Bright Ideas for Entertaining

WWhen the weather is nice, many people get the urge to entertain just a little more frequently. Interior design expert and TV personality Genevieve Gorder says the best approach to warm-weather entertaining is to make your space shine with a comfortable, approachable style.

Help brighten up entertaining spaces for sharing good times and making good memories. Try one of these easy entertaining ideas to make your home feel warm and welcoming - putting your guests at ease as they raise a glass to your hosting skills:

your home. Arrange beautiful wine bottles on a vintage silver or brass tray, add wine glasses and two taper candle holders.

With a bit of mood lighting, glassware and beverages, a bar is just that simple and guests know they can pour their own wine.

entertaining large groups, such as stacking coasters on the mantle to expand your typical entertaining space.

wine and cheese, create a buffet table that works your guests along the line visually. Start at the highest point with flatware and rolled linen napkins in tall vessels, then use cake tiers for flatbreads and crackers, followed by cutting boards for cheeses and accompaniments at the lowest point in the middle. Move the eye line back up again at the finish with vases of nuts and bottles of wine.

dining table to make your presentation really shine. Think about mixing metals like brass and silver with white glass to create a powerful triad. Then use mismatched plates and chairs to bring a homey and casual feeling to a gathering.

wine tasting. Ask guests to bring a bottle of wine from the same region - such as Washington - and then spend the evening trying different wines and learning which you like best.

By CHRISTINE BOCKELMAN | CTW FeaturesWriting on the walls is no longer taboo in

offices, schools and playrooms across the country, thanks to a new crop of high-tech writable surfaces. These new paint and glass products have all the advantages of whiteboards – no messy chalk dust, easy erasability – with the added benefit of not having to hang a big shiny white rectangle in your meticulously designed space.

One new development in writable surfaces is dry-erase paint. With just a few coats of paint, any surface – from hard plastic to drywall – can become a dry-erase surface.

A few dry-erase options come from Ashland, Mass.-based IdeaPaint. Transparent and environmentally friendly, the IdeaPaint Clear product can be used on a painted or wood-paneled wall, and still allow the original wall treatment to shine through. It is applied with a roller brush and takes five days to cure.

“One client used it to paint over a calendar grid on a wall, and a [music] composer used it to turn an entire wall into a blank sheet of music that can be used over and over, ” says Karen Lyon, IdeaPaint’s vice president of brand marketing.

The dry-erase paint can be pricier than its chalkboard predecessors – it costs $225 to cover a 50-square-foot area with IdeaPaint.

A less expensive option comes from Vernon, Ill.-based Rust-Oleum. The company’s dry erase paint costs just $25 for about 12-square-feet of coverage. It can be used on surfaces like drywall, metal, cement and wood and is widely available at home improvement stores across the country. The catch: It’s only available in white.

Prefer not to break out the paint rollers and drop cloths? For a more permanent investment in writable walls, try a glass whiteboard. This piece of glass can be mounted on the wall, to be written on and erased as you please.

Fort Worth, Texas-based Clarus creates its “glassboards” made of a specially engineered piece of tempered glass that doesn’t stain. The boards come in an array of colors, including clear, and can turn everything from kitchen backsplashes to custom tabletops into a dry-erase surface.

With expansive options in whiteboard and chalkboard technology, any homeowner can start to appreciate the writing on the walls.

Beyond chalkboard paint, the ‘writable’ surfaces category has plowed ahead into new, colorful alternativesWrite On!

Express yourself: Some dry-erase paints like IdeaPaint can be transparent, so any surface becomes a dry-erase surface, but maintains its original look and feel.

Choosing the Right RugBy CHRISTINE BOCKELMAN | CTW Features

Cold-weather changes don’t have to be limited to your wardrobe; as fall and winter roll in, add some warmth to your home with a new area rug.

A rug can be a big investment, so take tips from the experts.

Start the search with color and style. “Some people want to lighten up a dark floor, so the background color of their rug is lighter. Some people don’t want to draw attention to the rug, so they choose a color that blends with the flooring,” says Mindy Miles Greenberg, owner of Encore Décor LTD in New York and a designer on call for Karastan Rugs and Carpets.

