5/35 MILE HTKTNG CLUB

The western Michigan Chapter ofthe NCTA is promoting a 5 to 35mile hike and we made the of-ficial start date for January I1936.

This is for NCTA members onlyand you have to hike on thedesignated North Country Trail.

To qualLfy, you hike 5 milesthe first hike, report whichsection of trail you hiked andhave signed by one witness. The next time out, you go forI0, then 15, 20, 25, 30 andfinish on a 35 miler, each tobe done in one day.

A carrying card and certificatewill be awarded and pins willbe available to purchase.

On January L2, 1936, we hadthree that completed the first5 miles on sno\^rshoes: ArtHo1land, Dewey Wcmba and JackCooley.

On February 8, 1986, we hadfive that hiked on crustedsno!, trail and they were: JimWarmels, Rr;th Sack, DarleneSynder, Bernice Baron andBlake Burgess

It should be an exciting groupproject.

AND AI,L R.EADERS

John, I'II write a few ideasand inaybe it can go with thematerial you have.

I will .chair the hike andwould be pleased to haveLawrence Monty Montgomery heI-ping, but I haven't written tohim-

I think roe need a good exci.a-ting name for the hike andshould decide at the May mee-ting. Invite anyone to submitnames.

Start last Saturday in .:u1yand end on Labor Day in theyear of 1990.

Ask for vclunteers as sectionIeaders to take charge of 2OOrnile sections and they are toget leaders to handle 30 mrleseach within their area.

I am going to take fromMunising to the t,takinaw Bridgeand plan on hiking the wholedistance.

I believe it is too early toask for news coverage andother publicity from outs idesectors, at least that is myopinion from the letters thatI wrote to 3 persons-

An average of 15 miles per daymcre or less, depending uponthe cut-cff point

Give a rvallet carrying card toevery hiker for any distance;a certificate to members onlyand buttons, also patches thathikers can buy. Maybe blueand white caps too.

WiII need support teams to

transport hikers if necessary, especially lccal dignitaries, that want to ride out a fewmiles and hike into the villagetcrvrn , or c ity -

lhe hike can be done and thehike will be done Should bea great prornotional projeetand I thinl< that we can getIO0 neh, members from each statto join the NCTA.

John, 1 think that this hikewill pull all the local clubstogether and we all should bebetter friends forever
