Greetings, and thanks for join-ing me for another week. First, working the system! After con-sulting with a lawyer, EvanDobelle, president ofMassachusetts Westfield StateUniversity, accused of billingthe state for unauthorized travelexpenses, is reportedly consid-ering claiming that he actuallyself-reported the violations assoon as suspicions turned up.Heres the good part: Dobellesays he would thus be entitled tothe protection of the statewhistleblower statute, whichshields inside informers whenthey expose wrongdoing. [The

    Republican]

Next, a beer promoted as thestrongest in the world comeswith an alcohol punch of 67. 5

percent (135 proof), the equiva-lent of 15 shots. Snake Venom, created by BrewmeisterBrewery, comes with a bright-yellow warning tag that saysonly one bottle should be con-

sumed at each sitting.According to its website, thealcohol in Snake Venom isvery strong but the beer still

tastes like a beer rather than aspirit. [www.azcentral.com](Its also around $85 a bottle, soI wont be picking up a 6-packsoon.)Finally, there must be a betterway! The newest beauty-treat-ment rage in China according toChinese media is the firefacial, in which alcohol and asecret elixir are daubed on theface and set ablaze for a fewseconds, then extinguished.According to ancient Chinesemedicine, this will burn offdull skin and also alleviatethe common cold and reduceobesity. [Inquisitr.com] Comeon, baby, light my fire....

Restoring my faith in humanity(a little): a friend of mine losthis wallet that contained,

besides important papers anddocuments, around $1,000 incash! (Yeah, I know; I know.)Anyhow, I ran into him severaldays later shopping (no, I didnthurt him), asked about the wal-let. Not only did someone find

it, the person turned it in, con-tents intact!

I used to ask why most hot dogscame in packages of ten while

buns/rolls came in eights (andsometimes vice-versa). Now,not only can one readily findroll packages of eight, butHannaford sells packages ofsix! Perfect match with some ofthe hot dogs I buy! Woo-hoo!Life is good. (It doesnt take

much to thrill me.)On the other hand, I was recent-ly shopping (basically my sociallife thats where I see people),and when I turned around, mycart was gone, replaced byanother. After realizing what

probably happened, I stayed inplace, and sure enough, a fewminutes later an embarrassedwoman came back to make theexchange. I lead an exciting life, dont I?

The latest poll average (10/22)shows Congressional approvalat around 8.4 percent (andtheyre probably thinking, Sowhat?). In Washington,

between the likes of Hemorr-Reid and John Boner, we thepeople are doomed! These peo-

ple have forgotten who they rep-resent and work for (and it isntthe corporations). (I take fullresponsibility for the previouscomments please dont blamethe publisher. Blame him for therain and snow... just sayin.)

Gotta tell you; I was hoping andpraying that maybe this time.....Yes, it was frozen pizza, but itwas Mystic Pizza! I dontremember much about themovie, but I so wanted to tryMystic Pizza when I saw it, andnow was my chance. Sad to sayit was still frozen pizza.

I guess KFC isnt as good asGeneral Tsos chicken becauseThe Colonel is outranked. Ofcourse, maybe the generalschicken isnt really that good at

all; maybe the good generalwanted to hide, so the followingvariations also appear out there:theres General Gao, GeneralTau (Greek army?), GeneralTao, General Tsao, GeneralTong, General Tang, GeneralCho, General Chau, andGeneral Chow. Of course, per-haps imitation is the sincerestform of flattery.... (Me? I gounder the name of General

    Nuisance.)

Presumably you all know what Imean, but theres a momentmost of us share coming up on atraffic signal. Usually, theres

plenty of time to slow down if itturns yellow or keep going if itdoesnt. But, theres thatmoment when youre closing inand it turns yellow - you arefaced with a split-second deci-sion whether to stop or keepgoing. So far, I have chosenwrong once, sliding somewhatsideways when I chose to stop.Lets be careful out there.

Maybe my call is important. I

recently got hit with a late feeand interest charge on a creditcard I have (over $50). My cred-it is important to me, so I try tokeep up. As of late, there have

been a couple I have forgottento pay (they got lost in the blackhole on my desk). When I foundit, I was a couple of days late. When I called, the person notedI have been a valued customerfor 37 years, and reversed thecharges!

Finally, allow me to be the firstto wish you a MerryChrismahanukwanzakah (for2014)! As celebrations of suchholidays keep getting earlierand earlier (called Holidaycreep), you really cant fault

    me.Later.