Next, size up the rug. Do you want one that sits under the furniture or one that lays in front of the coffee table?

“The biggest reason we see for returns is that customers decide the rug is too small,” says Kim Barta, brand manager for Shaw Living, the area rug division of international flooring company Shaw Floors. “Typically,

they think they really want the 5x8 [size rug] but get it home and want the 8x10 instead.”

Size is largely personal preference, but there is one hard-and-fast rule. If you are putting a rug in a dining room, make sure it overhangs the table by at least two feet. Otherwise, you risk chairs toppling over because of the uneven surface, Barta says.

Fiber is important, too. Synthetic fibers like nylons and olefin are color-rich, fade-resistant and affordable, Barta says. Wool, although more expensive, is natural, renew-able, fire-resistant and tends not to crush under the weight of furniture.

“You have to consider how a rug fits your lifestyle,” Miles Greenberg says. “How does it feel barefoot? Do you have children and pets?”

Once you’ve selected a rug, don’t forget a pad. “A rug will crawl across the floor without one,” Barta says.

Trying to cozy up your living space? An area rug is a perfect addition, if you choose wisely

The great unifier: This patterned rug brings together the room’s color palette with its red accents and chocolate background, while still allowing the hardwood floors to shine.

Attics are misleading. An attic

remodel seems like a magic trick that expands a house without buying new land. Homeowners look at the empty space and picture a new bedroom orliving area. What they don’t see is the work that goes into making that transformation. “People think that all they need is to throw down some plywood and they have a room,” says Jeb Breithaupt, president of Shreveport, La.-based JEB Design/Build. “They don’t account for what the possible problems might be.” Those who don’t do the proper research beforehand, or who hire contractors who aren’t experienced in attic work, could easily blow a remodeling budget. Breithaupt says, “They encounter a problem that they hadn’t thought about, and suddenly, the price of their project doubles.” Michael Gasch, owner of Madison, Wis.-based Artisan Remodeling, understands homeowners’ desire to transform attics and basements. “[They] are

a great way to increase active space in a home. It is always smart to squeeze every square inch out of your house’s footprint,” he says. But attic remodels do come with their own challenges. Gasch recommends beginning with a thorough plan for the space. “A simple way to start is to break things down to structure and function. What is the room for and how do the mechanicals function?” he asks. Determine whether or not the attic can structurally support a living space. An attic can be deceiving, Breithaupt says: “They think that they’ve already walked up in their attic. They already store stuff up there. But it’s a different type of load when you’re actually living up there.” Most attics have joists that support their ceilings, he says. These joists, though, might not be adequate for supporting the furniture and constant walking that an attic floor will endure if homeowners turn it into a bedroom or other living area. If the attic isn’t structurally sound enough for a remodel, you’ll need to beef up the ceiling

supports or start over from scratch, something else that will add to the final cost of an attic renovation. Another concern is installing utilities that the unoccupied attic never needed. When preparing a budget, you must account for everything from plumbing pipes and air-conditioning ducts to security or telephone wiring. Lastly, don’t forget to think of long-term goals and problems. Some homeowners picture a master bedroom in the attic with beautiful skylights, without

considering how long they’ll be staying in that house. The stairs leading up to that attic-level master bedroom might not seem so daunting at first, but that won’t always be the case. “The older you get, the less stairs you may want to endure,” Gasch says. Besides creating a livable space, homeowners will need to build some way to escape the attic in case of fire or other emergency. This usually means a back stairway or fire escape. The attic-obsessed can

rest assured, though. With a solid plan from the beginning and the right professional help, they can successfully turn rarely used attic space into functional and aesthetically pleasing rooms, Gasch says. And because there is no traffic going past an attic, the rooms at the top feel more private and separate from the rest of the home’s activity, Gasch says, creating a retreat for sometimes harried homeowners.

