It’s all here. Captivating natural beauty. World-class sports and recreation. Unique dining, shopping and lodging in distinctive towns and resorts. So much variety, you can fill your days with peak experiences.

Or tune it all down; find a cabin in the woods where the quiet is interrupted only by the wind in the trees. You can go as big or as relaxed as you and your crew desire in these mountains.

In the last 30 years, they’ve been joined by chefs specializing in California cuisine and other fine dining options. It’s easy to go casual here, too. You’ll find laid-back places serving everything from fish tacos and burritos to burgers and sushi.

Each season brings its own spectacular attractions. During winter, snow settles gracefully around the lake, spring brings wildflower meadows, summer warms beaches and streams, fall is color and quiet.

Whatever the season, now is the time to make your visit happen. The following pages will help you plan your vacation, while our website can help with planning and further details.

Summer in North Lake Tahoe

Visitors have been falling in love with Tahoe summers for a century and a half. Tahoe City was the gateway to Lake Tahoe from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, the well-to-do staying at the famous Tahoe Tavern resort or departing on steamboats to nearby lodges, marinas and estates.

What makes Tahoe summers so addictive? To start, practically perfect weather (in every way)— low humidity, sunny days and clear, starry nights. Days are warm but not hot, nights are cool and refreshing.

These Sierra forests are made for hiking, with miles of scenic trails. Parts of the Tahoe Rim Trail run through North Tahoe and include the spectacular Desolation Wilderness area and crestline, peak-topping routes.

The Flume Trail is one of the mountain biking world’s most famous rides, but it’s just part of the amazing network of single-track trails found here. For long, lift-served downhills, head to Northstar California’s Mountain Bike Park.

Prefer a paved route? Go for a relaxed ride on the scenic bike trail that runs along the Truckee River from Squaw Valley to Tahoe City. From there, the trail heads south along the West Shore to Sugar Pine Point State Park.

Lake Tahoe is a paradise of paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, jet-skiing, fishing and swimming. Marinas rent water equipment, set you skyward on a parasail or launch you on a cruise along the shoreline to Emerald Bay. To hook a huge mackinaw trout, take a fishing charter on a calm morning. Rafting the Truckee River is popular with all ages. Go it alone or with the help of one of the rafting companies conveniently located in Tahoe City.

Tahoe’s blue waters offer plenty of activity, but so do Tahoe’s greens. Golf courses include relaxed 9-hole circuits in Kings Beach and Tahoe City and championship courses in Incline Village, Northstar and Squaw Valley. Additional courses in Truckee and nearby Carson Valley feature the designs of world-renowned golf architects.

Whether it’s paddling along welcoming stretches of sun-soaked sand, toasting the day at a lakefront restaurant or enjoying an evening stroll under a brilliant, star-filled sky, summer days at North Lake Tahoe are much too special to be missed.

Winter in North Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe in winter, ringed by snow under a blue sky, is achingly lovely, the contrast made more brilliant by the lake’s deep blue. Spectacular winter weather creates this magic: plentiful sunshine paired with 20 to 30 feet of average annual snowfall.

Passion for winter sports runs deep here. Scandinavian prospectors brought skiing to these mountains in the 1850s, conducting America’s first organized ski races. On mountains just north of Tahoe, miners rode what is considered the world’s first ski lift—ore buckets hanging from a cable. The 1931 U.S. National Ski Jumping Championships were held in Tahoe City at the present site of Granlibakken Resort. Downhill ski resorts got their start here in 1939 with the opening of Sugar Bowl.

Skiing and other winter sports continued to thrive in North Tahoe, leading to the hosting of the 1960 Winter Olympic Games at Squaw Valley. Twenty-some years later, locals embraced what was the newest winter sport and built the world’s first snowboard half-pipe behind Tahoe City.

The Greater North Tahoe area now boasts 11 downhill ski and snowboard resorts and six cross-country ski/snowshoe areas. What makes all this variety even more intriguing is that each resort has its own distinct character.