Were feeling a bit like Sisyphusthese days. Every four weekswe start from scratch by pushingthat boulder up the mountainagain, only to return to the baseand begin again after eachchemotherapy treatment.During the weeks after eachtreatment our hikes get longerand more arduous, and Atticusdoes well with them, but he letsme know what he needs and inthe week following the injectionof poison whose job is to takeon a greater poison; hes simplytired.

Thats okay. Its what I expect-

ed, and I think the treatments asa whole are going as well as wecould have expected. I knewwhen the first hint of cancerarose that we had to get rid ofthe toe, then when the tests

biopsies following the amputa-tion showed clean margins I waswell aware there was a chancecancer could come back again.

I did my research; trustedRachael Kleidon, our veterinari-an and friend, for her input;talked it over with friends, butin the end it was my decision. Iknew wed be giving up a solidsix months of hiking, includingthe best months of the year on

the trails. I also knew, however, that Im no fan of bullies andcancer is the ultimate bully. So

the decision ended up being aneasy one. Instead of hoping itstayed away, praying Atticuswould always be safe, butalways fearing its reappearance, and then being forced to playcatch up if and when the bullycame knocking again, we faced

jumped into the fire. Yes,Atticus is the one receives theinjections in one his front legsevery four weeks, but we faceeverything as a we, includingthis dance with cancer.

Atticus is so comfortable hefalls asleep during the treat-ments, and I am just as comfort-able. Over the handful of daysfollowing each treatment, wetake our time, just hang outtogether in the yard, and we nap.We do that a lot. After the mostrecent chemotherapy treatment,I was glad Atticus wanted to gofor a walk. That hasnt been thecase recently on chemo or post-chemo days. We did our usual1.4 mile loop that used to benothing more than an after-thought, but on that day, we

poked slowly along, and it tookus close to an hour. But still, wewere out there, and I was grate-ful for that.

Another thing to be grateful foris as of late Atticus's appetite isbetter, and weve made itthrough the nights without inci-dent. No diarrhea. No vomiting. All good signs.

I take note of such things, but Idont fixate or obsess. Its a lotlike going on a winter hike herein the White Mountains. I planfor the worst, hope for the best.Either way, I am prepared forthe tough and the easy.

One of the side effects of thecancer I wasnt ready for is thatit seems that everyone who hashad a dog in his or her life who

has fought it has reached out tome. The messages are typicallyin one of two forms. People

either lost a dog to cancer, andthey are expecting that Atticuswill die as well. Or surgeryand/or chemotherapy was suc-cessful, and they deliver to me abeen there, done that cavaliermessage. Although they meanwell, I'm not a big fan of eitherand tend to ignore the messen-gers and what they are saying.

During the summer of 2005,when Atticus and I hiked theforty-eight four thousand foot

peaks in eleven weeks, we wereonly about a quarter of the waythrough the list on a day whenwe were on our most ambitioushike of the summer up to that

point. Wed been over Northand South Twin and were rest-ing at Galehead Hut beforemaking the short ascent up themountain with the same name. There was a large group ofwomen hiking together, andtheyd been at it a long time. One of them had two dogs withher. I was so happy Atticus andI had accomplished what we hadand eager for the adventures ofthe rest of the summer when thisone particular woman talkedabout her hikes and the quest wewere on, she seemed bored and

her exact words were: Beenthere, done that.

Walking down the trail thatafternoon, just Atticus and meonce again, I thought of herwords and decided I wouldnever take that approach withanyone, no matter how manymountains Atticus and I endedup climbing. We all have ourown reasons for climbingmountains, and I do my best toapproach every other hiker, especially new ones, with asense of respect and reverencefor their personal journey. Inour own life, I tend to approacheach peak with reverence and

respect, not to mention a senseof wonder.

Well, this dance with cancer isthe same way for me. We didntchoose cancer. It chose us.

Nevertheless I looked upon it asa new adventure. There weregifts to be discovered along theway that would be revealed onlyto us. I didnt want to belong toany support groups. I didntwant to hear that the sky isfalling or that we had nothing toworry about. Cancer andchemotherapy may not be thesame as climbing a mountain inthe sense that its not much funat any time throughout the

process, but to me it represents apersonal experience and theauthenticity helps shape us.What we make of it, what wetake from it, becomes part ofour story and part of who weare. I don't want that devaluedin any way.

