At rst glance, Grade11 Handsworth studentShaunti Bains appears tobe a typical teen.

Shes an avid reader ofsci-, fantasy and comicbooks (Spider-Man isher favourite, althoughthe Dark Knight is givingSpidey a run for hismoney).

But across the world,in the hermit kingdom ofthe Democratic PeoplesRepublic of Korea, Bainsis a real-life hero.

She has spent morethan half of her lifefundraising and feedingmalnourished kids, andshe recently returnedhome from a trip to NorthKorea with First Steps,a non-prot that donatessoy beans and equipmentto process nutrient-richsoy milk.

The pariah state is bestknown for the dictatorialKim dynasty and theircombative rhetorictowards the West, butfor Bains, its a matter ofnutrition, not geopolitics.

If you look what soybeans contain, theyvegot all the essentialamino acids, minerals.I know theres iron inthere. Theres some goodcarbohydrates. Theressome really good stuff, she said.

Bains visit includedstops at orphanages, boarding schools, daycares, health clinicsand soy milk factoriesbeyond count, where theygot to check in on thesupplies and maintain theequipment supplied byFirst Steps.

First Steps collectsdonations, which areused to purchase soybeans, soy milk processingmachines and packets ofmicronutrients dubbedSprinkles. The suppliesare then distributed toschool-age children, infants and expectantmothers in North Korea.

A $30 donation buysa bag of soy beans, which

can provide 30 kids witha cup of soy milk perday for a month. TheCanadian made VitaCowand VitaGoat machinesgrind, cook and lter thesoybeans into soy milk. The $7,000 electricity-powered VitaCow typicallyproduces 2,000 cups ofsoy milk per day. TheVitaGoat, which costsabout $4,000 and runson burning biomass, canprovide 1,500 kids withtheir daily cup.

Bains philanthropystarted early. At six, shefounded Pitter Pats, akids club that fundraisesfor First Steps.

The whole point is toget kids involved kidshelping kids. I noticed thatwhen kids get involved, the adults sort of feelobligated to help too,Bains said with a laugh.

Through the clubsnewsletter, Pitter Patshas reached thousands ofkids, according to SusanRitchie, First Stepsfounder and executivedirector. Ritchie foundedFirst Steps in 2001 afterseeing the malnutritionrst-hand as an interpreterfor a Canadian delegationto the country.

In 2014, the charityraised $860,000 and 81per cent of their expenseswent into programming, according to lings withthe Canada RevenueAgency.

That meant 65 tonnesof soybeans and numerouspieces of equipment, stainless steel storage cansand detergent thoughthe charity aims to directmost of its donations tothings North Koreans canprocure from within theirown country.

On any given day, weare reaching approximately100,000 children with acup of soy milk, Ritchiesaid.

Bains and Ritchie metthrough First BaptistChurch in Vancouver.Bains grandmother, LindaZlotnik, made a similartrip with Ritchie 11 yearsago.

Ritchie invited Bains tojoin her on the most recentof First Steps quarterlyvisits to North Korea soshe could see rst-handthe results of the workshes done.

Shes been verycommitted from a youngage. I have always wantedher to come for her to

see how she is literallychanging lives in NorthKorea, and for thechildren that shes helpingto have a chance to meether, Ritchie said. WhenI introduced who she wasand explained what shehad been doing, the peoplewere really astonished.

Bains got to interactwith the kids in theorphanages and boardingschools, using thegovernment-appointedchaperones as interpreters. What struck her was howmuch smaller the NorthKorean kids were, theirgrowth stunted throughmalnutrition.

Im like the size of twoof them, even if theyreolder than me. Theyrethat malnourished, shesaid. I noticed how tinythe little desks are. I dontthink I could sit in one ofthem.

Still, they managed tocommunicate as kids do,albeit with some uniquechallenges to overcome.

Id ask them Whatare your favourite colours?Do you play sports? Stufflike that. Honestly, I thinksome of them were maybea bit scared of me becauseI was this huge Canadian,

    she said.Beyond the culture

shock, Bains noticedshadows of the state. Not all schools anddaycares are equal. Notsurprisingly, the ones thathave been paid a visit bythe reigning Kim havebeen dressed up.

They go to all thistrouble but when youlook at it, you know itsjust for show because theleader went there. Andtheres another place andthe leader didnt go to,so who cares, right? shesaid. The contrast is abit disturbing because youcould have spent some ofthis money on food for thekids.

