The wildlife hide in the West Woods at Wallington offersyou the chance to get close to native red squirrels, butfor a uniquely Northumbrian wild experience, visit the‘Beasts of Chillingham’. This herd of white cattle are the last wild herd in Britain and thought to be the solesurvivors of the cattle that roamed through the forests of Northumberland centuries ago. These remarkablebeasts have never been touched by human hands, soare completely untamed.

Between May and July, the Farne Islands and CoquetIsland offer amazing views of 23 species of seabirdsincluding approximately 37,000 pairs of Puffins andRoseate Terns, one of our rarest nesting seabirds. You will often see grey seals resting on the rockswatching boat trips sail by.

‘Northumberland, the land that’s just as good with the lights off ’

Northumberland International Dark Sky Park is a vastarea which combines Northumberland National Parkand Kielder Water & Forest Park. It is the largest darksky park in Europe, meaning it is one of the best placesto enjoy the wonders of the night sky.

Between October and April is the best time to visit, asthat is when the night skies are longest and clearest.Allen Banks, maintained by the National Trust, hasrecently been awarded the status of Dark Sky DiscoverySite ensuring that this ancient semi-natural woodlandremains a perfect place for a spot of stargazing.

You can discover Northumberland’s wild spirit whilststaying in comfort in one of the traditional yurts, shepherds huts, and tepees found throughoutNorthumberland.

The herd numbers around 100 beasts, making them rarer than the Giant Panda.

Northumberland’s turbulent history is evident in our stunning landscapes. From the invasionand unrest of the Roman occupation to Viking invasions, civil wars and Reiver raiding, all have left their mark on the county. Now a different kind of ‘wild spirit’ can be found in Northumberland: rare wildlife, miles ofcoastline, rolling hills and beautiful countrysidejust waiting to be explored.

Castles, forts and pele towers dot our countryside.Scattered across the county are fortified bastle houses,in which farmers lived above their livestock in anattempt to protect them during Northumberland’slawless Border Reiver years. Alnwick Castle is home tothe Duke of Northumberland to this day, and BamburghCastle was once the ancient seat of the kings ofNorthumbria. Chillingham Castle, reputedly the mosthaunted in England, is still intact, unlike the spectacularruins of Dunstanburgh and Warkworth.

Visit the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and experience theserenity of Lindisfarne Priory, a far cry from when VikingRaids pillaged Northumberland’s coasts, massacringthe monks on the island. Nowadays, you can enjoyspectacular, tranquil views from 16th CenturyLindisfarne Castle.

Hadrian’s Wall, spanning 73 miles, leaves a lastingimpression on anyone who visits. Along the wall arearchaeological sites and museums telling thefascinating story of Rome’s rise and fall, and mysteriesyet to be solved, like at Housesteads Roman Fort where you can speculate about the ‘Murder House’.

Our rugged landscapes, hay meadows, wild moors, and coastlines are home to an abundance of wildlifespecies that are often rare elsewhere. With two areas ofOutstanding Natural Beauty and England’s most tranquilNational Park, Northumberland has an abundance ofwildlife such as red squirrels, otters and black grouse.Wonderful tea rooms and cafes serving delicious home-baked treats provide the perfect end to a wild day ofexploring in the National Park; guilt-free cakes - thelonger the walk, the bigger the slice!

Pilgrims Way ( Patrick Norris )

The Northumberland Coast PathDiscover castles, golden beaches, wildlife and history on theNorthumberland Coast Path. It is made for walking. If youwant something remote, head north of Bamburgh Castleand past Stag Rock to a wilder coast. The sea is on oneside, sand dunes are on the other and on the far horizonstands Lindisfarne Castle. Alternatively, the path from Crasterto Dunstanburgh offers a gentler walk, and features apleasant stretch along the dunes. Keep an eye out for swirlsof lava that can be seen just above high water mark!

