Interview Season in Full Bloom

Over the spring semester, five candidates visited the Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM) Department as part of a series of interviews aimed at filling two positions within PRTM and the Center for Geospatial Analytics (CGA).

Each candidate who visited the department during the interview process presented a seminar on Advancing Research in Human Dimensions & Geospatial Analytics. Graduate students had a robust role in the interview process: they attended the candidates’ seminars, met with the candidates after the seminar in a ‘graduate students only’ session, and hosted candidates at lunch during their stay in Raleigh. At the time of press, one of these position has already been filled. Dr. Bethany Cutts has accepted an offer to join PRTM as Assistant Professor of Human Dimensions and Geospatial Analytics and Fellow in the Center for Geospatial Analytics. Bethany brings an active and growing research and teaching program focused on natural resource decision-making, social equity, and geospatial methods. She starts August 15.Meanwhile, interview season continues as the College of Natural Resources (CNR) begins its interview process for three “cluster hires” to include: Assistant Professor of Sustainability Science or Engineering (Department of Forest Biomaterials); Assistant Professor of Ecology (Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources); and Assistant Professor of Human Dimensions and Policy (Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism

Back to the Drawing Board: A Resume Workshop

It was time for a Cup of Joe! The dreaded subject of job searching and having only two pages in which to convey our existences to the frequently anonymous employer came up. With confidence in the value of our endeavors, we braced ourselves for the assault on our ego to come. Armed with caffeine, big, fat red markers, tape, hammers, and nails we set ourselves to work on tearing these extensive Leviathans down to size and piecing together the pertinent points that would bypass the scrutiny of the wicked eyes of the paycheck givers. Thoughtful dialogue ensued, changes were made, and the multitude of suggestions found their way onto the typed and all too formal self-portraits. For those of you who missed it, the NC State Career Development Center offers feedback services for you on your resume. For those of you who made it, your erudite contributions were greatly valued. —Matt Jurjonas

PRTM Spring Celebration

Students and faculty of NC State’s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management Department gathered together for an end-of-year picnic at Raleigh’s Pullen Park. Graduate students Johnny Carawan (Outstanding MPRTM Student), Mirza Farzana Halim (Outstanding PRTM Masters Student), and Gareth Jones (Outstanding PRTM Doctoral Student) were presented with awards at the conclusion of the evening. Thanks to everyone who helped plan, organize, and setup/clean up the event, as well as everyone who was able to attend. —Kati McArdle

No-Rooz 2016

The Iranian Student Association celebrated No-Rooz 1395, the Iranian New Year, on March 27th at Talley Student Union. Live music performed by NC State students, Iranian food and sweets, and dances were part of this event. No-Rooz, which means “New Day”, is traditionally celebrated at the exact astronomical beginning of spring. No-Rooz, with its’ uniquely Iranian characteristics, has been celebrated for at least 3,000 years and is deeply rooted in the rituals and traditions of the ancient Persian religion of Zoroastrian.

No-Rooz is the biggest celebration for Iranians, so they make sure to receive the New Year with their houses sparkling and wearing new clothes. But a major part of the rituals is setting the table with seven items that in ancient times represented the seven creations and the seven holy immortals protecting them: Seeb (apple), Sabze (green grass), Serke (vinegar), Samanoo (a meal made out of wheat), Senjed (a kind of berry), Sekke (coin), and Seer (garlic). Most people also place the Qoran on their table to bless the New Year. At NC State’s event, Kati McArdle and Ladan Ghahramani read a poem aloud, in Persian and English. Ladan also performed traditional music with other Iranian students. —Ladan Ghahramani

Bearodactyls at it Again

The Bearodactyls were at it again, awesome as usual. We wrapped up another exciting semester with movies, games, community service, and zombies. Those smarty Bearodactyls not only work hard in their studies, publishing here, presenting there, but they also enjoy a little fun every now and then. The Bearodactyls could be found premiering the new National Parks Adventure movie by morning at the IMAX theatre at Marbles Kids Museum and playing volleyball by night in NC State’s intramural league. IMs allow a way for

these graduate students to step away from their desks for a bit and stomp* all over undergraduates. The Bearodactyls also enjoyed serving the local campus community by volunteering to relabel trash/recycling receptacles in all our office buildings. Lastly, the survival skills of these graduates were tested as we found clues, solved riddles, worked together, and battled zombies to escape from a locked room with a crazy and loud doctor. CNR continues to graduate the most well-rounded individuals. Go Bearodactyls! —Kate Burroughs

Raleigh Greenways, a Little Greener

It was a sunny and windy Saturday morning, and graduate students in PRTM teamed up to help clean up and clear out a section of the Capital Area Greenway Trail, a network of public, open spaces and trails spanning over 100 miles. The PRTM crew met up at Chavis Park, and worked along the greenway heading east to pick up trash, and remove invasive plant species from the corridor.

Thanks to Kate Burroughs for organizing another great event, and to everyone who helped make a positive difference! For information on how to become involved as a greenways volunteer, visit the City of Raleigh’s website. —Kati McArdle

Natural Resources Career Panel

The Natural Resources Career Panel was held on January 20th, 2016. Four panelists, Jessica Mayer, Christopher Serenari, Kathleen McGinley, and Derek van Berkel, shared their experience and advice with a group of graduate and undergraduate students. After the panel, an informal networking session ensued with refreshments. Feedback from the follow-up evaluation showed that attendees enjoyed the event and are interested in another career panel in the future. —Anna Miller

*The Bearodactyls have an approximately 2-25 record and are usually clobbered by undergraduate teams. However, the Bearodactyl spirit remains intact and unscathed and will continue to live on.
