Hi Everyone!

The annual pilgrimage to the Rolex 24 at Daytona started out great. The weather was beautiful and factory driver, Nick Tandy, had the pole position for the GTLM class in the No. 911 RSR factory entry which was adorned in the famous Brumos racing colors as a tribute to their long association with Porsche over the past 50 years of IMSA racing at Daytona.

The challenge race on Friday was one of the most exciting races I’ve seen in quite some time. Although, the new Porsche GT4 Club Sport was not a factor, it was still a lot of fun to watch. None of the cars were a match for the McLaren GT4’s amazing straight line speed.

Saturday was another beautiful day. The pageantry of the cars coming to grid, the introduction of the drivers and the grid walk are a thrill year-after-year, unlike the walk up the banking and up and up and up in the stands to our spot in Turn 1 to view the wave of the green flag and the roar of 47 race cars starting the 24 hours of Daytona. The best thing about a 24 hour race is you can walk to every point of the track to view the race, which we did, over 6 miles of walking on Saturday alone. We always look forward to the fireworks Saturday night and a final walk-through the garage and paddock areas before heading back to the house for a night’s rest.

Sunday morning we woke to rain and a lot of it. So much so they had red flag the race. They tried to go back to green flag racing several times but cars would crash and caution flags would fly. They finally red flagged the race for good and the best the RSR could finish sitting still was third. Maybe better luck at Sebring.

I have to give a big thanks to Diane Baus for a wonderful job putting together the Whirlyball event Feb 16th. We had about 30 members come out and enjoy the evening of socializing and fierce competition on the Whirlyball courts. I was happy to see some first-timers at this event.

The New Member Party is March 23rd at 6pm at Porsche of Beachwood. This is for ALL members, please come out and welcome our new members, see more details in this issue.

Now, onto a very important issue. In case you haven’t heard, we have a vacancy for club Social Directors. This would be a great for two friends or a couple. This is literally the “party job”. All club activities are, to one degree or another, social activities. If you have fun defining and organizing events, large or small, for a birthday, bridge club, class reunions or a company holiday party, then this is a club position just for you. As social directors, you will pretty much do as you both wish. There is no set description for the activities of the social directors. You want a winter party, Christmas Party, Groundhog Day Party … You name it.

The line that defines Social Directors are so grey, as to say there is no line. You are free to come up with a variety of activities that you think the members would enjoy. There are a few annual events you would be in charge of but, why limit yourselves. After all, this is entirely up to you as our club Social Directors. Don’t forget there are always plenty of members in our club who volunteer to help with every event. Build it and they will come.

Mike

Instructor Refresher Day Lori Bryant

Hi to all HPDE instructors and hopeful new instructors!

NORPCA is hosting a Zone 4 Instructor Refresher Day (Actually it’s one-half day) Saturday March 2 at Corporate College East in Cleveland.

We’ll meet from 8:30 am-1 pm with the intent of getting everyone up to speed to start the 2019 driving season!

Our topics include:• PCA insurance requires all drivers to wear Snell rated helmets. For 2019 we

are allowed Snell ratings from 2010 and 2015. The rating system also utilizes letters, ‘SA’ for car use, ‘M’ for motorcycle and ‘K’ for karting.

• There are some differences among the three letter ratings so when purchasing a helmet ‘SA’ is your best choice for in-car use.

• Helmets are available in open face and full face styles, driver’s choice on this option although I would encourage anyone considering a helmet purchase to choose a full face helmet for additional protection around your lower jaw, face and neck.

• New PCA rules around forward head and neck restraint systems and belted cars

• Insurance and liability issues for instructors and event organizers • Expectations for instructors• PCA standards for vehicles equipped with new technology such as accident

avoidance and lane change features• Physiological and psychological challenges of track driving• Track First based in Brecksville, OH will have a display of equipment for your

perusal

Please plan to attend! Registration is available for sign up at: www.clubregistration.net

Cost is $20.00/person and includes continental breakfast and hot and cold beverages.

Optional group lunch at nearby restaurant.

A great opportunity to get together with your track friends before the driving season starts!

Have you been thinking about attending your first Driver’s Education event? NOR spring Driver’s Education event at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course

arounding the corner May 10-12Do you have questions? We have answers! Do I need any previous experience? We’ll teach you everything you need to know.

