-ONLY run machine outdoors and away from air intakes. -NEVER run machine inside homes, garages, sheds, or other semi-enclosed spaces. These spaces can trap poisonous gases, EVEN IF you run a fan or open doors and windows. If you start to feel sick, dizzy. or weak while using this machine, shut it off and get to fresh air RIGHT AWAY. See a doctor. You may have carbon monoxide poisoning.

Hookup must comply with the Federal and Local jurisdictions for Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) and Natural Gas (NG), ALWAYS have a qualified technician complete the LPG/NG hookup. Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG)

This generator will not work with 20-lbs gas cylinders used in gas grit Is and recreational equipment, or 40-lbs gas cylinders used in forklifts and trictors.

A 100-lbs LPG gas cylinder is the minimum fuel tank size for this produ c t. Some installations may require tanks larger than 100-lbs as a result of low su varrounding air temperature and other appliances drawing fuel from the same tank.

LPG Fuel Inlet Requirements: This product is designed to operate oni LPG within al specific gas pressure range_ The LPG gas pressure range is 7" to 11" 4=4 water colurr-ii This product does not include a pressure-reducing regulator for LPG. gas cylinders produce gas pressure in excess of 11" water column. Natural Gas (NG)

NG Fuel Inlet Requirements: This product is designed to operate on NG within specific gas pressure range. The gas pressure range is 4 to 6 ounces per square E. I-) This product does not include a pressure-reducing regulator for NG _ Your system pressure may be exceed the generator's pressure rating of 4 to 6 ou inces, and will permanently damage this product and void the warranty. Minimum NG gas flow requirement: 3.25 CFM. Always use a certified gas technician for installation of the fuel system.

Switching from LP or NG to gasoline: 1. Disconnect all loads to generator. 2. Turn the gas line valve to ON position. 3. Flip the fuel selection switch to the GASOLINE

position. Switching from gasoline to LP or NG: 1. Disconnect all loads to generator. 2. Make sure LP or NG fuel is being supplied. 3. Flip the fuel selection switch to the LP/NG

position. 4. Momentary sputtering is common. 5. Turn gasoline line valve to OFF position. Reference 16 - Hour Meter. The control panel

includes an hour meter to monitor engine run time. The hour meter will not work if the 120 volt, 20 amp circuit breaker is OFF (Reference 13).

Reference 17 - Oil Drain Area. This product was designed with a large window in the base directly below the engine oil drain plug (Reference 19). The large window facilitates a quick and clean process to change engine oil.

Reference 18 - Demand Regulator Assembly. Controls the flow of LP or NG gas into the engine carburetor.

Reference 19 - Oil Drain Plug. Refer to your Honda engine manual for oil change recommendations.

Reference 20 - Oil level Dip Stick. Refer to your Honda engine manual for proper oil level recommendations. Low Oil Shutdown. The Honda engine is protected against damage resulting from low oil level. As the oil falls below the safe level, the engine automatically shuts off (the engine stop switch remains in the on position). The engine will not start until the oil is refilled to above the safe level.

Reference 21 - Starting/ Stopping instructions. Reference 22 - Engine Oil Fill Port. Remove the

oil fill cap to add engine oil Reference 23 - Engine Start/Stop Key Switch.

The engine key switch is located on the front of the engine. Always locate this switch and be familiar with its location before operating the generator.

Reference 24 - Engine Choke Lever. Used during cold starts. Refer to the starting/stopping instructions and the Honda engine manual for usage.

Reference 25 - Vibration Isolation Mounts. The engine and generator head is mounted on rubber cylinders that absorb most of the engine vibration. This feature eliminates the tendency of the machine to "walk" which is common with engine powered equipment.

Reference 26 - Engine Exhaust Muffler. The muffler is designed to reduce engine noise. Keep debris and combustible materials away from the muffler. The muffler contains a spark arrester. Refer to the Honda engine owner's manual for spark arrester maintenance.

Reference 27 - Engine Oil Filter. Replace the oil filter at each oil change. Replace with Honda genuine replacement parts

Reference 28 - Generator Head. The electricity producing part of the generator. The neutral line of the generator is mechanically grounded to the frame.

Reference 29 - Gas Line Valve. The fuel tank has an ON-OFF valve mounted underneath Always keep this valve closed (OFF) when the generator is not in use.

Before starting your generator, thoroughly study the instructions and cautions in this manual to assure you are fully acquainted with the operation of all components of this generator. Proper preparation, operation and maintenance will result in operator safety, best performance and long life of the generator. For detailed engine operation and maintenance always refer to the Honda engine owner's manual furnished with the generator (Honda refers to the 20 HP engine as a GX620).

Safety precautions are essential when operating this generator. Respectful and cautious operation will considerably lessen the possibilities of a personal injury. This manual will warn of specific personal injury potential, and these will be designated by the symbol.

WARNING This generator is equipped with a grounding post, located on the control panel for your protection. Always complete the grounding path from the generator to a copper pipe/rod that is driven into moist earth, to prevent electrical shock.

ALWAYS use electrical cords that are in good condition. Worn, bare, frayed or otherwise damaged cords can cause electric shock.

