North Shore Charter School

Recipient: Hawaii State Public Charter School Commission

Letter: Greetings,

Support North Shore Charter School and provide More Educational Options for

North Shore Families.

NSCS will provide an engaging and relevant alternative to traditional classroom

learning that is focused on developing the skills that students need for success in

high school and beyond.

North Shore Charter School will provide two distinct opportunities for students and

families: the opportunity to attend a school on the North Shore solely focused on

middle school grades 7th - 8th, and to learn in a Project and Problem-Based

Learning environment. Research has shown that PBL is the most effective method

for students of all backgrounds to acquire the skills necessary to be college and

career ready.

Andrea Schvaneveldt Laguna Niguel, CA 2017-05-09 I want better options for middle school education

Marilyn Roitman Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 We need another education option on the North Shore.

Patricia Holmberg Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 The North Shore needs & deserves a middle school that is not combined with a

high school campus.

Pollyanna Fisher-Pool honolulu, AL 2017-05-09 I want my children and the community to have an option to ensure success and

offer a new approach to learning.

Please support the north shore charter school!

Amanda Shumow Manhattan Beach, CA 2017-05-09 Our kids need this!

Linne' Holmberg Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 Yes! We need another choice for middle school students on the North Shore.

meleana judd haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 I believe the NS Charter School will provide a much needed service to our

community.

Amy Chiang Forest Hills, NY 2017-05-09 I'm signing because the North Shore desperately needs more (and stronger)

educational options for our keiki., especially at the middle school level. Too

many families are having to move to town or the mainland to provide their

children with better options and those that don't have the ability to move

elsewhere or afford expensive private schools have to make do at their

children's expense. All children deserve a good education as the foundation for

their future success.

Morgan Meeks Honolulu, HI 2017-05-09 The North Shore keiki need this!!!!

Pedro Sierra Bayamón, HI 2017-05-09 Schools are in need

William Ballard Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 I support this school and firmly believe our community needs this

leila Alli Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 We really need it!!!

Chris Parker Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 Because I went to Waialua HS in 1970's and it was challenging and unsafe to

be in 7th grade with 12 th grade students on same campus. I have attended

public meetings where the supporters of this school have discussed their

mission and curriculum and I think this school will be a worthy and necessary

beneficial part of our educational community for our children. As a social

worker I have heard first hand the struggles that students have suffered with

during their 7th and 8th grades while attending either one of our high schools

out here on the N S. I have also heard them say that it got better in the ninth

grade. The younger grades feel displaced and vulnerable in our high schools.

This idea has been discussed for many years and I am grateful that Colin

Kennedy and his team have done the hard work necessary to allow our

children this wonderful academic option. Thank you for your time and please

support our community with the approval of this much needed charter school.

Gayl Loose Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 I support the North Shore Charter School. Our 7th and 8th graders need a

positive learning environment where they can reach their full potential and

achieve the skills needed to perform well in high school and beyond.

Tracy Harris Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-09 Our keiki need a safe school for those transitional years into high school.

Integrated schools with very large populations combining middle/intermediate

and high school students can be intimidating for many students at this age.

Especially coming from smaller elementary school settings. The North Shore

needs a middle school dedicated to students ages 12-14 to grow, learn, lead

and become stronger students to make the transition into HS more stable.

Lori Henning Waialua, HI 2017-05-09 The North Shore needs educational options.

Katie Taladay Honolulu, HI 2017-05-10 I fully support this effort to establish a charter school on the North Shore. It is

e Onaga Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-10 We need a middle school for our children

Dali Pyzel haleiwa, HI 2017-05-10 Because it is unfair to not offer a public charter option options for the children of

the North Shore.

Options on the North Shore.

Sharon Muraco Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-10 I have two grandsons that will be entering school on north shore

where they need engaging learning and project-based education based in their

community.

Jessica Malcolm Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-10 As a mother and an active community member we are in desperate need of an

alternative school in our community.

Lauren Andrews Huntington Beach, CA 2017-05-10 Good for the children

Geoffrey Tice Laie, HI 2017-05-10 More education options are better for everyone: students, parents and schools.

maribeth Thompson Waialua, HI 2017-05-10 I believe in choices for all our keiki- driving off the north shore every day is a

hardship for many and there need to be options.

Darlene Morris Kahuku, HI 2017-05-10 I believe it will serve the Northshore well.

Celene Roberts Waialua, HI 2017-05-10 The North Shore desperately needs this school. I whole heartedly support the

Chloe Barger Haleiwa, HI 2017-05-10 I would like my niece and nephew to have a promising education and it is

definitely an important and needed change within the islands. And if these

current schools are rated at the bottom for numerous years something should

change. Blessings to the children. Also there are so many options and

improvements which would allow more benifits and make teenagers better

people for our communities and teach them about opportunity and guide them

to productive lives. They spend a large majority of early life in school. It needs

to be a positive healthy environment which fosters healthy and positive people.

Activity and athletics /arts should definitely be a part of curicullem as we all

need healthy outlets. Amen

May 11, 2017 Catherine Payne, Chairperson Ernest Nishizaki, Vice Chairperson Members, Hawaiʻi Public Charter School Commission Sent Via Electronic Mail: [email protected] Re: Support for Agenda Item VI. North Shore Charter School Application Aloha Chair Payne, Vice Chair Nishizaki, and Commission members:

This Hawai’i State Charter Schools Network (HPCSN) supports the application for North Shore Charter School. Charter public schools in Hawaiʻi provide choice for families and students in public education. Charter schools fill a choice gap and specific needs for the communities in which they will serve. The North Shore Charter School will provide families with a school dedicated to middle school students developing the skills (critical thinking and problem solving) needed for success in high school and beyond. If approved, this would be the first charter public school serving the North Shore community. There is a strong need for an additional educational program and for public school choice on the North Shore of O‘ahu, one of the remaining rural communities in the state. Currently, there are no “middle school only” options available to North Shore students. Public school students living anywhere from Ka‘a‘awa – Mokulei‘a only have the combined schools of Kahuku High & Intermediate, and Waialua High & Intermediate to attend, which combine 7-12 grades on the same campus. While both Kahuku and Waialua H & I offer great programs, they both have below average HSA scores, and above average chronic absenteeism. This may be attributed to a lack of engagement and achievement compared to other schools around the state. Charter public schools draw strong support from communities and families which are helping to address challenges in communities faced with lower than average achievement rates.

600 Queen St. C-4 Hon. HI 96813 www.Hawaiʻicharterschools.com 808-380-6403

North Shore Charter School had chosen a project- and problem-based curriculum specifically because research has shown that Project Based Learn creates more student engagement and better retention of skills and knowledge to address the student population of the North Shore. Opportunities to engage with relevant real world issues will drive success and better prepare students for high school, college, and careers. In my visits to charter schools around the state, I am struck by the importance of advancing school choice for families and students that are seeking different options in public education. Having a school choice options are critical for some that are seeking a different curriculum model or wish to have an alternative in their learning experience. Bottom line, charter schools fill a pent-up need in communities around the state, which is why we are supporting the application of North Shore Charter School. HPCSN works to support its member charter public schools and to be a voice for children and families that seek choice in an independent public school setting. We appreciate the opportunity to provide support on their behalf.

Sincerely,

Jeannine Souki Executive Director

Hawaiʻi Public Charter Schools Network
