FROM OUR PRESIDENTMike Garriga

Hi All,

Sue and I attended the Spring Mountain Weekend hosted by Carol Kelleher and Dan Engel. What a great weekend! I know it took a lot of time to plan such an event. It was evident how much everyone appreciated their efforts. So a big thank you to Carol and Dan. Look for pictures and details in the July issue.

A big thank you to Lauri Bryant on another very successful Mid-Ohio DE. I was not able to attend this year’s event because of family commitments but I am told it was an exciting weekend.

The next event will be the Porsche only House party hosted by our editors, Tim Franklin and Lisa Elias at the Franklin family farm June 29th. Hopefully this is their “First Annual”.

Sue and I are looking forward to the Summer Fun Drive and Dine to Gervasi Vineyards July 20th. We have attended weddings there in the past. The grounds are beautiful and the food was delicious.

Also in July we have the Porsche Only Independence Cruise-in on the Square. See details in this issue.

So after talking with Brad Kennett and my darling wife Sue, they will toss their hats in to the ring to be nominated to run for Treasurer and Secretary, so that opens up the Vice President slot. I’m hoping that someone who is interested in becoming President, after their 2 year term as Vice President will step forward. Two years as Vice President will give that candidate time to learn what is necessary to run the club. I look forward to working with some enthusiastic individual who is as passionate about the club as I am.

I know you are out there so please please please.

We are still looking for that energetic individual to head-up the Tech Sessions.

I look forward to see you at upcoming events!

Mike

DE - Mid Ohio Re-Cap Lori Bryant

As so much of spring weather this year has been, our May weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was chilly and partly damp. The cool temperatures and damp track from overnight showers did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the participants at the event! Saturday’s sunshine dried the pavement in no time.

Drivers from NC, IL, WI, NJ, TX, MI, IN, OH, PA, KY, WV and Ontario all traveled to the 2.34 mile, 14 turn road course to shake off winter and start the driving season! We had a large group of first time drivers including seven whom we met at the March Porsche Beachwood New Member Party: Don Olsen, Ralph O’Connor, Lee Lorence (and support crew Barbara!), Rob Kuebel, Mike and Catherine Rotolo and Matthew Whitson. So glad you all came to drive! Additionally, Bill Ives came on Sunday with the Taste of the Track Tour along with other members.

This event had many moving parts: we had an extra hour of track time on Saturday afternoon, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course pro coaches Tommy Byrne and Cole Carter were there, Parade Laps on Saturday and Sunday during lunch, Taste of the Track program with Don Velcio combined with a Driving Tour from Medina to the track on Sunday (Created and organized by Driving Tour aces Eric Hansen and Don Velcio. It was great to see fresh faces at the track!

There is a long list of people and groups to thank.

First and foremost:

Porsche Beachwood and Brad Kennett for their on-going support of the club and the DE program. Porsche Beachwood technicians: Joe and Adam were on hand Friday and Saturday inspecting cars and helping anyone with an issue.

Jim McFarland of Porsche North Olmsted for his presence at the event and all year as the club’s Safety Chair.

Jon Giese for writing the checks to keep the event on track.

Track First for their presence at the event and donation of driving gloves for the drawing on Saturday.

Trailer. Set. Go! And Michael Gerowitz for the donation of trailer tires given away on Saturday (Lucky Ted Pangrace won!)

Brian Peterson and Roach T-Shirts for the awesome sweatshirts.

Alec Connors Photography for shooting great photos (All accompanying this article). For more Mid-O photos go to Alec's website or click on his name.

Student Group leaders: Shannon McCue, Lou Brancae, Doug Colbary and David McCulloch.

Doug Colbary for cone set-up and take down and a hundred other tasks, all with a smile.

Kris Tatter as after-party manager.

Robbie and Tyler Bryant and Chris Donato as beverage and snack procurement specialists.

The instructor group without whom we could not have safe and fun events.

The students who signed up and came prepared to have fun and learn about high performance driving and their cars.

