Through some research, Climbing Tree have discovered that "studies have shown natural play contributes to the overall physical, cognitive and emotional development of children. It helps children score higher on tests for concentration and self-discipline, helps them experience more diverse play, and exhibit less aggressive behaviour. It helps them strive toward advanced motor fitness, and become healthier overall." In a society where our children spend less than 2 hours a day outside and with 87 percent of children spending more time playing indoors than outdoors, this will be a great opportunity for our students to explore some different ways of playing outdoors. Make sure you ask your children all about their Nature Play experience next week. In South Australia, children spend an average of 4.5 hours a day in front of a screen. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Monday 4th December and Tuesday 5th December we will be continuing our Health & Physical Education Week Celebrations by holding some Nature Play Incursions. A company named Climbing Tree will be coming to school to run some Nature Play workshops with classes who did not attend HPE Week excursions and a selection of students who did attend.

Light It Red By Chantelle Room 14

On Tuesday 31st of October, Room 14 held an awareness day called ‘Light it Red’, for Dyslexia. It was held in all classes. Room 14 wanted to do this project because someone in our class is Dyslexic so we supported this student in the class by bringing Awareness of Dyslexia to our school community.

Our Class also shared our knowledge of dyslexia at the assembly.

Firstly we watched a short Behind the News (BTN) video about Dyslexia and then we brainstormed key words on a whiteboard. After that we made a poster on a brown piece of paper about what Dyslexia is and how we would present this project. Following that we wrote a letter to send home to the parents and another note to Leadership and Staff. We started writing our speeches to go into the different classes and present what we understood about Dyslexia. Later we began to practice our speeches over and over again till we got it to the point that we thought it was good enough to be presented. Lastly we dressed in red for this special event and went into classes and presented our speeches and a short BTN video about Dyslexia.

I felt good about doing this activity and sharing my knowledge about Dyslexia with people in

the school so that people understand the difficulties that comes with dyslexia.

SCIENCE

On the 28th November, Abby, Erin, Tara and Mrs Krstic were invited to attend the grand opening of the new Windsor Gardens Bunnings Store. Abby and Erin joined Tara and Mrs Krstic on stage in front of hundreds of people where they spoke about Northfield’s herb and vegetable garden and the wonderful impact it has had on the school community. Abby and Erin were also lucky enough to meet guest speaker and WNBA / WAFL player Erin Phillips. Our school will forever be grateful to Katie and the Windsor Gardens’ Bunnings Team for all their hard work and dedication.

BEACH VOLLEYBALL

To celebrate Health & Physical Education Week (Week 5), a number of classes went on excursions. On Wednesday 15th November, rooms 8 & 14 attended a Sports Expo in the city where they participated in a variety of sports, including Cricket, Rugby League, Lacrosse, Hockey and more. Unfortunately the rain came down and they had to return to school earlier than expected. On Thursday 16th November, students from rooms 11, 13, 6 & 7 had the choice of participating in a Sports Expo in the city or a Beach Volleyball Tournament at Glenelg. Those who attended the city, participated in a variety of sports, including Lacrosse, Rugby League, Touch Footy, Golf, Taekwondo & more. Despite the cold, dreary weather they had a great day. We had 6 teams of students attend the Beach Volleyball tournament at Glenelg. All teams had a great day and managed to get at least one win. Our girls teams were the most successful with our Year 5 team making the semi-finals and one of our Year 6/7 teams making the grand final. These excursions were a great way to celebrate the importance of Health & Physical Education, and the positive impact it has on our lives.