Considering all we've beenthrough, am I happy with thedecision to have chemotherapy Imade?

Happy wouldnt be the rightword. I am convinced, however, that I made the correct decision.I'm also thrilled that we stuckwith Rachael giving the treat-ments at North Country AnimalHospital even though it's some-thing they (and she) have onlydone there once before (for astaff member's dog). I went withmy heart, knowing Rachaelunderstands the relationshipAtticus and I share and becauseshe allows me to be with himthroughout all the treatments. That wouldnt have been thecase if we had gone to someexpert in a more sterile facilityin Portland, Portsmouth, orBoston. Not only would theynot allow me to sit with himthrough the chemotherapy treat-ments, they wouldnt haveallowed me to be with him dur-

ing the surgery and the recovery. It may not be the way other peo-ple would have done it, but its

been the path I chose, and itsnow the journey he and I are on.And to paraphrase MayaAngelou, We wouldnt takenothing for our journey now.

If Atticus has a weakness, it'swhen we are away from eachother. I never taught him how todo that and like all good hiking

partners; we go through thickand thin together. His sleepingthrough a treatment shows howat ease he is, how this is butanother mountain for us toclimb, and how we are exactlywhere we are supposed to be.Yes, we deal with stretcheswhere he lacks energy and aremissing out on many of thehikes we planned on, but on thiscurrent journey we are very nearthe views at the top. And whenall is said and done, and thechemotherapy is a thing of the

past, we wont have to worrythat bully coming back into ourlives.

This is our journey, our moun-tain, our life, and were writingthe story we wish to live in. I

believe that when we face a fearand eat the fear, it allows us tomake strengths out of our weak-nesses and give us couragewhere once we only had fear.Do this with someone you loveand its all the more special and all the more powerful.

Hello friends of nature and wel-come to this weeks edition of

    Nature Tracks...

    MUZZLELOADERSEASON STARTED

    NOVEMBER 2nd

    OPENING DAY FORREGULAR FIREARMS

    DEER SEASON IS NOVEM-BER 13th

Opening day for NewHampshires regular firearmsdeer season is November 13,2013, a date anticipated withgreat enthusiasm by the states60,000 deer hunters. The seasonruns through December 8 inmost of the state, except inWildlife Management Unit(WMU) A in northern NewHampshire, where it closesDecember 1 (changes in seasonlength remain in place inWildlife Management Unit A as

part of an effort to improve thebuck age-structure of the north-ern deer herd). The states popu-lar muzzleloader deer seasongets underway on November 2statewide and runs through

    November 12.

"For many New Englanders, thefirearms deer season is a tradi-tional opportunity to get togeth-er with family and friends, enjoy our bountiful resourcesand put meat in the freezer

before winter," said KentGustafson, Wildlife ProgramsSupervisor for the NewHampshire Fish and GameDepartment.

New Hampshire's archery deerseason began September 15. Asof October 20, 2013, a total of2,518 deer had been taken byarchers, an increase of 30% overthe 2012 total at this point in theseason. According to Fish andGame Deer Project Leader DanBergeron, the harvest remainsup significantly from 2009 and

2010, when the Septemberarchery season was bucks only, and is the highest in the last nineyears. Reported registrations inmost counties have increasedtoward or surpassed 2007 lev-els, when the states secondhighest total deer kill occurred.

"The increase at this point in theseason is likely the result of themild winter in 2012-13 andfavorable hunting conditions,"said Bergeron. "The increaseddeer kill is likely to continuethroughout the archery, youth, muzzleloader and regularfirearm seasons as a result ofhigher deer survival and recruit-ment following two of themildest winters on record dur-

ing 2011-12 and 2012-13. Foodabundance seems to be averagethis fall, with reports of certaincrops being locally abundant."

For a comparison by county(based on where deer were reg-istered, not necessarily whereharvested), visithttp://www.huntnh.com/Hunting/deer_hunt_take_October.htm.

Deer hunters can find WildlifeManagement Unit and season-specific either-sex day regula-tions in the N.H. Hunting andTrapping Digest, available athttp://www.huntnh.com/pubs/hunting.html or from any agentwhen you buy your license.