Last, but certainly not least, thank you to Bob Bryant, NOR Chief Driving Instructor, who keeps the event organized and running on time (No easy feat when the unexpected happens.).

Thank you everyone who supported the event and see you at the track!

Lori Bryant

The Next Step....Road America Ed Baus

The next stop on the racing schedule with International GT is Road America. Road America is a great road course located in Wisconsin. It is very long and very challenging from the ‘keep your right foot down’ perspective. This is now the second year that I have come with IGT and probably the 10th time I have been there racing. The Elkhart Lake area, where the track is located, is a very pleasant area and attracts many of the Chicago residents for weekend get-aways.When we head to the track here, we always rent a house. This provides us plenty of room for a couple fellow racers and anyone who comes to crew for us. The house we had again this year is just outside of turn 3 of the race track. It may not be downtown or by the lake it does have it benefits for the racer guys.Getting to the track, we quickly find that our biggest in class competitor, Lucas, has arrived with changes to his 997 Cup Car to make it more competitive than it had been at Sebring. He now has added a wide body package with includes wider wheels and tires as well as an M&M exhaust, which is a German made exhaust that really helps out with the lower RPM torque. Regardless, we are confident that the Demon Speed car will prevail. After all, I have the experience with the track that Lucas is lacking. There is also an unfortunately low number of cars in class. This is not good because the way the points system is created, you receive ½ bonus point for every car you finish in front of. So, not enough cars means that you do not get bonus points.Out for qualifying and racing I am very competitive and end up on grid ahead of the rest of the field with Lucas right behind me. When the green flag drops for the first race Lucas gets a lucky break and is able to get past me and a couple higher class cars before the first corner. Now I am need of playing catch up. Lucas’ M&M exhaust is paying dividends for him. Every time we hit the straight he is able to put quick distance on me. By the end of the straight I am starting to catch him, but he is able to keep his lead. The Demon Speed car and I just put our heads down and go to work, though. Every corner, every straight, we make the most of what we have all at the same time driving as smoothly and as carefully as possible to take very good care of the tires. Once you get your tires too hot from over driving them they start to loose grip and you end up sliding more. As the first sprint race goes on I start to see this happening to Lucas. This is a good sign for me and I am sure he knows it. The only way to recover from this is to make yourself smoother, which usually means slower, to cool down the tires.Lucas is starting to slide more and more. After 35 minutes of racing we come under the starter stand and they show us the sign board for one lap left. We go through the turn 1-3 combination which takes us to the next longer straight and Lucas has a moment through turn 3. Not a big one, just enough to make him lift a little. I saw it and I knew it would be enough. Especially since I also knew he was backing up his braking points for the end of the straights every lap. This means that he was starting his braking earlier and earlier. So, I knew I could go into the braking zone and brake later than he was. At the end of the braking zone and at the last moment I pulled my car from behind him to what would become the inside of the turn, Lucas braked, and then I did. At the end of the breaking zone and at the turn it this put him next to me.Lucas would not be one to give up that easily though. We climb the hill side by side with our door handles just about touching. Fortunately for me the next corner at the top of the hill is a left hander just as the one before was. This gives me the inside line again. Lucas is on a mission, though. He manages to put together enough traction to keep at my door handle. We continue to squeeze each other for space as we head through the next sweeping turn next to each other as we head to the left hander before the carousal. We will not be going side by side trough the carousal or the kink, which is to follow. The left hander again favors the Demon Speed car and this time it works. Lucas falls in behind and begins to plot his revenge. At Road America, the carousal and the kink are two very fast and very dangerous corners. The braver you are (successfully) the greater the chance is that you will win. In this last lap I find myself very brave. I am early on the throttle and lift for the kink only as much as I dare which leaves very little for error, but I am successful and I am able to put distance between myself and Lucas. The next corner is called Canada corner

Page 15: Northern Ohio PCA Newsletter June 2019norpca.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/0619-Voices.pdf · Tonya and Bruce Robinson Felicia and Derek Lewis Tech Sessions Looking for volunteer