NEVER operate the generator, or handle any electrical equipment while standing in water, while barefoot, while hands are wet or while in the rain or snow. Electric shock may result.

ALWAYS use a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) in damp or highly electrical conductive areas and on construction job-sites to prevent electric shock.

ALWAYS remove the spark plug or spark plug wire before working on the engine or generator, to prevent accidental starting.

ALWAYS provide adequate ventilation. Do ' not operate generator in any enclosed or narrow space. Engines consume oxygen and give off deadly carbon monoxide poisonous gas. Improper ventilation will cause damage to generator and possible injury to people.

NEVER touch hot muffler, hot exhaust manifold or engine cooling fins.

ALWAYS remove all oil or gasoline deposits and accumulated dirt from generator and immediate area. Keep generator head and engine clean.

NEVER operate the generator under the following conditions:

A. Excessive change in engine speed, slow or fast. B. Overheating in load connecting devices. C. Sparking or arcs from generator. D. Loss of electrical output E. Damaged receptacles F. Engine misfire G. Excessive vibration. H. Enclosed compartments, or confined areas. I. Flame or smoke. J. Rain, snow or wet conditions. K. Operator non-attendance.

WARNING Hookup must comply with the Federal and Local jurisdiction of Liquid Petroleum (LP) and Natural Gas (NG). ALWAYS have a qualified technician complete the LP/NG hookup. Improper installation can cause injury or death. LP/NG are lethal and explosive gases. If you smell gas, exit area immediately, if possible shut off the LP/NG supply Before you start engine, smell next to floor for gas, if you do smell gas:

• DO NOT start engine

• DO NOT light a match. • DO NOT flip on an electrical switch • Exit area immediately and call gas supplier or

fire department. Minimum flow range required: NG - 3.25 CFM, LPG - 9.33 LB/hr. Pressure Range: 4-6 ounces, OR 7-11 inches of water column. NEVER over pressurize.

WARNING Check fuel system on a regular basis. Look for signs of leaks, deterioration, chafed or spongy fuel hose, loose or missing fuel hose clamps, damaged fuel tank or a defective fuel shut-off valve. Correct any defects before operation.

WARNING Keep the fire extinguisher close by your generator and be familiar on how to use it. Consult your local fire department for correct extinguisher type.

INsii-ALgolON OUTDOORS: Choose an location where the

generator will not be exposed to rain, snow or direct sunlight. Position the generator on secure, level ground so it will not tip or slide down a hill. Place the generator so that the exhaust fumes will not be directed towards people

The installation site must be free from water, moisture, or dust. All electrical components should be protected from excessive moisture or the insulation system will deteriorate and result in grounding or shorting out the generating system.

Foreign matters, such as dust, dirt, sand, lint, or abrasive materials can cause damage to the generator head and engine if allowed into its cooling system.

NEVER install your generator inside confined areas. Inside installation can cause health hazards or death. Gasoline, Liquid Petroleum, and Natural Gas will produce varying amounts of carbon monoxide

DANGER Remember, exhaust fumes are deadly carbon monoxide gas, and must be vented to the outside where there are no people. Cooling air of sufficient amounts must be allowed to flow in and exhausted out to ensure proper cooling of the engine and generator head

It is important to determine the total electrical load before it is connected to the generator. The two major factors in determining the life of a generator head are heat build-up, caused by overloading the generator and corrosive contaminants that attack the wiring insulation. If the generator is overloaded, the wires become excessively hot and cause the insulation to break down, reducing its ability to resist corrosive

contaminants. Over time the effectiveness of the insulation is eliminated and a dead short can result

Always compare the generator nameplate data with that of the equipment to be used to ensure that watts, volts, amperage, and frequency requirements are suitable for operating equipment. The wattage listed on the equipment nameplate is its rated output. However, some equipment may require three to ten times more wattage than its rating on the nameplate, as the wattage is influenced by the equipment efficiency, power factor and starting system. NOTE: If wattage is not given on equipment nameplate, approximate wattage may be determined by multiplying nameplate voltage by nameplate amperage.

VOLTS X AMPS = WATTS Example: 120V X 5A = 600W

When connecting a resistive load such as incandescent lights, heaters or common electric power tools, a capacity of up to the generator full rated wattage output can be used.

When connecting a resistive-inductive load such as a fluorescent or mercury light, transformers or inductive coils, a capacity of up to 0.6 times the generators full rated output can be used.

Always allow the generator to reach operating speed before a load is applied.

STARTING ELECTRIC MOTORS

Electric motors require much more current (amps) to start than to run. Some motors, particularly low cost split-phase motors, are very hard to start and require 5 to 7 times more current to start than to run. Capacitor motors are easier to start and usually require 2 to 4 times as much current to start than to run. Repulsion Induction motors are the easiest to start and require 1 5 to 2.5 times as much to start than to run.

Most fractional motors take about the same amount of current to run them whether they are of Repulsion-Induction (RI), Capacitor (Cap), or Split-Phase (SP) type. The following chart shows the approximate current required to start and run various types and sizes of 120 volt 60 cycle electric motors under various conditions

The figures given above are for an average load such as a blower or fan. If the electric motor is

connected to a hard starting load such as an air compressor, it will require more starting current If it is connected to a light load or no load such as a power saw, it will require less starting current The exact requirement will also vary with the brand or design of the motor.

