From Father Mike
Lent is a season in which we are all invited to refocus on prayer. For many, this is simply a call to pray more frequently or for
longer durations of time. I have consistently recommended that at a minimum it’s hard to say you have a meaningful
relationship with Christ unless you are in contact with him for at least ten minutes every single day. Others look at different
ways of praying during Lent, especially using the scriptures and allowing the inspired Word of God to spark meditation.
Another dimension of prayer is to remember that the time we sacrifice in spending time with God not only is our way of
glorifying the Lord but is something we can offer on behalf of others, even before we actually pray for them. I am convinced
we often underestimate the power of prayer because we often miss or are not aware of the effects it has on others. It’s part
of why the church has us focus on prayer during Lent just as the bishop has called us to deepen our friendship with Christ
through the Uniting in Heart Plan.
For example, in praying more for our pastorate to be a community of welcome and outreach, I have met over ten persons
new to our area or new to one of our parishes in just the past two months, most of whom are young adults. Also, in working
with our confirmation retreat team, they realized the importance of incorporating prayer not just during the retreat but as part
of the preparation process. This expanded the notion of who is on the team to all of us in the pastorate who can offer extra
prayer specific for our youth preparing for this important sacrament.
Just as today’s gospel story of the transfiguration was a way Jesus was reminding his disciples that they would ultimately
share in his heavenly glory, so we enact this belief when we offer ourselves more fervently in prayer, lift others up to the Jesus,
God’s beloved son, and then listen to him.
a escucharlo.

CONFIRMATION RETREAT
On Friday, March 5th, from 4:00-10:00 PM our Confirmation Students from across the Pastorate will gather at St. Cecilia for a
Retreat. Our Youth will spend the evening reflecting on this passage in Scripture:
1 Peter 1: 13 "Set your hopes completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ."
We are asking for prayers from everyone as we prepare for this retreat and the encounter with Christ that they will experience.
In the church entry, you will find a flyer with an attachment. We would like for you, our Prayer Angels, to pray intentionally for
our Youth. Please write your name and your sacrificial prayer for them on the attached praying hands cut-out. Examples
include, but not limited to; praying the rosary each day leading to the retreat, praying 5 'Hail Mary's daily, or whatever you feel
called to pray. Return your praying hands to the collection basket this week. We will be using them to visually show the Youth
the love and support they have in our Pastorate. Let us pray that this group of over 30 High Schoolers will become and
continue to be 'A People of Hope'.
I Pedro 1, 13.
