WISE — Anyone whosaw the first inningFriday night at ShupeField in Wise might havethought the game wasgoing to be a high-scoringbaseball game betweenthe Central Warriors andthe J.I. Burton Raiders.
That turned out not tobe the case. At least it wasnot the case for one team.
The Warriors (9-4, 4-1)dominated the contestafter the first inning andwent on to defeat theRaiders 9-1 in the

Both teams startedfreshmen pitchers,Thompson for Central andMatthew Branham forBurton (4-8, 0-4).

WISE — The CentralLady Warriors did not doanything to hurt theirchances of winning atleast a share of theLonesome Pine Districtregular-season softballchampionship Thursday.
The Lady Warriors (13-4, 4-1) pounded out 13 hitson the way to a 6-2 LPDwin over the J.I. BurtonLady Raiders (6-11, 1-4)at Bill Dotson Sr. Field.
Central can clinch atleast a share of the districtcrown with a win atClintwood on Thursday. They can claim the LPDtitle outright with that winIF Union loses to eitherBurton Thursday or toClintwood next week.
The main thing rightnow is for the LadyWarriors to continue toplay solid softball, accord-ing to Central coachRandy Shortt,
“We’re hitting the ballreal well,” Shortt said.“We feel like we’re solid
all the around on offenseand defense and we’recompetitive right now.”
Central showed itsfocus at the plate inThursday’s victory, withsenior Laura Gipe going3-for-3 at the plate with anRBI and Khelsea Salyersfinishing 3-for-4 with fourRBIs for the LadyWarriors.
Central also got twohits apiece from LoganReynolds, KaitlynStratton and ReaganDavis.
“The bottom line wasthey got more hits than wedid and they were able toput some rallies togetherand we didn’t,” said LadyRaider coach Jon Bright.“We’re improving andwe’re getting better. I stillthink we’ve got a good ballteam. But Central out-hitus today. They got the bighits when they neededthem and we didn’t get thebig hits.”

Burton looked to pull off theupset early in Friday’s game.
The Raiders opened the gamewith a single down the left field lineby lead-off batter, Malik Miles.
Burton picked up another hit inthe inning, but left a runner strand-ed.
Miles stole second base andscored on a single to center field byWill Cassell to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
The three hits and one runwould be all the offense theRaiders would generate on thenight.
Thompson’s pitching and theCentral defense dominated the restof the game.
Thompson struck out sixRaiders and allowed no hits andonly two base runners over thefinal six innings for the win.
“Nate hasn’t been on the moundin over a week. In the first inning, I
believe he just wasn’t in hisrhythm. After the first he started tohit his spots, his velocity increased, and he got stronger as the gamewent along,” said Central coachBrian Mills. “We played gooddefense tonight also. Mark Dotson,at second base, was not in the bat-ting lineup tonight. Jake Flanary, has been hot with the bat and weinserted him into the lineup as theDH for Dotson. Mark is a goodfielder, a team player and he takespride in his fielding.”
Shawn Gardner and Caleb Millsalso returned to the Warrior lineupafter missing a few days due to ill-ness and injury.
In the bottom half of the first, the Warriors scored three runs onjust one hit by Shawn Gardner.
Central was aided by two walksand a hit batter and a key throwingerror by Burton.
Double plays by the Raiderinfield in the second and thirdinnings erased potential scoringopportunities by the Warriors tokeep the game close.
The Warriors scored twice in the
fourth inning on a double by LoganJohnson, a single by Flanary, a sac-rifice bunt by Austin Schank andsingle by Gardner.
Central scored three more in thefifth inning on an infield hit byMills, a single by Johnson, a Burtonerror and hit batter.
Central scored once more in thesixth inning on a triple by TylerMullins and a RBI-single by pitchhitter Tyler Robinson.
“Central has a good ball club.We made some costly mistakesearly and allowed them to getahead. That took us out of our gameplan which was to be aggressive,”stated Burton Coach Jim Adams.“We made some good defensiveplays and turned two double plays.I thought Branham threw well asdid Adams once he settled down. Both are freshmen.
“We started three freshmen andtwo sophomores tonight so we’re ayoung team and I believe we havegood days ahead.”