Generators respond to severe overloading differently than the power line. When overloaded, the engine is not able to supply enough power to bring the electric motor up to operating speed. The generator responds to the high initial starting current, but the engine speed drops sharply. The overload may stall the engine. If allowed. to operate at very low speeds, the electric motor starting winding will burn out in a short time. The generator head winding might also be damaged.

Running the generator under these conditions may result in damage to the generator stator as well as the motor windings. Because the heavy surge of current is required for only an instant, the generator will not be damaged if it can bring the motor up to speed in a few seconds. If difficulties in starting a motor are experienced, turn off all other electrical loads and if possible reduce the load on the electric motor.

EXTENSION CORDS

When electric power is to be provided to various loads at some distance from the generator, extension cords can be used. These cords should be sized to allow for distance in length and amperage so that the voltage drop between the set and point of use is held to a minimum.

Your generator has been thoroughly tested prior to shipment from the factory. A factory test report has been included with this manual. However, damage can occur during shipping, so be sure to check for damaged parts or loose or missing nuts and bolts. If the aforementioned problems occur, call Customer Service at 1-800-270-0810.

Load Block Adjustment - All Triple Fuel generators are factory pre-set to operate on LP vapor fuel. If the engine experiences difficulty starting on LP or Natural Gas, the load block may need adjustment.

To adjust the load block, loosen the lock nut, then turn the adjustment screw clockwise until resistance is felt. At this point the load block in completely shut-off. While LP gas or Natural Gas is being supplied to the generator, turn the ignition key to the start position and slowly turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise until the engine starts. Once the engine is running turn the adjustment screw very slowly to smooth out engine performance. Once the proper setting is achieved turn the brass lock nut to secure the adjustment screw. Depress the primer button when cold starting the engine.

GROUNDING - All units must be grounded. Drive a 3/4" or 1" copper pipe or rod into the ground close to the generator. The pipe/rod must penetrate moist earth. Connect an approved ground clamp to the pipe. Run a 10 Ga. wire from the clamp to the generator grounding post located on the rear of the generator head Do not connect to a water pipe or a ground used by a radio system.

CAUTION: The engine has been shipped without oil. Fill the crankcase with oil before trying to start. Low oil shut down prevents your generator from starting without sufficient oil.

OPERATING SPEED

The generator must be run at the correct speed in order to produce the proper electrical voltage and frequency. The speed of the engine was carefully adjusted at the factory so that the generator produces the proper voltage and frequency.

The output voltage should be checked to ensure the generator is working properly before connecting a load to the generator. Failure to do so could result in damage to equipment plugged into the unit and possible injury to the individual.

All engines have a tendency to slow down when a load is applied. When the electrical load is connected to the generator, the engine is more heavily loaded, and as a result the speed drops slightly. This slight

decrease in speed, together with the voltage drop within the generator itself, results in a slightly lower voltage when the generator is loaded to its full capacity than when it is running with no load The slight variation has no appreciable effect in the operation of motors, lights and most appliances. Electronic equipment and clocks will be affected if correct RPM is not maintained. See Load vs. Output chart.

Output voltage should periodically be checked to ensure continued proper operation of the generating plant and appliafices. It can be checked with a portable meter. Check frequency by using an electric clock with a sweep second hand. Timed against a wristwatch or a stopwatch, the clock should be correct within +1- 2 seconds per minute. Speed adjustments should be accomplished by qualified engine technicians.

BEFORE STARTING

1. Make sure the generator is positioned on firm level surface.

2. Check the crankcase for oil and maintain at a proper level.

3. Check fuel level and fill tank with fresh unleaded gasoline if necessary. Allow for gasoline expansion by never filling fuel tank completely to the top. Always wipe up and remove any spilled gasoline.

4. Make sure that the exhaust fumes are directed away from people.

Operating Instructions- Gasoline: 1. Disconnect all loads to generator. 2. Flip the fuel selector switch to GASOLINE

position. 3. Turn gas line valve to ON position. 4. For cold engine, move choke lever to full choke

position. For a warm engine, move choke lever to half choke or to RUN position.

5. Turn the key to the START position. 6. When engine starts, move choke lever to RUN

position. 7. Loads may now be connected to generator.

1. Disconnect all loads to generator. 2. Turn engine key to OFF position 3. Turn fuel line valve to OFF position. 4. The fuel kick-off solenoid automatically stops

the flow of LP or NG to the engine.

Switching from gasoline to LP or NG: 1. Disconnect all loads to generator. 2. Make sure LP or NG fuel is being supplied. 3. Flip the fuel selection switch to the "None"

position. The fuel conversion should take 1-2 seconds. See the STARTING section of this manual for further details.

4. Wait for the engine to begin sputtering. This indicates the engine is being starved of gasoline.

5. Flip the fuel selection switch to the LP/NG position. Turn gasoline line valve to OFF position.

The generator head is two pole, 3600 RPM, 60 Hz, brushless, revolving field with one sealed radial roller bearing. The rotor of the generator head is directly connected to the engine crankshaft and the stator is rigidly coupled to the engine casting via the generator head casting.