Hunting licenses can be pur-chased online athttp://www.huntnh.com, fromlicense agents statewide, or atthe N.H. Fish and GameDepartment in Concord. The

basic N.H. hunting license costs$22 for residents and $103 fornonresidents, plus a $2.50wildlife habitat fee. Hunters age

15 and younger do not need alicense, but do require permitsfor some species, such as turkeyand bear, and must be accompa-nied by a properly licensed adultat least 18 years of age.

On Sunday, October 27th justafter noon, the Northcountry

News received the followingstatement that I would like toshare with our readers.

    People may have most likely

heard or read about this by now,but I think it important to sharethis statement with our readers.

Today, District 1 ExecutiveCouncilor and Grafton CountyCommissioner Raymond S.

    Burton released the followingofficial statement.

It is with a heavy heart that Iinform you that my cancer hasreturned. After several days inand out of the hospital I will beheading home to Bath, New

Hampshire to rest. Due to thisrecent health development Iwish to inform my intention notto seek re-election to the postsof Executive Councilor andGrafton County Commission.

Councilor Burton served for 4decades and has served over250,000 constituents spanning

from the lakes region to theCanadian border.

Even though I will not be seek-ing another term for publicoffice, I will fulfill my duties intrusted in me. My office isalways willing to assist the con-

stituents of Grafton County andExecutive Council District 1.

I wish to thank my fellow resi-dents of New Hampshire for giv-ing me the privilege to servethem. In addition I thank my fel-low Councilors and theGovernors I proudly served

with. I would also like to thankthe 350 directors and commis-sioners I had the honor to workwith over my years of public

service. All decisions and mat-ters addressed were always inthe best intention to see our

state succeed and I am honoredto have been allowed to serveand work to make a difference

    for the Granite State.

    End of Statement~

Knowing I am not a very polit-ical person, Ray and I always

got along, always spoke whenwe saw each other, and I wasalways able to tell him whether

I agreed or disagreed with hispolitical ideas and thoughts -

and that was always fine withhim.

This is the message I left on hisFacebook page.

Ray, you know me - not much ofa political person, but I am cer-tainly honored to know you, andto have had the opportunity to

print many of the pictures andstories you sent us in our pagesof the Northcountry News overthe years. I think I can say with-out any doubt, that no one willbe able to replace the time andeffort you put in to the northcountry of NH. There are manywho talk the talk, but never walkthe walk, but you always didboth. Thank you for your many

years of service to the northcountry.

    Nobody Asked,Just My Opinion!- BEF

I recently obtained RolandBixbys new and great, 27thBook, containing the fascinatingHistory, of the old Charlestondistrict of Warren, which was athriving community, till it wasexceptionally Hit Hard by theSpotted Fever Plague. The Townwas located behind LakeTarletons, which was also athriving summer resort and

probablyyio doubt, was an assetto these Charleston residents, looking for work. The Town

slowly fell apart and left, afterit survived the Plague and eventhe cemetery could not be found

    for years.

Roland Bixby offered a $300gift to anyone, who could findthe old cemetery. I personallyalong with my sons searched thearea to no avail. But Roland for

years has searched and nevergave upland finally, he should

be proud, to say, He has found

the old cemetery. He has beenbusy questioning several seniorswho remember participating in

funerals, and laying flowers, yearly at its grave sites, and withtheir directions, continued his

search and with a tool called a

pipe founder, He is satisfied thathe at If ast has found, the oldcemetery, and The Church and

school location. Many farmremnants can still be found, including old orchards.

How many of todays residents, have passed by the Lake Tarletonarea and even spent time fishingor boating and have never evenknown about Charleston? Howthese early Pioneers lived andendured lifes hardship.

I found this book so interesting;I could not put it down, till Icontinued with Rolands news.

Like Rolands Book on Indians(Behold the White Man

Cometh) in this area, I found it,one of the best, and informative.

Being one who has IndianRoots, and have worked foryears with Indian groups, I alsofound his book to contain true

facts, good and bad, which isvery rare, these days.

I hope you will go out and pur-chase Rolands book calledThe Quest at Rest Hopefullythe Historical Society andTown Stores will be helping tocirculate! Warren andWentworth are fortunate tohave its own Historian, soactive, in our towns History,

Reporting unknown yearsbefore us! Keep up the goodwork Roland!

    Inspiring Words for You!

