Each of these grants has a story behind it. A need was identified, an application submitted and our Charitable Funds Distribution committee decided to add our small piece of the pie into the mix. In every case there is an organization working every day to help people live healthier lives. You might not think of the Cook County ATV club in that group, but they run a safety program for all youth because they know that machines may be ridden by uncertified visitors and friends.

Hovland Fire asked us to partner with them to address the need for carbon monoxide testing equipment, the Pulse CO-Oximeter. There is a history of CO poisoning in Cook County leading to illness and death. With the increasing use of plug-in CO monitors in homes that measure concentration in the air, there is a greater likelihood of 911 calls if the alarms go off. The unit in the picture is now on the primary ambulance at the hospital, so it can be used at the scene to test blood concentrations of CO and other toxic gases. This could be for a victim or a firefighter, and in the past the only possible test was done in a lab.

Most of the other grants awarded are to groups and projects that we have worked with consistently through the years, and with your help we hope to continue to support their work.

Program Highlights The second half of 2012 was busy at Care Partners!

Volunteer Training. In October Kay and Jeannette trained seven new volunteers with help from Sandy Stover, Barb Bottger and Carla LaPointe.

Light Up a Life. Our 4th Annual campaign raised $1500. Forty people took part in a moving Tree Lighting Ceremony with Rev. Mary Ellen Ashcroft and music by Nora Bockovich.

Christmas Trees at Magnetic North. Many thanks to Vicki Biggs-Anderson who raised $1,000 for Care Partners by inviting people to cut trees on her farm, visit her animals, drink cider and make a donation.

Peace of Mind. We worked with two families who pi-loted home monitoring systems as part of the Broad-band Initiative to help elders stay in their homes.

Art Therapy with Memory Care Clients. A joint project with the Care Center Activities Department, funded by the Cook County Community Fund, allowed seven residents at the Care Center to explore art with art therapist Belle Janicek. Since June, Belle has worked with these artists twice a month to do drawings, painting, mono-printing, banners, and self-portraits.

WTIP on Caregiving. On December 6th, Care Partners took part in a 1st Thursday Community Conversation hour-long show on Caregiving. Jeannette and Kay were joined by Cindy Conkins, a senior planner for the Arrowhead Area Agency on Aging.

Thank you all for continuing your support of NSHCF. “Down Memory Lane 20 years ago” in the News Herald of 3/23 repeats the 1993 news of the formation of the North Shore Health Foundation. Looking back over 20 years it is hard to imagine we have come to where we are today – with Care added to the name, and Care Partners in full swing. It is scary and exciting to think where we might be in 2033. As you look through this newsletter, read between the lines and notice the caring work so many people do in our small community. The hospital board is trying hard to take a long look forward even in the midst of new challenges to their funding. Oral Health is maturing into a real program after only one full year of operation. Care Partners is serving many people in the individualized way that everyone appreciates. The Golf Scramble with a new name and a new date, and the Dragon Boat Festival in its 10th year are both building for the future.

Our grants for the first quarter all fit our role as the niche funder that quickly and easily helps our local folks do their good work. We usually stay in the background and it is not really necessary for the nursing student or the EMS conference participant or someone who gets a ride through the senior center to know how the service happened. Some do, and we get wonderful acknowledgements sometimes, but it also feels really good to know that we are helping Paula and Jim and Bev and others do their jobs a little easier and a little better.

Our board changed as the new year began. NSHCF thanks Suellen Kruse, Jean Christie, Joan Abrahamson and Roxy Sherer. The foundation would definitely not be as strong as it is today without their years of work well done. We welcome Barb Heideman to our board.

We have received memorial gifts recently for some very special supporters that we have lost. Bob Johnston was our accountant for many years and a mentor to me. Jim Johnson always kept health care issues before the county board. Family and friends have donated in memory of Ruth Humphrey and Dora Lee Throckmorton.

Executive Director’s Notes April 2013

President’s Message2013, here we come! The foundation is planning for a very exciting year as we celebrate our 20th anniversary and achieve a major milestone of granting $500,000 to health care in our county. All of the grants through the years have been made in fulfilling our mission to benefit health care for all who live, work, and visit Cook County. We also have been active in the formation and support of the Care Partners Program and the Oral Health Task Force for Children.

As we move forward this year we will continue to support these programs and issue grant funds. We will also be exploring new programs designed to improve health care for our aging population. We are taking this approach because we believe the health care system will be greatly challenged as government supported programs are reduced or eliminated. We will update you in our next newsletter as our direction becomes clearer.