Exercising the Generator - The generator should be operated every four weeks. Warm unit up by starting the engine and letting it run for 10 to 15 minutes. This will dry out any moisture that has accumulated in the windings. If left, this moisture can cause corrosion in the winding. Frequent operation of the engine generator will also ensure that the set is operating properly should it be needed in an emergency.

Generator Maintenance - The generator head is brushless and maintenance free. Major service, including installation or replacement of parts should be performed only by a qualified electrical service technician. USE ONLY FACTORY APPROVED REPAIR PARTS. Obtain all factory parts from Customer Service at 1-800-270-0810.

A. Bearing - The bearing used in these generators is a heavy duty sealed ball bearing. They require no maintenance or lubrication.

B. Receptacles - Quality receptacles have been utilized. if a receptacle should become cracked or otherwise damaged, replace it. Using cracked or damaged receptacles can be both dangerous to the operator and destructive to the equipment.

Stand-by Operation If your generator is to be used as a standby

electric power source in case of utility failure, it must be installed by a licensed electrician and in compliance with all applicable state and local electrical codes. Also, local Fire Departments must be consulted concerning proper and safe handling procedures for gasoline. NEVER connect any generator to any existing electrical system without an isolating, UL approved transfer switch, installed by a licensed electrician.

SAFETY INFORMATION

• Understand the operation of all controls and learn how to stop the engine quickly in case of emergency. Make sure the operator receives adequate instruction before operating the equipment

• Do not allow children to operate the engine. Keep children and pets away from the area of operation.

• Your engine's exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide Do not run the engine without adequate ventilation, and never run the engine indoors.

• The engine and exhaust become very hotduring operation. Keep the engine at least 1 meter (3 feet) away from buildings and other equipment during operation. Keep flammable materials away, and do not place anything on the engine while it is running.

Improperly maintaining this engine, or failure to correct a problem before operation, can cause a malfunction in which you can be seriously hurt or killed.

Always perform a preoperation inspection before each operation, and correct any problem.

BEFORE OPERATION CHECKS

FEATURES

OIL ALERT® SYSTEM (applicable types) The Oil Alert® system is designed to prevent engine damage caused by an insufficient amount of oil in the crankcase. Before the oil level in the crankcase can fall below a safe limit, the Oil Alert® system will automatically stop the engine (the engine switch will remain in the ON position).

If the engine stops and will not restart, check the engine oil level (see page 7 ) before troubleshooting in other areas.

Fuel-cut Solenoid

The engine is equipped with a fuel-cut solenoid that allows fuel to flow to the carburetor main jet when the engine switch is in the ON or START position and stops the flow of fuel to the main jet when the engine switch is in the OFF position.

The engine must be connected to the battery to energize the fuel-cut solenoid, allowing the engine to run. If the battery is disconnected, fuel flow to the carburetor main jet will stop.

Oil Cooler (GX670)

The GX670 engine is equipped with an oil cooler to maintain the correct temperature.

IS YOUR ENGINE READY TO GO?

For your safety, and to maximize the service life of your equipment, it is very important to take a few moments before you operate the engine to check its condition. Be sure to take care of any problem you find, or have your servicing dealer correct it, before you operate the engine.

Before beginning your preoperation checks, be sure the engine is level and the engine switch is in the OFF position.

Always check the following items before you start the engine.

Check the General Condition of the Engine

1. Look around and underneath the engine for signs of oil or gasoline leaks.

2. Remove any excessive dirt or debris, especially around the muffler and recoil starter.

3. Look for signs of damage.

4. Check that all shields and covers are in place, and all nuts, bolts, and screws are tightened.

Check the Engine

1. Check the fuel level. Starting with a full tank will help to eliminate or reduce operating interruptions for refueling.

2. Check the engine oil level (see page 7 ). Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage.

The Oil Alert® system (applicable types) will automatically stop the engine before the oil level falls below safe limits. However, to avoid the inconvenience of an unexpected shutdown, always check the engine oil level before startup.

3. Check the air filter element (see page 9 ). A dirty air filter element will restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine performance.

4. Check the equipment powered by this engine.

Review the instructions provided with the equipment powered by this engine for any precautions and procedures that should be followed before engine startup.

Using the electric starter for more than 5 seconds at a time will overheat the starter motor and can damage it.

THE IMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE

Good maintenance is essential for safe, economical and trouble-free operation. It will also help reduce pollution.

A WARNING

Improper maintenance, or failure to correct a problem before operation, can cause a malfunction in which you can be seriously hurt or killed.

Always follow the inspection and maintenance recommendations and schedules in this owner's manual.

To help you properly care for your engine, the following pages include a maintenance schedule, routine inspection procedures, and simple maintenance procedures using basic hand tools. Other service tasks that are more difficult, or require special tools, are best handled by professionals and are normally performed by a Honda technician or other qualified mechanic.

The maintenance schedule applies to normal operating conditions. If you operate your engine under severe conditions, such as sustained high-load or high-temperature operation, or use in unusually wet or dusty conditions, consultyour servicing dealer for recommendations applicable to your individual needs and use.