Art & Culture in North Lake Tahoe

The music, theater and festival scene heats up during summer at North Lake Tahoe. A highlight is High Notes, a free concert series featuring rock, blues and jazz acts at scenic venues most every evening of the week. Lovers of classical music flock to Lake Tahoe SummerFest in Incline in early August; in mid-August, they enjoy concerts at various locations, from the West Shore to Truckee, during the Lake Tahoe Summer Music Festival. Crystal Bay Club has two showrooms featuring music and comedy, including jazz and blues headliners all year long.

Sand Harbor is the Sierra’s signature outdoor theater, a modern stage in a natural sand amphitheater with stunning lake views. In August, it hosts the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival—the Bard’s plays in rotation with special events and concerts.

Journey through history at Vikingsholm Castle in Emerald Bay, Ehrman Mansion at Sugar Pine Point State Park and Thunderbird Lodge near Incline Village. Tahoe City’s Gatekeepers Museum and Maritime Museum are open throughout the year.

Galleries in North Tahoe and Truckee display international and regional artists, with studio tours during summer. To experience the art of science, visit Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village, with interactive displays and 3-D movies that explore this area’s unique and spectacular environment.

Dining in North Lake Tahoe

Fine dining has a long tradition on these shores, dating back over 100 years to the great resort hotels of Tahoe’s Gilded Age. European chefs were first attracted to this area by the 1960 Winter Olympic Games, and new waves of culinary talent have established restaurants here ever since.

With California’s Central Valley, the national agricultural capital, only a few hours away, our chefs source some of the finest, freshest ingredients on earth—not to mention some of the world’s best wines from Napa Valley and Sierra Foothill vineyards.

If you’re seeking the basic satisfaction of a great burger or steak, fish taco or margarita, you’ll satisfy those cravings here, too. Or pull up a bar stool at one of many craft breweries and brew pubs. The North Lake Tahoe Ale Trail is an interactive map that pairs Tahoe’s best watering holes with nearby recreational trails and waterways. Hike, bike or paddle between sips of great brews.

Whatever your tastes, you’ll want to spend an evening dining or enjoying a cocktail at one of the many lakefront or lakeview restaurants. In summer, relax on an outdoor deck and enjoy the spectacular, fiery sunsets. When the snow falls, cozy up next to an indoor fireplace and take in the magical scene of twinkling lights through a windowpane.

Inspiring Incline Village

On Tahoe’s northernmost shore, this town got its name from the “Great Incline of the Sierra Nevada,” a device that carried timber over the mountains to construct the silver mines of Virginia City. The Flume Trail, today a world-renowned mountain bike trail, follows a route initially carved for a v-shaped timber flume.

Sand Harbor State Park is one of Tahoe’s scenic jewels. Its stage hosts the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and music concerts in summer. Stand-up paddling over the clear water and giant granite boulders is utterly unforgettable. Just down the shoreline, Thunderbird Lodge is a reflection in stone and timber of the eccentric millionaire who built it. Take an estate tour to explore its hidden tunnels and mountainside zoo.

Diamond Peak ski resort is above the town, a family-friendly spot with stellar beginner programs and panoramic views. Want to learn more about the Tahoe Sierra? The Tahoe Science Center is part of the UC Davis environmental research facility, with interactive science exhibits and engaging 3-D movies. A perfect way to end any day is a visit to Hyatt Regency Resort, Spa & Casino. At its lakeside Lone Eagle Grille, sip a cocktail at the end-of-the-pier bar during summer; in winter, have a hot toddy near the fireplace inside. Other fine dining options are close by or sprinkled around town.

Luminous Crystal Bay

Located on the California-Nevada border on North Shore, Crystal Bay has it all: from glittering casinos to hiking trails to beaches. A scenic and relatively short walk leads up 7,077 feet to the Stateline Fire Lookout, with one of the greatest 360-degree views in Tahoe. Here, signposts steer visitors on a self-guided tour through the history of the region, the stomping ground of Mark Twain and many lumber barons of the 1800s. Paragliders take off from here into the wind, landing nearby in Kings Beach.

