NORTHGATE
As development of Montgomery Village moved northward, in May 1975, the Articles of Incorpora-tion were recorded for Northgate Homes Corpo-ration. The third largest homes corporation in the Village, Northgate comprises seven subdivisions totaling 1,149 homes and includes both single fam-ily detached and townhomes. In the same month, models opened in the first of those subdivisions, The Points, located on “points” of land adjacent to North Creek Lake and just across Montgomery Village Avenue from the North Creek Communi-ty Center and pool, which also opened that sum-mer. Design-wise, this is a “sister” community to The Heights in Stedwick. Trellised atriums create a feeling of natural openness, and the rough sawn wood siding and earth tones of these 137 California contemporary single-family detached homes, built along a tree-lined, winding entranceway and hilly courts off Montgomery Village Avenue, blend with the parkland setting nearby.
In April 1976, models opened in McKendree, the first townhome community built under the requirements of the county’s Moderate Priced Dwelling Unit Ordinance, which, as was previously noted, required that a builder of more than 50 homes provide a specified percentage of those homes to be sold at prices controlled by the county executive. The community name is taken from the first name of the original owner of several farms that became part of Montgomery Vil-lage, McKendree G. Fulks, known as Mac to his friends, who was a member of one of the oldest families in the Gaithersburg area. The 212 McKendree I and II units are built back-to-back, a unique design developed by Kettler Brothers in response to the price limitations of the ordinance.
Shortly thereafter, in January 1977, models of traditional luxury single-family homes virtually identical to those in Fairidge in Patton Ridge opened in Williams Range, built in a hilly, circular pattern adjacent to the Apple Ridge Pool and Recreation Area. The name for this subdivision of just 62 homes backing to a portion of Great Seneca Stream Valley Park reflects the original land grant name for the area.
Backing onto one side of North Creek Lake are homes in The Points, and on the other side, the townhomes of Dorsey’s Regard, where models opened in February 1978. One of the land grant names in the area had been Dorsey’s Meadow, and among its earliest residents were Remus Dorsey (1770-1848) and his wife Henrietta. Thus, we hold their memory in our “regard” with this subdivision’s name. These 168 contemporary townhomes overlooking North Creek Lake again utilize the popular floor plans found originally in Stedwick Clusters, and later in Highfield and Arrowhead in Patton Ridge.

NORTHGATE
The 256 New England style townhomes of Shadow Oak, which also opened in February 1978, branch off from the Pin Oak lined Shadow Oak Drive and abut a forested area, also part of the Great Seneca Stream Valley Park. This is a sister community to Partridge Place in Patton Ridge.
The Overlea community, which opened models in 1981, represented a real departure in design for the builder. Instead of rows, these 254 homes are built in a unique “quadraplex” design, arranged in groups of four, with each home at a corner of a square. The interiors of these corner homes have open, “create-your-own lifestyle” floor plans, including two and three level living, open dining areas, upper level lofts and soaring ceilings. This community overlooks the open space of North Creek Park and was a meadow on the original farm. Thus the name reflects the meaning of the word “lea”, that is, an open space or clearing, pasture land or meadow.
Last to be built in Northgate was the Apple Ridge subdivision, a community of 60 New England style, zero-lot-line detached homes, similar to its sister community, Wethersfield in East Village. Every lot features a fenced yard, garage, nine-foot ceilings, family room fireplace and hardwood foyer. This parcel of land, located at the corner of Apple Ridge Road and Montgomery Village Av-enue, and adjacent to the Apple Ridge ballfield, had been set aside as a potential site for a junior high school, but was later determined by the county not to be needed. In October 1990, the Mont-gomery County Council approved a development plan amendment to permit location of “not more than 60 dwelling units” on 35 percent of the land, with the remaining 65 percent to be used as open space and an active recreational area. Two years later, a Sixth Supplementary Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions for the Northgate Homes Corporation was recorded, incorporating the Apple Ridge residential community into the existing community of Northgate.

APPLE RIDGE
The houses in Apple Ridge were designed with traditional Williamsburg colonial features. The Weth-ersfield community in East Village is its sister community with homes having the same house models, elevations and architectural features. The houses in Apple Ridge are situated closely together to give an authentic colonial village setting.
There are several different house types including two-story with basement, level lot, and single car attached garage units. Screen porches were optional and the homes have distinctive touches and details such as dentil moulding and white picket fences. All homes have a standard unvaried asphalt roof shingle color.

DORSEY’S REGARD
In the mid-seventeenth century, a particular land grant in the western portion of Maryland was award-ed to the Dorsey family by Lord Baltimore. The tract, known as Dorsey’s Regard, encompassed a particularly fertile area of ponds and pasturelands, suitable for farming. As years went by, the Dorsey family awarded portions of the acreage as wedding gifts to their children and grandchildren. Their hand-hewn homes, built by team work from local lumber and brick, became a familiar sight in young Montgomery County. That tradition was followed in the community of Dorsey’s Regard built as con-temporary townhouses with rough-hewn wood.
Dorsey’s Regard was built overlooking the North Creek Lake and Park and homeowners enjoy the wildlife and scenic views as part of this community. The townhouses have brick elevations and were built as level and walk-out basement units. Brick wall courtyards with wrought iron gates provide secluded and private entrances. The houses are clustered and staggered to set each individual home apart. Yet the exteriors of brick and rough-hewn wood siding, balconies and trellises give the com-munities a natural, coherent look.

McKENDREE I & II
This community name is taken from the first name of the original owner of several farms that became part of Montgomery Village. Mr. McKendree G. Fulks was known simply as Mac to his friends and was part of one of the oldest families in the Gaithersburg area.
The houses in McKendree were designed in the contemporary style with simple lines, built on con-crete slabs and with yards enclosed with high fencing for privacy.

OVERLEA
Webster defines “lea” as an open space or clearing, pasture land or meadow. This community over-looks the open space of North Creek Park, and was a meadow of the original farm.
The Overlea community has contemporary “corner-homes” with prominent trellis features and unique-ly designed roof pitches. The homes are two and three-story, level units, without garages, but with fenced front yards creating secluded courtyard entrances.
The contemporary corner design of Overlea homes offers maximum privacy on the exterior and optimum light on the interior. Models featured trellised gardens, open daylight dining rooms, lofts, high ceilings or open skylights. Accented front doors and trellises were used as the community color palette.

SHADOW OAK
Shadow Oak was named for the numerous oak trees planted in this area as well as throughout Mont-gomery Village. These beautiful trees provide shade in the summer months and many of the homes stand in the shadow of these oaks.
The Shadow Oak houses were designed as New England-style traditional townhouses, 20’ wide, built as level and walkout basement units with no garages. The homes are two-story with shutters, 8” beaded hardboard siding with 90% brick front elevations.
Shadow Oak has a sister community in the Patton Ridge Homes Corporation, Partridge Place. The houses are identical in design.
