this important right is protected,” he stated.

Tánaiste and Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton welcomed the bill.

“For many years, adoption in Ireland happened very much in the shadows, with little or no regulation and great secrecy,” said Minister Burton.

“Children were put up for adoption, often against the will of the mother, usually under the auspices of religious bodies, and without legal protection for them or their adoptive parents.

“The birth mother was told that her identity would be kept secret and would never be disclosed to her child, or anyone else.

“As an adopted person myself who discovered the true identity of my parents only after an exhaustive and deeply emotional search in the late 1990s, by which time they were dead, I always thought that this was grievously wrong.”

Minister Burton said the bill was a very important step in “remedying this situation”.

Continued from page 1Senator Power said she

welcomed the Government’s decision to follow through on her bill by legislating for adoptees to have a right to their birth certs. She said she agreed that a natural parent’s current contact details should only be released with their consent.

“However, I do not accept there are any situations in which an adopted person should be refused access to the basic information in their birth certificate,” she stated.

Senator Power said she was also concerned that adoptees would only be able to get their birth certs after they sign a statutory declaration agreeing to respect their parent(s)’ wishes regarding contact. “This condition has been criticised by groups representing both natural mothers and adopted adults,” she said. “It is unnecessary and offensive. It seems to be based on a negative assumption that adoptees are irrational and insensitive and would wish to push themselves into their parents’ lives. That is simply not the case.”

Senator Power said that while many adopted people may be disappointed their parents don’t wish to have contact, they would respect their wishes.

“If problems arise in a small number of cases these can be dealt with under our existing

harassment laws,” she added. Minister for Children and Youth

Affairs Dr James Reilly, who published the bill, said it marks a major breakthrough in dealing with the complex challenge of providing a statutory entitlement to identity information for adopted persons.

“In drafting the legislation we faced a particular challenge in the attempt to reconcile an adopted person’s request for information about his or her identity with the right to privacy of his or her birth parent,” said Minister Reilly.

“We recognised that adopted persons are a unique part of this process and the information that they are seeking is about their own identity.

“A birth certificate is an important piece of identifying information that is shared by an adopted person and his/her birth parents.

“We are distinguishing it from other identifying information which can be more readily characterised as belonging to one or the other.”

Minister Reilly said that while the bill is about providing a right to information, it is critical that birth parents’ constitutional right to privacy is protected.

“I believe that by allowing birth parents an opportunity to specify the extent of contact, if any, in addition to the other safeguards to be put in place will ensure that

Skerries harbour funding welcomedSKERRIES harbour is to re-ceive €112,500 in funding under the 2015 Fishery Har-bours Capital Investment Programme.

A total of €1.1 million has been allocated for Local Au-thority Harbour projects and Skerries will be one of the 17 projects to benefit from the in-vestment.

Dublin Fingal TD Alan Farrell (FG) said he was pleased with the announcement by Marine Minister Simon Coveney .

“This investment in the re-pair and upkeep of Skerries Harbour is essential in order to ensure its sustainability into the future,” he said.

Calls made to animal welfare helpline tripleCALLS made to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s Animal Welfare Helpline tripled between 2013 and 2014.

There were just 212 calls to the helpline in 2013, which increased to 652 calls in 2014.

The total number of calls by mid 2015 was 350 indicating that the increase will continue through this year.

The figures were released to Dublin Bay North TD Tommy Broughan (Ind) from the Department through a Parliamentary Question.

Deputy Broughan said: “We don’t know from these figures whether instances of animal cruelty have also increased or whether people are just less tolerant of such cruelty and more likely to report it.

“There have been some very distressing reports recently of puppy farms and maltreated animals, especially horses.

“I encourage people to continue to report instances of cruelty and for the Minister to take action when necessary.”

Minister for the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney said: “Where it is considered appropriate, follow up action is arranged by inspectors from my department or with the assistance of the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals/Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Gum litter campaign sticks New mechanisms have been

agreed to further enhance and reinvigorate the campaign which represents a multi-million euro commitment by industry to tack-le the problem.

The initiative aims to build on the success of past public edu-cation programmes and intro-

duce new elements to help raise awareness of the impact of lit-tered gum and encourage proper gum disposal.

Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Govern-ment Alan Kelly said: “The agree-ment to renew this initiative rep-resents a genuine commitment

by industry to finding a solution to improper gum disposal.

“The programme will continue to focus on achieving a lasting change in gum disposal behav-iour, by encouraging people to dispose of gum litter responsi-bly.”

Chairman of the GLT Paul

Kelly said: “We look forward to launching the new three-year programme and a number of new initiatives including ‘Bin It! Bud-dies and our new strapline ‘Bin your gum when you’re done’.”

This will be GLT’s third full campaign and aims to build on the success achieved to date.

A NEW three-year pro-gramme has been launched to combat the scourge of gum lit-ter.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Críona Ní́Dhálaigh attended the official launch of the 2015 Gum Litter Taskforce (GLT) education cam-

paign at St Stephen’s Green. The launch follows an agree-

ment between the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government and Food and Drink Industry Ireland (FDII), representing the gum industry, to fund a national awareness pro-gramme from 2015–2017.

Decisive action needed on healthcare system

Terence Flanagan

THE ongoing crisis in A&E departments around the country can be acutely felt on the northside of Dublin, in Beau-mont Hospital.

For too many years now, overcrowd-ing has been a problem brewing under the surface, only to bubble up during periods of intense pressure on our hospitals, especially during the winter months.

But this year, we have seen that this problem is no longer confined to the winter months.

In June, two elderly women, both over the age of 100, were left on hospi-tal trolleys overnight.

This represented the degrading and inhumane treatment that some of our senior citizens have had to endure. It is

unacceptable and must stop.Notwithstanding the gravity of the

situation, the Government has engaged in precious little action on the topic.

Their unacceptable lacklustre re-sponse has ensured that after four and a half years in office, the overcrowd-ing problems have not receded in any way. The Minister for Health set up the Emergency Department Task Force last December to explore long-term solu-tions to the crisis, but this venture was simply too little too late and has been nothing more than a talking shop.

I have consistently raised this issue in the Dáil and suggested a number of policies which would help provide immediate relief to the crisis, yet at the same time develop sustainable solutions to ensure the crisis comes to an end.

I call on the Minister for Health to seriously consider these suggestions and make a commitment to tackling the problem head on.

1. Funding needs to be ring-fenced to ensure adequate resources are avail-able to hospitals which are drastically understaffed, particularly in relation to doctors and nurses.

With this completed, more staff could be recruited and some of the pressures currently faced by hospital staff would be alleviated.

Adequate funding would mean staff and patient safety would not be compromised in any way - a fundamen-tal tenet of any world class healthcare system.

2. The waiting time for the Fair Deal Scheme needs to be further reduced. Many elderly people are being kept in hospitals, the only reason being the bureaucratic and slow operation of the Fair Deal Scheme.

To help resolve this problem, we in RENUA Ireland would provide for the money collected as part of a dramati-cally reformed local property tax to be returned directly to local areas to develop and fund community nursing homes, thereby freeing up more much needed space in hospitals across the country.

