NORTH SEEKING HIGH SPEED CONTINUOUS GYRO: Setting New Standards for Down-hole Drilling Measurement By: Ryan Tessier T he latest generation survey tool is taking the drilling industry by storm. Introduced by Stockholm Precision Tools AB (SPT) the new North seeking high speed continuous Gyro Tracer Directional™ is revolutionizing the industry and for the first time, a down-hole autopilot is capable of finding and cor- recting itself along a survey path, eliminating all possibility of drift. The result is the most accurate survey tool in the industry saving time and money for drilling companies around the world. ELIMINATING ERROR The high speed continuous Gyro Tracer Directional™ is com- prised of a gyroscopic module based on a North-seeking gyroscope and works complementary to SPT’s Gyro Tracer™. Stockholm Precision Tools General Manager Orlando Ramirez says accuracy is vital when designing this new equipment, “The new Gyro Tracer Directional system is accurate to 0.5% depending on the well profile. Our tool directly measures the earth’s rotation, finding the geographical true North; this makes it more accurate than alter- native tools which are based on indirect measurement methods.” Processing software integrated into the tool allows operators to observe real-time drill surveying and direct control of measuring while drilling systems. The focus of the Gyro Tracer Directional™ is to maximize the amount of information provided so detailed reports can be presented to the client, thereby saving time and money. In a recent control test done by the company, three different SPT systems were used in the same bore hole with the same pro- grammed drill locations. The results were astounding. Not only did all three systems follow the same drill path, but there was 0% drift in accuracy. The graph below shows the test results: SIZING UP THE COMPETITION How does the Gyro Tracer Directional™ compare to alternative tools currently on the market? At first glance, it’s easy to see that the Gyro Tracer Directional™ is a much smaller, more streamlined piece of equipment than its competitors. Measuring only 42.9mm in diameter and 1.8 metres in length, including the cable-head, the Gyro Tracer Directional™ is less than half the size of a competing model. The typical length of a competitor`s tool is 8 metres, over 6 metres more than the SPT Gyro Tracer Directional™. Learning to use the Gyro Tracer Directional™ is also easier than most other models. SPT maintains that a new operator will be able to learn how to use the tool within a week or less. With the release of the Gyro Tracer Directional™, Stockholm Precision Tools continues to set the standard for down-hole drilling equipment. This new advancement brings an increase in accuracy and data management that far surpasses anything else currently on the market. Early adopters are already seeing the benefits of using the new equipment, with improvements in accuracy, reli- ability and user-friendliness.