The Magical Attic ActTurning that attic into a bedroom or living space? Make sure to do your homework first

Decor & Decorating: Express Yourself with Color

A Are you courageous when it comes to decorating your home? Many of us would like to be as creative as possible but need guidance to venture out from the neutrals – and into something more powerfully beautiful. Color is the most important tool in the

toolbox, say experts, who often add that one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to infuse the home with color is with paint. “People often feel intimidated by this type of expression and that’s why so much of our country is beige and

off-white,” says Genevieve Gorder, a renowned interior designer and color expert. “We need to remember that color is a great balancer in a space; it’s a juggling act between neutrals, grounding shades, highlight and accent.” When choosing a paint palette for any room, Gorder notes, there are four key components to ensure powerful effects while keeping a harmonious balance: neutrals, which are the beige or creamiest versions of any color; the grounding shades, like blacks, browns and grays; the highlights, like the bright white on moldings and window trim; and the all-important saturated pops of color which add life to any room. “You might want your pop of color to be a powerful accent wall,” Gorder continued. “Then, you can complement it with neutral upholstery and grounding accents in the accessories to balance it all.” For additional guidance, inspiration – and even liberation – here are this decorator’s favorite tips.

color into your home but feel intimidated, start small with paint or decor accents that are inexpensive. This way, you can always change your mind if you fall in love with something new or want to refresh the look of your room.

to find color families and their complementing shades. A popular way to find an accent, for example, is to go a few shades darker in the same family.

There’s a lot more to choosing a bathroom vanity than you might think. First and foremost, do you even want one? Pedestal sinks are pretty, popular and don’t take up much valuable floor space. However, the downside is they don’t offer much space for storing bathroom essentials like toilet paper and extra hand towels.

Q. What’s the history of your company? With offices and showrooms around the world, Granite Transformations offers new and exciting alternatives to traditional countertops, backsplashes, floors and more. The first Granite Transformations franchise opened in 1996 in Perth, Australia. Consumer response was overwhelming, and we’ve grown across Australia and New Zealand, and then into the United States in 2001. Now, Granite Transformations has nearly 100 showrooms across the U.S., and we’re adding more showrooms every year. In 2004, the company began U.K. operations and is planning to grow throughout Europe.

Q. What makes your product special? Granite Transformations brings a fusion of the world’s finest granites, combined with advanced manufacturing skills, to produce a strong, permanently sealed surface that’s backed by a lifetime warranty. From kitchens to bathrooms, fireplaces to bars, granite gives you a sleek, sophisticated look. The experts at Granite Transformations will do it for you in a way that makes sense and accommodates your needs. Installation is quickly, honestly, and with the utmost professionalism. Your new countertops are fabricated in their shop so that none of the time-consuming mess occurs in your home. On installation day, they are already finished ready to install. Your beautiful new – heat, stain and scratch resistant – countertops are permanently bonded to your old ones. A Granite Transformation to a standard size kitchen countertop and backsplash is typically completed in just one day.

Q. How do you take care of it? This mold and mildew resistant material is amazing in showers, on vanities or tub surrounds. There is no special maintenance or cleaning needed with a Granite Transformations surface. Installation is incredibly fast as the material is installed over your existing tiles. You get a new look in two to three days. A full scale kitchen remodeling, where cabinets are removed and new cabinets installed, can take weeks or months to complete. Compare that with kitchen cabinet refacing. By refacing your cabinets instead of replacing them, you will save time, aggravation, money and wear and tear on other kitchen elements, such as the floor and countertops. With cabinet refacing, the project is often completed within two to four days, and the dust and dirt is kept to a minimum.

Q. What makes your company stand out? Our revolutionary product line has been extensively tested and proven to be heat, stain and scratch resistant. The surface makes cleaning easy and you can cut your vegetables right on the countertop without fear of leaving cut marks. You can even place a hot skillet right on the countertop.

Because there are no grout lines, you have no fear of bacterial build up or dirty grout lines. Granite Transformations’ unique slabs are cut exactly to fit your existing old tile or Formica style countertop. Using special adhesives, the slabs are adhered directly to the countertop surface. While each project varies depending on the size of the space to be transformed, the installation of a Granite Transformation standard size kitchen countertop counter and

backsplash should take approximately 1 to 2 days. Because there is usually no demolition involved, there is minimal disruption and mess. Our expert consultants listen carefully to your needs, and their experienced installers finish the process quickly. They even back it up with a lifetime warranty.

Call Granite Transformations today for a free in-home consultation or look online to see the incredible variety of styles and colors or stop by the Spokane Valley location.