CLINTWOOD — The Clintwood LadyGreenwave collected 10 hits and scoredin every inning of the game Thursday totake an 11-1 nondistrict softball win overthe Haysi Tigers in a battle of DickensonCounty rivals at Dennis Baker Field.
The game was called after six inningsbecause for the 10-run rule.
The big inning came in the fourthwhen Clintwood (8-6) scored four timesto break open a close 3-0 game on the
way to the 10-run rule game shortenedvictory over the Lady Tigers (0-9).
Lady Wave pitcher Erika Counts, scattered three hits over six innings andwas credited with seven strikeouts in thewin, while The Lady Tigers’ Anna Davisstruck out six Clintwood batters in thegame.
“We’ve had our ups and downs thisseason. We never know how the team’sgoing to react or play from game togame,” stated Clintwood coach DavidVanover. “The game was close for a fewinnings. I think that coach Spangler has
them moving in the right direction. They’ve made some improvement sincewe played them a few weeks ago.”
While Haysi seems to be improvingfirst-year head coach Spangler said histeam is still learning the ropes.
“I believe were getting better witheach game. We put the ball in play todaybut we’re still making too many mis-takes and errors and you can’t do thatagainst a good team like Clintwood,”said Spangler. “Anna Davis pitched agood game but we just couldn’t makethe plays behind her to keep it close. I
liked the way Kaillen Deel played today. She had a triple, a single and a walk inher three at bats and scored our run. Ihope we can continue to make progressand can play better by tournamenttime.”
The Lady Tigers were led by Deel’stwo hits, while Emily Puckett also had ahit.
Bailey Robinson, Kara Rose, andKaitlyn Phillips each had two hits for theLady Greenwave. Clintwood also got hitsfrom Shay Mullins, Kelsey Conley,Taylor Fleming and India Hillman. u

CASTLEWOOD — In abattle of lefty pitchers, the Castlewood defeatedThomas Walker Pioneers10-0 in CumberlandDistrict baseball actionon Thursday.
The game was calledafter 10 innings becauseof the 10-run rule.
The Blue Devils (4-8,4-2) managed a victory infive innings behind stronghitting and pitching, andonly one error in thefield.
Thomas Walker (3-13,2-5) struggled on offensewith only two hits andcostly errors.
Castlewood’s lefthanded pitcher, DakotaGizzel finished the gamewith six strikeouts and awalk.
After the first batter, who reached first base onan error, it appeared thatthis was going to be atough game for theDevils. But, Castlewoodended the threat andplayed flawless the rest ofthe way.
“We are definitelyplaying well. The onlyconcern we are having isconsistency. One game,we do better, the next, wefall apart.” saidCastlewood coachJonathon Salyers.
Scoring five runs in thefirst inning, behind basehits from Reid Edmonds,Craig Jacobs, BlakeSloce, and Gavin Collins, the Castlewood confi-dence grew to enable thedefense to step up.
One run in each of thenext two innings, behindhits from Sloce andCollins gave the Devilsthe incentive to beardown and finish the gamein only 5 innings.
With a purpose in thebottom of the fifth, TylerAustin slammed a hitdeep to center field toscore Collins.
Dillon Hartley thendelivered a hit to left fieldto advance Austin.
Edmonds followedwith a base hit and Jacobscapped off the game witha hit to left to scoreEdmonds.
“We were able to putthe ball in play today, butwe still had too manystrikeouts. But we’reimproving.” Salyersremarked.
Thomas Walker strug-gled throughout thegame, producting onlytwo hits.
Left-hander JustinCatron took the loss onthe mound.
“We are not having asmuch success as wewould like. We have 14players and only three ofthem have ever playedbaseball before,” saidPioneer coach BrianLee. ”We are lacking inknowledge of the game, experience, and funda-mentals.
“It’s been five or sixyears since we had a win-ning season. We just haveto learn how to win. Weare improving and that’sdue to the kids’ hardwork.
“Basically we have afootball team trying toplay baseball.” u

Hi. I’m Eddie. PAWS savedmy life. Literally. Since it’sNational Pet Week, and sinceI’d make such a great pet, I’mspreading the word -- PAWSand the Wise County AnimalShelter have a lot of us who’dmake wonderful pets. PAWSdepends on donations and needsyour help to help more of us.I happen to see first handwhat PAWS needs. More
people to help find us forever homes. More foster families to take care of usuntil the right home comes along. Volunteers to hold adoptions and make surewe’re all going to good homes. Folks to get us places, like to the vet or toanother rescue and closer to our forever homes. Everybody gets spayed andneutered. It’s a rule. We like it that way, I’m here to tell ya. PAWS evenruns vans to take us to get fixed. Yeah! Of course, PAWS needsmoney. It takes money to take care of us and the bills, like forfood, medical care and medicine. They need donations, too, of food(and snacks, please), flea meds and supplies, like collars andleashes. Get in touch to help out. Tell ‘em Eddie sent ya. Yeah, Eddie. Thehandsome young terrier, sweet, with big ears and a heart of gold. Yup. Got myshots. Got some good looks and good attitude, too! Your PAWS pal, Eddie.