3. The Primary Care Centres prom-ised need to be opened as soon as possible. In a positive development, the HSE has earmarked two Primary Care Centres for the Dublin Bay North constituency. One will be in Coolock/Darndale and the other in Edenmore. These centres need to be opened this year to relieve some of the pressure on Beaumont Hospital.

And once again, if RENUA Ireland’s vision of a fundamentally reformed local property tax is implemented, local funding will be available to invest

opinion >>

directly in vital community services. In conclusion, I call on the Minis-

ter for Health to take necessary and decisive action to commit to making our healthcare system world class, as at present our hospitals and dedicated hospital staff are being ignored and

Pressure needs to be relieved on Beaumont Hospital. FILE PHOTO ▪

starved of vital extra resources. This is not a healthy position for our

country to be in and it will only change when the Government commits fully to tackling the problem head on.

Bright burlesque future for FifiA NORTHSIDE circus performer is looking forward to a bright future in burlesque following her appearance in the f i n a l of a national com-petition.

Fifi La Roux, from Bal-

rothery, competed for the Miss Burlesque Ireland title at the Button Factory, Dublin, last month.

After picking up a hula-hoop at a music festival dur-

ing 2012, Fifi was intro-duced to the world of circus, burlesque and

the cabaret scene, which is at its strongest in Dublin city.

After realising that there was nowhere to train around Bal-rothery, Fifi branched out to the city and began training in the art of Aerial Acrobatics through Pa-perDolls, a collaborative aerial performance company, and pole

dance at the Irish Pole Dance Academy.

There, she underwent seri-ous conditioning and training, perfecting her skills and under-standing of performance.

In 2013, only a year after be-ginning her journey, Fifi was presented with the opportunity

to travel across America with a traditional circus, the Kelly Mill-er Circus.

After returning in September that year, Fifi was full of energy and drive to create. She realised what was needed to become a successful performer in Ireland, and threw herself at any oppor-

tunity that arose. In 2014 she travelled to Milan

to train for five months along with studying in the Brera Acad-emy of Fine Art.

A bright future as a stage per-former beckons for Fifi!

Getting their oars in!

PLURABELLE Paddlers is a dragon boat racing team that comprises women who want to get fit after undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

The team, which is based at Grand Canal Dock, is currently seeking new members.

The club has arranged a special ‘try-it-out’ training session for novice paddlers on Wednesday, August 12 at 6.30pm.

The session is for people who are look-ing for a new challenge and adventure.

Though relatively unknown in Ireland, the ancient Chinese sport of dragon boat racing is believed to be the fastest grow-ing watersport in the world.

The medical profession have acknowl-edged dragon boat racing, an energetic and fun team sport, as being a fantastic way to build upper body strength and general health and fitness following a breast cancer diagnosis.

Plurabelle Paddlers was formed in 2010 and now has over 60 active mem-bers. The team trains twice a week from March to October and offers its mem-bers a fitness programme during the winter months.

There are currently more than 150 breast cancer dragon boat teams world-wide and members of the Plurabelle Paddlers have taken part in regattas and festivals throughout Ireland and trav-elled to the UK, Italy, Spain, Malaysia and USA.

Marian O’Dea, co-founder of Plurabelle Paddlers, said: “Dragon boat racing is a fun way of getting active, fit and healthy following breast cancer treatment.

“You don’t need any previous expe-rience to paddle with us and it doesn’t matter your level of fitness or what age you are. We have members in their 30s and 70s.

“If you’ve had breast cancer and fancy a new adventure, we’d love to welcome you to the Grand Canal Dock for our ‘try-it-out’ training session on August 12.”

Ms O’Dea added that, if people miss out on the August 12 session, they can still join, as members are welcome all-year round.

For more information, phone 087-4686662, email [email protected] or visit www.plu-rabellepaddlers.com

Eve says her family is very support-ive of her efforts to become Miss Ire-land, “especially my mom Jane”.

“My granddad, John Ryan, from the White Sands Hotel in Portmar-nock, is my biggest fan. He and my grandmother Marie are as proud as punch!

“My father, Peter O’Connor, son of Christy O’Connor sen-ior, works in Portugal as a golf pro, and I have a gor-geous little half brother, Christopher, who’s three-years-of-age.”

Eve’s family, along with all her friends and admirers on the North-side, will be cheering her on, on August 28 and will be hoping that the judges will make the Wright choice!

A NORTHSIDE girl will be bidding to become the 68th Miss Ireland later this month when she competes with 21 other stunners for the much-coveted beauty title.

Last month Eve Ryan (19), from Portmarnock, was crowned Miss Wrights Café Bar, beating off the strong claims of 10 other girls for the local title.

If Eve is crowned Miss Ireland at the Crowne Plaza, Santry, on August 28, she will represent her country at Miss World in Sanya, China, in December.

Eve, a granddaughter of golf-ing legend Christy O’Connor sen-ior, says she was “absolutely over the moon” when she heard she had won the Miss Wrights Café Bar title in Swords.

“I couldn’t stop smiling,” she says. “I was awake half the night with excitement.

“I’ve always known about Miss Ireland and have wanted to en-ter, so when I saw an advertise-ment on Facebook the day before the competition I jumped at the chance.”

Despite her tender years, Eve, a qualified make-up artist who studied at the Waverly Academy, is no stranger to success in beau-ty competitions.

“When I was 15 I entered a beauty pageant in London,” she recalls.

“I thought it would just be a great experience and a bit of fun. I won the competition and was delighted.

“Ultimately I would love to win the Miss Ireland competition. It would be amazing to represent my country at Miss World.

“I’m looking forward to meet-ing all of the other contestants and hopefully make some friends for life.”

While all her focus is under-standably on Miss Ireland, Eve’s future plans involve carving out a career in modelling, and she has already made a promising start

in that direction.“I’m currently signed with Cat-

walk Modelling Agency and I have modelled on Xposé and Ireland Am which I loved,” she says.

“Eventually I would love to have a successful career in mod-elling, start my own fashion blog and travel the world.

“I love all aspects of fashion and I’m going to college in Sep-tember to study fashion and de-sign.”

Eve believes that winning com-petitions like Miss Wrights Café Bar can help open doors to a suc-cessful career.

“Only recently I watched three previous Miss Ireland winners on ‘Saturday Night With Miriam’,” she says.

“They were saying how many doors it opened for them and how it was a stepping stone for their careers.”

The keep-fit fanatic has a per-sonal trainer who works with her twice a week and she manages to get to the gym most days. She also walks on Portmarnock beach every day.

Little Tadhg’s biglegacy

Jack Gleeson

THE parents and friends of a happy five-year-old who died tragically on a family holiday four years ago are being comforted by amazing local support that’s raised over €100,000 in their son’s name.

Tadhg Ó Fainín, from Ballymun, tragically drowned in a swimming pool accident at a resort in Killarney, on July 18, 2011, leaving his parents distraught and devastated.