Do I need to buy a helmet? You certainly can purchase a helmet but you don’t have to, the club has a limited number of helmets to loan to new drivers. Next month we’ll review PCA helmet requirements.

Can two drivers share a car? Yes, each person would sign up for the full event and we will assign the two drivers to different run groups. 4) Will I damage my car and wear out my tires? Each driver is assigned an in-car instructor from our team of highly experienced and knowledgeable instructors. We also have fantastic classroom instructors. Together our team of instructors will teach you to safely negotiate the 2.4-mile, 14 turn road course. We’ll ask you to have your car safety inspected prior to the event so you’ll arrive prepared and ready to run!

Will I damage my car and wear out my tires? Each time the tires on any car roll there is some ‘wear’ or use of the tire compound. This is true of driving on the track or to the grocery store. Your in-car instructor will help you learn how to properly accelerate, turn and brake on the circuit so your tires and your car are not abused

Do I have to bring a Porsche to the event? NOR Driver’s Education events are not Porsche only, many coupes and sedans can participate in track events.

What if I’m not as fast as other drivers in my group? We divide students by experience but not to worry, with drivers divided among four groups there will be some variety of speeds due to different car marques and drivers’ experience levels.

Can my spouse/family members/friends come to the event? Absolutely they are welcome at the event! Weather permitting we will have Parade Laps at lunch time and your friends and family members can go on track low speed, no helmets.

What will I learn at the event? You’ll learn a ton about how your car performs under braking, acceleration and cornering. You’ll learn corner geometry and how to negotiate braking and cornering to drive smooth and quick laps. You’ll learn how to drive safely with other drivers in your group. And that’s just the beginning!

Will I have the opportunity to ride with my instructor in their car? Yes! It’s an important part of the learning process to experience how different cars feel on track at different paces.

Will this be any fun? I promise you’ll be reviewing the calendar to see when you can get back to the track!

Additional questions? Please email Lori Bryant [email protected]

International GT Championship Season

Ed Baus

Welcome Back!

Now, Sebring...Many of you have heard about Sebring as I had. I have never been to Sebring other than I-Racing in my basement, so it is time to learn the track. Thursday is the practice day for us. We have four sessions to get out and figure out how to go around the track. The weekend does not start out well. The car has a shifting problem. In a 997 GT3 Cup Car, the shifting is done with a big stick kind of where the shifter might be, only it only moves forward and back. Upshift or downshift. No clutch to upshift, but clutch to downshift unless you have paddle shifters which use air power to shift for you. We have a KMP paddle shifter system, but it is acting up. Downshift is fine, but it will not upshift. It give a half hearted try, but that is it. Upshifting is done by still pulling on the stick and downshifting is done with the paddle we finally worked out. This is the equivalent of rubbing your belly while tapping your head all at the same time that you are hopping on one foot.

So, going into Friday, which is qualifying day, we have it all worked out. Mike is there taking good care of the car otherwise. Brake pads, gas, alignment, tires, ect taking care of everything so I can focus on driving. In spite of the distractions, my time on the simulator seems to have paid off. After the two qualifying sessions on Friday we are positioned next to the top competitor for our class. Picking up new tracks and being competitive quickly seems to be a strength of mine.

Saturday is now sprint day. The schedule has us doing two sprints. One in the morning and one in the afternoon. We get set and go out for the race. The race starts and we lose a couple of spots right away. I work my way back up to the front so that Lucas, my main competitor for the year, and I are neck and neck. I am able to get in front of him for a while, but the shifting problem we have had now gets worse. Now the car does not respond to a downshift command all of the time. This is bad. I can not simply clutch and downshift like a car without a paddle shift system because to add the paddle shift system you remove parts of the original system that rev match the engine to the speed of the transmission so that you do not break gears during the shift. So, what ends up happening is that to downshift I pull the paddle and wait, and wait, and wait. Most of the time, it eventually downshifts. But, this is not the fast way around the track and Lucas takes advantage of it. Now we are down to the last lap. I am behind but in a very close challenge. Second last corner before the last straight and the car downshifts fine. I get a great run out of the corner and I am chasing Lucas down the back straight. I am able to pull up on him, but not pass. I pull out like I intend to out brake him for the last and very long corner. I do not intend to out brake him, just intimidate him. I figured I would see if I could force an error. As anticipated, Lucas goes in deep in the corner to protect against by late brake move. Really deep. Really really deep.

