INTRODUCTION
DarwinandtheTopEndhavetobethemostunder-ratedplacestobirdontheplanetandshouldn’tbeoverlookedbyinterstateorinternationalbirders.Onthisseven-daytouryouhavetheopportunitytoseeover200speciesinaweekandexploreahugevarietyofhabitats.FromtheMangroves,beachesandmonsoonforestsaroundDarwincity,worldclasswetlandslikeFoggDamandMamukala,AdelaideRiverandSouthAlligatorRiverFloodplains,theSandstoneEscarpmentsofKakaduNationalParktotheOutbackgrassyplainsofVictoriaRiverandTimberCreek.
JustsomeofthebirdhighlightsincludelocalendemicslikeChestnut-quilledRock-pigeon,BandedFruit-dove,White-linedHoneyeaterandthebeautifulHoodedParrot,raritieslikeYellow-rumpedMannikin,Chestnut-backedButton-quail,NorthernShrike-titandRedGoshawkandforthecolorfulbirdfans,Purple-crownedFairy-wren,RainbowPittaandofcoursethespectacularGouldianFinch.

DAY1-29thAugust2018After introductionswe hit the road to start birding, first stopwas Buffalo Creek.Our first bird for the tripwas Red-winged Parrots, which have a roost nearby. Other birds we found in the area were Torresian Imperial-pigeon, Red-headed Honeyeater, YellowWhite-eye, Orange-footed Scrub-fowl, Emerald Dove and GreenOriole. Nextwe headedonto the beachwherewe found some shorebirds, these included Far Eastern Curlew, Great Knot, Red-necked Stint,AustralianPelican,SilverGull,LittleEgret,GreatCrestedTern,LittleTern,CaspianTernandCommonTern.Arrivingatamonsoon forestnearby,weweregreetedbyLemon-belliedFlycatchers, LeadenFlycatcher,Bar-breastedHoneyeater, Rufous-banded Honeyeater, Brown Honeyeater, Grey Whistler, Helmeted Friarbird, Shining Flycatcher,ArafuraFantail,NorthernFantailandGreen-backedGerygone.HighlightofthemorningwasanextremelycooperativeRainbowPittasittingintheopenonly5metersawayallowingforsomeamazingphotos.
RainbowPitta,alwaysacontenderforbirdofthetrip.
Next we visited a pair of roosting Tawny Frogmouths which were nesting, we also found Grey-crowned Babber,AustralasianFigbirds,Orange-footedScrubfowlandRed-collaredLorikeetswealsovisiteda localshorebirdroost,newbirdsherewereGreyPlover,Whimbrel,GreaterSandplover,LesserCrestedTernandRed-neckedStint.

ThelaststopbeforelunchwastheMangroveBoardwalkatEastPoint,herewefoundMangroveGerygone,Large-billedGerygone,ToressianKingfisher,Red-headedHoneyeaterandastunningBroad-billedFlycatcher.AfteragreatlunchatoneofDarwin’sbestcafeswevisitedGeorgeBrownBotanicGardens,herewewereinsearchofsomedayroostingOwls. Itdidn’ttake longandwefoundoutfirsttarget,RufousOwl!Wehadbothmaleandfemalesittingtogetheronanopenbranch,aspectacularsight.NextwewentinsearchofBarkingOwls,wedidn’tfindthemintheirnormalroostingspotbutafterwaitingpatientlyforafewminutesIheardonecallingnearby.Wewalkedoverandfoundoneofthepairsittingrightoutintheopen.
OneofthetwospeciesofOwlatdayroostsondayone,RufousOwl.
ItwasnowtimetostartheadingEasttowardouraccommodationforthenight,MaryRiverResort.WestoppedalongthewayatthefamousFoggDamanditdidn’tdisappointwithincrediblenumbersofEgretsandSpoonbills,newbirdswereAustralianPratincoleandPaperbarkFlycatcher.WestoppedneartheAdelaideRiverBridgeandhadgreatviewsofBroad-billedFlycatcherandbothmaleandfemaleMangroveGoldenWhistler.The afternoon was spent exploring Mary River National Park, here we found White-winged Trillers, Red-backedFairywren, Striated Pardalote, Masked Finch, Rufous Songlark, White-bellied Cuckoo-shrike and our first Red-tailedBlack-cockatoos.

DAY2-30thAugust2018We had a peaceful cruise on theMary River in themorning, it’s a greatway to start the day and theweatherwasfantastic.HighlightsonthewaterthismorningwereWhite-belliedSea-eagle,BrownGoshawk,CollaredSparrowhawk,BandedHoneyeaterandafewVariedLorikeetsflyingaround.Itwas now time to headwest towards Kakadu;we had a fair few sandstone endemics to find this afternoon soweheadedoffasearlyaspossible.OurfirststopwasasitenearJabirutolookforPartridgePigeons,luckyforuswehad15orsorelaxingintheshadeprovidingamazingviewsforeveryone.
ThefirstoftheKakaduspecalties,PartridgePigeon.
Nextstopwasatthelocalsewageponds;herewefoundPiedHerons,Pink-earedDuck,Hardheads,PacificBlackDuck,AustralianGrebe,EurasianCootandGreyTeal.AfterlunchinJabiruitwasnowtimetoheadnorthtoUbirr,herewefoundWhite-linedHoneyeaterandalsohadapairofSandstoneShrike-thrushessinginghighupontheescarpment.OurlasttargetintheareawasChestnut-quilledRock-pigeonsoweheadedforapicnicareawhereIhadseenthemrestinginthemiddleoftheday,itwasourluckydayaswehadanindividualdoingthatexactthing.FouroutofthefiveKakadutargetsinacoupleofhourswasincredible!