Three casinos flank the road that passes through Crystal Bay, with a fourth, Cal Neva, out on the point. Once owned by Frank Sinatra, Cal Neva was one of America’s most illustrious hotels. It will capture its past glory when it reopens in 2016 after completing a multimillion-dollar renovation.

Tahoe Biltmore Lodge & Casino has a popular cafe and sportsbook; this and the adjacent property are slated for redevelopment into an exciting new Boulder Bay Resort over the next several years.

Crystal Bay Club is North Tahoe’s music central, with the Crown Room and Red Room Cabaret offering world-class rock, blues, jazz, comedy and, yes, dancing practically every night of the week. You’ll also find slots, gaming tables and sportsbooks here and at neighboring casinos. Dining choices abound at the casinos and at nearby establishments.

Noble Kings Beach

This quintessential beach town is located in the heart of Tahoe’s North Shore, with shops and street-side treasures to explore along its lakeside avenue.

The epicenter of activity is the Kings Beach State Recreation Area, once the estate of town founder (and card-shark) Joe King, who won the land where he would later start the town in a poker match. Ever since, this crescent of shoreline has been a safe bet for the millions who have visited.

Summertime fun includes weekend craft fairs and free concerts Friday evenings on the beach. There’s golfing at nearby Old Brockway links. Water equipment rentals abound—this is a perfect spot to take up paddleboarding, kayaking, jet skiing, parasailing or tandem paragliding.

Kings Beach is close to three downhill ski resorts and two cross-country areas with additional groomed trails just outside town in the regional park. Snowmobile tours leave from Brockway Summit just up the road.

When it’s time to relax, take a stroll along the town’s brand-new sidewalks, stop in at a unique shop or boutique, then sip a coffee on a patio or near the sand. Enjoy a casual meal or savor fine cuisine in one of the town’s many restaurants.

Vibrant Tahoe Vista / Cool Carnelian Bay

Ports of call for Tahoe’s steamships in the early 1900s, Tahoe Vista and Carnelian Bay are today ports of relaxation on this sandy stretch of shoreline. Here you’ll find excellent lodging values, some of them right on the lake, as well as a wide range of dining options.

Tahoe Vista’s beaches and shallow waters make it a favorite of swimmers and waders in summer and fall, while those with Fido in tow head for Carnelian Bay’s dog-friendly Patton Beach. Kayaking and paddleboarding are both popular on this long shoreline. Yachts and fishing boats sail in and out of Sierra Boat Company and North Tahoe marinas. In addition to water sports, there’s fine golfing at beautiful Old Brockway Golf Course, the site of the first Bing Crosby Pro-Am tournament (now the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am).

North Lake Tahoe Regional Park’s 124 acres include picnicking, playing fields and hiking trails as well as sledding and cross-country ski trails. Mountain bike trails provide quick access into the heart of a huge network of single-track and fire roads around and behind 8,420-foot Mt. Watson. Nordic skiing and snowshoeing trails are found at the Regional Park or Tahoe Cross Country resort, just up the road, and several resorts offering downhill skiing are close by.

Terrific Tahoe City

Before Tahoe City was Tahoe City, the native Washoe tribesmen called it “Daubey Odu”—roughly translated as “running over.” The Truckee River flows out of Lake Tahoe here, but the name also referred to the riches of fish and wild game found here. Today, the town “runs over” with energy and high-altitude fun year-round.

Tahoe City’s scenic shoreline is packed with year-round activities. In summer, kayakers and paddleboarders put in at Commons Beach and Tahoe City Marina. With the Truckee River’s headwaters located directly in Tahoe City, rafters and kayakers launch for a mild whitewater ride down the canyon. Commons Beach hosts free concerts and evening movies. Snow season brings the Tahoe City Winter Sports Park to the golf course, with cross-country skiing and snowplay. An extensive cross-country track network is just up the road at Tahoe Cross-Country Resort. Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows and Homewood ski areas are only a 10- to 15-minute drive away.

A short stroll through town takes you past unique shops and casual and fine-dining restaurants. Gatekeepers Museum has an excellent Native American basket collection, and the Tahoe Maritime Museum features gorgeous wooden boats. Cross historic “Fanny Bridge” over the Truckee headwaters and you’ll see how the bridge got its name: People lean over its rail to see the massive trout trolling the waters below.

