    There are mixed feelings abound thise of year for many of us gardeners asook forward to a break from thek of pruning, watering and weedingare also sad to seeend of ourutiful flowers andh produce.

    While harvestinge Sweet Annieerday, many otherthings to gete came to mind.e are a few that also be on your

    or may haveped your mind.

    winter battle will be made easier by

    making sure the plants have plenty ofmoisture before the ground freezes. Givethem an extra drink.

    The sunny days of winter are awelcome sight to us humans, but theycan cause trouble for some landscapeplants such as young thin-barked trees.

    The bark tends to split vertically on

    the sunny side of the tree because as thetemperatures quickly drop at sundownthe outer bark cools down and contractsfaster than the inner bark. Therefore theouter bark must split to accommodatewhats underneath it. You can protect thetree by wrapping the trunk with acommercial tree wrap. I like to use asection of black plastic flexible drainpipe.

    Purchase the size that will fit aroundyour tree plus a couple of inches and the

    length you need to cover. Cut a slit inthe length of the drain pipe and fit itaround your tree. In the spring I take itoff and save it for the next winter.

    I like to use red dogwood twigs andseveral varieties of evergreens in myoutdoor pots for seasonal dcor. Toomany times I have forgotten to do it

    early enough and have found that twigsand pines will not pierce frozen soil. Soif you have some outdoor pots that needa little sprucing up, now would be agood time to get that done.

    Winter mulch is not critical for allgarden plants, but it can mean survivalfor some of the less hardy ones.

    Winter mulch protects against widetemperature fluctuations in the soil andprevents extreme cold temperaturesfrom harming plants. The soil has atendency to heave when subjected towide temperature changes, pushing theplant roots out of the ground. Shallow-rooted plants or newly planted stock thathave not had a chance to develop a solidroot system are most subjected to theheaving process.

    Using 2 to 4 inches of mulch such as

    bark chips, straw or pine needles willgive your plants enough protection.