OK, he went way too deep. Great news, I forced the mistake. Bad news, I was using his brake lights as my marker to start braking, so, now we are both way out on a part of the track that is taking us on a direct course to the wall. In a situation like this, the safest thing to do is to give up trying to turn fast, straighten out the car and do extra braking. We both realize this at the same time, get our extra braking done, get the cars turned toward the waving checkered flag and drag race for it. Lucas is able to get back on the gas moments before I can and it relates to him going under the final flag less than a car length ahead of me.

Back at the pits we find a wire that must have a short in it for the shifter and fix the short. We are actually optimistic that we solved the entire shifting problem.

Out on track for the afternoon race. Again lined up with Lucas as we take the green flag. I was determined not to lose spots again at the start. I race down the inside of the line of cars passing 4 or 5 before turn one and Lucas does the same on the outside. My inside line wins me the position around turn one and the real race is on. At the end of the first lap, going around the large sweeping last turn my radio crackles to life. It is crew chief Mike Garriga saying something excited. I always tend to listen when someone on the radio sounds excited. Tom, Lucas’ dad, who runs in a different class but still in points competition with Lucas and myself, did what Lucas and I avoided doing in the previous race. He went to the outside of the turn and hit the wall of tires lining the outside of the track. This does two things, it spun Tom around about 3 times and took about 30 tires and evenly spread them across the track. Back to Mike and the radio. I am not sure what he said. It did not matter what was said, the tone and camber of the speaking was enough to put me on high alert for the .3 seconds between hearing the radio and seeing the carnage. Most of the time, in a situation like this, time slows down.

Your mind turns every millisecond into a full second....

Continue the excitment on pages 12

Continued from the February Voices:

After purchasing our first 911, joining PCA, attending an autocross at Brainerd International Raceway with its one mile long straight away, and attending our first Porsche Parade in Brainerd Minnesota in 1976, the story continues….

We loved the Targa and it went everywhere. Aspen-twice over the looming 12,000-foot Independence pass, Jackson Hole, Yellowstone, Louisville, Lake of the Ozarks, Appleton, Lake Superior’s North Shore, Montreal, Banff, Jasper, Whistler, Vancouver Island, Seattle, and Maine. We owned it for eleven years, and over 60,000 miles the engine never so much as hiccupped and we never had a hint of a tire issue either. I’m attributing the latter to the fact that 911’s in that era came with a built-in insurance policy in the form of a seldom used space saver tire nestled against a form fitting 21-gallon gas tank. Despite being physically smaller than today’s models, everything for our long trips always fit. Earlier 911’s had several little pockets of space big enough for something, and most benefited from having an empty smuggler’s box in the front bonnet originally intended for early model gas heaters. It also was fitted with hooks behind and below the jump seats used for luggage straps to keep everything in place on those trips - a feature we really miss in our coupe today.

With complete candor, there were a few issues with cars of that vintage that were genuine headaches. For example, it had abysmal interior ventilation partially due to the miniscule air vents on either side of the dash which caused us to question the “who needs air conditioning in a Targa” decision more than once. And successfully defogging the windshield with the trio of incomprehensible air flow control levers was only accomplished through sheer luck and a healthy dose of profanity. It also ran really-hot, particularly over Independence pass where I almost passed out not when I looked down 5,000 feet over the guard-rail-free edge of the road, but at the oil temperature gauge stuck at 250 degrees. The fix was an eleven bladed fan to replace the original goof ball OEM five bladed unit in ’76 and ’77 models, and a right front fender oil cooler. Expensive for sure, but effective. A few years later it ran even cooler after swapping out the CIS motor with a 2.7-RS version with Webers.

Magazine writers today like to describe cars of that vintage as analog. And I guess compared to the current gen cars with their CPUs and other electronic do-dads, they were. What I do know having owned both, is that our Targa was light and a ball to drive.

