LindisfarneGospels

Northumberland will be celebrating the Gospel’s return with a calendar of events throughout 2013.

Dedicated to the North East’s most famous saint, Cuthbert,Eadfrith the artist scribe created a beautiful book representingthe golden age of design and craftsmanship in Northumbria.Written in latin, with a word-by-word translation into the OldEnglish added in the 10th century – the Lindisfarne Gospels are the oldest surviving translation of the gospels into theEnglish language.

After Cuthbert died the Lindisfarne Gospels and his remainswere kept safe by travelling across the North East and parts ofCumbria and Yorkshire before being laid to rest on Dun Holm, now the site of Durham Cathedral. During 2013 a new trail willrecreate this epic journey.

See www.visitnorthumberland.com/gospels for moreinformation and a list of events celebrating the return of theLindisfarne Gospels in 2013.

The Lindisfarne Gospels are a magnificent exampleof medieval craftsmanship. This beautifully illustratedmanuscript was produced in around 700 AD on the island monastery at Lindisfarne (Holy Island)and over 1000 years later will return to the region, forming the centrepiece of an exhibition on Durham’sUNESCO World Heritage Site from 1 July to 30thSeptember 2013.

Lindisfarne Priory (English Heritage)

Many people now come to Northumberland to get away from it all, but in the 600s even Holy Island, a 5 mile walk acrossdangerous tidal sands wasn’t remote enough for St Cuthbert. He lived with only the puffins for company on the treacherousFarne Islands and was even known to spend nights praying in the freezing cold North Sea! You’ll be glad to know ouraccommodation is cosier these days, but you can see where St Cuthbert lived and the places his followers visited as they fledbloody Viking raids with the priceless Lindisfarne Gospels andCuthbert’s still ‘incorrupt’ body over 100 years after his death.

If you still want more of St Cuthbert after that, you could take awalk to St Cuthbert’s Cave, then travel on to visit the rather grandSt Cuthbert’s Church, Norham, our very own ‘Durham Cathedral’.Pick up (or download) a copy of the ‘Footsteps of the Saints’ trailfor more ideas in this area. Further west in beautiful Redesdalethere are more mediaeval St Cuthbert’s Churches (he was apopular chap) in Bellingham, Corsenside and Elsdon - each withits own special charm.

Cuthbert probably went to school at the monastery St Aidan hadalready established on Lindisfarne, and when he was 15 foughtwith King Oswald’s army to protect Bamburgh Castle. He wouldhave visited St Aidan’s Church, Bamburgh which has anatmospheric interior, dramatic windows and memorials toVictorian heroine Grace Darling. Archaeologists are still workingaround Bamburgh Castle to uncover secrets of this ‘golden age’.

It was probably the Romans who first brought Christianity into the region, evidence of this has been found at the ongoingexcavations at Roman Vindolanda. Roman stones were re-usedin the building of many churches in this area – you can see acomplete Roman arch inside St Andrew's Church, Corbridge and more Roman evidence at Hexham Abbey.

Later in 627, Bishop Paulinus spent 36 days baptizing the localcommunity in the River Glen, near the Anglo-Saxon site of AdGefrin, the palace of Northumbrian Warrior King Edwin andwithin the shadow of the once-sacred hilltop of Yeavering Bell.Nearby in the Church of St Gregory the Great, Kirknewton youcan see an ancient stone carving of the Adoration of the Magi, apparently wearing kilts!

When Oswald, saint and king, fought to regain his father’skingdom at the Battle of Heavenfield (near Chollerford), he setup a cross to show he fought as a Christian. Here the tiny StOswald’s Church, high on the ridge followed by Hadrian’s Wall,is the starting point for the 97 mile St Oswald’s Way. This leadsback to Holy Island via Warkworth on the coast. St Lawrence’s Church, Warkworth is a splendid mediaeval

church solidly built as a place of refuge during those turbulenttimes. There’s a pleasant riverside walk from here towards theunusual Warkworth Hermitage nearby. Inland, St Michael’sChurch, Alnwick is one of the architectural gems ofNorthumberland, and Alnwick’s Inspired Heritage is anabsorbing town trail covering Catholic, Methodist and otherchurches in the town. Visit Northumberland today and you’ll find beauty, peace and tranquillity - but don’t be fooled. Sincebefore the coming of the Romans almost 2,000years ago this land has been violently fought over. The greatest evidence of this is, of course, the magnificent remains of Hadrian’s Wall and the many majestic stone castles and forts dottingthe landscape.