Dear Friends, 1 Thessalonians 5:17tells us to pray unceasingly. I don't know ifyou have noticed yet, but there surely is a lotto pray about! And that brings me to thesequestions. Do you pray? Do you feel the needto pray? Do you think God hears yourprayers? And the answer to all that is adefinite YES! He hears everyone. But since Heis the Alpha and Omega, He alone knows youranswer and when to give it. We have to trustin Him, that He knows what is best. His timingIS perfect. There are many of us that canattest to the fact that sometimes we havebeen glad He did not give us what we wanted. But what we needed. Just come to the Fatherin prayer and thanksgiving. Trust and hope inHim. I promise you, He will not let you down.God bless you all.

Tech Tips, Talk & AdviceFor Your Computer

    [email protected]

There is another threat out therefor computer users, it is calledransom ware. That is where ahacker will install a program onyour computer that will render ituseless until you purchase amoney pak from $100 to $300to get access to the files on yourcomputer. The latest threat iscalled Cryptolocker. Here ismore information about thisthreat thanks to Windows

    Secrets by Susan Bradley;

Online attackers are usingencryption to lock up our filesand demand a ransom andAV software probably won't

protect you. Here are ways todefend yourself fromCryptoLocker.

It's already hit many consumersand small businesses. CalledCryptoLocker, this infectionshows up in two ways. First,

you see a red banner (see Figure1) on your computer system, warning that your files are nowencrypted and if you sendmoney to a given email address, access to your files will berestored to you.

    CryptoLocker warning

Figure 1. CryptoLocker is notmaking idle threats.

The other sign you've been hit:you can no longer open Officefiles, database files, and mostother common documents onyour system. When you try to doso, you get another warning, such as "Excel cannot open thefile [filename] because the fileformat or file extension is notvalid," as stated on a TechNet

MS Excel Support Team blog.As noted in a Reddit comment,CryptoLocker goes after dozensof file types such as .doc, .xls,.ppt, .pst, .dwg, .rtf, .dbf, .psd,.raw, and .pdf.

CryptoLocker attacks typical-ly come in three ways:

    1) Via an email attachment. Forexample, you receive an emailfrom a shipping company youdo business with. Attached tothe email is a .zip file. Openingthe attachment launches a virusthat finds and encrypts all filesyou have access to includingthose located on any attacheddrives or mapped network

    drives.

    2) You browse a malicious web-site that exploits vulnerabilitiesin an out-of-date version ofJava.

    3) Most recently, you're trickedinto downloading a maliciousvideo driver or codec file.

There are no patches to undoCryptoLocker and, as yet, there's no clean-up tool theonly sure way to get your files

back is to restore them from abackup.

Some users have paid the ran-som and, surprisingly, weregiven the keys to their data.(Not completely surprising;returning encrypted files to theirowners might encourage othersto pay the ransom.) This is,obviously, a risky option. But ifit's the only way you might getyour data restored, use a prepaiddebit card not your personalcredit card.

In this case, your best defense isprevention. Keep in mind thatantivirus software probablywon't prevent a CryptoLocker

infection. In every case I'maware of, the PC owner had anup-to-date AV applicationinstalled. Moreover, runningWindows without admin rightsdoes not stop or limit this virus. It uses social engineering tech-niques and a good bit of fear, uncertainty, and doubt totrick users into clicking a mali-cious download or opening a

    bogus attachment.

    Your best prevention is two-fold:

    1) Basic method: Ensure youkeep complete and recent back-ups of your system. Making animage backup once or twice ayear isn't much protection.Given the size of today's harddrives on standalone PCs, anexternal USB hard drive is still

your best backup option. A 1TBdrive is relatively cheap; youcan get 3TB drives for underU.S. $200.

Small businesses with net-worked PCs should have auto-mated workstation backupsenabled, in addition to server

backups. At my office, I useBackup Box by Gramps'Windows Storage Server 2008R2 Essentials (site). It lets me

join the backup server to myoffice domain and back up allworkstations. I run the backupsduring the day, while others inthe office are using theirmachines and I've had nocomplaints of noticeable dropsin workstation performance.

As mentioned, make sure youdo regular backups of all yourdata files that means your pic-tures, documents and financialdata files backup everythingthat is important to you just incase you do get the virus you donot have to pay the $300.00 ran-som all you have to do is reloadyour computer and restore you

    backed up files.

I will be talking more about thisvirus in the next article if youhave any questions please callme at (603)747-2201 or email

    [email protected] , until next

    time have a safe computingexperience.