ting from within and could be a hazardto passers-by.
The tree was like a landmark in ourcommunity. I know others will missseeing that beautiful old oak tree, espe-cially Jerry Collier since he told merecently that when he was just a kid, anolder man in the community gave hima couple of red dogs—that was thepills’ name—and also a beer. The manthen let Jerry, a 17-year-old, drive.
Jerry said he could see one road, then several roads, so he unfortunatelyran into the road that led to the oaktree, taking a huge chunk out of thetree. Jerry lived and became strong, aman, a husband, father, carpenter anda preacher. You see how he recoveredfrom the error of his ways and how theoak survived so Jerry could repent and
tell the tale. I have spared the name ofthe careless old guy who gave the pillsto our little buddy, Jerry.
SISTERS TRAVEL TO BRANSON
Gretta Jones and her sister Beckyrecently took a trip to Branson, Mo.,just to get away and enjoy some niceweather and fun. They were surelyfooled on the weather—very, verychilly, almost miserable. They did hearsome good music, had fun beingtogether, so their trip was not a totalwash-up.
If you readers recall, a few monthsback the same two women went toFlorida, but also had bad weather. Itwas just too cool for the SunshineState. Maybe the next adventure willhave perfect weather. Let’s suggestHawaii for the next trip. u

COEBURN — The Gate City BlueDevils snapped a nine-game losingsteak Friday with a 5-1 nondistrictbaseball win over the EastsideSpartans at Alumni Stadium.
The win was only the second ofthe season for the Blue Devils (2-13).
“I think our team gave a greateffort tonight. We’ve had two reallyhard practices this week. We’vebattled a lot of things this seasonand the kids seem to be comingtogether now,” said Blue Devil headcoach Robbie Perry.
Gate City behind the pitching ofJohn Brooks, kept the Spartans (9-5) hitless through three inningswhile posting four runs.
It was not until Nick Sturgill sin-gled to left field in the bottom of thefourth inning that the Spartans wereable to reach base.
Gate City opened the game withtwo runs in the top of the firstinning.
Blake Hillman singled to centerfield advancing Cory Franklin, whodrew a leadoff walk to second base.
After both runners advanced toscoring position, Franklin scored ona sacrifice fly by Hunter Wolf.
J.T. Starnes then singled drivingin Hillman to stake Gate City to a 2-0 lead.
Chandler Pendleton relievedBrooks in the bottom of the fourthinning and continued keeping theSpartan bats at bay.
While the Spartans were havingtheir troubles at the plate, Gate Citykept the pressure on by scoring onerun in the second inning and anoth-er in the third when Michael Collier
walked and advanced to second on apassed ball before scoring on a sin-gle by Brooks.
Starnes led the Blue Devil attackcollecting three hits on four at-bats.
The Spartans got on the score-board in the bottom of the sixthinning.
Caleb Riner singled andadvanced to second on a ground ballby Nate Minor.
Aaron Sexton then drew a two-out walk. As Sexton stole secondbase Riner was able to beat thethrow home giving the Spartanstheir only run of the game.
Eastside collected four hits onthe night, while allowing the BlueDevils 11 base hits.
“I was really happy by the wayJ.D. Slone pitched tonight once hegot that breaking ball going,” saidEastside coach Chris Clay. “He did agood job keeping those guys off bal-
ance. The true story of the nightwas our offense. It was non-existenttonight. We’ve got to find some guysthat can drive in some runs andthat’s kind of what we are lookingfor right now. With what few hits wegot, we just didn’t string any togeth-er and that was the tale of the tape.”
The Blue Devils scored theirfinal run in the seventh inning.
Gate City’s Cory Franklinrelieved Pendleton in the bottom ofthe seventh inning allowing a singleto Kobe Lawson, however, was ableto retire Riner to end the game. u