Fast forwarding to today, would we choose our current 911 PDK coupe or a Targa born in an era of significantly simpler technology? Our current 911 with all its snort, hair trigger PDK, Air-Con, Nav, glass sunroof, heated and ventilated seats and Apple Car play is spectacular in virtually every situation. Never in the wrong gear, and it dove tails perfectly in how Carol and I drive it - brisk long-distance trips that mix twisty two lane back roads with occasional stretches of Interstates. So, with a cheap beer budget in full effect, I think I’d like to have all three. Our current 17’ Carrera bracketed by a Zambezi green 914-6 and a black 70’s to late 80’s Targa – with a stainless-steel roll bar. That trio would be the perfect complement to any garage art I could ever find.

Continued.from pages 8 & 9

Memory of these times feel like it is taking minutes and you have all the time in the world to make decisions. This is one of those times. Just like Tony Stark the first time he is in the iron man suit ready to gun down terrorists and save the village, I can see every tire. I can see them mov-ing, so not only where they are, but where they will be. I know exactly where the other cars are at on the track. Both the ones that have hit tires and are going slow and the ones that are still coming behind me. I see a path, my path, through the tires. As long as nothing changes. Calcu-lating time, distance and velocity I actually push the throttle back down. The biggest enemy in a situation like this is time. The second enemy is the guy behind you that does not have an alert Mike on the radio and has no idea that you lifted off of the throttle for 1.6 seconds. Through the tires I go. In my mind now that I am thinking of it, I am sure some of them were probably on fire like in an apocalyptic scene from a movie somewhere.Lucas, well, Lucas was behind me. Not right behind me, but maybe 2 second back. I am sure he was very target fixated on my rear bumper. He was not looking up. He did not have an alert Mike on the radio. After all Lucas’ crew chief is also Tom’s crew chief, so he was probably focused more on Tom than Lucas at that moment. Lucas realized I lifted for 1.6 seconds. He saw that I moved to take a tight line, he saw it as an opportunity to take a wider line and set up to pass me at the end of the straight. I get it. I would have done the same thing. Problem is there was no line. There were tires and then his dad stopped in the road. By the time he realized this at least two tires had gone under his car. He was able to move right enough to avoid hitting his dad, but he still had a tire lodged directly under the car.

Not surprisingly, the red flag came out stopping the action and eventually ending that sprint race. It was actually called not a race at all because we did not complete even one lap under green flag conditions.

To save room in the this newsletter for anything more than my story, I am going to quickly glance over races that did not have much to write about. The enduro on Sunday being the first of those. Lucas, who is the only one in the class that was a challenge, came to the grid with a leaking radiator from the previous day’s adventure. After they fixed that, he had no chance to beat me.

At the International GT races, they hand out fantastic trophys for winning the enduro. This was my first one. All I know, is once you win one of these, you want to win them all.

The weekend is over, back to reality. We drop the rig at Velocity and head home, and then back again a month later to go to Atlanta.

Remember how I just said I would kind of glance over races that were not that exciting. Enter Road Atlanta. Great weekend. We swept the event by winning the two sprint races and the enduro. Other than a couple of broken splitters and a lot of smiles, the weekend went off without a hitch. Btw, still upshifting with the stick and downshifting with the paddle.

Next up, Road America and then Mid Ohio.

After a long winter, NORPCA is pleased to invite you

to a relaxing weekend in the Mountains

Friday May 17 to Sunday May 19.

WHERE IS IT AND HOW DO WE GET THERE? The Spring Mountain Weekend will be headquartered at Seven Springs Mountain Resort – about an hour southeast of Pittsburgh. A fast 3 hours/190 miles from our area via the Interstates or about 5 hours/220 miles via a combination of Porsche worthy back roads and Interstates. We’ll even provide a suggestion of a twisty route including lunch stops.

WHAT’S ON THE ITINERARY?

• Welcome gathering in the Resort’s Bavarian Lounge 5pm May 17 followed by dinner.

• Options to drive hilly roads to tour Frank Lloyd Wright’s Falling Water or Kentuck Knob home.

• A chance to go caving at Laurel Caverns - the largest cave in Pennsylvania just further down the same hilly roads.

• Go in the other direction and visit the Flight 93 National Memorial northeast of the resort. Or just hang out at the resort – hit their SPA, play golf, or hike their trails.

• Gather again to share your experiences on Saturday afternoon and evening.

• Stay in the area for a bit on Sunday if you want before heading home.

