Kimberley Big hole and Mine Museum The most visited tourist attraction in the Northern Cape has undergone a major revamp and proudly traces the history of Kimberley and the Northern Cape. The diamond city was the location for the infamous diamond rush in 1866 and one of the greatest sieges of the Anglo-Boer wars. Today, the incredible Big Hole remains the largest hand-dug excavation in the world and recalls those early days of
diamond diggers, which has contributed to South Africa being ranked as one of the top diamond production countries in the world.

Explore the Anglo Boer War Route
The Battlefields Route allows visitors to relive the war between Great Britain and the Boer Republics
of Transvaal and the Orange Free State from 1899 to 1902. The Northern Cape played a decisive role in
the war with the famous Kimberley siege and many of the major battles of the Western Campaign taking
place within 120 kilometres of Kimberley.
The details of the siege, including the victories and setbacks suffered by can be relived at the Magers-fontein and McGregor Museums. Included among
these are the Battles from Orange River Station, including Modder River, Magersfontein, Belmont, Graspan. The town Modder River lies 39km south
of Kimberley near the confluence of the Riet and Modder rivers. The town has three monuments
commemorating the Anglo-Boer War Battle of Modder River in the vicinity.
By visiting the many battlefields and talking to the local inhabitants, a visitor is able to picture that
distant war and bring it to life, recapturing the trials and tribulations of all who were
concerned with the war.

The Frances Baard District Municipality is a place of wide-open spaces, where golden savannahs stretch as far as the eye can see. It is a place of arid natural beauty, where resilient green cactuses and tena-cious thorn trees fi ll the landscape, and bright yel-low sunfl owers can be seen following the sun’s arc across deep blue skies. Five gushing rivers divide this landscape: the Vaal, Orange, Modder, Harts and Riet, which give life to the region and its inhabitants.The history of this region is very much defi ned by the diamond rush of the 19th century. To this day, diamonds can still be found near Hopetown, in Kim-berley and on the banks of the great rivers that fl ow through the Diamond Fields.Apart from its mining roots, the Diamond Fields have a great variety of other experiences on off er.
There are cultural attractions like the ancient San etchings at Wildebeest Kuil and the Anglo-Boer War Battlefi elds Route to explore. There are several game farms in the region where you can see the endan-gered rhino and other game, and birders can spot a wonderful variety of endemic species. The fi ve major rivers are perfect for water activities like fi shing, pad-dling and boating, and explorers can go in search of the rumbling Gong-Gong Waterfall out near Barkly West. Unique experiences include the world-class Maloof Skate Park in Kimberley, agritourism in the lush Vaalharts Valley and a visit to the beautiful old Nazareth House Mission Station near Warrenton.

Welcome to the Diamond Fields!
At the heart of Sol Plaatje Municipality is the bright metropolis of Kimberley, the capital city of the North-ern Cape, and Galeshewe, the vibrant township on the city’s border. The municipality also includes the towns of Modder River, Ritchie, Riverton, Ronald’s Vlei, Beaconsfield, Kenilworth and Spytfontein. The municipality has a population of about 250,000, by far the most populated region in the Frances Baard District.
KimberleyThis diverse city is the capital of the Northern Cape Province. Its history began some 150 years ago when an 83-carat diamond was discovered on Colesburg Kopje. Word spread and soon 50,000 diggers from around the world descended on the area. The kopje (hill) soon became a ‘Big Hole’, as excavators mined the earth. The town that sprung up as a result of the influx of people was aptly dubbed ‘New Rush’, and was renamed Kimberley in 1873 after John Wode-house, the First Earl of Kimberley, who was the Brit-
ish Secretary of State for the Colony at the time.The prospecting rush lead to Kimberley becoming the first large-scale industrialised city in southern Africa. Kimberley became a pioneering town: it was the first town in the southern hemisphere to install electric street lights in 1882, it is home to South Africa’s first stock exchange and tram transportation network, and was a leader in aviation, establishing the first aviation school in the country in 1913.The city was also the centre-stage for one of the great sieges of the Anglo-Boer War when, in October 1899, Kimberley was surrounded by Boer forces. The city was besieged for four months before the British army freed the town after epic battles at Belmont, Modder River, Magersfontein and Paardeberg.Today Kimberley is a peaceful place full of memorials to its rather turbulent and exciting past.It is a city of contrasts, where beautiful Victorian churches stand alongside modern shopping malls and the ‘Big Hole’, surrounded by original buildings from the old mining town.

