WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD

Gathering Time Hymn 147 The First Nowell (vs. 3-5) Hymn 151 We Three Kings of Orient Are

Greeting, Welcome, and Opportunities for Discipleship Welcome to our guests and visitors! As a church of hospitality we invite you, if you feel comfortable, to introduce yourself at this time. We are glad you are here. We hope you will fill out the welcome pad (found in the pew holder) to help us get acquainted. We also invite you to join us in the Dickinson Room for coffee hour following worship. Everyone—please silence your cell phones.

Prelude Prelude on “Puer nobis nascitur” LeBegue

Call to Worship The magi come from many places, following a star. We come to worship, and the star sheds light on our lives. The magi brought gifts to offer the child. We, too, bring gifts—ourselves, our hopes, our dreams. Shepherds and magi—the meek and the mighty—all were welcome in Bethlehem. We, too, come to Bethlehem and then return to our home rejoicing.

Invocation

*Hymn 152 What Star Is This, with Beams So Bright (During the singing of the hymn, please pass Joys & Concerns to center aisle.)

*Call to Confession

*Prayer of Confession We confess, God of Holiness and Mercy, that we sometimes choose the darkness when we need your light; that we carry a winter in our hearts when we need your warmth; that we carry a dose of acid in our souls when we need your cleansing; that we carry a burden of guilt on our backs when we need your release. Hear our prayer, O God, enlighten us, warm us, cleanse us and release us through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

*Silent Confession (A time for personal confession of sin)

*Assurance of Forgiveness Hear the good news!

God loves us. God forgives us.

*Response (Hymn 113, refrain) Gloria in excelsis Deo!

Gloria in excelsis Deo!

*Passing of the Peace Having received Christ’s peace, let us share it by turning to our neighbors and greeting them, saying “May the peace of Christ be with you!”

WE HEAR THE WORD OF GOD

Prayer for Illumination

Sermon “No Senseless Journeys” The Rev. David Smith

WE RESPOND AND GIVE THANKS TO GOD

*Affirmation of Faith We are not alone. We live in God’s world. We believe in God: who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Holy Spirit. We trust in God. We are called to be the church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in creation, to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope, in life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God. Amen.

*Hymn 142 ‘Twas in the Moon of Wintertime Offering Offertory Anthem: Arise, Shine, for Your Light Has Come Bender

*Doxology (Hymn 133, Refrain) O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him; O come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord!

Celebration of the Lord’s Supper The Invitation to the Lord’s Table

Prayers of Thanksgiving and the Lord’s Prayer The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right…the faithful of every time and place, singing:

Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit … who teaches us to pray saying:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Communion of the People Our Lord invites all who trust in him, and all who long to trust in him, to share in this meal, which he has prepared. Communion will be received by intinction. Please come up the center aisle and return down side aisles. (If your diet requires gluten-free bread, please indicate that to the servers and it will be brought to you.)

Prayer after Communion We give you thanks, eternal God, that you have fed us in this sacrament. Fill us with a vision of your new creation, where all may have life, and have it abundantly; through Jesus Christ, the bread of life. Amen.

WE DISPERSE TO SERVE GOD IN THE WORLD

*Charge

*Benediction

*Congregational Amen (Hymn 568) *Postlude How Brightly Shines the Morning Star J. Pachelbel

Adult Education: Sundays, 9:30 a.m. in the library

The New Year brings new resolutions and new programs. We will make an attempt to deal

with the issue of white privileges in our country and our churches. This is of course a difficult

and controversial topic. In an effort to consider feedback from you, we will remain open to

shaping the program to match the needs of the congregation.

We want to begin by listening to parts of a DVD by the Rev. William Barber given in August

2016 at Chautauqua to great acclaim. He is well known as leader of “Moral Mondays”, the

civil rights protests in North Carolina. However, we need to do more than just listen and

engage in a respectful, honest and faithful discussion in the church. Please help us

accomplish this by attending the upcoming adult education sessions.