Look closer and you’ll see the Pele Towers andBastle Houses of the Border Reivers, a ruthlessbreed of fighters and marauders whose clans ruledNorthumberland and whose names are still proudlyborn by many of our local families.

Battlefields also abound, including Otterburn where Shakespeare’s Hotspur was captured, andthe most famous of all - Flodden, marking its 500thanniversary in 2013. In 1513 the blood of 14,000men stained the moors and King James IV ofScotland was killed - an event still well rememberedin poetry and ballads.

The Vikings also raided our coasts, attacking theHoly Island of Lindisfarne, slaughtering the monkswho fled with the bones of St Cuthbert and thecelebrated Lindisfarne Gospels.

Even in relatively modern times monuments such as Berwick-upon-Tweed’s ramparts - the only intact Elizabethan town walls remaining in England - and the houses and inventions of local Victorianindustrialists demonstrate the endurance ofNorthumberland’s historic spirit.

Flodden 1513 is Britain’s first cross-borderEcomuseum, linking sites with a connection to the story of Flodden.

Flodden 1513 Ecomuseum

The year 2013 marks the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden, fought between the crowns of England andScotland on a hillside in north Northumberland.

It was a battle of national significance. By the evening of 9thSeptember 1513 the Scottish King, James IV, lay dead, alongwith 100 of his nobles and 15,000 Scottish and English men, women and children. It was the last time a British monarch died on the battlefield at the head of his army. The outcomeinfluenced the course of history, both in Europe and within theseislands; the Union of the Crowns of Scotland and England takingplace exactly 90 years later.

In the Scottish Borders and north Northumberland, the battle iskeenly remembered and today forms the basis of traditions thatstill drive aspects of life, such as the Common Riding festivals inthe border towns. It spawned legend and literature, rememberednot least through Sir Walter Scott’s epic poem ‘Marmion’.

A few years ago, thoughts turned to the approaching 500thanniversary of Flodden, sparking discussions about itsimportance in our history and the wish to commemorate theoccasion in a fitting way. Communities from both sides of theborder have come together to inspire the creation of the Flodden1513 Ecomuseum and a programme of projects and events tomark the passing of 500 years.

Flodden 1513 Ecomuseum links together 12 sites in northNorthumberland, the Scottish Borders and Edinburgh whichhave an intimate connection to the story of Flodden. Alwaysconnected in spirit, these sites are now coherently signed andinterpreted through the virtual visitor centre atwww.flodden1513.com.

Page 15: Northumberland Holiday & Short Breaks Guide 2013

These are all existing sites, where access and interpretation arealready available. They include churches, castles, museums, bridges and of course the battlefield itself, located near thevillage of Branxton.

As well as linking the physical sites, the Ecomuseum embracesthe intangible heritage of Flodden. The ‘exhibits’ are thereforeboth the sites and the community activities associated withthem. During 2013, commemorative events – concerts, exhibitions, plays, living history, archaeology, genealogy, etc.- will be taking place across north Northumberland and theBorders. These projects connect the heritage of Floddenthrough culture, music, stories and education, and strengthenFlodden’s resonance and emotional depth in today’scommunity, turning commemoration into legacy. For moreinformation on the commemorative events please see theFlodden Ecomuseum or Northumberland Tourism websites.

We hope you enjoy your visit to the Borderlands of Englandand Scotland, to discover the story of the battle that shapedour nations.

Lord Joicey

I encourage every visitor to north Northumberlandto pay a visit to the Flodden battlefield and theFlodden Ecomuseum during 2013", says LordJoicey of Ford & Etal Estates. "Stand at the spotwhere, five hundred years ago exactly, one of themost significant battles fought in these islands tookplace between the old adversaries England andScotland. We've all heard of Flodden, but howmany of us really know how it affected this land?”

Northumberland Coast AONBCovering 39 miles of coastline from Berwick to the CoquetEstuary, the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding NaturalBeauty contains some of the most dramatic coastal scenery inthe country. As well as sweeping sandy beaches, dunes full ofwildlife and rugged, rocky cliffs, visitors can also uncoverevidence of over 7,000 years of human habitation and activity.