Dikgatlong is a Setswana name meaning “confluence”, referring to the place where the Harts and the Vaal rivers flow into one another. The name can be traced back some 300 years. Dikgatlong is located in the middle of the Frances Baard District Municipality and the town of Barkly West is its administrative centre. Other towns in the region are Delportshoop, Longlands, Kutlwano, Windsor-ton, Ulco and Sydney on Vaal. Dikgatlong is home to the site of the first alluvial diamond digging in the region and is renowned for its excellent fly-fishing spots and luxury game lodges where you can see many of the Big Five. The adventurous are encour-aged to go in search of the Gong-Gong Waterfall on the Vaal, where the quiet river suddenly tumbles into a gully and fills out into a tranquil pool.Today livestock, irrigation farming and commercial mining drive the district’s economy, although a few diggers can still be seen sifting through gravel on the river banks in the tradition of diamond dig-
gers of old! Setswana is the most widely spoken language, followed by Afrikaans.
Barkly WestLocated on the north bank of the Vaal River 35 kilometres west of Kimberley, Barkly West was a tiny mission village until the diamond rush saw thousands of prospectors flocking to the town in 1870. In fact, this is where the first diamond in the country was discovered in 1869. The town was initially known as Klipdrift (as in the famous brandy), which is Dutch for ‘stony ford’ or ‘stony place on a river’, before being renamed Barkly West once colonial rule extended to the area.

The name ‘Magareng’ is the Setswana word meaning ‘the middle’, and is derived from the fact that this region is literally in the middle of the country. Warrenton, a quiet agricultural town, is the administrative centre of the municipality and other communities include Ikhutseng, Warrenvale and Windsorton Road. The area is largely defined by agriculture, which is sustained by one of the largest irrigation schemes in the southern hemisphere. There are also a number of commercial farms which breed cattle, game, ostrich and goats. There are three historic stone blockhouses from the Anglo-Boer War still standing on the banks of the Vaal River, and an old railway bridge built in the 1920s – a line that still connects the Northern Cape and the North West Province.
WarrentonWarrenton is an agricultural town located 70km north of Kimberley on the Vaal River. Diamonds were first discovered here in 1888, and between 1905
and 1926 the area yielded 21,630 carats worth of diamonds. The town was originally known as Stanger’s Rest, then Fourteen Streams, but was finally named Warrenton after Charles Warren in 1880, administrator of Griqualand West and lauded military leader. Warrenton was on Cecil John Rhodes’ planned Cape to Cairo rail link. Although the railway reached the town in 1890, it wasn’t until the 1920s that the low level bridge was built across the Vaal River to allow wagons and motorised vehicles to cross. There are a number of resorts based on the Vaal-Harts Dam, where visitors can escape for week-ends and family holidays. Two national highways, namely the N12 to Johannesburg and the N18 to Mafikeng, meet at Warrenton.

This region is named after Queen Phokwane, wife of the legendary Kgosi (Chief ) Galeshewe of the BaTlhaping tribe who originally ruled over this area. There are two major towns in the area – Hartswa-ter (the administrative centre) and Jan Kempdorp. Smaller towns include Valspan, Pampierstad and Ganspan. Phokwane is defined by the lush Vaalharts Valley and the many activities surrounding the har-vesting and production of local produce such as olives, pecan nuts, peanuts, citrus, wine, cotton and stone-fruit. Wheat, mealies (corn) and lucerne are also grown. The Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme that sustains 1280 farms in the area is the second largest irrigation scheme in the southern hemisphere, and covers 36,950ha.Activities in the area include taking a dip in a ca-nal and exploring the region by 4x4 or even mi-crolight. Nature lovers can explore the wilderness on horseback, spot a variety of endemic birds, go fly-fishing on one of the gushing rivers or visit the
serene Ganspan Pan. Hartswater and Jan Kempdorp have all the necessary modern amenities including golf courses, shopping complexes, restaurants and accommodation to suit every need.