While governmentcommunications had anair of having been madeup, Bains said she had nodoubts about the genuinepassion and sense ofpurpose demonstrated bythe workers producing thesoy milk, Bains said.

There was a womanwho had worked there for40 years. We interviewedher and asked What areyour hobbies? She saidMy hobby is makingsoy milk for children,Bains said. Its pretty

incredible how dedicatedtheir workers are there.Their lives revolve aroundmaking soy milk for thechildren. Theyre reallyproud of what they do. Itsmuch more than just a jobfor them. Its somethingthey can be proud ofbecause they know whatthey do is helping.

The trip also gaveBains some perspectiveon the daily lives of NorthKoreans. Under such tightsupervision and with statepropaganda constantlyreminding citizens of thegreatness of Kim JongUn, Kim Jong Il and KimIl Sung, its hard to get aread on North Koreansunderstanding of theirown country and of thewider world, Bains said.

You dont reallyknow what they thinkof the situation with theleader because theyre notallowed to say anythingnegative. You dont knowif they believe the positivethings they say or if theyresaying them because theyhave to, she said. Thepeople dont seem sad oranything but at the sametime, I dont think they

  • Goldsmith-Jones calls foropendebate onBill C-51mentioned his record ofintroducing two privatemembers bills and beingamong a group of 11Conservative backbencherswho voiced support for theright of all MPs to speakfreely in Parliament.

Nonetheless, in thehour-long debate thatranged from such topicsas proposed pipelines totax policies, social housingand the Syrian refugeecrisis, the candidates rarelywavered from their partylines.

Possibly the mostinteresting moments inthe Squamish Chamberof Commerce lunch cameafter a question askingif there was anything intheir partys platformswith which they didntpersonally agree.

This is going to get usall in trouble, said Liberalcandidate and formerWest Vancouver mayorPamela Goldsmith-Jonesto appreciative laughter. Her answer, perhapsunsurprisingly, concernedLiberal leader JustinTrudeaus support for thecontroversial Bill C-51.

It is a classic StephenHarper omnibus bill, she said. It is bundledtogether with egregiousthings that offendCanadian rights andfreedoms. The only wayto get rid of those piecesof it you want us to get ridof is to get rid of StephenHarpers government . . .It is not a balanced bill, but there are aspects thatwe need and it is timeto shine the light of dayon it, debate it openly aswe do with all legislationand keep the pieces that

will keep us safe whilebalancing that with ourrights and freedoms thatwe treasure.

For NDP candidateLarry Koopman, who ownsa cottage-rental businesson the Sunshine Coast, his only concern abouthis partys platform isthe proposed amount ofspending on foreign aid.

We had earlier madea commitment to increaseour foreign aid fundto 0.07 of our GDP,Koopman explained. Thisis something we backedaway from because we havepriorities and other plansthat we have worked out,but this is something thatI feel strongly that I thinkwe should be going there. It is still our goal, so I willdefend the party that way,but we have taken a backstep.

Melamed took a pageout of the Grits playbookand said the Greens shouldconsider raising taxes onthe rich.

When I looked at ourplatform for a fully costed

budget, there is one issue, and I applaud the Liberalparty for suggesting it, andits raising taxes on thewealthiest Canadians. Weare taking other measuresto try and capture someof that wealth by trying toclose down the loopholesthat allow them to parktheir money off-shore. . . Its not part of ourplatform, but as an MPIm going to work withwhoever is Minister ofFinance to advocate forthat greater balance.

Weston pointed to hiscontroversial handling of aFirst Nations land treaty in2012.

Im a big advocatefor the Sliammon Peoplebut when I saw the treaty, there was a clause that saidwhen there is a conictbetween Sliammon lawand Canadian law, thatSliammon law wouldprevail . . . I went tothe prime ministerand I said, Im sorry, even though it is in myriding, even though thegovernment is promotingthis treaty and eventhough I helped achieveit, I cant support that. There were intonationsof consequences andthings like that, but theyrespected my decision.

