Our courses

Business with Management coursesThis suite of courses is ideal if you would like to build upon the experience gained in your undergraduate degree to acquire a higher level of knowledge and understanding about business principles.

There are three optional pathways to choose from; International Management, Financial Management and Marketing Management . This highly-flexible course means you don’t need any previous knowledge of your chosen pathway to apply .

In the first semester every pathway follows the same broad range of business disciplines . In the second semester, half the course is core but the remainder comprises a diverse portfolio of optional units offered through other departments within the University . The final semester is based on a Master’s dissertation .

Business with International ManagementMScThis pathway is suitable for students who wish to maintain a broad-based and generic management education that includes an explicitly international focus.

Students consider issues of ethics and accountability that challenge multi-national organisations and the role played by corporate social responsibility; the varying approaches to marketing that are relevant to organisations working within a dynamic global environment and of strategic and international HRM perspectives . There is a broad choice of topics to select from for their dissertation, as long as the area of study has an international context .

Business with Financial ManagementMScThis pathway introduces students to the role of finance in modern organisations.

Students are also given an introduction to the development and interpretation of financial statements, and gain practical exposure to these activities as part of a business simulation . Students also consider the international context of finance, through consideration of the international financial environment and its associated areas of risk, the international financial markets, the role played by institutions in this international arena, foreign exchange investment, as well as mergers and acquisitions within an international setting . The dissertation topic on this pathway will be finance related and supervision will be given by a subject expert from this academic area .

Business with Marketing Management MScThis pathway will give students an insight into the strategic role of marketing within organisations, developing the required knowledge and skills to undertake a strategic analysis and organisational evaluation as an underpinning for the development of a competitive marketing strategy.

Students will develop an understanding of the role of relationship marketing, and by doing so recognise the importance of customer retention and the internal customer . Consideration is also given to marketing processes within the context of a globalised world, with an understanding of the business implications . By doing so, students can develop an appreciation of the varying approaches to marketing that are relevant to organisations working within a dynamic global environment and the effect these challenges place upon marketing planning in an international context . The students also undertake a dissertation in a marketing context, supported by an academic supervisor with relevant expertise from this subject area .

Business Administration (top up) BA (Hons)This course builds on your achievements gained from either a Higher National Diploma in Business, a Foundation Degree, or comparable qualification, giving you the opportunity to continue studying business at degree level.

Throughout the course you will develop a broad understanding of business while developing a range of key skills that today’s employers expect from top-calibre graduate recruits .

Modules studied include Applied Business Ethics, Strategic Management and Leadership and Strategic Supply Chain Management .

The course uses a variety of teaching and learning strategies to encourage and develop your independent learning skills . It is assessed by a combination of examinations, coursework and a project .

The project is supported by taught sessions on research methods . It allows you to select a topic of interest to you and engage in academic research to deepen and apply the theoretical knowledge you have gained throughout the course .

Upon graduation you could enter a career in consultancy, marketing, health management, human resource management or operations management, as well as have the skills to set up your own business .

International Foundation Programme (IFP)Do you want to graduate from Northumbria University but do not have a high enough IELTS score? Do you need to gain the entry qualifications to study an undergraduate course? The IFP improves your qualifications and English language skills so you can begin your studies in the UK.

The IFP offers progression to a wide range of courses at Northumbria University and a qualification that can be used when applying to other universities .

Each class has eighteen weekly sessions including individual and group guidance tutorials and one-to-one academic tutorials . In addition, you will engage in independent study involving directed and self-directed learning

Additional informationIf you will be aged under 18 at the start of the IFP, you will need to include a consent form signed by your parent or legal guardian with your application . When applying you will need to choose your course and state this on the application form . If you are accepted you will receive one offer letter for the IFP followed by the appropriate degree programme . Once you have successfully completed the IFP and achieved the required grades, you can gain direct admission onto your chosen degree at Northumbria University .

Pre-sessional English If your academic qualifications meet the entry requirements for your chosen undergraduate or postgraduate course but your English language level doesn’t, this course will bring your language skills up to the necessary grade.

You will be tested on arrival and will join one of three courses depending on your language level and your proposed course of study (bachelors or masters) . You will study for one, two or three semesters . Progress to the next level or onto your chosen academic course depends on a mix of continuous assessment and end-of semester examinations (not IELTS) .

Teaching and learning takes place in seminars, lectures, tutorials and workshops . In addition, you will engage in independent study involving directed and self-directed learning . Each class has eighteen weekly sessions including individual and group guidance tutorials and one-to-one academic tutorials . You will also be expected to do at least an equal amount of out-of-class study

By the end of the course you will feel confident in researching your subject, dealing with a range of academic texts, attending lectures, taking part in seminars and tutorials, and producing extended written academic assignments .
