old furnishings, equipment and teaching material).

The permanent exhibition at the Museum of Archaeology gives an introduction to Rogaland’s prehistory with the help of antiquities and other archaeological finds from the Stone, Bronze and Viking Ages and up to the end of the Middle Ages. It shows objects from the more than 11,000 years of habitation in Rogaland, one of Norway’s richest archaeological fields for ancient civilisations. An English catalogue is available.

Lysefjord To the east of Stavanger, beyond the Høgsfjord (pleasant trip by motor launch from the Strandkai), lies the Lysefjord, a cleft in the mountains 37km/23mi long, up to 2km/1.25mi wide and up to 457m/1,500ft deep, with bright green water. The fjord is enclosed by sheer walls of rock rising to above 1,000m/3,300ft.

DINING AND WINING AT STAVANGER

NB Sørensen’s Damskipsexpedisjon

Skagen 26 T: 51843820

One of the better places along the waterfront, this restaurant serves everything from red mullet to pork ribs, with a seasonal lunch menu that’s excellent value. The atmospheric indoor dining area is ideal when the weather turns, and locals swear that the food and service is better upstairs.

Bølgen & Moi Norsk Oljemuseum, Kjerringholmen Town Centre T: 51939351

The imaginative menus in this stylish restaurant include monkfish, lamb and veal, while the lunch specials are huge – the shrimp sandwich in cilantro and lime marinade (Nkr139) can only be described as massive. Although there are set menus in the evenings, you can also choose à la carte.

Sjøhuset Skagen Skagenkaien 16 T: 51895180

Also along the waterfront, this 18th-century former warehouse is the venue for great seafood dishes, although the cooks also do meat dishes. The oven-baked salmon (Nkr245) would be our pick for mains. The outdoor tables are tempting, but inside has more character.

Attractions and activities in Haugasund Area

Dokken Open Air Museum Dokken Open Air Museum is located just five minutes from the town centre on the little island of Hasseløy, which is linked by bridge to the mainland. It is an authentic recreation of historic Haugesund. It contains themed exhibitions that enable the visitor to learn more about the living and working conditions in the town during its heyday as a centre of herring fishing during the nineteenth century. You may also see a selection of working boats from the region. Guided tours are conducted during the high summer season.

Haugaland Panorama Film Visitors to Haugesund will find this attraction right in the centre of town, where five special screens mounted at "Little Maritim" in the Rica Maritim Hotel show a specially shot panoramic film. The film was made by Ivo Capino and records a virtual helicopter flight which allows you some of the most dramatic sights in the Haugaland region including Risøy Bridge, Pulpit Rock and Folgefonna Glacier. The film is shown all year round. It is suitable for the whole family.

Haugesund Art Gallery Haugesund Art Gallery (or Haugesund Billedgalleri) is to be found in the heart of the coastal town of Haugesund. It is located by the town park. The gallery owns an important collection of art from both Norway and overseas, much of which is on permanent display. DINING AND WINING AT HAUGASUND

Lothes Mat & Vinhus

Lothes Mat & Vinhus must have the most central location in Haugesund - right on Smedasundet sound - and most probably the best cuisine in town.

The restaurant building dates back to 1850. When restoring the building, we focused on retaining the original style both externally and internally, allowing us to provide an authentic atmosphere, filled with local charm, good food and drink - we even have our own ghost. The building has been home to Lothes Mat & Vinhuset since 1989 and, since that time, we have maintained a very high gastronomic profile. We only make use of first-class local ingredients - fish and shellfish caught at sea off the west coast of Norway and meat from local suppliers.

Smedasundet

Haugesund's waterfront promenade, Smedasundet, is almost entirely given over to restaurants, giving the area an agreeable hum whenever the weather's warm. Any Haugesund restaurant worth its salt morphs into a bar as the night wears on.

NB Sørensen’s Damskipsexpedisjon

One of the more architecturally distinguished buildings along Smedasundet, Sørensen’s has Norwegian staples with creative twists such as fillet of monkfish with vegetarian lasagne or soy-and-honey-marinated pork neck.

Smedsundet 90 T: 52 70 00 50

To Glass

There aren’t many reasons to drag yourself away from the waterfront, but this achingly cool restaurant and wine bar is one of them. Try the entrecote sandwich (Nkr159) for a filling, but affordable meal.

Old Prison, Leirvik The Old Prison at Leirvik lies in the centre of the main settlement of Stord. The fine old building was erected in 1864 and was used as a centre of punishment and correction for about a century. You can visit it now and see some reminders of its past. Its current use is as a wine cellar and a restaurant. Its an unusual and stimulating place to get something to eat and drink.

Stord Maritime Museum You will find Stord Maritime Museum down by the harbour in the centre of Stord, on Nattrutekaien. It traces the rich history of shipping and boat traffic in this island community. The permanent exhibitions here place particular emphasis on the technical and industrial aspects of boat building in this region, such as the manufacture of engines. The site is administered by the Sunnhordland Museum.

Bryggeloftet & Stuene The restaurant Bryggeloftet & Stuene originates from 1910 when the property Bryggen 11 in Bergen was built. In those days, the restaurant at ground floor was a part of what was then a hospice at Bryggen. Ever since it opened, the same family has managed the establishment.

Bryggestuen at ground floor with a seating capacity of 90 guests, gradually became a popular place to eat. Although the inhabitants of Bergen represent a large number of our guests, numerous tourists have always found their way to Bryggestuen. Here, our prime location has played an important role. Increased tourism to Bryggen and Bergen has resulted in tourists now constitute a large part of our customers base during the summer season.

The tenements in the Bryggen area each consists of several smaller trade houses, each run by a merchant with a journeyman and apprentices. All of them lived in the house.