    VIEWPOINT

Veiled critiqueT heres no doubt about it. Thiselection has brought up the bigissues for Canadians. The shrinking middle class, taking

control of climate change, and apparently, what a woman wears on her face during aone-minute citizenship oath.Thats the impression youd have if you

watched the French language leadersdebate this week.Conservative leader Stephen Harper

and Bloc Quebecois leader GillesDuceppe found themselves natural alliesin going after the niqab, the face veil wornby a small fraction of Muslim women. Our Charter of Rights and Freedoms

makes it amply clear: People can practisetheir religion in any way they like, solong as it doesnt infringe on the rights ofothers or violate any laws. If the niqab is asymbol of oppression of women, like the

PM and Duceppe are insisting, why arewe granting citizenship to the man who isdoing the oppressing? And if its womens issues that are

going to decide this election, thereare probably more pressing ones, likeaddressing why Aboriginal women aredisappearing and being murdered inhugely disproportionate numbers. At best, this is a distraction from the

real issues. At worst, we worry this issimply a dog whistle meant to motivateracists into the ballot booth.Thankfully, we have a dozen candidates

here who are more than happy to talkabout those real issues.See our listings for North Shores all-

candidates meetings on page 11 and showup to ask the candidates (or, ahem, theones who bother to show up) what theythink.

you, Sept. 9 Mailbox. The people of Burnaby North-Seymour will decide

who best represents them. Ms. (Tabitha) Clearly hasonly one vote in this process and obviously has madeher choice but wishes to deny a choice to others.

She characterizes those who disagree with heras stupid. She also dislikes professors tellingher anything new, so her definition of smart is

apparently limited to those who think like her or herparty.

Do we really want another party drone, be it NDP,Conservative or Liberal, to represent Burnaby North-Seymour?

  • NDPs position onpipelines questionedCanadas anti-terrorismlaws is essential.

The last comprehensivelegislation concerningterrorism was passedbefore lawmakers had anyunderstanding of the scopeor power of the Internet, according to Beech, whopromised his Liberalswould continue to push forgreater oversight.

The bill needs to bescrapped, argued GreenParty candidate LynneQuarmby, who suggestedthere was no baby to throwout with that bathwater.

I havent heardanything in Bill C-51 thatneeds to stay, she told theonlookers.

    Baird Ellan agreed.Rather than focusing

on terrorists, the billtargets environmentalactivists, she said. Weknow its actually targetedat environmentalistsbecause (ConservativeMP) Joe Oliver called themradicals, she said.

While most candidatesmight downplay anytime spent in handcuffs,Quarmby spoke proudlyof the protest againstKinder Morgans proposedTrans Mountain pipelineexpansion that led to herarrest. I was sued byKinder Morgan, I wasarrested for violating theinjunction in an act of civildisobedience. I thoughtI was done, and thenElizabeth May called, she said, explaining herdecision to run.

Baird Ellan, a formerjudge, berated the NationalEnergy Board hearings, dubbing them a kangaroocourt.

Quarmby challengedthe NDP position on thepipeline expansion, statingthey had yet to take adenitive stance as a party.

Im opposing theKinder Morgan pipelinesand all other pipelines, she said. If were notgoing to expand the oilsands, we dont need anypipelines.

Beech, who has a homealong the pipeline, assuredthe audience he took theissue very seriously.

He also reminded thecrowd of the Liberalspledge to invest in greeninfrastructure and publictransit.

The Liberals willalso invest in affordablehousing and access toeducation, accordingto Beech, who calledthe approach a holisticsolution to the dearth ofopportunities available toyoung Canadians.

Besides who to vote for, candidates also debatedhow Canadians shouldvote.

Both Baird Ellan andQuarmby talked aboutushering in a system ofproportional representationas a top priority.

That conversation ledto an exchange aboutstrategic voting, a practiceQuarmby decried.

Theres another kindof strategic voting . . .you use the strategy of:

I am going to vote forthe person that I thinkwill best represent me inParliament, Quarmbysaid.

Baird Ellan disagreed. The sad reality of

our system is that onlyone of us is running fora party that can formgovernment, she said. Inthe next election peoplecan vote with their hearts.

Mike Little,Conservative candidate forBurnaby North-Seymour,did not attend the debate.

Based on herexperiences, Bains saidit would be a largemisconception on the partof Westerners to assumethe average North Koreanhas the same thirst forwar as the ruling regimeappears to have.

That sentiment isechoed by Ritchie, whonds the donors arentinterested in the politicsof North Korea just thepeople who are in need ofhelp.

There are people whorecognize that there arepeople there, just like us.Parents who want thebest for their children, who live in challengingcircumstances and we arethinking about them andpraying for them and wantto help them, she said.

Like manyphilanthropists, Bainsis nding theres abittersweet side to herwork when youvereached the end of whatyou have to give.

Theyre really gratefulfor everything youve sentbut you can only send somuch. You see the benetof it. The kids are so muchhealthier when theyvehad it, she said. Eventhough they could usemore, we just arent ableto help everyone. We havelimitations. Saying Sorry,we cant help you wasprobably the worst part,

    she said.Though it may seem

like a lot for someonewhos just 16, Bainsapproach to helping othersis something that couldbe easily replicated byanyone, she said.

