Fun with Art Jarred Lee, 9th gradeMs. Kitty Baker was here in Shungnak August 27-30. She was here to teach art to grades Pre-K through 12th. She introduced our

students to art techniques. Students enjoyed doing art with her, and she will be back before Christmas. She will teach more art techniques with students when she returns.

CROSS COUNTRYJenette Custer and Trent Barr, 7th grade

Cross Country is the hardest sport in the world because it is just the runners against the road. Shungnak Cross Country team ran in Regional Meet at Noatak on Sept. 22. Bryant placed 8th, Brent came in 3rd, Trent placed 14th, Julius came in 5th place, Jenette came in 19th, and Summer placed 8th. Izaiah did not get to go to the Regional Meet because of travel arrangements. Runners learned not to stop and to run harder to get stronger.

Bryant at School BoardBryant Sun, 9th grade

Bryant Sun, our NWABSCD student representative, attended the school board meetings in Kotzebue on August 27-31. He said the school board complimented him on the questions he asked about the topics they brought up. Some topics were the Kivalina Road and the ban on kids traveling in 35 degrees below zero. This occurs in the whole region. Another topic was the grants to get every student in the region I-pads, so they can read the books on the I-pads. Bryant learned a lot about the Kivalina Road. It should be completed in 2022 as the school is quite a long way from the new location. Bryant thinks being a student representative is good practice for a future job

New Club!!Zara Lee, Donovan Barr, and Dominic Barr, 7th grade

Shungnak School is sponsoring an Art Club this year. The grade levels are 2nd -5th and 6th-12th. Meetings are held from 3:30-4:30 on Wednesdays. The grade level groups take turns every other week. Students are having their Art Club meetings in Mrs. Highley’s room. Students in Art Club draw, color, paint, and create. Then they can display art that they have created on their own. Roger wants more students to join clubs because students need to do something after school each day. Art Club is something all students can do.

ReadyStar at KotebueKeon Barr, 10th gradeKeon Barr and Bryant Sun went to ReadyStar in Kotzebue September 10-21. They stayed at the ATC dorms and took classes at the Kotzebue High School to earn credits in a program called ReadyStar. They designed stickers, wooden tags, and dog tags using a program called Rhino. Bryant and Keon built a Lego robot and programmed it to stop on a red square, to drive around a blue loop, and to go into a warehouse to avoid a hazardous area. They both enjoyed the experience.