13

from being the most north corner on the track. As we shoot through the straight I can feel Lucas gaining on me. The best thing to do in this situation is to move to the inside of the corner to take a defensive move. As I start to do this I can see that Lucas has his front bumper at my rear and to avoid having contact I only move over as much as I can and still leave him room on the race track. At the braking point I wait as long as I am brave enough to wait and hit the brakes. Then, it is time to turn in. I choose not to. It was more than a feeling than seeing or hearing anything. I choose to wait one more heart beat before I turn the wheel. In that one heart beat Lucas, after locking up his brakes, comes sliding past me and into the paved run-off area. I turn in as soon as his car is clear and run up the hill to finish the last few turns (alone I thought). Lucas is not one to give up that easily. He gathers it together and turns to chase me up the hill. My momentum lost from over braking for the corner. At the last corner of the race, I almost sign internally as I do as I had done at Canada corner and wait one more heartbeat. Lucas, consistent if not anything, shoots past me and into the runoff area. Now it is a drag race up the hill and to the checkered flag. Although Lucas’ car has more low end power, he is not able to overcome the mistake at the corner and Demon Speed prevails in the first race.At the second race, the Demon Speed car is able to jump out to a quick lead, but Lucas is able to catch quickly because our car is having tire issues from having the tires spin on the rims creating a heavy vibration. After catching up, Lucas follows so closely in an attempt, I can only imagine is to intimidate, that he has no room for error. Well, there was one. Mine. In one of the tighter corners I slip a bit and in the middle of the corner have to let off the throttle to save the car from spinning. Lucas does not react fast enough and he hits the back of the Demon Speed car. Not enough to send either of us off track, just enough to create a bump and go as they call it in Nascar. Well, in Nascar, there are bumper bars. In cup cars there are radiators. And, sure enough a half lap later Lucas pulls over to the side because one of his is damaged. The Sunday enuro was not to be our time. We had some critical errors in our pit strategy which put us behind on the enduro finishing order. We are, however, using this enduro as a learning experience and we are making steps to change how we performing our pit stops to avoid these issues in the future.Next stop is Mid Ohio where we are going to face our largest field of competitors all year.

Saturday, June 29, 2019

General info: timetrials.scca.com

Registration: msreg.com/NewNelsonTT

Registration & Tech open Friday evening and Saturday morning.

Gate opens 7:00am Saturday morning.

This event is part of the Great Lakes Divisional Time Trial Series

A Time Trial is a competitive event that takes place on a race course in a format that minimizes wheel to wheel racing. Com-

petitors are scored based on their best times from two 20 minute Time A ack sessions (full course laps) and one Track Sprint session (a

half lap run from a standing start, minimum 3 runs). Car classes range from standard street vehicles with no special safety equipment beyond the original

equipment confi guration to full competition race cars. No previous track experience is required. Run groups are based on experience, so Novices are in one group and the

most experienced drivers are in another with two groups in between. At the end of the day, we’ll have a social gathering with food, adult beverages and awards. It’s all about having #Fun-

WithCars, specifi cally ge ing to have fun with your car on a race track.

Thoughts From The Editor Tim Franklin

Happy “Almost” Summer…Everyone,

This month I’d like to say “Thank you” to Doug Tabbutt, from Switchcars, and Pete and Kate Jackson, from Pete’s Custom Coachbuilding, for hosting the “2nd Annual Spring

Drive”. It started off at Switchcars with a breakfast, followed by touring laps at Nelson’s Ledges and ending up at Pete’s Custom Coachbuilding for beverages and Mexican food provided by the Taco Time food truck!

The weather kind-of cooperated but the general mood of all the participants was great. It’s really nice to see friends and meet new friends at these events. Everyone has been very friendly to me and Lisa as we get involved with NORPCA. We hope more members venture out and attend at least one event this year. You won’t be disappointed!Until next month,