I think when you knowof an issue happening

and youre not helpless todo something about it, itseems really silly not to doanything. I know peoplealways get frustrated whenpeople in power dontdo anything but ordinarypeople actually have a lotof power to help this, sowhy not?

  • in her opening remarks.Canadas handling of

the humanitarian crisisin Syria is indicative of acountry that has lost itsway, argued Thomas.

Canada should beleading the way, notparticipating in a civilwar, she said. Canadaneeds to re-establish,reassert itself as apeacekeeping country.

The Conservative Partyalso received a lambastingfrom Liberal candidate

Jonathan Wilkinson, whosaid the country wasmoving backwards onmany issues includingenvironmental assessmentsand diversifying theeconomy.

In 1994 Canada wasthe highest ranked countryin terms of gender equalitymeasures, he said. Now,we rank 23rd . . . I wishthat . . . Mr. (Andrew)Saxton had done usthe courtesy of beinghere today to have thatconversation, he said, referring to the absent

    Conservative incumbent.Wilkinson also

took issue with theConservative Partysapproach to majorenergy projects like theKinder Morgan pipelineexpansion. Rather thanserve as neutral arbiters, the ruling party havebecome advocates forenergy projects, according

    to Wilkinson.Theyve given people

the impression that theprocess actually isnt fair,he said.

While Thomas andMartin were steadfast intheir opposition to pipelineexpansion, Wilkinson despite his backgroundwith green tech rms cautioned against issuing a

blanket no on any type ofproject.

If you want to pay forhealth care, if you wantto pay for education, youneed to be able to get toyes, he said. It is apipe dream to think thatwe can switch off the oiland switch on the solarpanels and that is actuallya solution.

Martin acknowledgedthe need to maintainCanadas economy, butcalled for a broader andfaster plan to switch usoff oil.

If the NDP formsCanadas nextgovernment, one of thetop priorities will beeducation, according toThomas.

The place was pulsating with live music from the Adam WoodallBand, and the atmosphere was vibrant with people enjoying themselves, dancing, eating a barbecuedinner, drinking a variety of the Lower Mainlands best craft beers from fun, mini beer steins, biddingon silent auction items, socializing, and fundraising for a great cause. September is Arthritis AwarenessMonth and a number of NorthShore residents who are affectedby the disease are doing their partto raise awareness of the realitiesof a diagnosis as well as the stepsthat can be taken to improvequality of life for patients and theirfamilies.

West Vancouvers Sheila Kerr isone of two North Shore residentswho sit on the Arthritis PatientAdvisory Board, a group of patientswho work with researchers atArthritis Research Canada (ARC), aLower Mainland-based centre thatconducts consumer-driven clinicalresearch and trials related to arthritisprevention, diagnosis, prognosis andliving well.

Kerr serves as a co-chair of ARCspatient advisory board. Joining her asa member is fellowWest Vancouverresident Linda Hirukawa.

Its absolutely fascinating whatwe do. We are patients who interactwith researchers on a regular basis toinform their research, says Kerr.

Serving as a board memberaffords those living with the diseasean opportunity to get involved inarthritis research from the inceptionof a research idea through to thedissemination of results.

Getting patients activelyinvolved in research can providevaluable insights into the issues that

matter to us. It may be changingthe methodology, changing whichoutcomes are measured, or gettingthe results out to the public in amore timely and understandableway. We are fortunate that there is aculture of inclusiveness and respectfor meaningful patient engagementin research at ARC. ARC was anearly adaptor of this idea (in 2001)and I believe they are leaders in theeld. By working together with theresearchers, patients hope to betterimprove the lives of the many peopleliving with arthritis, says Kerr.

Kerr, now 60, was diagnosedwith osteoarthritis when she was inher 40s. She has been involved withthe Arthritis Patient Advisory Boardsince 2011.

It is immensely stimulating tointeract with the researchers who arepassionate about what they do andwho work hard to make a differencein our lives. I have benettedpersonally by being exposed toresearch which can inform me howto manage my disease based on thebest available research evidence.Of course, there is always thesatisfaction of volunteering in an areayou feel passionate about, she says.

As part of their work, the boardruns an annual public forumentitled Reaching Out with ArthritisResearch (ROAR). This yearsedition, ROAR 2015, marks the 11thand is being presented Saturday,Oct. 3 at the central branch of theVancouver Public Library from 9:15a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

We want to ll that gap betweenresearch and getting the word out topeople with arthritis, says Kerr.