Maintenance, replacement, or repair of the emission control devices and systems may be performed by any engine repair establishment or individual, using parts that are "certified" to EPA standards.

—Injury from moving parts. Do not run the engine unless instructed to do so.

• To reduce the possibility of fire or explosion, be careful when working around gasoline. Use only a nonflammable solvent, not gasoline, to clean parts. Keep cigarettes, sparks and flames away from all fuel related parts.

This engine is certified to operate on unleaded gasoline. Unleaded gasoline produces fewer engine and spark plug deposits and extends exhaust system life.

NOTICE

Fuel can damage paint and some types of plastic. Be careful not to spill fuel when filling your fuel tank. Damage caused by spilled fuel is not covered under the Distributor's Limited Warranty.

Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or oil/gasoline mixture. Avoid getting dirt or water in the fuel tank.

Occasionally you may hear a light "spark knock" or "pinging" (metallic rapping noise) while operating under heavy loads. This is no cause for concern.

If spark knock or pinging occurs at a steady engine speed, under normal load, change brands of gasoline. If spark knock or pinging persists, see an authorized Honda servicing dealer.

NOTICE

Running the engine with persistent spark knock or pinging can cause engine damage.

Running the engine with persistent spark knock or pinging is considered misuse, and the Distributor's Limited Warranty does not cover parts damaged by misuse.

1. With the engine stopped and on a level surface, remove the fuel tank cap and check the fuel level. Refill the tank if the fuel level is low. Refer to the instructions provided with the equipment powered by this engine for refuelling.

Refuel in a well ventilated area before starting the engine. If the engine has been running, allow it to cool. Refuel carefully to avoid spilling fuel It may be necessary to lower the fuel level depending on operating conditions After refueling, tighten the fuel tank cap securely.

Never refuel the engine inside a building where gasoline fumes may reach flames or sparks. Keep gasoline away from appliance pilot lights, barbecues, electric appliances, power tools, etc.

Spilled fuel is not only a fire hazard, it causes environmental damage. Wipe up spills immediately.

For information regarding oxygenated fuels, please refer to page 16 .

ENGINE OIL

Oil is a major factor affecting performance and service life. Use 4-stroke automotive detergent oil.

Recommended Oil SAE Viscosity Grades

Use 4-stroke motor oil that meets or exceeds the requirements for API service classification SJ, SL, or equivalent. Always check the API service label on the oil container to be sure it includes the letters SJ, SL, or equivalent.

SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general use. Other viscosities shown in the chart may be used when the average temperature in your area is within the indicated range.

Oil Level Check

Check the engine oil level with the engine stopped and in a level position.

1. GX670 ONLY: Start the engine and let it idle for 1 or 2 minutes. Stop the engine and wait for 2 or 3 minutes.

2. Remove the dipstick and wipe it clean.

3. Fully insert the dipstick, then remove it to check the oil level.

4. If the oil level is low, remove the oil filler cap, and fill to the upper limit mark on the dipstick with the recommended oil.

5. Reinstall the dipstick and filler cap.

NOTICE

Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage

The Oil Alerts system (applicable types) will automatically stop the engine before the oil level falls below the safe limit. However, to avoid the inconvenience of an unexpected shutdown, always check the engine oil level before startup.

Oil Change

Drain the used oil when the engine is warm. Warm oil drains quickly and completely

1. Place a suitable container below the engine to catch the used oil, then remove the filler cap, drain bolt and washer.

2. Allow the used oil to drain completely, then reinstall the drain bolt and new washer, and tighten the drain bolt securely.

Please dispose of used motor oil in a manner that is compatible with the environment. We suggest you take used oil in a sealed container to your local recycling center or service station for reclamation. Do not throw it in the trash, pour it on the ground, or down a drain.

3. With the engine in a level position, fill to the upper limit mark on the dipstick with the recommended oil.

NOTICE

Running the engine with a low oil level can cause engine damage.

The Oil Alert® system (applicable types) will automatically stop the engine before the oil level falls belowthe safe limit. However, to avoid the inconvenience of an unexpected shutdown, fill to the upper limit, and check the oil level regularly.

4. Reinstall the filler cap and dipstick securely.

1. Drain the engine oil, and retighten the drain bolt securely.

2. Remove the oil filter, and drain the oil into a suitable container. Dispose the used oil and filter in a manner compatible with the environment.

NOTICE

Use an oil filter socket, rather than a strap wrench, to avoid striking and damaging the oil pressure switch.

SEAL

3. Clean the filter mounting base, and coat the seal of the new oil filter with clean engine oil.

NOTICE

Use only a genuine Honda oil filter or a filter of equivalent quality specified for your model. Using the wrong filter, or a non-Honda filter which is not of equivalent quality, may cause engine damage.

4. Screw on the new oil filter by hand until the seal contacts the filter mounting base, then use an oil filter socket tool to tighten the filter an additional 7/8 turn.

Oil filter tightening torque: 22 N-m (2.2 kgf-rn , 16 Ibf•ft)

5. Refill the crankcase with the specified amount of the recommended oil (see page 7 )• Reinstall the oil filler cap and dipstick.