Wonderful West Shore

In 1909, Arthur Jost built a small pier and hotel in a sheltered section of the lake under Ellis Peak. He called his friendly resort “Homewood, and all the name implies.” Today, that spirit of hospitality reigns along 21 miles of tree-lined shore, with bike paths and beaches to enjoy in summer and Homewood Mountain Resort in winter. (A local’s ski secret: The views from these slopes are among the best in the ski world.)

Three California State Parks are found along this spectacular stretch. Sugar Pine Point includes both campgrounds and the historic Ehrman Mansion and estate grounds. Nearby, cross-country ski trails from the 1960 Olympics are still groomed during the winter. Open summer months, Bliss State Park is one of Tahoe’s enchanted places, with its white-sand beach, boulders and cliffs. A lakeside trail goes all the way to Emerald Bay State Park, one of the world’s most photographed places. Tour Vikingsholm Castle in summer, or just admire Fannette Island and its stone teahouse.

Hiking trailheads can be found up and down the West Shore leading into National Forest lands or Desolation Wilderness. Or take a short hike to a unique view at Eagle Rock.

There’s fantastic fine dining along this stretch of lake, including at waterfront tables, indoor or out. A number of charming, small resorts offer rooms or separate cabins in the woods.

Majestic Squaw Valley / Alpine Meadows

One of the most picturesque valleys in the Sierra Nevada, Squaw Valley is legendary both for its beauty and skiing. Just over the mountain ridge is sister ski resort, Alpine Meadows, accessible on the same lift ticket or ski pass. Together, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows offer 6,000 acres of terrain for all abilities.

Now just a short 10-minute drive or shuttle ride apart, the resorts are slated to be connected in the future by a base-to-base gondola. Currently in year five of a $70 million renaissance, Squaw Valley/Alpine Meadows has the most modern lift system in America.

Stay slope-side at The Village at Squaw Valley for the ultimate in convenience. This lively European-style village is nestled at the base of ski runs with a variety of shops, galleries, restaurants and activities for the entire family. After a day on the slopes, cozy up at one of the many outdoor firepits. The Village offers events and music year-round. There are also a number of fine lodges and resorts adjacent to The Village at Squaw Valley and across a pristine meadow.

A bike trail follows the Truckee River from here to Lake Tahoe, while an aerial tram carries sightseers up 8,200 feet to High Camp and its swimming pools and hiking trails. Golfers will want to test the challenging holes at Squaw Creek Course.

Naturally the Village at Northstar

What was once a logging camp is today an idyllic vacation retreat, home to some of North America’s best family-centric skiing and riding. Boarders and skiers rocket down mile-long runs from the backside of Northstar California’s Mt. Pluto, or carve off-piste turns through stands of lodgepole pines from the top of Sawtooth Ridge. Where loggers built campfires in the 1800s, vacationers now curl up on comfy couches next to fire pits and a skating rink.

Northstar has long been a star of family vacations, with a self-contained village and everything within walking or ski-lift distance. The ski resort has impeccably groomed trails and some of the region’s top snowmaking capabilities. It features everything from first-timer and beginner terrain to a huge selection of intermediate runs and numerous terrain parks and halfpipes.

In summer, the ski lifts serve one of the West’s top mountain bike parks. Down in the valley, swimming pools or leisurely hikes might be more your style. Or tee off on an 18-hole masterpiece through aspen groves and out into Martis Valley.

Whatever diversions you choose, service is the hallmark here. It starts with world-class accommodations, both in Northstar Village’s rooms and suites, and mid-mountain at the Ritz Carlton, featuring a world-class spa, fine dining and uncompromised ambience.

Historic Truckee

Truckee was named after Pauite chief Tru-ki-zo by the pioneering emigrants he helped guide west. The town got its start with the construction of the Intercontinental Railroad in the 1860s and soon became infamous throughout the Old West. Things got more respectable with the launch of winter sports resorts here in the early 1900s. Today, Truckee maintains its railroad heritage while bursting over with great restaurants, bars, shops and year-round events and activities.

