Socratez Yoman is President of the Fellowship of
Baptist Churches in West Papua. He is not only a very
strong church leader but a passionate advocate for
West Papuans as a whole. Since 1961 up to 500,000
Papuans have died in the struggle for self-
determination. Others are held in prison where they
are variously interrogated, tortured or beaten to
death. In 2010 a leaked document from the
Indonesian Special Forces (Kopassus) revealed that
Socratez was listed at the top of a list of people in civil
society that Kopassus regards as “enemies”. Socratez
responded: “I speak up for justice, peace, human
rights and dignity. I must speak up for my people”. He
shrugged off the death threats and intimidation that
he and many others on the list suffer, by saying “This
is our daily life”.

General Assembly 2016: Updates This year’s General Assembly will be held from 15-19
November in Dunedin at the University of Otago.
Further information about Assembly can be found at
the PCANZ website here.
At this point, Northern Presbytery has sent
information to churches regarding the process for
Commissioning Ministers and Elders. This process is
not the same as at previous Assemblies. Previously, a
Commissioner (either a Minister or Elder) came from
each congregation within the presbytery. This year,
Presbytery will be entitled to Commission one
commissioner for each 100 members. More details are
here. Please do not hesitate to be in touch with us at
Northern Presbytery if you have any questions or
queries with any of this process. Please send your group
nominations to Presbytery by the 16th May.
The Northern Presbytery will send 6 Youth
Commissioners to the Assembly this year. Northern
Presbytery and PYM recognises the vital contribution
that young adults can and should make in the
discernment process of our church. A new Pilot is
being run this year to enable our youth
commissioners to be better prepared and to
understand the processes of General Assembly before
they arrive. Read here how this initiative will work.
Memorial Minutes: Part of the preparation of the White Book for the
Assembly includes the collection of memorial minutes
from Presbyteries for ministers and lay people. Could
all sessions please supply the Presbytery Clerk with
these memorial minutes of any ministers or notables
of the church who have died in the past 2 years.
Health & Safety Requirements for Churches &
Church Trusts: You are now able to download the new ICB Health &
Safety resources for churches that the ICB has created
to assist churches with the new health and safety