There is no recovery from the loss of a child, especially one bursting with life and energy like Tadhg was.

However, Eoin and Kariann Ó Fainín found a way to cope and carry on by throwing themselves

into fundraising for the Tadhg Ó Fainín Foundation, which they set up in honour of their beloved little boy.

And the foundation recently hit a remarkable milestone when it reached a total of €100,000, all of which has been donated to worthy children’s charities.

“Tadhg was fun loving, very funny and full of love,” Eoin told Northside People. “He was full of life, dancing all the time and always laughing and joking.”

Three months after Tadhg passed away, family and friends decided to hold a tribute fundraiser in Kavanaghs of Dorset Street for the little boy known to his classmates as Cosa Sasta (Happy Feet as Gaelige).

“We decided to give whatever was raised to charity because

NEVER FORGOTTEN: Kariann and Eoin Ó Fainín with a portrait of little Tadhg. PHOTO BY DARREN KINSELLA

Over €100,000 has been raised for children’s charitiesin Tadhg Ó Fainín’s name

we’ve no interest in money for ourselves and that’s where it all started off,” said Eoin.

“The turnout was phenomenal. There were people there who I hadn’t seen since primary school. It was just amazing for me to see them and to get that support from people who I hadn’t seen for ages, some for over 20 years.”

That first fundraiser brought in over €12,000, which was donated to a children’s cancer ward in Our Lady’s Hospital in Crumlin. Encouraged by the fundraiser’s success and the knowledge that the money was being used to help children, Eoin and Kariann, supported by family and friends, decided to set up a foundation in Tadhg’s name.

The event had also been a healing experience for the bereaved couple.

“I didn’t want to go out and I had been avoiding people, walking around with my head down,” Kariann said. “The fundraiser got me out, and it was great because people were all together in Kavanagh’s so it was easier for me just to say hello to people.”

Later that year, the Tadhg Ó Fainín Foundation sang carols at Christmas to raise more money, and Eoin and his pals posed for a cheeky topless calendar that was sold locally.

“We were the most misshapen bunch of lads you’ve ever seen,” laughed Eoin. “Most of us had to be Photoshopped!”

Danceathons, charity runs and skydiving events followed, all held in the same spirit of fun that Tadhg was so full of.

“Laughter and humour are very important to us,” said Eoin. “It helps an awful lot to be able

to enjoy things, as much as it pains us to do it sometimes.”

Eoin and Kariann have been ‘blown away’ by the foundation’s success and were amazed when they realised they’d reached the €100,000 milestone.

“It’s very surprising, but people have surprised me every day with their willingness to help,” said Eoin. “It’s just lovely to see. It restores my faith in people and it helps us an awful lot.

“These people are real superheroes. They’re heroes who don’t wear capes, they wear hoodies and tracksuits and they’re the salt of the earth, wonderful, helpful people. You can never thank them enough.”

Tadhg is very much alive in the Ó Fainín home and is always referred to in the present tense. Kariann even had teddy bears made out of Tadhg’s clothes, which are carefully placed to represent him in family photos alongside his brothers, Féidhlim and Senán,

The foundation donates all money raised to non-Government funded children’s charities that rely on the kindness of others to survive, just like Eoin and Kariann have had to do.

Upcoming events include a ‘strictly’ dancing event on October 10 in the Regency Hotel to mark Tadhg’s birthday.

“It’s going to be called Strictly Cosa Sasta in memory of Tadhg because he loved that Happy Feet film,” said Kariann. “There’s also going to be a GAA blitz for Mothers and Others in Erin’s Isle on September 12.”

Information on the Tadhg Ó Fainín Foundation and details of upcoming events can be found online at www.tadhgofainin.com.

Fingallians welcome GAA President to their clubGAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail visited Fingallians GAA Club last Saturday week (July 25) to reopen their resurfaced all-weather pitch at Lawless Memorial Park, Swords.

An tUachtarán Ó Fearghail and his wife, Frances, were welcomed with a Guard of Honour provided by the juvenile section.

They were introduced to the Ard Comhairle of the club and then to various club celebrities

including ex-Dublin player Ki-eran Duff, Paralympian Catherine Walsh, former Fingallians and Roscommon player Harry Keegan, Hurling All-Star Dermot Vaughan, current Dublin senior ladies’ foot-ballers Sinéad Ní Fhionnagáin,

Fiona Hudson and Emer Ní hÉafa along with the previous club chairpersons and local club char-acters. The President and his wife were then shown a historic photo display which charts the long his-tory of the club since its founda-tion in 1884 to the present day. The club’s Scór section then put on a performance of traditional music, Irish dancing and singing.

Local playwright serves up Fried EggsAN award-winning Northside writer is aiming to serve up more success with her new play which opens in Dublin next week.

Moonstone Productions presents ‘Fried Eggs’, written and directed by Lindsay Jane Sedgwick, at Theatre Upstairs, Eden Quay, from August 11-15 and August 18-22.

Lindsay, originally from Sutton and now living in Marino, said ‘Fried Eggs’ was conceived as a sketch but then it wouldn’t stop growing.

“One early reader (of the script) described it as Bridget Jones meets Shirley Valentine meets Nuts!” she said.

‘Fried Eggs’, starring Karen Connell, is a bizarre love story about two unusual sisters and one very understanding man.

Eloise spends her life consol-ing men her sister Lulu has slept with and dumped.

If Lulu could only be a little more inhibited, that might make Eloise’s life a bit easier.

When Eloise loses her job be-

cause of Lulu, the last thing she wants is to meet her sister’s latest conquest, Brendan. But then again, Brendan might be the one person who can make everything right.

At a time when posi-tive mental health is rec-ognised as being crucial to our wellbeing and even survival, this funny, lyrical and quirky play shows that no matter what the odds, love and hope are still possible.

Lindsay is no stranger to liter-ary success. In 2011, her creation ‘Punky’ became the world’s first ever animated TV series featur-ing a lead character with Down Syndrome.

Clontarf man Gerard O’Rourke of Monster Animation produced the series, titled ‘Punky’, which was aired on RTEjr and also nom-

i n a t e d for the IFTAs.

This will be Lindsay’s 13th stage production. Some of her other plays have been staged at the Focus Theatre, Smock Alley Theatre, the Waterside (Derry), Cork Arts Theatre, the Interna-tional Bar and broadcast on BBC Radio 4.

Northside scouts travel to JapanOVER 70 Northside scouts flew out from Dublin Airport to Ja-pan last weekend as part of Scouting Ireland’s contingent to participate in the 23rd World Scout Jamboree in Kirara-hama, Yamguchi City.

Fingal was represented by scouts from Skerries, Rush, Swords, Malahide, Portmarnock, Howth and Blanchardstown amongst the group of more than 300.

Alll of the scouts spent numer-ous months preparing and train-ing to represent Ireland in what will be the scouting adventure of their lives. They will return to Ire-land on August 16.

