A construction kick-off meeting was held on Monday, March 21 at Colonial Middle School in Pymouth Meeting to keep residents informed as con-struction begins on the southern section of the project area (Mid-County

Interchange to Berks Road). The meeting, held from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, was open to the residents of Plymouth, Whitpain and Worcester Townships and included plans displays and a presentation by project team members to inform community members of what to expect during the construction phase.

Upon arrival, attendees were given the opportunity to view displays and speak with members of the project team. At 6:30, everyone was invited to move to the auditorium for a presentation. Topics included the transi-tion from the design phase to the construction phase, an introduction of the construction team members, public outreach methods and how residents can stay involved and receive information about construction and detours, and a preview of the 2011 construction timeline. A question and answer session followed the presentation, and then attendees were invited to consult with project team members about plans related to their individual properties.

At the conclusion of the meeting, attendees were invited to complete comment forms pertaining to the meeting and their preferences for future communication concerning information related to the construction project. The Turnpike remains committed to updating residents living adjacent to the project area on construction activities that might impact private property.

Prior to the construction kick-off, the PTC met with Plymouth, Whitpain and Worcester Township officials and addressed their boards on February 14, 15 and 16. The PTC introduced the new southern section construction team and briefed the officials on the upcom-ing project schedule.

The PTC met with legislative, County and Township pub-lic officials last month to provide them with an update on the design progress of the northern section of the

project area, which begins at Berks Road and extends north to the Lansdale Interchange, Mileposts A26-A30.

The meeting was held on February 18 at the Towamencin Town-ship building in Lansdale. Representatives from the Montgom-ery County Planning Commission, Worcester, Upper Gwynedd and Towamencin Townships, and the offices of Representative Kate Harper and Representative Matthew D. Bradford, were in attendance.

Gerald Rollman, PTC Project Manager, discussed the bridge replacement schedule for the northern section. Work on the Morris Road bridge (Milepost A27.2) has resumed, after a break due to inhibiting winter weather, and is expected to conclude in mid-May. The Sumneytown Pike (Milepost A30) bridge is scheduled for a spring 2012 construction start, but some preliminary work may get underway in late 2011. The final bridge replacement project, Bustard Road (Milepost A29),

Public Officials Meeting Held in Towamencin Township on Northern Section Design Progress

will be initiated during the northern section’s mainline roadway reconstruction in 2014. This bridge will be closed to traffic be-tween March and November 2014, with a detour implemented.

The PTC announced that an open house plans display is an-ticipated for fall of this year, which will showcase the northern section’s final design plans. Additionally, a noise wall commu-nity meeting is expected to be held in 2012 for property owners who are directly adjacent and closest to proposed noise walls in the northern section. These property owners will be asked to provide input regarding whether or not they want the noise walls and to provide their color and texture preferences for the wall located in the vicinity of their property.

Other discussion items included stormwater management, util-ity coordination, and communication with the Townships when accidents occur on the Turnpike. While a majority of the meet-ing focused on the northern section’s design progress, some attention was paid to the construction kick-off for the southern section, Mid-County Interchange to Berks Road.