Hadrian's Wall PathHadrian's Wall Path National Trail, is an unbroken 84-mile signposted trail stretching from coast-to-coast, from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in thewest. It passes through some of the most beautiful parts of England - from rolling fields and rugged moorland tothe vibrant cities of Newcastle and Carlisle. If you don'thave time to walk the whole route, there are many circularwalks available which take in some of the most scenicareas around the Wall.

St. Oswald’s WaySo much history: Hadrian’s Wall at one end, the Holy Islandof Lindisfarne at the other, and some of the best walking inNorthumberland in between. Perhaps the best section andcertainly the most magical is the Pilgrims’ Way, thetraditional path between the mainland and Lindisfarne. You’ll never forget it, three miles across the sea, barefoot ofcourse, the mud between your toes and the seals ‘singing’you a serenade as you walk in the footsteps of the saints.

St Cuthbert’s WayThis cross-border route links the two landmarks perhapsmost associated with the iconic religious figure, MelroseAbbey in the Scottish Borders and the Holy Island ofLindisfarne. The route is among the most varied andexciting of its type - encompassing everything from therugged terrain of the Cheviot Hills, to the enormous sandybeaches of the Northumberland coast. Furthermore, thetrail is dotted with ancient castles, churches and abbeys, as well as charming villages and an array of wildlife.

Pennine WayAs you follow England’s backbone into the country’snorthern outpost ignore the ‘go back, go back, go back’protestations of the red grouse, listen for the plaintive callsin the spring of the ‘Pennine Whistler’, or golden plover, and the eerie cries of the curlew, then immerse yourself inthe song of the soaring skylark, as you cross the ancientfrontier of the Roman Empire and the route ahead takesyou through England’s most tranquil place, theNorthumberland National Park.

Ranging from challenging long distance trails with cosy pubs and welcoming guest houses en route, to leisurely circular walks through pretty hamlets and wildlife rich coast andcountryside, Northumberland has it all. We asked a few of Northumberland’s walking experts to give us their highlights on Northumberland’s long distance walks.

If you are staying anywhere in Northumberland the widehilltop vistas and sheltered valleys of NorthumberlandNational Park are never more than 30 minutes away, andwith 700 miles of footpaths and many more of traffic freeroads, getting out and active is full of rich rewards.

With less than 2,000 residents in the 400 square milesrunning from Hadrian’s Wall to the Cheviot Hills on theborder of Scotland, Northumberland National Park isjustifiably the country’s most tranquil area. This is alandscape of farms, forests and heather moors, withcrystal clear waters rushing down from their source inthe high peat bogs into some of our best salmon rivers;all lying under the canopy of dark night skies cracklingwith stars that form Northumberland International DarkSky Park.

There are opportunities for everyone to blow away the cobwebs from a gentle stroll ending with a cosytearoom in one of our pretty and historic villages, to ahike along Hadrian’s Wall or the Cheviot Hills. Thesehigh points are both crossed by the Pennine Way which celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2015 as thecountry’s first National Trail.

Cyclists love to take advantage of the quiet country lanesand challenging climbs of the Hadrian’s Wall Cycle Pathor the Reiver Cycleway 10 into the North Tyne Valley. This year we have added the 120-mile Sandstone Waywhich takes you across the stunning, heather-cladSimonside Ridge.

The nice thing about the National Park is that there areas many picturesque spots for just playing or sitting andstaring as there are for vigorous activity, some offeringeasy access for wheelchairs and buggies such asWalltown country park on Hadrian’s Wall or the BreamishValley in the heart of the Cheviots.

If you’d rather not drive, you can see some of the bestviews by taking the bus. AD122 runs a regular servicebetween railway stations and the sites of Hadrian’s Wall, while Spirit Buses links the villages of the scenic CoquetValley.

Northumberland’s embattled past remains evidentin the stunning landscapes of the Cheviots. In Elizabethan times the border between Scotlandand England was home to the notorious BorderReivers for whom interclan robbery and violencewere a way of life. Farmers lived in a state of constantalert and built fortified homes called Bastle Houses inwhich they lived above their precious livestock.
