Figure out what you likeA good way to start your career discovery is to make a list of activities you’ve enjoyed in your school, work, and personal life. For example, you might find that you enjoyed meeting new people, solving problems, or working on your own. Some people feel like they have no interests, while others are overwhelmed with too many to narrow down. The key is to get to know yourself first.

Think about what you’re good atWhether it’s helping a friend program their phone, fixing your bike, or organizing a week of dinners for your family, everybody is good at something. The things we do quickly and easily on a daily basis are good indicators of the skills we may want in a future career. Make your own list or ask your friends or family for ideas.

Consider what matters to you most in lifeJust because you’re good at something doesn’t always mean that you will enjoy doing that activity for a living. For some people, their work lifestyle is more important than the work itself. For example, do you prefer working with people or being alone at a computer? Do you want a daytime schedule rather than evening shift work? These types of decisions can help lead you to your best-suited careers.

Contrary to popular belief, there are many perfect careers out there for you—not just one. Once you have a clear idea of your interests, skills, and values, then you can begin searching and narrowing down your options. For example, you may be interested in Health Care programs. Next, take a look at all the possibilities in that field (physician, nurse, veterinarian, pharmacist, etc.). As you explore each option further, you can begin comparing the advantages and disadvantages each career has to offer.
