Figure 1.1 Site Location Plan

This report describes a Drainage Strategy which has been prepared by Morph Structures. The report will

support a planning application for temporary classrooms cabins at the former Royal Mail sorting offi ce,

Northampton. The benefi t of this report is limited to our instructing client.

The former Royal Mail sorting offi ce is located on Barrack Road, Northampton, as shown in Figure 1.1 below.

IntroductionIt is proposed that the former Royal Mail sorting offi ce is redeveloped into Northampton International

Academy. As part of this redevelopment, temporary classroom cabins are required to accommodate the

fi rst year intake. The temporary cabins are to be located across three sites as follows:

Northampton International Academy, 55 Barrack Road, Northampton, NN1 1AA

Castle Academy, St George’s Street, Northampton, NN1 2TR

NBA Gateway Centre, Mill Road, Northampton, NN2 6AX

The western block will comprise Year 7 cabins, a staff / admin cabin and a temporary hall. The southern

block will accommodate the Reception class.

2.1 IntroductionA Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) has been prepared by SMP Consulting Engineers to support a planning

application for the full permanent works of the proposed school, SMP report reference 6238-1-Rev B

dated 12th June 2014, planning application number NCC app no: 14/00039/CCDFUL. The FRA also detailed

the proposed drainage strategy for the full redevelopment.

2.2 Existing DrainageThere is a 900mm x 600mm combined sewer located to the west of the site and 225mm diameter foul

and surface water sewers located to the north of the site, as shown on the plan enclosed in Appendix B

obtained from the SMP FRA report.

All surface water from the existing site drains to a combined sewer located to the west of the site. Details

of the existing on-site drainage are shown on the topographical and utility surveys enclosed in Appendix

C and Appendix D.

2.3 Proposed Surface Water Drainage StrategyIt is proposed that surface water runoff from the full permanent works of the new school will discharge

to the existing combined sewer located to the west of the site. Surface water runoff for the permanent

works will be limited to a rate of 76 l/s as specifi ed by Anglian Water.

To be consistent with the drainage proposals for the full permanent works, surface water runoff from the

temporary classroom cabins will also discharge to the existing combined sewer located to the west of

the site.

3.1 Surface WaterThe locations of the two blocks of temporary cabins are currently areas of hard-standing. Therefore, the

impermeable area will not increase as a result of the temporary cabins. The topographical and utility

survey showing the existing surface water on-site drainage is enclosed within Appendix D.

Surface water from both blocks of temporary cabins will drain to the nearest existing available drains

located on the site. These existing surface water drains ultimately discharge to the combined sewer

located to the west of the site. This drainage strategy is consistent with the strategy detailed within the

FRA for the full permanent works.

Surface water drainage of the full redevelopment of the site will be carried out in line with the approved FRA.

3.2 Foul WaterThe topographical and utility survey showing the existing foul water on-site drainage is enclosed within

Appendix D.

Foul water from both blocks of temporary cabins will drain to the nearest existing available drains located

on the site. These existing foul water drains ultimately discharge to the combined sewer located to the

west of the site. This drainage strategy is consistent with the strategy detailed within the FRA for the full