There are multiple lakes close to Truckee, with a spot on Donner Lake’s beaches the most coveted. The Truckee River runs through town, and more fish are biting on the many tributaries in mountains to the north. Likewise, there is golf in every direction—three public courses and four private links are in Truckee or minutes away. The town is surrounded by four major and three smaller ski resorts, plus three cross-country ski areas.

Donner Lake State Park and Museum is open year-round with new facilities and exhibits documenting the hardships faced by the pioneers who attempted to cross the Sierra Nevada.

After filling your days with fun and activity, take an evening stroll through Truckee’s downtown and its vintage buildings, shops and restaurants; or explore the newer sections of this booming burg.

Donner Summit

Site of an historic railroad engineering feat, this is a scenic land of snow-capped peaks, mountain lakes and hiking and skiing trails. In the 1860s, hundreds of workers tunneled through the solid granite of Donner Summit, often by hand, to build America’s first Intercontinental Railway. Old Highway 40 has views of the now-abandoned train tunnels and roughly follows the route taken by early settlers headed for the Pacific. Backdrop for many movies (most recently “Her”), Rainbow Bridge is a highlight of the drive. Nearby granite cliffs are well-known in rock-climbing circles.

Lodges and hostels dot the area. Near the summit, Sugar Bowl is California’s historic ski resort. Opened in 1939, it is a winter sports mecca with a charming lodge and excellent cross-country skiing. Cozy up to the bar where Hollywood royalty Errol Flynn and Charlie Chaplin tipped a few.

Boreal Mountain Resort has epic half-pipes, tubing and night skiing. Adjacent Woodward Tahoe is a trampoline and foam pit fun spot. Soda Springs is a small, value-oriented family ski area and tubing hill.

In summer, hike north and south on the Pacific Crest Trail or to a myriad of lakes and small reservoirs. The Yuba River travels through pools and waterfalls on its descent toward the Pacific Ocean. These mountains reward exploration with fantastic discoveries, any time of year.

Magnificent Meetings

North Lake Tahoe has a business aspect that surprises meeting and event planners. We’re a mountain destination with thousands of rooms and 200,000 square feet of meeting space, from unique and boutique to luxury brands like Ritz-Carlton and the Hyatt Regency. There are 30 distinct and complete meeting sites for events large to small, from the lake shore to the ski slopes.

The services we offer at North Lake Tahoe Convention and Visitors Bureau streamline your research and planning. We manage all the details; call or send us an RFP and we’ll turn around proposals from all major hotels within 24 hours. We provide hosted site visits, vendor referrals, support and services to ensure your success. A wide variety of spaces is available—from large to intimate—many of them “only in Tahoe” venues.

North Lake Tahoe is ideal for groups and team-building exercises, with every outdoor adventure and activity under the sun and numerous experienced caterers and rental services, outdoor guides and outfitters. We’re ranked the most accessible mountain destination in the Western U.S., with all major properties and venues approximately 45 minutes from Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

Inspiring I Do’s

You won’t find a more remarkable setting for your wedding or honeymoon. Lake Tahoe presides over ceremonies like no other natural wonder—a dream backdrop. To exchange vows on its shores brings a special distinction to the moment. Not to mention producing unforgettable photos. To see images of recent weddings, visit our Pinterest page at pinterest.com/tahoenorth/north-lake-tahoe-weddings.

North Lake Tahoe has been a popular wedding destination for decades. Many who marry here first visit as a guest at someone else’s wedding. That level of expectation has produced a full complement of experienced caterers, florists, musicians, photographers and rental services based in North Lake Tahoe or in nearby communities.

Both lakeshore and mountain wedding sites abound in North Lake Tahoe, some of them connected to lodging properties. Chapels and other places of worship are available. Or you may prefer to defy convention with a wedding aboard a cruise boat.

Ultimate locations for ceremonies include historic sites such as Thunderbird Lodge and Ehrman Mansion and lakefront venues like the North Lake Tahoe Event Center or Gatekeepers Museum.

Visit GoTahoeNorth.com/weddings to get started creating your dreams.