This is one of the best parts of Northumberland to explore car-free,with a regular Coast and Castles bus service, a great network offootpaths and bridleways and the long-distance NorthumberlandCoast Path stretching its length and beyond.

Well known for its diverse wildlife, The Northumberland CoastAONB attracts spectacular flocks of wading birds and wildfowland large numbers of grey seals. The Farne Islands, managedby the National Trust are famous for their breeding seabirds andare one of the few places that visitors can get up close tothousands of puffins, terns and guillemots. Do remember to weara hat though or the birds may get more personal than you’d like!

Of all Northumberland’s attractions, the most exciting and diverse is our wonderful countryside. Much ofNorthumberland is protected landscape, we have the least-visited National Park in the country and not one but two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Northumberland is a large county and visitors are amazed by howthe countryside changes, from the rugged, often deserted beaches of the Northumberland Coast, across wildlifefilled moorland, along the rolling hills of the Tyne Valley and Hadrian’s Wall Country, to the uplands of theCheviots and the deer-filled forests of Kielder Water & Forest Park.

North Pennines AONBMove inland to the North Pennines Area of OutstandingNatural Beauty, one of England’s special places whereattractive dales and hay meadows give way to open heathermoors and peatlands. Britain’s first UNESCO-endorsedEuropean Geopark; this is a place with outstanding geologywhere interpretation, education, conservation and nature-based tourism combine.

With over 80% of England’s black grouse, and populations of short-eared owl, red squirrel, otters and rare arctic alpineplants, exploring the North Pennines lets you see sights you’reunlikely to encounter elsewhere. For more active types thearea is also stuffed full of exciting activities to try includingwalking, cycling, horse-riding, fishing, orienteering and evenskiing and snowboarding. .

Northumberland National ParkEngland’s most tranquil and least visited National Parkencompasses some of the most dramatic landscape in the Northof England. Stretching between the Scottish border to just southof Hadrian’s Wall, the park covers around a quarter of the county. With a population of less than 2000, Northumberland NationalPark is a tranquil haven of vast hilltops, wide-open vistas anddiverse wildlife.

The Cheviot Hills were formed by volcanoes and glaciers inmillennia past. They are famous amongst walkers, rock climbersand photographers who visit all year round to capture dramaticseasonal changes. Although isolated now, the park containssurprising evidence of our ancestors, from the time when iron-age forts dotted a landscape ruled by Edwin, Northumbria’sWarrior King.

Over 75% of the park is designated open access land, and easyto access along over 1,100 km of public right of way and longdistance walking routes. Along the way you might catch aglimpse of the varied wildlife, discover hidden valleys orpicturesque villages.

Stunning views (Northumberland National Park)

WalkingNorthumberland has one of the finest selections of walking inthe country with an extensive network of footpaths through arange of countryside from rolling farmland to forests, heathercovered moorland and rugged hilltops. Experienced walkersenjoy the challenge of long distance trails such as the 64 mileCoast Path, part of the North Sea Trail; the Pennine Way and, of course, Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail which, at 84 milestakes around 7 days to complete. Particularly apt for 2013,when the Lindisfarne Gospels return our region, is St Cuthbert’sWay which takes in towns and villages of significance in the lifeof England’s most revered Anglo-Saxon Saint. In a similar veinis the 97 mile St Oswald’s Way which passes through some ofNorthumberland’s most spectacular landscapes on its way fromHeavenfield to Holy Island. Less well known is the Isaac’s TeaTrail which follows the footsteps of one of Northumberland’smost loved philanthropists and provides a challengingintroduction to the beautiful North Pennines.

If you prefer something a little less strenuous you’ll be spoilt for choice with shorter walks or circular routes taking in quaintvillages and often offering options for local refreshment en-route. Why not try one of our Northumberland National ParkRangers’ favourite walks, or engage a guide to show you thebest routes and reveal little known local secrets?

CyclingBeing criss-crossed with cycleways suitable for all abilitiesmeans cycling is one of the best ways to see Northumberland.Long distance routes running through the county include theHadrian’s Cycleway, the Reiver’s Cycle Route, the PennineCycle Way and the Coast to Coast. Haltwhistle and Wooler areour official cycle hubs, but great routes are located right acrossthe county catering for every interest. Mountain Bikers are alsospoilt for choice with an extensive network of off-road tracksincluding the famous Deadwater Fell black-graded trail inKielder Water & Forest Park, although there are also many moretrails suitable for learners or a family holiday.