Withtimeupoursleavesweheadedtothehoteltocheckinbeforeheadingoutagainat4.30pm,ournumberonetargetthis afternoonwas Banded Fruit-dove. Arriving at Nourlangie Rockwe enjoyed the stunningwalk through the rockyescarpments and it didn’t take longbeforewe spottedaBandedFruit-dove fly innearus carryingnestmaterial, themale provided incredible views topping off another amazing day. Other new birds herewere the Sandstone race ofHelmetedFriarbird,LittleShrike-thrushandDuskyHoneyeater.
DAY3-31stAugust2018ThismorningwewerebookedontheworldfamousYellowWaterCruise,arrivingniceandearlywegotfrontrowseatsandsettledintoseewhatthispicturesquemorningwouldtobring.Itdidn’ttakelongtostarttickingupthebirds;GreenPygmy-goose, Forest Kingfisher, Sacred Kingfisher, Brolga, Black-necked Stork, Plumed Whistling-duck, WanderingWhistling-duck,Magpie Goose, Comb-crested Jacana, DuskyMoorhen, Brush Cuckoo, Red-kneed Dotterel, AustralianPratincole, Rufous Night-heron, Glossy Ibis, Royal Spoonbill, Tree Martin, Crimson Finch and Paperbark Flycatcher.HighlightswereapairofManed(Wood)DucksandincredibleviewsofbothAzureandLittleKingfishers.
ThemaintargetonYellowWaterandthesecondsmallestKingfisherintheworld,LittleKingfisher.

AfterabigcookedbreakfastatCooindaLodgeitwastimetoheadofftowardournextdestinationPineCreek,stoppingalong thewaywe foundapairofphotogenicBuff-sidedRobins,Black-tailedTreecreepers, Silver-backedButcherbird,VariedLorikeetsflyingoverandapairofnestingRedGoshawks,definitelyacontenderfortop5ofthetrip.ArrivingatPineCreekwehadamuchdeservedbreakbeforeheadingoutagain latethatafternoon,weenjoyedgreatviewsofGreatBowerbirdathisBower,Red-backedKingfisher,Black-facedWoodswallow,Blue-facedHoneyeater,Red-collaredLorikeets,White-throatedHoneyeater,White-breastedWoodswallowandourthemainreasonwestayinPineCreek, thespectacularand locallyendemicHoodedParrot. Lucky foruswehadabout50 individualscomingdowntopre-roost,agreatwaytofinishtheday.

DAY4-1stSeptember2018ThismorningwegotupearlytoarriveattheEdithFallsareaatsunriseforourfirstchancetoseeoneofthemaintargetsof the trip, theGouldianFinch.Wegot luckyandhadabout100of these stunningbirds flying, feedingandperchingaroundus.OthergreatbirdswefoundwereMaskedFinch,Double-barredFinch,Long-tailedFinch,DiamondDove,GreyShirke-thrushandapairofNorthernRosellasperchedinthemorninglight.ThewalkbacktothecarfoundusafamilygroupofCrimsonFinchesthatarealwayspopular.ItwasnowtimetoheadtoKatherineforbrunchbeforerefuellingandstockinguponsnacksbeforeourbigdriveouttowardVictoriaRiver.At a toilet stop along the waywe foundWeebill, Yellow-tinted Honeyeater, Great Bowerbirds and a pair of SingingHoneyeaters. The hottest part of the daywe birded a farmers damwhichwas incredibly productive, herewe foundYellow-billed Spoonbill, Variegated Fairy-wren, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Black-fronted Dotterel, Cockatiel, Rufous-throatedHoneyeater,White-throatedGerygoneandaveryentertaininggroupofApostlebirds.
Oneofthebest-lookingGerygonesinAustralia,theWhite-throatedGerygone.

Atour last stopbeforeheading to the roadhousewe foundanextremely rareNorthern (Crested)Shrike-tit, alwaysagreatbirdtopickuponthistrip.ArrivingatVictoriaRiverwecheckedinandhadaquicklookaroundthecampground,wefoundgoodnumbersofSilver-crownedFriarbirdsandfinallysomeperchedVariedLorikeets.ThelastpartofthedaywasspentlookingforPurple-crownedFairywrens,Ihavevisitedthisarearegularlythisyearsoknewexactlywheretolook.Arrivingatthesiteweenjoyedincredibleviewsofbothmaleandfemalestruttingaroundinfrontofus.WefinishedthedaywithgreatviewsofBrownFalcon,NankeenKestrelandaveryfriendlyRed-kneedDotterel.
Agreatbirdtofinishtheday,apairofPurple-crownedFairywren.

