COACHING COURSES RugbySmart
All coaches, assistant coaches, managers and technical advisors who are involved with teams from Secondary School Rugby upwards (Under 14 and above) are required to attend a RugbySmart each year. The NZRU and ACC combined course is compulsory so that you are aware of the safety needs of your players. As well as the safety and injury prevention components of RugbySmart it is an excellent resource for coaches of all levels. The course and takeaway DVD provides coaching tips and safe techniques for your players. There are RugbySmart courses run as part of other courses e.g. the NZRU Coaching Teenage (College) Rugby course or the Associate Referee course. If you are unable to attend the RugbySmart specific course, check the calendar in the NHRU Handbook for these other courses to find out when RugbySmart is being run. RugbySmart is also part of the Level 1 DRC NZRU adult rugby coaching course. NZRU Coaching Small Black Rugby
These courses are an entry level for junior rugby coaching from Rippa (Under 6) to J1 (Under 13). NZRU policy makes this course compulsory and is to be attended by all coaches and assistant coaches of these age grades. Each course is two hours and includes theory and practical sessions. The interactive practical session is split into the three grades for Small Black Rugby:
NZRU Beginning Rugby – Rippa Rugby J7 & J8 (Under 6 & 7)
NZRU Learning Rugby – J5 & J6 (Under 8 – 10)
NZRU Playing Rugby – J1 to J4 (Under 11 – 13) Each course provides basic principles for coaching and skills required to coach at these levels. By completing a NZRU Coach Registration form you will receive free resources and access to the NZRU Coaching Toolbox website. The Tackle Box – is a workshop for coaches and players in the J5 (Under 8) grade. This grade is tackling for the first time so the workshop focuses on tackle techniques of your players and how you can coach key elements of the tackle. NZRU Coaching Secondary School Rugby

In North Harbour we encourage every junior team to have their own registered Associate Referee. We see this important as it enables the coach to enhance the junior players understanding of the Principle of the Laws. It also allows the coach to enjoy his or her role more without the extra responsibility of refereeing games. The Associate Referee Course is designed to provide the basic technical knowledge and practice officiate a game from J8 (Under 6) through to Under 21. The course takes approximately 2½ hours and participants will receive the NZRU Small Blacks and Domestic Safety Law Variations booklet plus a RugbySmart DVD. Since this course enables participants to referee grades above J1 (Under 13), that is Year 9 secondary school (Under 14) to Under 21 in North Harbour it is compulsory for participants to complete RugbySmart. Attending any of the other scheduled RugbySmart courses will cover you for the Associate Referee course. Attendance of this course enables you to be registered as an Associate Referee for 3 years, providing RugbySmart is attended each year within the 3 years. You are not required to register for this course, just check the calendar for the dates and times. If you have any questions about this course contact Greg Watson at [email protected]

College Referee Student Course – NZQA Level 3, 10 credits
The course not only provides year 12 and 13 students with an opportunity to become further educated in the game of rugby, but we encourage them to take up refereeing as a sport. Past students have developed into excellent referees officiating at the top levels of the game. The content of the course meets the requirements for the following NZQA standards:
Unit Title Level Credits
20673 Apply knowledge of injury prevention and management of sport or physical reaction
3 4
20674 Apply fundamental sport rules and regulations at a junior or beginner level
3 6
Those who successfully complete the 2 units are credited and receive a certificate from the NZRU. There are 2 courses run, the first in the end of first term school holidays and the second in the first week of term 2. Participants must register through their school by speaking with the Teacher in Charge of Rugby. If you would like any further information contact Greg Watson at [email protected] North Harbour Rugby Referees Association (NHRRA) Affiliated Referee
Some people who are already been Associate or student referees become Affiliated referees joining the Association. Many others finish playing or are simply keen to take on refereeing and sign-up with the Association. The NHRRA provides refereeing training and coaching to anyone whatever their aspirations. The first time referees have their own tuition classes and coaching. If you want more information on how to get started in refereeing contact Greg Watson at [email protected] or Jim Kane, the NHRRA Secretary at [email protected] For information including content, venue dates and times go the NHRRA website at www.nhrra.org.nz Referees are available to attend team trainings during the season – at any level. We recommend that coaches take advantage of this opportunity to have a referee at some of you trainings. It provides players and coaches with a better understanding of the laws of the game and their interpretation. It is also a great opportunity for referees to mix with clubs and gain a better understanding of what teams are endeavouring to achieve on the field. If you would like a referee to come along to trainings please contact Greg Watson at [email protected] or 027 683 9411.