A World Scout Jamboree takes place every four years. It is par-ticularly significant that it’s tak-ing place in Japan this year given that it will held during the 70th anniversary of the atomic bomb-ing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Remembering the Kilcoole Gun Running

THE Kilcoole Gun Running of August 1, 1914 was an event of major impor-tance in the lead up to the 1916 Ris-ing.

The Wicklow gun running, however, is often overshadowed by the more high profile Howth Gun Running of July 26, 1914.

In fact, both arms’ shipments were part of the same consignment that had been bought by Irish republicans in Germany and smuggled back to Ireland aboard two ships.

The ships were called the Asgard, which was skippered by Erskine Childers, that landed at Howth and the Kelpie, captained by Conor O’Brien, that was destined for Kilcoole, County Wick-low.

The full consignment of republican arms consisted of 1,500 German rifles, including the Mausers and single shot

rifles.A total of 900 rifles were loaded

aboard the Asgard while some 600 rifles were placed aboard the Kelpie.

While the Howth Gun Running had

been arranged as a public act of defi-ance, the organisation of the Kilcoole Gun Running was a far more secretive affair, with the landing taking place un-der the cover of darkness.

Originally, it had been planned for the Kilcoole guns to land on the night of July 25, 1914, but a number of events pre-vented this from taking place.

Chief among the reasons for post-ponement was a concern amongst the gun runners that Conor O’Brien, then a prominent member of the volunteers, might attract unwanted attention from the British authorities.

As the Asgard and the Kelpie shel-tered off the coast of Wales in late July, plans were made to transfer the cargo of the Kelpie to a less suspicious yacht, the Chotah.

The Chotah was owned by Sir Thomas Myles, President of the Royal College of Surgeons and the King of England’s hon-orary surgeon in Ireland.

With such a prestigious owner, the vessel seemed unlikely to raise suspi-cion and was perfect for the job.

The Chotah met the Kelpie off the Llyn peninsula in Wales and took hold of the precious cargo.

The Kelpie was now free to sail back to Dublin, providing an effective decoy for Childers and the Asgard.

The crew of the Chotah, however, found that their main sail was in need of repair and had to delay their voyage to Kilcoole.

Close to midnight on August 1, 1914, the Chotah was met just off the Kish lighthouse by the Nugget, a trawler based out of Howth.

The trawler then towed the Chotah to

Kilcoole, were it was met by a flotilla of volunteers in small rowing boats, wait-ing to ferry the rifles and ammunition ashore.

The Irish Republican Brotherhood (IRB) presided over the arms’ landing.

Séan Fitzgibbon, a prominent local volunteer, was responsible for the un-loading operation, while Liam Mellows, then a rising Irish Republican Brother-hood star, was responsible for ensuring the rifles were distributed safely to re-publican safe houses.

Once safely ashore, many of the ri-fles were loaded aboard a charabanc, an early open top bus, and set off for Dublin.

At 5am, disaster struck in Little Bray, when the back axle broke off the chara-banc and it seemed as if the republicans and the rifles were stranded.

Luckily, the bus driver was a former resident of Bray, and by calling at a neighbour’s house was able to arrange a safe house for the rifles.

The volunteers then raced into the city, where a fleet of taxis was organised to collect the weapons.

The rifles were taken for safe keep-ing at Padraig Pearse’s famous St Enda’s School in Rathfarnaham and at Joseph Plunkett’s farm in Kimmage.

The Kilcoole Gun Running was a major success for Irish republicans.

Many of the rifles and personalities involved would later play a key part in the 1916 Rising.

for at least 12 months and be likely to be incapable of work for at least another 12 months. You will probably have been get-ting Illness Benefit or Disability Allowance during that time, or

•Be permanently incapable of work. In certain cases of very serious illness or disability, you can transfer directly from an-other social welfare payment or from your job to Invalidity Pen-sion.

A deciding officer of the De-partment of Social Protection will examine your claim and de-termine your entitlement based on the qualifying conditions out-lined above.

illness Benefit

•The current tax yearor(b) 26 weeks of PRSI contri-

butions paid in the relevant tax year, and 26 weeks of PRSI con-tributions paid in the tax year

immediately before the relevant tax year.

The relevant tax year is the second last complete tax year before the year in which your claim for Illness Benefit begins.

Answer:You may get Illness Benefit

from the Department of Social Protection if you cannot work because you are sick or ill.

You must apply for Illness Benefit within seven days of be-coming ill. No payment is made for the first six days of illness which are known as waiting days. Note that this was extend-ed from three to six days from January 6 2014.

The only time that the six waiting days are not applied is if you were getting certain other social welfare payments within three days of the start of your illness.

Whether you qualify for pay-ment or not, you should always submit a claim for Illness Ben-efit when you are certified unfit for work.

You may be entitled to PRSI credited contributions for each

week you are ill and these could help you qualify for future social welfare payments.

Social insurance (PRSI) con-tributions

To qualify for payment of Ill-ness Benefit you must satisfy the following two conditions:

You must have at least 104 weeks’ PRSI contributions paid since you first started work and either

(a): 39 weeks of PRSI contri-butions paid or credited in the relevant tax year, of which 13 must be paid contributions.

If you do not have 13 paid contributions in the relevant tax year, then 13 paid contributions in one of the following tax years can be used instead:

•Either of the two tax years before the relevant tax year

•The last complete tax year (before the year in which your claim for Illness Benefit begins)

Get rid of your stress and anxietyWendy Quinn

MOST of us feel stressed or anxious at different times in our lives - looking for work, an exam, moving house, giving a presentation/speech, social situations, relationships etc.

Stress can come from a situa-tion that makes us feel nervous or overwhelmed. Anxiety can come from feelings of fear, worry and constant negative thinking. Stress and anxiety can come and go. However, if you are feeling helpless, overwhelmed, unable to concentrate or focus or having difficulty coping with life, then it is time to get help. If you are avoiding situations or events be-cause of irrational fears or con-stant worrying, it is time to do something about it. How do you know if you are stressed or anx-ious? Muscle ache, headaches, stomach upset, palpitations, diz-

ziness, rapid breathing, tiredness, sweating, diarrhea.

Often we cannot sleep, our blood pressure rises and we are constantly thinking the worst, feeling irritable, angry, sad, rest-less and/or insecure.

This can lead to avoidance, overeating, drinking too much, smoking more or abusing drugs. Everyone reacts differently. There is no need to continue suffering. Using an innovative approach by learning to manage stress and anxiety you can feel calm, re-laxed and in control when there is stress around you.

Practice proven psychological

tools and techniques to overcome anxiety and fear. Feel freer and increase your confidence, learn how to react differently and make positive changes in your life now.

Increase concentration and focus, sleep better and take that important step to long term, per-manent change.

Majorincrease in texts to ConsolehelplineA NATIONAL suicide prevention charity has recorded a 49 per cent increase in texts to its hel-pline in the first six months of the year.

A total of 3,914 people texted Console’s 51444 line between January and June 2015, com-pared to 2,617 for the same pe-riod in 2014.

Sixty-two per cent of texts are now coming from males, a figure which is being hailed as a break-through in suicide prevention.