6. Start the engine, and check for leaks.

7. Stop the engine, and check the oil level as described on page 7 . If necessary, add oil to bring the oil level to the upper limit mark on the dipstick.

A dirty air cleaner will restrict air flow to the carburetor, reducing engine performance. If you operate the engine in very dusty areas, clean the air filter more often than specified in the MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE.

NOTICE

Operating the engine without an air filter, or with a damaged air filter, will allow dirt to enter the engine, causing rapid engine wear. This type of damage is not covered by the Distributor's Limited Warranty.

Inspection

Remove the air cleaner cover and inspect the filter elements. Clean or replace dirty filter elements. Always replace damaged filter elements.

Cleaning

Standard Type:

1. Release four latch tabs from the air cleaner cover, and remove the cover.

2. Remove the foam filter from the cover.

3. Remove the paper filter from the air cleaner case.

6. Wipe dirt from the inside of the air cleaner body and cover, using a moist rag. Be careful to prevent dirt from entering the air chamber that leads to the carburetor.

7. Place the foam air filter element in the air cleaner cover, then reinstall the paper air filter element and cover to the air cleaner case. Hook the four latch tabs securely.

Snorkel Type:

1. Remove the wing nut from the air cleaner cover, and remove the cover.

2. Remove the wing nut from the paper filter element.

3. Remove the paper filter element from the air cleaner case.

PAPER FILTER ELEMENT

4. Inspect the paper air filter element, and replace it if it is damaged. Always replace the paper air filter element at the scheduled interval (see page 6 ).

5. Clean the paper air filter element if it is to be reused.

Never try to brush off dirt, brushing will force dirt into the fibers. Replace the paper element if it is excessively dirty.

Foam air filter element: Clean in warm soapy water, rinse, and allow to dry thoroughly. Or clean in nonflammable solvent and allow to dry. Do not put oil on the foam element.

Tap the filter element several times on a hard surface to remove dirt, or blow compressed air [not exceeding 207 kPa (2 1 kg/cm2, 30 psi)] through the filter element from the inside. Never try to brush off dirt; brushing will force dirt into the fibers.

6. Wipe dirt from the inside of the air cleaner case and cover, using a moist rag. Be careful to prevent dirt from entering the air duct that leads to the carburetor.

7. Reinstall the paper air filter element. Tighten the air filter wing nut securely.

8. Reinstall the air cleaner cover, and tighten the cover wing nut securely.

2. If the fuel filter is found with excessive water accumulation or sediment, take the engine to your authorized Honda servicing dealer.

3. Inspect the spark plugs. Replace them if damaged, badly fouled, if the sealing washer is in poor condition, or if the electrode is worn.

4. Measure the spark plug electrode gaps with a wire-type feeler gauge. Correct the gap, if necessary, by carefully bending the side electrode. The gap should be: 0.70 0 80 mm (0.028-0.031 in)

The recommended spark plugs are the correct heat range for normal engine operating temperatures.

NOTICE

Incorrect spark plugs can cause engine damage.

For good performance, the spark plugs must be properly gapped and free of deposits.

1. Disconnect the spark plug caps, and remove any dirt from around the spark plug area.

2. Remove the spark plugs with a 13/16-inch spark plug wrench.

5. Install the spark plug carefully, by hand, to avoid cross-threading.

6. After the spark plug is seated, tighten with a 13/16 inch spark plug wrench to compress the sealing washer.

When installing a new spark plug, tighten 1/2 turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer.

When reinstalling the original spark plug, tighten 1/8 1/4 turn after the spark plug seats to compress the washer .

NOTICE

A loose spark plug can overheat and damage the engine. Overtightening the spark plug can damage the threads in the cylinder head.

7.Attach the spark plug caps to the spark plugs.

Your engine is not factory-equipped with a spark arrester. The spark arrester is optional part. In some areas, it is illegal to operate an engine without a spark arrester. Check local laws and regulations. A spark arrester is available from authorized Honda servicing dealers.

The spark arrester must be serviced every 100 hours to keep it functioning as designed

If the engine has been running, the muffler will be hot. Allow it to cool before servicing the spark arrester.

SIDE-MOUNT MUFFLER TYPE: Remove the 6 mm flange bolts from the muffler protector and remove the muffler protector. Remove the special screws from the spark arrester and remove the spark arrester from the muffler.

2 Use a brush to remove carbon deposits from the spark arrester screen. Be careful to avoid damaging the screen.

The spark arrester must be free of breaks and holes. Replace the spark arrester if it is damaged.

STORING YOUR ENGINE

Storage Preparation Proper storage preparation is essential for keeping your engine trouble-free and looking good. The following steps will help to keep rust and corrosion from impairing your engine's function and appearance, and will make the engine easier to start when you use it again.

Cleaning If the engine has been running, allow it to cool for at least half an hour before cleaning. Clean all exterior surfaces, touch up any damaged paint, and coat other areas that may rust with a light film of oil.