Life blood of the diamond fieldsWithout water there is no life, and this is very apparent in the vast semi-arid province of the Northern Cape. The Diamond Fields have been blessed with no fewer than five major river systems, namely the Vaal, Orange, Riet, Modder and Harts rivers, which give sustenance to the region.The rivers are also great places for relaxation and recreation – excellent places to escape the heat of
the day, to participate in some of South Africa’s best flyfishing, river rafting and canoeing, or to just sit on the banks, picnic, bird-watch and enjoy the verdant green surrounds that cut through the otherwise muted fields away from the rivers.

In 1871, diamond deposits found on a hillock dubbed Colesberg Kopje on the farm Vooruitz-icht, owned by the De Beers brothers, began a scramble for fame and fortune and the world’s largest, hand-dug excavation, the colossal Kimberley Mine or Big Hole.
By 1872, the tents and shacks of more than 50 000 feverish diggers crowded New Rush, the mining town surrounding the hillock. Over-crowding, lack of water, unsanitary conditions, disease, heat, dust and flies were problems
experienced in the mining town’s early days. In the fledgling city’s many gambling dens, card- and loan sharks thrived on a diet of other people’s blood, sweat and tears. The stakes were high and the ruthless ruled as fortunes were made and lost in a day. Some found only despair and heartbreak, but others struck it rich. Spacious homes began to rise from the dust and, in 1873, the town was renamed Kimberley, after the Earl of Kimberley, British Secretary of State for the Colonies. Despite the town’s severe dose of diamond dementia, it was, by 1900, a

prosperous town. Its complex, mixed up web of roads is a topographic reminder of a chaotic past. And not one, but five big holes, and a number of smaller mines, had been gouged out of the earth, reaching ever deeper into its bluish, diamond-bearing Kimberlite pipes! The Kimberley Mine was closed in 1914. Covering 17ha, it reached a depth of 1 097m and yielded three tons of diamonds. A bawdy shanty town born of a desperation and greed redolent of the American Wild West, Kimberley swiftly donned a mantle of architectural elegance.
Today, it is a prosperous, thriving metropolis with Victorian buildings that complement the more modern buildings of the CBD. Lacking the furious pace of South Africa’s larger urban gi-ants, it is perhaps the country’s most innovative
town. Home of our first flying school, our first stock exchange and the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to install electric street-lighting, it is mining a brilliant future from a glorious past.

The Big HoleOne of Kimberley’s major attractions, the Big Hole and Kimberley Mine Museum, was once a flat-topped hill and is now an awesome hole - the largest hand-dug excavation in the world - dug by picks, shovels and sheer determination, measuring 215 metres deep with a surface area of some 17 hectares and a perimeter of 1,6 km.

KIMBERLEY“Kimberley - Kimberley is a city in South Africa, and the capital of the Northern Cape. It is located near the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The town has considerable historical significance due its diamond mining past and siege during the Second Boer War. Notable personalities such as Cecil Rhodes, made their fortune here, and the roots of the De Beers Corporation can also be traced to the early days of the mining town. The city of Kimberley is the major centre of the Sol Plaatje Municipality which includes Beaconsfield, Kenilworth, Modder River, Ritchie, Riverton, Ronald’s Vlei and Spytfontein. The Sol Plaatje Municipality is, in turn, within the Frances Baard District Municipality (often marketed as the Diamond Fields), the smallest yet most densely populated region of the Northern Cape. The Sol Plaatje Municipality is named after the first Secretary-General of the African National Congress and writer, Solomon ‘Sol’ Tshekisho Plaatje. Steeped in exciting history, Kimberley boasts many traces of the past in its architectural heritage, historic sites, museums, heritage sites, and an incredible number of monuments.

