THREE PILLARSNorth London Grammar School’s motto is ‘Bonitas, Scientia, Disciplina’ which is Latin for ‘Goodness, Knowledge, and Instruction’. These are the three pillars on which we build NLGS. They represent our aspirations for each and every one of our students.

Bonitas‘Bonitas’ means goodness, kindness, and excellence, three attributes that we want to instil in each of our students. Every child has a unique ability and it is our job to help them to make the most of it. At the same time, we want to teach tolerance, understanding, and respect for every person.

Scientia‘Scientia’ means knowledge and is the root for our modern word ‘science’. We want to give our students knowledge of the world around them, but more importantly give them the tools to find knowledge themselves. Logic, rationality, and critical thinking are central to our philosophy.

Disciplina‘Disciplina’ means instruction and teaching, but also contains the sense of the modern word ‘discipline’. Our school exists to provide teaching and training so that students can gain knowledge and achieve excellence. This process includes learning discipline, not just obeying the rules, but also self-discipline: knowing how to conduct yourself, stay focused, and ask questions.

As it is an honour for any school to be responsible for educating a young person, North London Grammar School is dedicated to providing a safe, caring and aspirational environment for each child to promote their academic and personal development in a rich, nurturing and protected climate.

Parents choose our School because we select our students to promote positive behaviour for the pursuit of excellence in every child. As a result, our students feel very secure and supported in their academic development. This encourages their personal motivation and self-confidence to become the best they can be.

North London Grammar is a very happy and successful school where all pupils and staff are valued, respected and cherished to create a positive culture where the learning and teaching experience is inspiring, creative, supportive and very rewarding.

The high expectations of all staff and governors, close monitoring of individual student’s progress and the wholehearted support from parents, all play a key role in our successful school.

We are extremely proud of our School and warmly invite you to share our experience by becoming part of our community.

North London Grammar School is an independent, non-denominational, modern grammar school, focussing on Mathematics and Science delivered within a strong Information Technology framework with the latest equipment for immersive and dynamic teaching.

Our students use tablets in their lessons independently or in conjunction with the Interactive TV Board available in each classroom to extend the interactive activity of each lesson.

When a student arrives at North London Grammar School, they will be allocated a tutor group which will be led by a Form Tutor who stays with the tutor group for the duration of the Lower School. This allows the Form Tutor to build a happy, secure and supportive relationship with their group and with the parents, fostering achievement throughout these formative years at our school. When students join the Upper School they are fully supported by an expert team of specialist tutors. The Form Tutors support and guide students through the rigours of GCSE and A Level examinations and play a key role in university admissions and career guidance.

Hitting the ground running

NLGS has a well-crafted and far-reaching transition programme, working very closely with primary schools to ensure that each child has a smooth transition from primary to secondary education. Most students entering NLGS will have already worked closely with our staff during the summer term before beginning secondary education in September. New students will be supported and nurtured throughout the entire transition process through a variety of exciting lessons, after-school activities, and whole-school events.

Parents and the Community

At North London Grammar School, we know that to get the best results for students we need to work alongside parents and carers so they support and encourage students in their school work. Parents will be able to monitor learning through the student’s diary and Virtual Learning Environment ensuring full attendance and will also attend Parents’ Evenings to learn more about how they can make a positive difference to their child’s development and achievement.

A detailed end-of-term report is sent to parents outlining their child’s progress. Parents are then invited to school three times per year to allow them to have an in-depth discussion with their child’s Form Tutor about progress and any areas for improvement.

Our school is at the heart of the local community and local people. Business and local groups are encouraged to build strong links with the school that go beyond education. We run initiatives to raise money for charity and invite local members of the community to speak to our students during assemblies, and to watch our concerts and plays.

Parents are the most important part of every child’s education and will be at the heart of our school community

Getting the Best from EveryoneRaising achievement by learning together and being there for each other

We have a strong school community, underpinned by our 4 Houses. We have a dedicated pastoral team responsible for the wellbeing and care of our students.

The pastoral team is supported by committed teachers and support staff who work with students on a daily basis, providing the help and guidance needed to develop healthy, happy students who are equipped to succeed in all aspects of the school, as well as life beyond.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITYWe have high expectations of all our students and support them in their education, personal and social development. They will be encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning and are expected to have the highest standards of behaviour, attendance, appearance and achievement.

The progress of each student is regularly monitored and reported home to parents with a clear system of rewards and sanctions underpinning our approach.

Students at North London Grammar School run their own School Council, which will feed ideas and information into a Governor Committee influencing decision-making at the highest level. The School Council is comprised of two democratically elected representatives from each year group at the start of each academic year. The responsibility structure for students provides opportunities for them to lead colleagues in a number of ways in every year group. A Student Council meeting takes place once every month.

VOLUNTEERINGFrom Year 10 onwards, our Volunteer Project gives students that chance to gain nationally recognised awards for voluntary activities that promote Citizenship.

We are proud to offer a balanced and evolving curriculum at Post 16. The AS and A-Level courses that we offer enable students to develop their talents for particular subjects studied at GCSE, whilst exploring new courses of interest, thus allowing for plentiful higher education and career paths to be followed. Subjects that are currently offered at AS and A-level include; Art, Biology, Chemistry, English Literature, Geography, Mathematics, Further Maths and Physics.

We offer many fantastic opportunities for high achieving students at Post 16, such as visits to Oxford and Cambridge and other Russell Group Universities, as well as residential and day master classes for certain subjects.

We recognise that Post-16 students are maturing into young adults, which is why we involve the student in every stage of their Sixth Form education. Students formally meet their teachers once a term for a review of their progress, and together both student and teacher set targets and explore how these goals can be achieved. In addition there are consultation evenings with parents so that progress is monitored and any issues can be swiftly resolved.

Preparation Courses

We offer students from across the world the ideal preparation for an independent school in the United Kingdom. In a small, supportive and caring community, we quickly come to know our students very well, giving them the skills, knowledge and support that they need to progress successfully into the mainstream.

Boys and girls from around the world spend one, two or three terms in our Pre-GCSE or Pre- A-level courses learning in small classes with up to 8 students before they enter the mainstream school at NLGS or another Independent school. Our students study English as a Foreign Language (EFL), IELTS, Mathematics, Science, ICT and Sport.

12-15 years old students who join our Pre-GCSE programme will be assigned an individual plan to progress to GCSE courses. Similarly, 15-17 years old students may join our Pre-A-Level programme with the intention of progressing to A-level courses.

At North London Grammar School, all international students taking A-level courses are also prepared for the Academic IELTS, which is specially designed for university entry. Universities usually require a minimum level 6.0 or 6.5 for entrance to study on degree courses. Our IELTS preparation courses are made up of intensive lessons focusing on the academic skills – reading, listening, speaking and writing in English – needed to gain the targeted score on the IELTS test.

All our teachers are EFL trained in addition to their own subjects. We understand the difficulties faced by children starting to study in English, and we give them all the help and support they need. We also offer academic and career advice on choosing the subjects and the next school.

Entry requirements for international students

Academic: Assessed on a case-by-case basis. We require school reports from the past two years, an interview and often an Entrance Test assessing cognitive abilities in areas of Maths, English and Non-Verbal. English Language: Pre GCSE: IELTS 4.0 or equivalent. GCSE: IELTS 5.0 or equivalent. Pre A-level: From IELTS 4.0 subject to start date. A-level: IELTS 6.0 or equivalent.