Console founder and chief ex-ecutive Paul Kelly said: “Most of the 49 per cent increase in text use comes from young men who are using their mobiles as a way of opening initial communication with the charity’s services.

“We have experienced a large rise in young men texting HELP to 51444 who may be in suicidal crisis, have attempted suicide or are engaging in deliberate acts of self harm

“When people are experiencing this level of crisis they sometimes find it easier to type than talk.”

Dogs Trust is based in Finglas, just off exit 5 on the M50. Map and directions can be found on their website at www.dogstrust.ie. You can also pop up for a visit. Dogs Trust is open six days a week from 12-4pm. The centre is closed all day Tuesday. You can also find Dogs Trust on Facebook at www.facebook.com/dogstrustireland or Twitter @DogsTrust_IE.

Dublin People Newspaper Group has teamed up with Dogs Trust to help find homes for over 200 lost and abandoned dogs.

Our Dog of the Week this week is Maggie, a six-year-old Labra-dor cross. Maggie needs help to build her confidence up as she’s suffered a few knock backs in her time.

Once you get to know her, she’ll lavish you with affection and love. Maggie finds a lot about the world very frightening and needs a home in a quiet location with a loving family to slowly show her that she doesn’t need to be frightened anymore.

Maggie can live with older teenagers but would need to be the only dog in the home. Being an anxious girl, it’s important that her new family have infrequent visitors and the time to commit to helping her grow in confidence day by day.

If you think you could offer Maggie a loving home call Dogs Trust on 01-8791000 or pop into the centre.

Coping with the loss of your canine companionCorina Fitzsimons

DOGS give us so much and ask for so little in return.

They provide unconditional love, companionship, keep us en-tertained with their shenanigans and accept us for who we are, without judgement.

Unfortunately their life span is relatively short compared to ours.

Psychologists recognise that the feelings experienced by own-ers after the death of their dog are comparable to those felt af-ter losing close human friends or relatives.

Unfortunately not everyone understands the intense grief that can follow the passing of a dog and there is nothing worse than hearing a friend or rela-

tive (no matter how well mean-ing) telling you to pull yourself together because it was “just a dog”. Give yourself permission to grieve and be patient with your-

self. It is okay to be upset about the death of your dog. Take as long as you need and cry as much as you like.

Surround yourself with people

who understand your loss and who you can talk to about your dog. Talking with others will help you to express your feelings and come to terms with your loss.

Look after yourself physically and make an effort to get enough exercise, sleep and eat properly. Treat and pamper yourself.

Consider making a scrapbook with your favourite photographs and memories so you will always have it to look back on.

This can also be a way of re-minding yourself about all of the good times and some of the mis-chief he or she inevitably got up to, which can help ease some of the pain.

At Dogs Trust we know that it’s never a case of “it’s just a dog”, we know he or she was your best friend. Don’t be ashamed or too proud to get help.

Contact a pet bereavement counsellor if you are having diffi-culty coping with your loss.

Try to plan ahead as much as possible, as it can be too trau-matic to make informed decisions when you are in the initial shock stages after the death. If you have warning that your dog’s death may be imminent, then discuss the options available with your vet beforehand.

What to do with your dog’s re-mains is a very personal decision. Some people may want to keep their dog close to them by bury-ing the body in their own garden, or by arranging for an individ-ual cremation and keeping the ashes.

Many people worry about what would hap-pen if they were to die

Parasite Control in Cats and DogsRegular flea and worm treatment is necessary to keep your pet, your family and your home healthy.

Worms - practically all kittens and puppies have worms, so treatment to kill these parasites is very important as they can affect your pet’s health and can potentially be passed on to humans. Worm treatment can be administered in the form of tablets or suspension. Tablets are usually flavoured to encourage dogs and cats to take them and they can be given directly to your pet or they can be disguised in their food. They act as a cure as well as maintenance.

Fleas - check your pet’s coat for external parasites. The best way to do this is with the use of a flea comb. You can also dampen a piece of cotton wool against your pet’s skin, if dark brown blotches appear on the cotton wool, this is flea dirt and you can be 100% sure that your pet has fleas. Fleas can be tackled with Spot-on treatments, which must be applied on a thoroughly dry and clean coat (after being washed with insecticidal shampoo). The environment of the pet must be also treated, as the fleas that we see on our pet are only 5% of the whole flea population that lives near our pet. The rest of the fleas live in the form of flea eggs, larvae and pupae in the pets environment, such as dog beds, blankets, furniture and floors. Therefore, to successfully combat fleas it is important to treat the house and dog’s kennel area with insecticidal spray.

Fleas and their larvae can live all year round so monthly treatment is advised.

This year’s Professor Hol-lywood Memorial Cup will see former Dublin hurling man-ager Anthony Daly manage the St James’s Hospital team and former Dublin football star Char-lie Redmond manage the team representing St Luke’s Hospital.

The teams will comprise play-ers who have all received treat-ment for cancer and want to show others that there is life after be-ing diagnosed with the illness.

The Professor Hollywood Me-morial Cup was established to help raise awareness that people can recover from this disease.

The event also raises funds for the cancer units at St James’s Hospital and St Luke’s Hospital.

This is the second year that the two teams have played for the trophy.

In May 2014 Brian Cody and

Trinity welcomes tomorrow’sTRINITY College Dublin’ welcomed secondary pupils from four girls’ schools, including three from Dublin (Our Lady’s Terenure, Santa Sabina, Sutton, Lucan Community College), for its seventh annual two-week eye-opener into the world of engineering.

The fourth and fifth year girls learned about the prospects and opportunities open to engineers at Trinity’s School of Engineering while enjoying demonstrations and talks and engaging in problem-solving exercises and design challenges.

A favourite this year was the portable speaker project, where each student designed and built a speaker to plug into their mobile phone.

The project covered design, basic theory, electronic circuit construction and soldering, before the students used 3D printers to finalise their custom casing designs.

Course Co-Ordinator and Assistant Professor in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering at Trinity, Kevin Kelly, said: “With a 5:1 ratio of males to females in Irish engineering, we must all work harder to create a

more balanced demographic.“As well as helping address the

supply shortage of graduate engineers, more female students and practitioners

will result in increased diversity which leads to better decisions as well as more innovative designs and outcomes,”

Professor Kelly believes the course is going from strength to strength for three main reasons. Firstly, it is free of charge, ensuring access is not restricted

by finance, secondly, meaningful and lasting partnerships continue to develop with secondary schools, and thirdly, students are invited to partake on the basis of ability, rather than pre-existing motivation.

As a result, ‘don’t know’ and ‘maybe’ students are invited in preference to those who already have strong inclinations towards studying engineering.

The programme is facilitated by staff members and graduate students and by a team of undergraduate summer interns. Some of this year’s interns had participated in the programme when they were in school, and as such were

Shortage of public relations graduatesTHE public relations industry is experiencing an acute shortage of qualified professionals to fill vacancies as job opportunities are increasing across the sector in Ireland.

The fall in the number of PR graduates, combined with the rising demand of qualified specialists in the industry, has created a war for new talent in Ireland.