Here’s the key. Your generous support in the past through gifts, membership, and support of fund raising events has enabled us to make substantial contributions in our community. I encourage your continued support and ask you to tell your friends and neighbors of the many North Shore Health Care Foundation pro-grams that have a direct impact on our health care. I would also encourage your consideration of a contribution to our endowment fund which is a major financial cornerstone of the foundation.

Thank you again for you support.

Facility Planning and RedesignCook County North Shore Hospital and Care Center (CCNSH&CC) is embarking on a facility expansion and renovation to its existing facility. CCNSH&CC intends to upgrade, rearrange and refresh the building to meet the contemporary and emerging service patterns and needs. Changes in customer use, technology, functionality and regulations require changes in the building. The facility was originally completed in 1958. The present building is the fifth iteration on the site, completed in 2004. The following is a summary of the addition and remodeling timeline:

1958 The original building was finished.1963 First addition which added the 300 wing in the Care Center.1968 Second addition which added the 200 wing in the Care Center and a portion by the Maintenance office.1996 Third addition which added the rounded portion of the hospital, part of lab, new ER, X-ray and basement area.1998 Fourth addition was to the Care Center which added the dining room and 100 wing and then remodeled the 200 and 300 wings. 2002 Basement remodel for Physical Therapy and Cardiac Rehab.2004 Fifth addition and remodel of the kitchen and part of maintenance shop.

The Board of Directors reviewed and analyzed the financial information and service statistics by each of the facility divisions: Hospital, Ambulance, Home Health and Care Center. In particular, the Care Center operations were discussed in detail. The Care Center is an important service to the Community and there are no reasonable local alternatives. Based upon the extensive review and discussion regarding the current services provided and the possibility to provide additional services, an update to the building is required and CCNSH&CC is proceeding with the next steps of a capital project. The existing services at the Hospital and Care Center will be incorporated into the proposed plans.

“Honoring Choices” Health Care Directive

A health care directive makes it easier for your family and physician to ensure you receive the health care you wish if you are unable to speak for yourself. An injury or severe illness can occur at any time in your life, so don’t put it off – this is an important document to make your choices known in case you become incapacitated.

The North Shore Health Care Foundation has been promoting health care directives for years through educational programs and by providing forms through the clinic and hospital. Now we’re taking advantage of a great new resource in the state: “Honoring Choices Minnesota” is a state-wide initiative to provide forms on-line, along with many resources to help people fill out a health care directive and discuss their wishes with their family.

We have plenty of resources to help you complete your health care directive:

Make an appointment to discuss this with your physician, clergy, or lawyer. Go to www.northshorehealthcarefoundation.org and click on Care Partners to download a form. Go to www.honoringchoices.com for helpful information and videos. Click on their Resource Tab to download forms. Call Care Partners at 218-387-3788 for an informal meeting with a trained facilitator to complete the form.

Once you fill out your health care directive, be sure to let your health care agent know your wishes, and discuss it with your family and your physician, minister, and/or lawyer. Make copies easily available and make sure it’s on file at all medical facilities you use.

You can use another Minnesota health care directive form such as the form that used to be used by the clinic and hospital in Cook County. Just make sure you keep it up to date.

When you fill out a health care directive, you’ll also be helping your loved ones at a time when you’re not able to make those critical health decisions on your own.

North Shore Health Care Foundation AnnualBBQ June 23Have you ever been to the NSHCF annual BBQ? If you haven’t, you have missed a great meal and a grand evening “up the trail”. This year the BBQ is Sunday June 23rd at Gunflint Lodge. The Red Paddle cash bar opens at 4 pm and the BBQ buffet begins at 5 pm. Chefs at the Lodge prepare BBQ ribs, chicken, salmon, cheesy potatoes, salad, vegetables and dessert. Gerald Thilmany will again serenade us with his accordion. All are invited to sing-a-long or make a request.

Why do we host this BBQ? This event raises funds to help our ENDOWMENT grow. This endowment insures our permanent ability to support health care in Cook County. Check out our web site www.northshorehealthcarefoundation.org and learn about our many activities and the projects we support.

There’s a new dragon in town!We can’t quite believe it, but the NSDBF dragon is 10 years old this year. We’ve come a long way since the initial idea was hatched and fledged in 2003, and we’re committed to making this year’s festival the best ever for participants and spectators alike. We’re celebrating our 10th year with an updated website and Facebook page, so be sure to visit us on the internet for updates and to see our new dragon by Grand Marais artist Kelly Dupre (who created our original dragon 9 years ago). Watch for a special 10th birthday edition of the NSDBF T-shirt for our teams and visitors.

Visit the new website and “Like” us on Facebook......stay tuned for

updates throughout the spring! Individual paddlers welcome!
