Call 231-946-1510 or contact Emily Pochubay ([email protected]) to register. Please join Michigan State University Extension at the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Center on Tuesday, April 24 for our annual Tree Fruit IPM Kickoff! This year, we are pleased to offer a pizza party sponsored in part by the Grand Traverse Fruit Grower’s Council. Recent seasons have been challenging for tree fruit growers and we will host MSU Extension Health and Nutrition experts Suzanne Pish and Patricia Roth to discuss stress management at the Kickoff. Pish has led farmers across the state in techniques to manage farm stress, and Roth (based in Benzie County) provides local stress management support to farmers. The Kickoff will also feature several critical tree fruit pathology updates. Presenters from Dr. George Sundin’s lab will join us to discuss new information on fungicide sensitivity screening for cherry leaf spot and address brown rot management. Considerations for fire blight and apple scab will also be presented. Dr. Nikki Rothwell will provide a summary of key findings from our latest spotted wing drosophila research

Calibrating Sprayers for Success in Orchard Systems Benzie-Manistee Horticulture Society Michigan State University Extension Michigan State University Extension and the Benzie Manistee Horticulture Society are teaming up for a sprayer calibration/optimization workshop on April 11, 2018. This meeting will be held at the Blaine Christian Church, 7018 Putney Road, Arcadia, MI 49613. Registration opens at 9:30 and the educational sessions starts at 10am. We will discuss the importance of proper sprayer calibration and how optimizing a sprayer can improve coverage and control of important insects and diseases, such as spotted wing drosophila and cherry leaf spot. Mark Lederbuhr, Application Insight, LLC will lead a hands-on demonstration of proper sprayer calibration/optimization. We will also demonstrate a series of sprayers in cherry and apple orchards. This workshop is designed for growers and agrichemical consultants to better understand the value of calibration and to provide an opportunity to see hands-on sprayer calibration and how different sprayers can be adjusted to provide optimal spray coverage in different orchard systems. The cost for the event is $20, which includes lunch. Checks can be made out to the Benzie Manistee Horticulture Society. We also invite all attendees to stay for the Benzie Manistee Horticulture Society dinner and annual meeting, which will follow the educational sessions and will be held at Iron Fish Distillery, 14234 Dzuibanek Road, Thompsonville, MI 49683; the cost for the dinner is $15. We want to thank the sponsors of this event: Michigan State Horticulture Society, Crop Production Services Inc., Wilbur Ellis Company, and CHS Inc. We also want to thank our participating equipment vendors: Gillison’s Variety Fabrication, Precise Manufacturing, and Louis Gelder and Sons. Please RSVP to the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Center to attend this meeting at 231-946-1510 or [email protected].