NOTICE

Using a garden hose or pressure washing equipment can force water into the air cleaner or muffler opening. Water in the air cleaner will soak the air filter, and water that passes through the air filter or muffler can enter the cylinder, causing damage.

Fuel Gasoline will oxidize and deteriorate in storage. Deteriorated gasoline will cause hard starting, and it leaves gum deposits that clog the fuel system. If the gasoline in your engine deteriorates during storage, you may need to have the carburetor, and other fuel system components, serviced or replaced.

The length of time that gasoline can be left in your fuel tank and carburetor without causing functional problems will vary with such factors as gasoline blend, your storage temperatures, and whether the fuel tank is partially or completely filled. The air in a partially filled fuel tank promotes fuel deterioration. Very warm storage temperatures accelerate fuel deterioration. Fuel problems may occur within a few months, or even less if the gasoline was not fresh when you filled the fuel tank.

Fuel system damage or engine performance problems resulting from neglected storage preparation are not covered under the Distributor's Limited Warranty.

You can extend fuel storage life by adding a gasoline stabilizer that is formulated for that purpose, or you can avoid fuel deterioration problems by draining the fuel tank and carburetor.

Adding a Gasoline Stabilizer to Extend Fuel Storage Life

When adding a gasoline stabilizer, fill the fuel tank with fresh gasoline. If only partially filled, air in the tank will promote fuel deterioration during storage. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling, be sure that it contains only fresh gasoline.

1. Add gasoline stabilizer following the manufacturer's instructions.

2. After adding a gasoline stabilizer, run the engine outdoors for 10 minutes to be sure that treated gasoline has replaced the untreated gasoline in the carburetor.

3. Stop the engine, and if the fuel tank is equipped with a fuel valve, move the fuel valve to the CLOSED or OFF position

Draining the Fuel Tank and Carburetor

1. Disconnect the fuel line to the engine, and drain the fuel tank into an approved gasoline container. If the fuel tank is equipped with a valve, turn the fuel valve to the OPEN or ON position to enable draining. After draining is completed, reconnect the fuel line.

2. Loosen the carburetor drain screw, and drain the carburetor into an approved gasoline container. After draining is completed, tighten the carburetor drain screw.

3. Pour a tablespoon 5 10 cm3 (5 10 cc) of clean engine oil into each cylinder.

Storage Precautions If your engine will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank and carburetor, it is important to reduce the hazard of gasoline vapor ignition. Select a well ventilated storage area away from any appliance that operates with a flame, such as a furnace, water heater, or clothes dryer. Also avoid any area with a spark producing electric motor, or where power tools are operated.

If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, because that promotes rust and corrosion.

Keep the engine level in storage. Tilting can cause fuel or oil leakage.

Unless all fuel has been drained from the fuel tank, leave the fuel valve in the CLOSED or OFF position to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage.

With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the engine to keep out dust. A hot engine and exhaust system can ignite or melt some materials. Do not use sheet plastic as a dust cover. A nonporous cover will trap moisture around the engine, promoting rust and corrosion.

If installed, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place. Recharge the battery once a month while the engine is in storage. This will help to extend the service life of the battery.

Removal from Storage Check your engine as described in the BEFORE OPERATION CHECKS section of this manual (see page 3 ).

If the fuel was drained during storage preparation, fill the tank with fresh gasoline. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling, be sure it contains only fresh gasoline. Gasoline oxidizes and deteriorates over time, causing hard starting.

If the cylinders were coated with oil during storage preparation, the engine may smoke briefly at startup. This is normal.

TRANSPORTING

If the engine has been running, allow it to cool for at least 15 minutes before loading the engine-powered equipment on the transport vehicle. A hot engine and exhaust system can burn you and can ignite some materials.

Keep the engine level when transporting to reduce the possibility of fuel leakage. If the fuel tank is equipped with a fuel valve, move the fuel valve lever to OFF.

Possible Cause Correction

1. Check air filter. Filter element(s) restricted.

Clean or replace filter element(s) (P. 9).

2. Check fuel. Bad fuel; engine stored without treating or draining gasoline, or refueled with bad gasoline.

Drain fuel tank and carburetor (p. 12). Refuel with fresh gasoline (p. 7).

3. Take engine to an authorized Honda servicing dealer, or refer to shop manual.

Fuel filter restricted, carburetor malfunction, ignition malfunction, valves stuck, etc.

FUSE REPLACEMENT

The electric starter relay circuit and battery charging circuit are protected by a 25-ampere fuse. If the fuse burns out, the electric starter will not operate. The engine can be started manually if the fuse burns out, but running the engine will not charge the battery.

1. Remove the 6 X 12 mm screw from the rear cover of the engine switch box.

2. Remove the fuse cover, and inspect the fuse.

If the fuse is burnt out, remove the fuse cover, then pull out and discard the burnt-out fuse. Install a new 25-ampere fuse, and reinstall the fuse cover.

NOTICE

Never use a fuse with a rating greater than 25 amperes. Serious damage to the electrical system or a fire could result.

3. Reinstall the rear cover. Install the 6 X 12 mm screw and tighten it securely.

Frequent fuse failure usually indicates a short circuit or an overload in the electrical system. If the fuse burns out frequently, take the engine to a servicing Honda dealer for repair.