“At last, after a few years of uncertainty, the economy looks set for recovery,” said Noel Murphy, of the Fitzwilliam Institute Group, the longest-running PR training provider in Ireland.

“That is good news for PR professionals, as recruitment picks up and job opportunities arise.

“But how easy is it to hire Public Relations qualified staff when you are a growing company? Not very easy.

“Even since this time last year, demand for qualified professionals has spiked and employers are becoming very vocal about their

concerns.“Fitzwilliam Institute Group is

the leading PR training provider in Ireland. We started off with a Postgraduate Diploma in PR course, 25 years ago, to provide qualified graduates for the Public Relations industry.

“Over the years, we trained a large percentage of the senior, key people in the sector and they are today’s employers.

“They come back to us looking for graduates because our PR courses, accredited by the PRII, are the best available to the industry.

“We have an unique admission process for these courses – by interview – and we ensure our graduates are always the best. Sadly, what we noticed lately is that the number of students graduating is insufficient to meet the rising industry demand.

“There are more PR jobs than practitioners and employers are very concerned about the drastic shortage of PR qualified professionals.”

in a special position of having been on ‘both sides of the table.’

Katie Petherbridge, a second-year student in the Engineering with Management degree at Trinity, said: “I initially had my heart set on nursing and didn’t really have much of an interest in engineering. But when I participated in the summer programme I realised that there was so much more to engineering than I had thought.

“I couldn’t wait to come back for a second year, and by then I was pretty sure of what I wanted to do. I really enjoy what I’m doing now, even though it is pretty hard work at times, and being able to talk to the girls as someone who was recently in their shoes was really fun too.

“I loved designing activities for them to do, to show them what engineering can be like, and also talking about my own experiences in my course - such as showing them the resonator guitars that we designed and built for our second year project.”

Kirsty Monaghan, a third-year student in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme at Trinity, added: “This was my first time working on this programme and I was struck by how much I would have enjoyed this

when I was their age.“I also really enjoyed listening to the

academic staff talk about what they do, and to some of the guests, such as Aoife Wilson from Engineers Without Borders, and Gill Pierse from Google.

“It showed the girls just how varied the options are with an engineering career.

“I really believe in what this short programme is doing for the future of engineering and I hope to stay involved in it.”

Professor Kelly hopes the course will increase the visible options for female students, by raising awareness of what an engineering programme can offer.

There have been many ‘top-down’ approaches to encouraging girls in engineering, but the numbers are

stubbornly low – and not just in Ireland. The key to change may lie in engaging bottom-up approaches, as it’s known that role models are important in precipitating long-term change.

Professor Kelly added: “With what we’re doing here, we are reaching potential students directly, but more importantly we’re also disseminating a key message through what we know are the key information channels: parents, teachers and peers.

“Things like the posters and videos we make for each school – showing that their students engaged in the summer programme – and the conversations and experiences of the girls, their parents and teachers, can have a significantly larger and longer-lasting impact than other types of outreach.”

the revamped Honda Cr-V is truly an awesome motor to driveSeán Creedon

I HAVE just completed a week behind the wheel of the re-vamped Honda CR-V and I can say with some conviction that it truly is an awesome motor to drive and travel in.

Honda has made some slight external changes to their chunky-looking SUV, mainly to the head-lights and front bumper. But the biggest change has been under the bonnet. In previous editions Honda used a 2.2-litre diesel, now a 1.6-litre diesel offers 160 brake horse-power, which is powerful enough for an all-wheel drive version and also more economi-cal than the previous model.

And the very good news is that the SUV now costs €4,500 less than the model it replaces.

The model I drove was packed with safety extras. One system

will give you forward collision warning and there is also blind spot information. If you are driv-ing too close to the car in front, you get a ‘beep’ and a warning light on the dash. Lane departure warning will keep you alert if you are getting tired and I really liked the amber blind spot flashing light on the side mirror if there is a car coming up on your inside or outside.

Overall it’s a very impres-sive SUV and the only slight complaint was with the radio controls. It wasn’t immediately obvious from the infotainment centre as to how you would use the radio controls and I found myself using the ‘slave’ controls on the steering wheel for most of the week. The two big buttons on the dash are for controlling the air conditioning.

Inside there is plenty of head and leg room for five well-built

Prices start at €31,995, but the top of the range all-wheel drive version I drove will cost you €44,495.▪

adults. My version also had a full length sun roof which ensured a very bright interior. I drove a black version with blacked out rear windows, which certainly added a touch of class and in-

trigue for passers-by.There is an excellent revers-

ing camera and the boot is mas-sive. And still there is room for a ‘mini’ spare wheel, so full marks to Honda for providing a proper

spare.Prices start at €31,995, but the

top of the range all-wheel drive version I drove will cost you €44,495. Journalists are spoiled as we get to test drive top of the range models, but of course all those extras will drive up the price for you the customer. Road tax starts at €200 and rises to €280 for the top of the range versions.

Honda claim that the CR-V has the best power to consumption ratio for any SUV. The Japanese company’s main competitors in Ireland are the Nissan X-Trail, Mazda CX-5 and possibly the Ford Kuga.

Honda’s marketing strap line is ‘The Power of Dreams,’ and the CR-V is certainly a dream to trav-el in. It truly is a massive SUV, but it handles very well on city and country roads. I didn’t get an op-portunity to go off-road, but I’m sure it would be well able to han-dle rough terrain if required.

I would definitely recom-mend a test drive and if you buy it’s good to know that residuals values with Honda are excel-lent. Honda has been voted the car ‘least likely to break down’ by ‘What Car?’ magazine for the past nine years. Now that’s some praise and if they do break down they are not expensive to repair.

Trailblazing Mercedes-Benz Coupé arrives in IrelandOVER the coming weeks, between now and September, when deliveries will begin to arrive in greater numbers, eagle-eyed motorists can spot the first arrivals of the innovative, all-new Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupé driving on Irish roads.

Said by Mercedes-Benz to be the trailblazer for what they believe will become another new model segment within the international motor market, the GLE Coupé is a totally new concept that further expands what is already a rapidly growing Mercedes-Benz model range.

It enters the market here equipped with what Ciaran Allen, sales manager for Mercedes-Benz passenger cars says is ‘a very high level’ of standard and optional equipment. Standard is ILS Intelligent Light System, Active Parking Assist, leather trim and upholstery, satellite navigation, metallic paint, heated front seats and mirror pack, to name but some.

Special emphasis is placed on its ‘Dynamic Select’ handling control technology whose workings are visualized on a central media dashboard display. Others include ADS variable damping, ESP, Agility Control, Airmatic Suspension, Collision Prevention Assist and

ECO Stop/Start.The new GLE Coupé has a

distinctly sporty appeal helped by its very obvious all-road, off-road characteristics. With prices starting at €86,455 (ex works) for the 350d, the sleek, low-slung, four-door it is a car for aficionados - those who relish exclusivity within a design that is both innovative and sure to turn heads.

