An opening reception will be held from 3 to 5

p.m. on Saturday, May 5 at the Canfield Gallery in

the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington for a

new group show entitled “The Group of 7.”

The show features seven popular area artists

who, for several years, have gathered once a

month to critique each other’s work. Ramona

Cook, Beth Hill, Rose Klebes, Virginia McNeice,

Ellen Questel, Mallory Rich and Helen Young all

work in pastel and oil.

“A good critique of a new piece of work, from

someone whose eye and experience you respect,

is a valuable thing,” said Mallory Rich.

The show promises to offer art lovers a varied

and exciting experience.

Painter Ruth Frost will pres-

ent her work in a solo show at

the Dorset Public Library in

May. An opening reception will

be held for the artist from 11

a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May

5.

A lifelong self-taught local

artist, Ruth Frost’s work can be

seen in the upstate New York

and southern Vermont areas.

Originally an acrylic folkart

painter, she was encouraged by

artists Roy Egg and Janine

Thomas to develop her abilities

in oil. She is a member of the

“Rupert Artistic Ladies” and

has shown her work in Pawlet,

the Pember Library’s “First

Friday,” Gardenworks, and

Rupert. Ruth’s landscapes and

still life paintings are inspired

by nature and the beauty of the

Green Mountains and the

Adirondacks.

Street Y programming to Manchester at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 6,

with the first of three discussions entitled “Between Science and

Art.” The discussion will feature Eric Kandel of Columbia

Erik Kandel’s most recent book “The Age of Insight,” explores

how in 1900 Vienna, five of the best minds from Sigmund Freud to

Gustav Klimt radically reframed our understanding of ourselves

and our unconscious mental processes. Together, they initiated a

dialog between art and brain science that continues to provide

insight today.

Kandel is a professor of psychiatry, biochemistry and biophys-

ics at Columbia University. Alan Alda has hosted the PBS series

Scientific American Frontiers for 11 years, and is a visiting profes-

The program will be shown at Israel Congregation in Manchester.

guiding students on a very

ambitious mosaic project.

The three foot by five foot

mosaic is a collaboration of

ideas from students, formulated

into a design by LTS art teach-

birch tree (to represent stu-