Wildlife WatchingNorthumberland is home to some of Britain’s best loved species, some of which are now sadly very rare. Explorers of Northumberland National Park may encounter lapwings, mountain pansies and buzzards, while in Kielder Water & ForestPark the huge variety of habitats provide homes for animals suchas badgers, roe deer, otters and red squirrels, seven species ofbat and birds including the spectacular ospreys who breed in thepark every spring.

The North Pennines are home to almost all the England’spopulation of black grouse, short-eared owls and rare arcticalpine plants, whilst our coasts team with large numbers of greyseals, puffins, guillemots and arctic terns and are also home tothe largest UK colony of rare roseate terns.

Page 33: Northumberland Holiday & Short Breaks Guide 2013

Twenty minutes after “checking’’ into his Indian home for theweekend, five-year-old Ruaridh had helped his dad build a fire, worked out how the toasting fork needed to be handled andcooked a pink and white fluffy kebab!

And all that while his two-year-old sister Flora whizzed aroundthe spacious tipi kissing the beautifully painted animals on theinside perimeters.

Outside the rain thundered down, but the Hay family managedto keep dry and cook a three-course meal on the fire bowl, before turning in for the night, parents on a comfy double bed, while the children slept soundly on futons, all of us kept warmby duck down duvets and Fair Trade and reindeer rugs.We were nestled in the heart of the Northumbrian National Parkin Tarset, around 20 miles from Hexham, staying in the tipiowned by Wild Northumbrian Tipis and Yurt hosts Robert andVictoria Hersey.

Set in beautiful rolling countryside, the tipi is stragetically placedon its own, with another three on site, but out of sight, and twoyurts.

Cooking and washing facilities (complete with underfloorheating!) are close by and the Hersey’s have made a good jobof creating an environmentally friendly atmosphere in beautifulsurroundings rich in wildlife (red squirrels!) and flowers. Thecouple run special workshops to teach outdoor skills such asbushcraft and wildness therapy.

One of the attractions of the area is its darkness at night. A fewmiles away from Tarset is Kielder Water & Forest Park. There liesan observatory where you watch the stars by night and duringthe day, enjoy Northern Europe’s largest man-made lake andEngland’s largest forest.

There are lots of bike and walking trails and a birds of preycentre. An hour’s drive takes you into the market town ofHexham. Centrepiece in the town is the abbey which dates backto around 675 AD. Hexham Old Gaol is the oldest purpose-builtprison in England, complete with a trip to the dungeon!

The town itself is compact and neat and has a certain charmabout it as you wander around. It is also home to a small, butbeautiful racecourse. We had a flutter on Ladies’ Day andenjoyed the old-fashioned facilities and well-kept course, whichas with most small courses, offers race-goers a good viewwithout the need for big television screens.

From Hexham, we headed towards Newcastle and the newly-opened Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens. Set in the grounds of

Northumberland College, the zoo is home to a host of animalsfrom emus to meerkats!

It has been well thought out and the animals are kept inspacious and green settings, with the staff really enthusiasticabout their “inmates’’. Students are taught in the zoo and atweekends and in school holidays, it is open to the public.

There is so much more to see in Northumberland, it’s a countyfull of beautiful countryside, deserted beaches and picturepostcard homes. Our trip was just a taster, like the toastedmarshmallows, we’ll be back for more!

Isaac’s Tea Trail is a 36-mile circular trail that starts in Allendale at Isaac's Well and goesover to Nenthead and Alston and returns byNinebanks (YHA Ninebanks). The route is waymarked and has distinctive Isaac signs. The walk follows the footsteps of the legendary tea sellerand fund raiser Isaac Holden. On the trail you will discoverglorious dales and cross wild moors with stunning viewsacross the North Pennines.

The walk is special because it gently carries you back intime to the 19th century – to the demise of the lead miningindustry and the life of a local tea seller. When the leadmining industry collapsed Isaac was forced to find a newway of making a living and so he became a travelling tea seller.

He was also a Methodist like many others and distinctivelydressed in black. Over the years Isaac became a familiarfigure on his round of deliveries to the isolated farmhousesand remaining households still connected with the mines. He also helped raise money for local charities.

As well as Isaac’s Tea Trail, Northumberland is home toother long-distance walks, including St. Oswald’s Way and St. Cuthbert’s Way.