Likely to prove most popular here – and the one certain to occupy front-row space in dealer showrooms - is the three-litre,V6 turbo-powered GLE350d diesel. Stats include a 258bhp output,

a massive 620Nm of torque, top speed of 226kph, 0-100kph acceleration of seven seconds and a claimed 37mpg or 7.6-litres/100kms in metric language.

A nine-speed G-tronic automatic gearbox and 4-Matic permanent all-wheel drive are standard elements within its Sport Plus drive programme. Petrol alternative is an AMG-Sport model GLE 450 AMG with 4MATIC transmission.

Claimed by Mercedes-Benz to have the coupé world record for luggage capacity, it has 1,650 litres of carrying space and a towing capacity of 3,500kg.

The GLE Coupé is a totally new concept that further expands what is already a rapidly growing Mercedes-Benz model range.▪

I would definitely recommend

a test drive and if you buy it’s good to know that residuals values with Honda are excellent.

Check out the powerful baby Audi A1

the roof arches were silver which certainly made the car stand out in the supermarket car park. The silver touch is continued inside with the vents on the dash being the same colour. With a low seat-ing position you get the feeling of power as your drive, but it’s still very. In the back there is room for just two adults, but head room is restricted and your back seat pas-sengers wouldn’t want to be more than five foot, nine inches.

To be fair there are also exter-nal changes, mainly to the grille and headlamps. And there are new bumpers at front and rear to give an overall sporty-looking car. Anybody who is lucky enough

to drive an Audi loves the pop up infotainment screen mounted on the dash. You are spoilt for choice when the list of radio stations come up on the screen. And if the display is a distraction you can simply fold it down.

In an effort to reduce C02 emis-sion and improve fuel efficiency, the revamped A1 has been fitted with an electromechanical power steering system, which makes for very smooth handling.

The boot is a decent size and

while space is provided for a spare wheel, I had to make do with the dreaded repair kit. So if you are buying new you should haggle with your dealer until you get at least a ‘mini’ spare.

I liked the alloys and if you are hard to please there is a choice of 17 different alloys with this A1. Also there are 12 exterior colours to choose from with four con-trasting roof arches and 19 dif-ferent interior colour and cloth combinations and seven different

colours trims for the air vents. So the customisation options are huge. But don’t forget that some day you will have to trade in your multi-coloured car; the next buyer might be as adventurous as you are.

Prices start at €21,450 for the 1.0-litre petrol, while the 1.4-litre diesel starts at €23,390. Road tax is €180. I loved it; if only Audi had stuck on two more doors for our family! It’s also available in a five-door Sportback.

After many years of testing new cars I can safely say that there are no fans of two-door cars in our family. Two-door cars are very neat, but it’s so awkward allowing back seat passengers in and out and the doors open so wide that you always run the risk of scratching the person parked next to you in a car park.

But I think you might forgive those misgivings when you sit into this powerful baby Audi, the

smallest car in the Audi range. The A1 has been given a subtle

facelift. The biggest changes are under the bonnet where you now get a three-cylinder 1.0-litre tur-bo charged petrol engine that is so powerful you would think that you are driving a car with a 2.0-litre engine. I drove an automatic version which was a sheer joy.

Red seems to be the most popular colour, but my test car came in a nice shade of blue and

I LOVED the look of the revamped Audi A1 when I saw it last week. But I was just a tad disappointed when I realised that it was only a two-door car.

LIFELONG learning skills are needed by college students who want to improve their grades, adults who have returned to college seeking higher education, employees and professionals who want to progress in their careers, seniors who want to stave off or reverse the decline in their mental powers, and all those who want to develop and maintain a sharper mind.

You are born with the most amazing computer in your head but it doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Just like an understanding of how a lathe works may help carpenters build better furniture, an understanding of how the brain works may help you use it more effectively.

The brain needs

learning, oxygen, nutrition and love to survive and thrive. Provided you look after it during your life the brain will serve you well into ripe old age. The more you use your brain the smarter you will become.

Concentration is the discipline of being able to become totally absorbed in a topic. In any area of life you can’t achieve anything worthwhile without developing and exercising your powers of concentration.

A lack of concentration has resulted in students failing examinations, employees not getting the job they want, unnecessary mistakes being

made, companies going bankrupt and sports people losing tournaments and games,

with dire personal, professional and financial consequences.

Good reading skills are critical for success in all areas of our

personal, study and working lives. Reading feeds the brain with

ideas and information, nourishes the imagination,

expands our mental horizons, enhances creativity and builds our thinking skills.

Reading helps you acquire information outside the realms of your own experience. There are reading skills you can master which will improve your ability to read faster, smarter, and with greater facility, comprehension and retention.

Reading strategies give you choice as regards what you should read carefully, what you should skim and scan, and what you should skip and ignore. They can easily be adapted for different kinds of reading such as challenging non-fiction books, light novels, newspapers, magazines, letters and reports.

Learning maps are tree-like, radiant, nonlinear ways of organising information by showing graphically

the connection between central ideas and supporting information. In their structure they mimic the organisation of the brain with its connections of neurons and synapses. They are a way of capturing information, and provide a simplified pictorial overview of complex information, allowing learners to better understand relationships and find new connections.

Lifelong learning is continuous education and training from cradle to grave and involves formal and informal methods of learning. It aims to provide the best possible development and opportunity in personal, social, recreational, working and professional lifes. To become a lifelong learner you must be totally committed, passionate, motivated and purposeful about the pursuit of learning, and believe that learning is a continuous journey and not an end in itself. You must identify your learning needs, set your goals, monitor your progress, and modify your strategies as necessary.

Memory is the power to remember and recall events, and is a central part of our identity and life story. It is impossible to function successfully without a good memory. Memory skills can be used in the home, study, for everyday life tasks, personal development or at work. The effort and time involved in learning memory skills will be more than compensated by your improved memory, personal development and overall ability to

learn more effectively. There are simple strategies you

can adopt to overcome everyday memory problems including acronyms, acrostics and rhymes. Through this book you will discover how your memory works and about the techniques that will help you remember better and learn more.

Irish fighter pilot remembered in revised historyWHEN it was first released, ‘Men of the Battle of Britain’ became the standard work of reference on the aircrew who took part in the aerial fighting during the opening stages of the Second World War.

Now it has been painstakingly revised, updated and many new photographs have been included for the 75th anniversary of the battle.

Among the brave men recount-ed in this volume is Brendan Ea-monn Fergus Finucane.

Born in Dublin in 1920, Finu-cane was educated at the Chris-tian Brothers O’Connel School there.

He joined 65 Squadron in July 1940. Between August and Oc-tober 1941 Finucane claimed 16 Bf 109s destroyed, two probably destroyed, two shared and two damaged.

He was awarded a second bar to his DFC in September and the DSO in October that year. In 1942

he was appointed Wing Commander, but after return-ing from attacking ships at Ostend his plane crashed into the sea and he was never seen again.

His last words over the R/T be-fore hitting the wa-ter were “This is it chaps”.