ARE THERE SPECIAL ROOM RATES? Yes! Special NORPCA room rates are available starting at $159 per night + tax. Upgrades are available. We also will have reserved parking and a place to wash your Porsche.

WHAT DOES IT COST? $20 per car (we are working on getting special group rates for each attraction depending on the number interested in each option.)

HOW DO WE SIGN UP? Send an e-mail to Dan Engel at [email protected] or call 612-889-2711. Dan will send back a detailed weekend itinerary and instructions on how to book your lodging at Seven Springs and pay the entry fee.

Registration closes Friday April 20. THE SPRING MOUNTAIN WEEKEND is not that far away – so mark your calendars and send your registration e-mail right away. Registration will close before May!

Hi Zone 4,

The year started off with very unusual weather patterns for Zone 4. Could this be the sign of an unusual year? I would like you to make this an unusual year in PCA by getting out to an event you haven’t tried yet. Only doing track events? Try an autocross, or a driving tour. Haven’t been to a track Driver Education event? Try coming out to the Southeast Michigan DE 101 on April 20th at Waterford Hills Raceway. Or to one of the Driver Education events the following weekend April 28-29th at either Mid Ohio Sportscar Course with Mid Ohio Region, or Putnam Park with Central Indiana region. See what it’s all about, stay for lunch and you may get a chance to drive the touring laps on the track over the lunch break. Most regions have a monthly breakfast – Maumee Valley Region, or Thirsty Thursday – Eastern Buckeye Region, or a Saturday Breakfast with Central Indiana Region. Events are posted on each region’s website, or Facebook page.

Despite that fun winter stuff called snow, I visited 2 events in Indiana in January. First, the New Member Party for Michiana on January 26th, in Elkhart, IN. Many nice door prizes were awarded after a very nice dinner at the country club. The following Saturday, actually sneaking into February, I joined members of Central Indiana Region and Michiana in Ft Wayne for a 2019 planning meeting. Many great events going on each month for all types of interest from Auto-X to shows, to tours. This year the CruZionsville event is taking a break, so we look forward to see the CIR and Michiana member joining us for the Belle Isle Car Corral on May 31st - June 2nd. The registration link is ready, and more to follow soon. https://clubregistration.net/events/event-details.cfm?event_id=9535

My January actually began far from Zone 4 with my first PCA event of the year. I was asked to be the guest speaker at the Zone 8 Awards Banquet – Zone 8 is southern California, southern Nevada and Arizona. We had a wonderful evening, and visited a private collection the next day. I had the pleasure of presenting my story about the Journey with my father Peter Schutz and his contributions to Porsche history when he was CEO from 1981-1988. I am scheduled to deliver the same presentation to regions in our area, please check the websites for the details. Current schedule is March 12th Upper Canada Region, April 2nd Rally Sport Region, and May 8th Michiana Region.

I look forward to seeing all of you in 2019 –

Cheers – Lori Lori Schutz presenting the story of her father’s time at Porsche. Photo by Jimmie Mitchell

Thoughts From The Editor Tim Franklin

Greetings everyone,

In case you missed it, here is the big news! Porsche wants all it’s cars to be electric by the year 2030. The 911 models will become hybrids. Porsche is leading the effort with the well-publicized Taycan model. Porsche reports the pre-orders for the Taycan are exceeding the companies expec- tations. Porsche also claims it is poised to surpass Tesla in future pro- duction numbers. Porsche president, Oliver Blume states “Porsche is able to respond to demand cues be- cause it has large factories in Stutt- gart and Leipzig in Germany and Bratislava in Slovakia that are able to scale production, as needed, and having been doing so for decades. I believe Porsche will succeed, like they always do.

I understand all the reasons to move towards electric vehicles including the environment and energy savings. I can relate, since we are always looking for new technology and materials to improve the architectural and construction process of our projects to minimize the impact on the environment. That said, from a “Porsche purest” stand point, I can’t wrap my head around a hybrid 911 that sounds more like a golf card than a high performance machine with a great exhaust system that rumbles! Again, I get why Porsche is going this direction, but I’m just glad my Porsches growl and rumble. That’s my opinion. What’s yours? E-mail me your thoughts and comments.

Until next month,

Tim FranklinEditor