Battery Connections for Electric Starter

Use a 12-volt battery with an ampere-hour rating of at least 45 Ah.

Be careful not to connect the battery in reverse polarity, as this will short circuit the battery charging system. Always connect the positive (+) battery cable to the battery terminal before connecting the negative ( —) battery cable, so your tools cannot cause a short circuit if they touch a grounded part while tightening the positive (+) battery cable end.

1. Connect the battery positive (+) cable to the starter solenoid terminal as shown.

2. Connect the battery negative (—) cable to an engine mounting bolt, frame bolt, or other good engine ground connection.

3. Connect the battery positive (+) cable to the battery positive (+) terminal as shown.

4. Connect the battery negative (—) cable to the battery negative (—) terminal as shown.

5. Coat the terminals and cable ends with grease.

Carburetor Modifications for High Altitude Operation

At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will be too rich. Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. A very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting. Operation at an altitude that differs from that at which this engine was certified, for extended periods of time, may increase emissions.

High altitude performance can be improved by specific modifications to the carburetor. If you always operate your engine at altitudes above 1,500 meters (5,000 feet), have your servicing dealer perform this carburetor modification This engine, when operated at high altitude with the carburetor modifications for high altitude use, will meet each emission standard throughout its useful life.

Even with carburetor modification, engine horsepower will decrease about 3.5% for each 300-meter (1,000-foot) increase in altitude. The effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater than this if no carburetor modification is made.

NOTICE When the carburetor has been modified for high altitude operation, the air-fuel mixture will be too lean for low altitude use. Operation at altitudes below 1,500 meters (5,000 feet) with a modified carburetor may cause the engine to overheat and result in serious engine damage. For use at low altitudes, have your servicing dealer return the carburetor to original factory specifications.

Oxygenated Fuels

Some conventional gasolines are being blended with alcohol or an ether compound. These gasolines are collectively referred to as oxygenated fuels. To meet clean air standards, some areas of the United States and Canada use oxygenated fuels to help reduce emissions.

If you use oxygenated fuel, be sure it is unleaded and meets the minimum octane rating requirements.

Before using an oxygenated fuel, try to confirm the fuel's contents. Some states/provinces require this information to be posted on the pump.

The following are the EPA approved percentages of oxygenates:

ETHANOL — (ethyl or grain alcohol) 10% by volume You may use gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol by volume. Gasoline containing ethanol may be marketed under the name Gasohol.

MTBE

(methyl tertiary butyl ether) 15% by volume You may use gasoline containing up to 15% MTBE by volume.

METHANOL (methyl or wood alcohol) 5% by volume You may use gasoline containing up to 5% methanol by volumeas long as it also contains cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors to protect the fuel system. Gasoline containing more than 5% methanol by volume may cause starting and/or performance problems. It may also damage metal, rubber, and plastic parts of your fuel system.

If you notice any undesirable operating symptoms, try another service station or switch to another brand of gasoline. Fuel system damage or performance problems resulting from the use of an oxygenated fuel containing morethan the percentages of oxygenates mentioned above are not covered under the Distributor's Limited Warranty

Emission Control System Information

Source of Emissions The combustion process produces carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and hydrocarbons. Control of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen is very important because, under certain conditions, they react to form photochemical smog when subjected to sunlight. Carbon monoxide does not react in the same way, but it is toxic.

Honda utilizes lean carburetor settings and other systems to reduce the emissions of carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, and hydrocarbons.

The U.S., California Clean Air Acts and Environment Canada EPA, California and Canadian regulations require all manufacturers to furnish written instructions describing the operation and maintenance of emission control systems.

The following instructions and procedures must be followed in order to keep the emissions from your Honda engine within the emission standards.

Tampering and Altering Tampering with or altering the emission control system may increase emissions beyond the legal limit. Among those acts that constitute tampering are:

• Removal or alteration of any part of the intake, fuel, or exhaust systems.

• Altering or defeating the governor linkage or speed adjusting mechanism to cause the engine to operate outside its design parameters.

Problems That May Affect Emissions If you are aware of any of the following symptoms, have your engine inspected and repaired by your servicing dealer.

• Hard starting or stalling after starting. • Rough idle. • Misfiring or backfiring under load. • Afterburning (backfiring). • Black exhaust smoke or high fuel consumption.

Replacement Parts The emission control systems on your Honda engine were designed, built, and certified to conform with EPA, California and Canadian emission regulations. We recommend the use of genuine Honda parts whenever you have maintenance done. These original-design replacement parts are manufactured to the same standards as the original parts, so you can be confident of their performance. The use of replacement parts that are not of the original design and quality may impair the effectiveness of your emission control system.

A manufacturer of an aftermarket part assumes the responsibility that the part will not adversely affect emission performance. The manufacturer or rebuilder of the part must certify that use of the part will not result in a failure of the engine to comply with emission regulations.

Maintenance Follow the maintenance schedule on page 7 . Remember that this schedule is based on the assumption that your machine will be used for its designed purpose. Sustained high-load or high temperature operation, or use in unusually wet or dusty conditions, will require more frequent service.
