the classroom:
Mirabel Saakyan and Sarah Swihart have qualified as finalists in the 2018

Congratulations to Vincent Catanzaro and Cameron Walter who won the Section

In the Library
7:00 pm
Our next PTSA meeting is Monday, March 5, 2018, in the library, at 7:00 pm.
On Monday February 5th, Williamsville East hosted the Tri-High PTSA meeting.
We want to thank Officer Paul Anderson for taking time to speak to our attending
Williamsville parents. The information he provided was eye-opening! He
educated us on the drug issues that are facing our children and what we as parents
need to be aware of. Thank you, Paul, for all the valuable information!
PTSA MEMBERSHIP Still not a PTSA member? Why not? Our PTSA and volunteers work hard
every day to make a difference in your student’s school life. PTSA membership
is a one-time monetary way for you to show your support. Membership is only
$7 for adults and $5 for students. Becoming a member of the North PTSA is easy
with the ability to pay online with your credit card at:
https://nyspta.force.com/NewMemberRegistration?unit=19-390 . You can also
find our membership form at www.williamsvillek12.org, click on North High
School under “Our Schools” then click on PTSA 2017-2018, then the link for
the Membership Form.
STORE VOLUNTEER Our school store has over 92 staffers! However, we still need more volunteers.
It is a wonderful way to get involved with the school community, meet other
parents, say hello to your students, and help raise money to fund our annual
scholarships, post-prom, and other initiatives. As a newcomer, you will receive
training from a seasoned volunteer. Please contact Sue Sniatecki at
[email protected] (or text 208-4978) if you can help. We greatly
appreciate your support! – And we love Grandparent volunteers!
DASH’S RECEIPTS Please remember to save your Dash’s receipts and send them into the school
store. Through Dash’s charitable giving, our PTSA earns 2.5% of total receipts.
This is a simple way for our PTSA to raise funds for our students.

WILLIAMSVILLE SEPTSA
The Williamsville school district has an active PTSA, that includes a Special
Education PTSA unit. One of only four in WNY, WCSD SEPTSA provides
guidance, information, advocacy, direction, and support for parents of students
with disabilities and those that excel. SEPTSA has monthly programs with
local topic experts that address current trends and topics, lunch and dinner
informal gatherings providing parents an opportunity to discuss items of
importance, extensive books, resource materials and information, networking
and outreach, and connections to local programs and service providers.
Please watch for the upcoming flyer for our next evening program to be held
on Thursday, February 15, 2018. The presenter will be Mr. Dave Whalen,
President of Williamsville SEPTSA and adjunct professor at Niagara
University. He will be speaking on the topic of person-centered planning and
transitioning from high school to adult life. The goal of independent living will
be explored through the integration and collaboration of various resources
including the individual, the family, the school, support systems and the
community. Advocacy and self-determination will be explored and
emphasized as a means to individual success.

COLDS AND SCHOOL ATTENDANCE According to the web site, “Mayoclinic.com”, this is one of the most
common reasons children miss school. The average adult has 2-4
colds per year. The single most important thing your child can do
to prevent illness is to wash his or her hands thoroughly and
frequently. Coughs should be covered with a tissue and discarded.
Touching common objects with infected hands, or
coughing/sneezing out into the open air spreads germs more quickly.
Children may come to school if they are fever free, can eat and drink
normally, are rested and alert enough to be attentive in class, and
have completed any medically recommended isolation period.
WHAT IS EPISTAXIS? What causes nosebleeds? The purpose of the nose is to warm and
humidify the air we breathe in. The nose is lined with many blood
vessels that lie close to the surface where they can be injured and
bleed. Once a vessel starts to bleed, the bleeding tends to recur
since the clot or scab is easily dislodged. Nosebleeds, called
epistaxis, can be messy and even scary, but often look worse than
they are. Many can be treated at home, but some do require
medical care.
Common causes of nosebleeds include:
- Dry, heated, indoor air, which dries out the nasal membranes
- Dry, hot, low humidity climate, which can dry out the mucous
membranes
- Vigorous nose blowing or nose picking
- Injury to the nose or face
- Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
- Use of drugs that thin the blood (aspirin, non-steroidal anti-
inflammatory medications, warfarin and others)
- High blood pressure
- Chemical irritants (e.g. cocaine, industrial chemicals)
- Deviated septum
- Inherited bleeding disorders
- Facial and nasal surgery
How are nosebleeds stopped?
- Relax
- Lean your body and head slightly forward so you don’t swallow
blood
- Breathe through your mouth
- Pinch together the soft part of your nose against the hard bony
ridge that forms the bridge of your nose
- Continue pinching your nose continuously for at least five
minutes before checking if bleeding has stopped
- Ice can be applied to nose to hasten clotting
- Once the bleeding stops do not bend over, lift heavy objects,
sniff or blow your nose
Seek medical care if bleeding continues after more than 20 minutes
of applying direct pressure, you experience repeated bleeding
episodes and if the bleeding is rapid, or the blood loss is large
(exceeds a coffee cupful).
NURSE’S NOTES
continued….
SPRING IS HERE Don’t forget to have your physical in for spring sports which must
be dated March 1, 2017 or later. Sport forms must be signed by the
nurse to verify physical fitness before going to the first tryout.
Remember to register in WITS under the Athletics tab and sign up
for your spring sport BEFORE you bring in your forms to the nurse.
Sports Verification started Monday, February 26th, MODS 2-9
ONLY! If you currently have a Physical education restriction these
must be cleared by your doctor before returning to sports. Don’t get
caught on the bench!
TOBACCO FACTS
By age 17, one half of teen smokers have tried to quit and
failed. Two thirds regret ever starting and nearly 40% express
some interest in some form of treatment for tobacco
dependence.
Nicotine withdrawal causes decreased attention span, which
may affect your student’s academic performance.
Second hand smoke has TWICE as much nicotine and tar as
the smoke the smoker inhales.
Teens are more likely to smoke if they see adults smoke.
Smoking related illness kills more people than alcohol, AIDS,
car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides COMBINED!
For help and information about quitting call 1-866-697-8487,
the NYS Smokers’ Quitline or go to www.nysmokefree.com.