  • there are ways that you canmanage your disease to livebetter in the future, sheadds.

This years theme isOsteoarthritis and You -What you can do now!, andresearchers will address avariety of topics, includingearly diagnosis andmanagement, slowing theprogression of the disease,as well as a discussion of

joint replacements, which, according to Kerr, arebecoming increasinglycommon in people under 60.

The main reason isto try to prevent or delayosteoarthritis. And to thatend we want to inform thepublic that there are thingsthat you can do early oneven before osteoarthritis isseen on an X-ray, she says.

ROAR 2015 speakers willinclude Cheryl Koehn, Dr.Jolanda Cibere, Dr. Michael

Hunt, Judit Takacs, Dr.DeborahMarshall and Dr.Nelson Greidanus.

While this yearsforum theme speaks toosteoarthritis, the mostcommon type of arthritis, arthritis patients of all typesare encouraged to attend,as well as health careprofessionals, researchersand community members atlarge.

Those unable to attendare encouraged to participate

via a free live webcast. ATweet Chat will also beheld.

North VancouversTamara Komuniecki, 43,was diagnosed with severejuvenile rheumatoid arthritiswhen she was six-years-old.

This month, she haspartnered with The ArthritisSociety and is sharing herstory in hopes it inspiresthose sharing her diagnosis, encouraging them to staypositive and continue todream big.

The Edgemont Villageresident was previouslyinvolved with The ArthritisSociety going back 15 yearswhen she had been livingin Edmonton, serving as aleader in its Arthritis Self-Management Program.

Its been my goal for justabout my entire adult life tospread the word, she says. While shes gone througha bit of a quiet period inrecent years, shes ready tobe loud again.

Komuniecki took a breakfrom arthritis advocacy fora few years related to thebirth of her son, Finn, age5, and the result of changingcareers. The formersuccessful national broadcastand print journalist iscurrently working as anentrepreneur, serving as theowner of Delish GeneralStore (delishgeneralstore.com).Delish started as an onlinemagazine before evolvinginto an online store andnow has a physical locationoffering a variety of curatedand created sundries andwares on Granville Island. She hopes to eventuallyexpand into EdgemontVillage.

    I now have a second

successful career, my rstcareer was as a long-timejournalist and I had someincredible opportunitiesand experiences. Andso I did a lot of speakingtours to kids in schools,to medical students, todoctors conventions - kindof anybody who wouldlisten. And now I continueto be struggling with thisdisease. Ive been gettingjoints replaced now. I almostfeel like I have a secondexperience with it as a veryactive disease because all ofmy joints that have had thedisease in them for so longare failing now, so now I getthis second kind of wave ofit where I have to replace allthose joints, she says.

According to TheArthritis Society, more than4.6 million Canadians (onein six aged 15 and older) arebelieved to have the disease, which can impact people atany point in their life, andof any physical condition orethnic background. Mainsymptoms include chronicjoint pain, stiffness andswelling.

Despite the constantimpact of the disease onKomunieckis day-to-daylife, the result of chronicpain, multiple previous andpending joint replacementsas well as relatedsurgeries, and debilitatinginammatory attacks, thebusy wife, mother andentrepreneur refuses to letthe disease slow her down.

I think that people wholive with pain can eithersuccumb to it, to yield to it,and feel powerless against it,but Ive always taken it theother way, she says.

    While she of course

remains sensitive to herbody and avoids causingunnecessary damage bypushing herself too hard,in terms of positivity andenergy, I am someone whois the eternal optimist,Im eternally energetic.Im hungry and thirsty forexperiences and adventuresand so I just kind of keepgoing. I always think thatI could have it worse. Myarthritis is not somethingthat will be fatal, hopefully, and its manageable and Istill have my brain and I stillhave the love of my family. So whatever else is thrown atme, its OK because Im stillhere and Im still learningand living, she says.

Komuniecki hopesto continue ndingopportunities to be aspokesperson for arthritispatients.

I just feel like beingvocal is what I do. I feel likeI can speak from the pulpitwith great experience. Itsalways been a great passionof mine to be a role modeland inspiration for kidsnewly diagnosed or livingwith this painful diseasebecause so many of themprobably think its a lifesentence for being sedentaryand having pain and nothaving any adventure orcareer accomplishments butit doesnt have to be that wayat all, she says.

Theres a traditionalHome & Harvest show