The seemingly arid Karoo region quickly transforms itself with the first summer rains into waving fields of grasses with picturesque scenes of grazing sheep and spinning wind pumps. Visitors are enticed by its distinctive Karoo architecture, impressive churches and desolate valleys between flat-topped koppies (hills). This region offers visitors the traditional warm hospitality of its people combined with superb hunting, hiking and game watching.
Karoo architectureTake time out to explore the little towns of the Karoo and discover a unique style of architecture born of necessity. Most of the original town dwellings are simple
structures with a prominent covered verandah as protection against the harsh sun. The more elaborate homes have traces of Victorian style, but still maintain a Karoo-like integrity. The usual windmill in the back garden also adds a typical Karoo authenticity to the buildings.
Khoisan Rock Art Throughout the Karoo, visitors can discover the secrets of these ancient nomadic tribes by exploring the rock art engravings depicting the lives and customs of the Khoisan. Most of the images are found on low ridges of dolerite rock as the black boulder fields are ideal for engraving.
Vanderkloof DamThe second biggest dam with the highest dam wall in South Africa is a marvellous engineering feat and a fabulous holiday resort ideally suited to families. When the dam is full, it stretches to 100km in length and is perfect for most watersports including sailing, skiing and windsurfing. Dam tours can be organised to give visitors insight into the history and workings of the dam. The 6 200 hectare Rolfontein Nature Reserve is located on the northwestern shore. The reserve is home to eland, gemsbok, red hartebeest, Burchell’s zebra, white rhino, kudu, springbok, grey duiker, bat-eared fox, baboon, vervet monkey, aardvark and aardwolf.

John O’Reiley, who purchased the first diamond found in South Africa from its owner, Schalk van Niekerk, & took it to Colesberg for
testing. It was used to scratch “DP”, the initials of Draper & Plewman, a store which still exists, on the shop’s window. Once the stone passed this test. it was sent to Dr Guybourne Atherstone, a well-

Copper and DiamondsRoutes along mines of old and present day explore this important part of the fabric of the Northern Cape. The historic
copper town of Okiep celebrates its rich mining history with many original sites preserved as tourist attractions, including the pump house, chimney and generator of the old mine and a viewing point at the mine site.
South African Astronomical Observatory The sky is the limit at Sutherland in the south, where fans of astronomy will find the best star-gazing on earth at the South African Astronomical Observatory. Visitors can book tours to experience the dramatic grandeur of the galaxy.

The world’s largest forests of quiver trees (kokerbome) can be found outside Loeriesfontein, Kenhardt and Onseepkans. Owing its name to the San, who used the trunk, branches and its bark to make quivers, the aloe grows to four metres, stores water in its trunk, resists drought and lives for up to 400 years.
The sterboom or star-tree (Cliffortia arborea) grows nowhere else, but against the southern sides of high ridges of the Nuweveld mountain where it finds shelter from the blazing sun. The parks and nature reserves are amongst the best places to view this floral wonderland.
The 103 000 ha Namaqua National Park, 22km north-west of Kamieskroon, is open to the public throughout the year. The Goegap Nature Reserve is located 15 km from Springbok and offers 15 000ha of typically rocky granite hills and sandy flats. It supports 600 indigenous flower species, 45 mammal species and 94 bird species. The Hester Malan Wild Flower Garden showcases a spectacular number of indigenous succulants. SPRINGBOKSpringbok is the largest town in the Namaqualand area in the Northern Cape province of South Africa.The town lies at an altitude of 3300 feet (1000 m) in a narrow valley between the high granite domes of the Klein Koperberge (Small Copper Mountains).
This area is famed for the incredible transformation which occurs every spring, when the near-lifeless scrubland explodes into colour from thousands of flowers hidden in the dry dusty earth, brought to life by winter rains. One of the best places to view this phenomenon is at the Goegap Nature Reserve, a short distance south-east of the town. Apart from its spring flowers and various large antelope species, the reserve is also known for its collection of rare drought resistant succulents.