DAY5-2ndSeptember2018DayfiveweheadedwestofVictoriaRiver insearchofournextnewbirds,arrivingatoneofmyfavouritesites intheareawesoonfoundJackyWinter,LittleWoodswallow,Black-chinnedHoneyeatersandgreatnumbersofbothPictorellaMannikinsandGouldainFinches. Searching theareaeven furtherwe founda singleGrey-headedHoneyeaterandanextremelycooperativegroupofSpinifexPigeons.AquickstopbeforebreakfastwepickedupthetinylittleRed-browedPardalote.
AlwaysapleasuretoseeRed-browedPardalote.
AfterbreakfastatTimberCreekwewentoffto lookforour lastHoneyeaterforthetrip,again Ihadbeen intheareaplenty of times this year so knew exactly where to look. Arriving at the site I got out of the vehicle and had oneimmediatelyabovethecar,birdingisn’tsupposedtobethiseasy!LastsitebeforeretiringforthehottestpartofthedaywasjustWestofTimberCreek;herewefoundbothVariegatedFairywrenandPurple-crownedFairywrenandalsoanotherGrey-frontedHoneyeater.

TheafternoonsessionwasspentinthenearbygrasslandsinsearchofourlastFinchesforthetrip,weheadedstraighttoanareaIfoundthemlastweekandstraightawaywegotontoafewStarFinchesfollowedcloselyfollowedbyourfirstYellow-rumped Mannikin. Soon after we had a large feeding flock containing at least a hundred Yellow-rumpedMannkinsandfewChestnut-breastedMannikins,goodnumbersofStarFinchesandalso10orsoPictorellaMannikins.AdreammixofFinches!NotfardowntheroadwelocatedafeedinggroupofStarFinchesandCrimsonFinches,bringingup9speciesofGrassFinchesfortheday!
ItsnoteverydayyouseeYellow-rumpedMannikinsinthesenumbers!
Lastspot for thedaywasa ridgeline insearchofoneofNorthAustralia’shardestbirds, theChestnut-backedButton-quail.Wedroveslowlyalongtheridgebutdidn’thaveanylucksoturnedaroundandstartedtoheadingback,itdidn’ttakelongbefore4smallbirdsflushedoffthesideoftheroad.Button-quail!WejumpedoutandImanagedtogetthewholegroupagoodflightview.TotopthedayoffIlocatedaloneZebraFinchbringupthemagicnumberof10GrassFinchesfortheday.

DAY6–3rdSeptember2018Thetriphadbeensosuccessfulthatwehadafreemorningtogoandexplorethearea,leavingTimberCreekat6.30weheaded to the Bullita Access Road; herewe slowly birded along the road looking for anything unusual.Nothing rareturnedupbutwedidhavefantasticviewsofRed-backedandSacredKingfishers,PictorellaMannkins,GouldianFinchesforthethirdtimethistrip,Red-backedFairywren,HorsfieldsBushlarkandafly-byAustralianHobby.Afterbreakfastweheadedback towardsKatherine, stopsalong theway foundusperchedCockatiel, soaringWedge-tailedEagleandaflockofaround100Red-tailedBlack-cockatoos. IntheafternoonaroundKatherinewefoundbetterviewsofFairyMartinfinallyshowingitsfieldmarkRufouscapandtwonewbirdsforthetrip,CommonBronzewingandour last Honeyeater, Yellow-throatedMiner.We also bumped into a nice feeding flock of Gouldian Finches,MaskedFinches, Hooded Parrots, Grey Shrike-thrushes, Little Friarbirds, Varied Sittela, White-winged Trillers, Black-facedWoodswallows,Blue-facedHoneyeatersandaflyoverpairofNorthernRosellas,agreatwaytoendtheday.

DAY7–4thSeptember2018Thelastmorningofthetripwedecidedtotryforoneofthetougherbirdsinthearea,Great-billedHeron.Inthegrassyfields we found a few pairs of Australian Bustards and the area down towards the river was buzzing with VariedLorikeetsandBandedHoneyeatersbutsadlynoHeron.AfteradeliciousbreakfastatthelocalFinchCaféwestartedthedrivebacktowardsDarwin.OnthedrivebackNorthwehadgreatviewsofBlack-frontedDotterelandnearAdelaideRiverIspottedadifferentbirdofprey, Iquicklypulledover,BlackFalcon!Thebirdsoaredaboveus fora fewminutesgettingharassedby the localWhistlingKitebeforegliddingoffintothedistance,whatabirdtofinishthetouron!Whileenjoyingadeliciouslunchwedidafinalchecklistandtotaledthebirds,wefinishedupon205birdsseenwithanadditional1heardonly.Goingtobeahardtriptotop.
