1 Memoirs of J . Eben Taylor (father of Harold Taylor) born Kettering 1850 - went to P u l l e r Baptist Sunday School. Father worked for E l l i s & Everard at Isham Station. Moved to Burton Latimer & went to Endowed School (describes masters and teaching). Started shoe trade at age 11. Apprenticed to Wm. Seal as shoemaker but f a i l e d to learn much. Transferred to Mr. Sharp. Obtained work at Woodford ironstone works, walking k miles there & k miles back. Had to marry Hannah Treadgold who died a f t e r b i r t h of c h i l d . Did furnace work at nights. Stayed away from work at Burton Feast and was sacked. Got work at a new p i t at Woodford. Uncomfortable lodgings. Got better lodgings at Mrs. Owen's, member of the Baptist Chapel. Went to prayer meetings and cottage meetings. Married Naomi Daniels a f t e r she had nursed him through an i l l n e s s . Started s t i t c h i n g shoes with brother & brother­in-law and sang songs & played jokes on v i s i t o r s . Patching shoes and s o l i n g them. Memories of h i s youth from age 11 - chapel choir and more jokes - learned to play instruments and to dance. Playing music at public houses and outside houses at Christmas time. Played concertina solo & comic singing. At l a s t God inspired him to stop drinking & join a B i b l e Class. Started c o l l e c t i n g garden rents & pew rents. Describes chapel ministers. His children and the e f f i c a c y of Potters Asthma Powder. Pencil manuscript, written in November 1908.