augrabies Falls national Park Arguably one of the most impressive natural wonders in the country, the Augrabies Falls plummets 56 metres down a series of granite cataracts to create what the original Khoikhoi residents called Ankoerebis or Place of the Great Noise. The world’s sixth largest waterfall is an awesome spectacle not to be missed. The park is essentially a scenic park with a rich variety of animals and indigenous trees. Various exciting new eco-adventure packages are available to visitors and include self-drive game watching, night drives, the short Dassie Nature Trail and the
3-day Klipspringer Hiking Trail, which takes hikers from the plateau into the depths of the gorge.
Riemvasmaak - A Community RestoredBest accessed by 4x4 vehicles, this spectacular mountain desert wilderness with its towering granite canyons is owned and run by the community of Riemvasmakers. The sundrenched Kalahari with its endless horizons and undulating dunes evokes memories of a land before time and is rich in birdlife, including 40 raptor and vulture species (of 67 species in South Africa) and seven owl species (of 12 species nationally).
The Roaring Kalahari Route Enjoy an adventure on the back roads of the Kalahari. This route is a tribute to Mother Nature’s creatures – big and small. Visitors can expect the thrills of the King of the Animal kingdom in close-up encounters with the Kalahari lions in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, but also meet the smaller desert creatures and discover their secret world.
From Beneath the SurfaceBehind the apparent tranquillity of the Kalahari, the immense natural resources of this region remain a surprising phenomenon. Mammoth trucks and colossal machinery bear testament to the Kalahari’s reputation for as a superior source for manganese and other minerals.
The Eye of KurumanThe largest spring in the southern hemisphere brings relief to the desert. Kuruman is known as the ‘Oasis of the Kalahari’ and is blessed with a permanent source of water. Gasegonyane, which
means little water calabash, is commonly known as ‘Die Oog’ and delivers 20-30 million litres of crystal clear water daily to its approximately 10 000 inhabitants. The town nestles in a shallow valley surrounded by low hills and is named after a Bushman chief, who lived in the area in the 1700s.
Hunters’ Paradise The Kalahari region has established itself as one of the major hunting areas in South Africa and is ideally situated on a main access route between Gauteng and Namibia/Cape Town via Upington. The Northern Cape is home to more than 1200 registered fenced game farms covering over 2,6-million hectares and presents excellent hunting opportunities. The Hunting & Wildlife Industry is stringently regulated by the Department of Environment and Nature Conservation to ensure adherence to strict guidelines and operational procedures.

The sheer size and distances of the Kalahari can be intimidating, but the members of the Roaring Kalahari Route make visitors feel at ease in this vast wilderness. The route starts in the oasis of Kuruman before heading through the tree-filled town of Kathu and northwards to Dibeng and the mining towns of Hotazel and Black Rock. It then heads to McCarthy’s Rest on the Botswana border, back down to Van Zylsrus and westward to Askham with a detour to the unforgettable Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
The next stop on the itinerary is Upington, the largest town on the route before heading back east to Groblershoop and the Boegoeberg Dam. A stay-over at the Witsand Nature Reserve is an absolute must before continuing the journey to Griquatown and Danielskuil. Along the way visitors can visit and stay at some of the most hospitable and colourful guest houses, guest farms, resorts, parks and nature reserves in the country.

Ga-SeGonyana Municipality Ga-Segonyana municipality is a former cross-boundary municipality with areas in the Northern Cape and the North-West Province.On the Ghaap Plateau 1 131m above sea level, Kuruman is the principal town of the the municipality and the Kalahari section of the Namakwari Route. The origin of the town’s name is uncertain but it is generally accepted as being a variation of the name of an 18th-century San leader, Kudumane. Known as the ‘Oasis of the Kalahari’, Kuruman is blessed with a permanent and abundant source of water. More densely vegetated than most oases, its water flows from Gasegonyana, commonly called The Eye. A spring delivering 20 million litres of water daily to 71 000 inhabitants, the water flows from solution cavities in the dolomitic Ghaap Plateau and cracks in the mammoth doleritic dykes and sills that thrust their way into prominence from the earth’s core some 190 million years ago.

Moffat Mission Station Moffat Lane. Dr Robert Moffat and his wife, Mary, arrived in Kuruman from Scotland in 1820. The Moffat Church was completed in 1838 and, for years, was the largest building

truce tree Seodin Rd. The 1914 Rebellion left its mark on Kuruman. General J Kemp and 700 rebels invaded Kuruman to replenish their rations. Captain Frylinck and Lieutenant Gash were responsible for the safety of Kuruman and, after a short skirmish, the garrison surrendered. An armistice was negotiated beneath this shady camelthorn tree.
tswalu Kalahari reserve Tswalu, meaning ‘new beginning’ in the Tswana language, is the largest privately owned game reserve in South Africa. The historic home of the San and malaria-free, the reserve has over 70 species of mammals and more than 200 bird species. Wonderwerk cave & rock paintings 43km south down Daniëlskuil road on the farm Wonderwerk. Archaeological excavations of the 140m long cave suggest datings of more than a million years old to the early twentieth century when members of the Bosman family made it their home.