Brendan Finucane is one of many men who are remembered in this meticulously researched book, which should be inval-uable to the historian, researcher, aviation enthusiast, or anyone with an interest in the men who fought against the Luftwaffe in the summer and au-tumn of 1940. or can you rent them at a reason-able rate? Don’t make things hard on yourself by trying to improvise with improper tools. Profession-als use the correct tool for the job to achieve professional results.

• Can you complete this project safely? Familiarise yourself with all aspects and safety precau-tions. Older homes may contain hazardous materials.

If your home has lead-based paint or asbestos, hire profes-sionals. Familiarize yourself with all the necessary power tools and read the manual before operat-ing.

• Do you have the time to com-plete the project? Most projects usually take longer than expect-ed. Estimate how long the project should take and then add 30-40 per cent.

• Can you complete this project by yourself? If not, is there some-one available to help?

• Are you confident that you can do a quality job? Complet-ing a quality project not only improves your home, but also gives you a sense of pride and ac-complishment. Likewise, a poor job can actually detract from the home’s value and appearance.

• Do you have the stamina to complete the project? DIY can be hard work. Lifting heavy or awk-ward objects, constantly going up and down ladders, and contort-ing your body into tight spaces requires a fit person.

• Do you have the patience to do the job right? When progress seems slow the temptation to rush through a project mounts and the chance of ending up with a sloppy job increases.

If you can’t answer yes to these questions do yourself a favour and call the professionals.

A right shower in your home supplies are mixed and blended together to give you a desired showering temperature.

There are two types of mixer showers - manual, where you op-erate a control dial to maintain your desired showering temper-ature and thermostatic, which automatically maintains your desired showering temperature.

Next we have electric show-ers.

With electric showers cold water direct from the mains is heated by an electric element as it passes through the shower unit, providing instant hot water for as long as you want.

The higher the wattage, the better the performance of the shower.

With pumped electric showers water from the cold water stor-age tank is pumped to increase water pressure and heated by an electric element as it passes through the shower unit.

Power showers are all the rage these days. Cold and hot water

from stored household supplies are mixed together and the wa-ter flow is boosted by a pump to create an exhilarating showering experience.

Each shower type has pros Anybody trying to buy a new shower these days is faced with a maze of options.

Grow it yourself: tips for the garden

genuine. Seriously, what’s wrong with that woman?

The impact of all this cold, wet weather has been consider-able. The new garden furniture I bought for the deck back in May seems to mock me, the cushions remain stacked almost unused under the stairs. Last weekend I actually lit the bloody stove. In July.

In the veg patch, pretty much everything is on a go-slow and it feels like the season hasn’t really begun, yet we’ve only four weeks of summer left.

We are only getting a slow trickle of ripened tomatoes, and as a result are still having to buy tomatoes for salads (imagine that?). Last year we were dealing with gluts of tomatoes from June on. This year’s most abundant

So let’s be honest – it’s been an absolutely miserable sum-mer thus far. Unremitting runs of Atlantic Westerlies have been rolling over like a relentless wave of dive-bombers dumping their misery on us - storms, rain, cold, more rain, more cold and then some rain.

This morning on the way to work it was 13 degrees. Let’s be clear, 13 degrees is just NOT a temperature that has any place in a summer day.

It’s an early spring day tem-perature or perhaps even a mild

winter day temperature.Watching the forecast on RTE

is becoming a nightly exercise in unrequited expectations. Each night I tune in in the hope that there might be some portends of good news on the horizon. Some vague hope of a change coming that I can hang my hat on.

But no, the dreaded words come again and again from a smiling Evelyn Cusack: “it’s go-ing to remain changeable in the long term”. I study her closely to see if her smile is through gritted teeth, but it’s appears the smile is

READERSHIP

Not everybody is getting too downcast about the poor summer weather.▪

crops are slugs and weeds. But we’re GIYers – so we re-

main optimistic. I met someone yesterday who said that Donegal postman guy who predicts the weather (and who, bizarrely, we seem to give some credence to) has said we’re going to have a great August.

I don’t care that there’s not a jot of science behind it – like a one-armed man hanging on to a cliff, this is something I can cling to. So it’s official - we’re going to have an Indian summer for Au-gust and September, which will get us back on track.

We’ll be enjoying our salad crops right up to November and the cushions will finally make their debut on the deck. You heard it here first.

Things to do this Month - August

To-DoGreen manures (mustard,

buckwheat, radish, rye, alfalfa, clover and vetches) are plants which are grown specifically to improve soil fertility and useful at times when beds are empty (as is often the case in August).

Grow directly in the bed and then cut down and dig in to the

soil. Give pumpkins plenty of water and apply a high-potash liquid feed. Nip out the growing points to encourage the fruits to swell.

Net brassicas to keep but-terflies and the cabbage moth away (and check undersides of leaves regularly for caterpillars). Keep watering in the polytunnel - mulch around plants to retain moisture.

SowContinue succession sowing.

Sow spring cabbage, red cab-bage, winter spinach, salad on-ions (in polytunnel for spring crop), autumn salad mix, endive, parsley, onion seed, Chinese veg-etables.

HarvestPick Beetroot regularly as

they reach the size you require - if left to grow too large they will loose their tenderness. Con-tinue to harvest tomatoes, car-rots, cabbage, cauliflower, peas, broad beans, French and runner beans, salad leaves, radish, tur-nip, potato, onions, peppers and chilli-peppers, aubergine, globe artichoke, courgettes, cucum-ber, gooseberries, raspberries and currants.

Tip of the Week – Sow Tur-nips

Turnips are very easy to grow and because they produce a crop so quickly, they are an ideal candidate for late summer sowing. Note that we are talking about turnips here (with the white flesh) as opposed to swedes (yellow flesh) which take longer to mature (it’s too late now to sow swedes this year). The green leaves that grow on top of the turnip can also be eaten. Water well in dry spells to prevent cracking. Harvest when small and don’t leave them in the ground too late in the winter - they will be a target for mice and slugs. At home I grow the variety Milan Purple Top. At the GIY Market Garden, Dermot grows Market Express which local restaurants here in Waterford snap up! Buy seeds at www.giyinternational.org/shop/seeds.

Boost for exports“In the past four years we

have seen major progress on this, with consistent growth in exports driving a strong employ-ment recovery.

“Over 100,000 extra jobs have been created since we launched

the Action Plan for Jobs in early 2012, with the export sectors ac-counting for almost half of this growth.”

Minister Bruton said the con-tinued positive trend in export figures is very welcome.

The main driver of the increase was a rise in the value of exports of medical and pharmaceutical products which was up 30 per cent on May 2014.

The figures, released last month, also show that in the first five months of 2015, goods ex-ports, at €44 billion, were up 18

per cent when compared to the same period in 2014.

Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton welcomed the figures.

“At the heart of our jobs plan is building a new sustainable econ-omy based on enterprise and ex-ports,” said Minister Bruton.

THE latest trade figures from the Central Statistics Office (CS0) show that goods exports, at €8.8 billion, were up 8 per cent in May 2015 compared with May 2014.
