TESTING DATA
Micron tests displayed in the catalogue are taken from mid side samples collected from the rams during the first week in June. We suggest that growers use wool test results as a guide. Factors such as environment and seasonal conditions and the amount of feed given can vary the micron results. We recommend a ‘hands on’ approach when selecting rams and consideration of other indicators such as flock averages.
Explanation of Testing Terminology used in the Catalogue:
SD - Standard deviation is a measure in microns either side of the mean fibre diameter in which 68% of fibres lie.
CV% - Coefficient of Variation of the fibre diameter is expressed as a percentage of standard deviation and mean fibre diameter.
CF - 0% of fibres above 30 micron = 100% Comfort Factor, eg. 3% of fibres greater than 30 micron = 97% Comfort Factor (CF).
CURVE - Is the Mean Fibre Curvature measured in degree per mm of fibre length. The LOWER the angle, the LOWER the crimp frequency.
Testing and terminology provided by Riverina Fleece Testing Services.
All rams brucellosis accredited.
PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
On behalf of the North East Merinos stud breeders, I would like to welcome you to our 23rd Annual Benalla Ram Sale.
What sets the merino apart from other sheep breeds is the quality of their wool. For many years the price paid for wool hovered well below its worth. In the past two years we have seen a gradual rise in the price of wool and in June 2018, a record EMI of 2073c/kg was set. It is definitely a great time to be in the merino industry, and those who have stuck with it are being rewarded. I wonder if we will see wethers being run on tough country again? To compliment the wool, more emphasis is being placed on the carcase traits of the modern “all purpose” merino and is opening up lamb markets as well. With both sides of the merino attracting good financial return it makes for a very profitable animal.
I would like to thank our major sponsors Elders for their continued support in our sale. I would also like to thank our minor sponsors for their contributions which are greatly appreciated. Thank you to Jake Burey, our new scanner for the All Purpose section, and Kirsty Taylor and Katrina McCracken for judging the sale rams for the All Purpose competition. Thank you to Coprice for their donation for the winner of the All Purpose Ram and Chemvet for donating product to the Champion Wool Ram of the sale.
Finally, thank you to our members for the time and effort put into this sale, and the presentation of their rams.
Thank you for supporting our sale and to all potential bidders I wish you the best of luck on the day.

Objectives:
(i) To highlight the all purpose attributes of the Australian merino by combining objective and visual assessments for both wool and meat characteristics. Reproductive related traits of wrinkle, face cover and testicle size also to be taken into consideration.
(ii) To identify the young Australian merino rams with the best combination of superior wool, carcase and reproductive attributes.
(iii) To select these rams with short wool to assist carcase evaluation, and with lambs or two teeth to reflect the commercial relevance in the industry where premiums exist for young sheep.
Eligibility: Short wool (March or August shorn or minimum 4 months wool growth) merino rams, horned or polled, not showing more than 2 teeth that conform to the AASMB definition of Australian Merino. Fine, medium and strong wool classes to be judged separately or as one. Likewise, lambs teeth and two teeth rams.
Guidelines: A maximum point score of 100 is to be divided equally, with 25 points for objective carcase measurements, 25 points for objective fleece sample measurements, 25 points for visual carcase judging and 25 points for visual wool judging. The Champion and Reserve Champion All Purpose Australian Merino are chosen by two judges from the three highest point scores.
Points Allocation:Objective Carcase WT 10 FAT 7.5 EMD 7.5 =25Objective Wool FD 10 SD 7.5 CF 7.5 =25Visual Carcase Structure 5 Quality 20 =25Visual Wool Structure 5 Quality 20 =25
We also award the title of Champion Wool sale ram to the animal with the highest points score for wool. This ensures that the all important wool attributes of the Australian merino are retained and recognized.

Rams are Vet checked & tested Brucellosis free.Bennmann merino stud was founded in 2005 and registered in 2008, following the purchase of 50 stud ewes and a number of stud rams from Bindawarra Stud.
At Bennmann, we are following the footsteps of previous generations of wool growers. Heading into the fifth Bennett generation, we have the extraordinary privilege of being able to continue the process of delivering one of the earth’s finest fibres.
We are understandably proud of the tradition of excellence that we have inherited and want to continue to enrich and develop. We know that merino wool is unique and we are passionate about breeding the ultimate quality fleece. Our aim at Bennmann is to breed highly sustainable and extremely desirable wool breeding sheep with an emphasis on soft, bold crimping white wools on a meaty frame. This has led us into breeding poll rams which shows our increasing objective to provide growers with a broader choice of options. We believe that future market trends are developing towards a dual purpose animal with more profitable income returns through the strong combination of meat and wool.
Recent acquisitions of two rams from Moorundie Poll at their On Property Sale, will enhance our overall body size and constitution within our flock. 16 stud ewes were also purchased from Moorundie Poll, Keith in Dec 2017 to add to our increasing nucleus. These new additions along with Woodpark Poll and Poll Boonoke stud rams are adding a comprehensive foundation to our genetics.

Steve & Lisa purchased the Bindawarra Merino Stud (Est. 1963) in December 2011 from Murray and Janet Toland and relocated the stud from the high country at Cobungra to the Gippsland coastal plains at Giffard West, mid-way between Sale and Yarram, running the stud on a separate property to their successful commercial flock. Bindawarra has built an enviable reputation as a leading stud for commercial woolgrowers with many clients selling their clips at consistently above average rates, enabling them to maintain profitable businesses.
The distinctive wool type of the Bindawarra Merino is a long stapled, deep crimping, soft handling, bright, white wool. A number of years of successful AI programs have resulted in many fine young poll and horned rams from leading sires. Poll ewes have recently been purchased from both Middle View and Southrose stud dispersal sales.
Bindawarra Merino genetics continue to perform well in the top end of the Sire Evaluations over the last 15 years, when benchmarked against other leading studs. Bindawarra 400 recently ranked 1st in the Merino Production index (MP+), 1st in the Fibre Production index (FP+) and 3rd in the Dual Purpose index (DP+) in a Merino Superior Sires evaluation. Bindawarra 400, and his progeny, are among the leading sires in our breeding program. Clients have consistently performed well in wether production trials also. Bindawarra fleeces are regularly entered into local and national competitions, with highlights being prizes at the Australian Sheep and Wool Show and the Royal Melbourne Show.
Previous owner, Murray Toland, is still involved as stud advisor and his selection emphasis for rams will be continued with the traits of fertility, constitution, doing ability and easy care characteristics prominent. Renowned sheep classer Murray Elliot has been instrumental in working with Murray in developing this wool type over a long period of time.
Bindawarra are committed to breeding quality sires that will allow clients to breed for future requirements. Breeding emphasis has focussed on plainer bodied sheep without compromising wool quality or quantity.
Bindawarra Merinos are well placed to give the discerning buyer a solid future in a challenging wool market.

Hynam Poll Merinos was established with the purchase of stud ewes from a dispersal at Karoonda SA in 1988. Hynam Poll Merinos aim to produce dual purpose meaty framed sheep with soft elite wool. Based initially on large SA bloodlines, recent infusions from Wallaloo Park, Glenlea Park, Gunallo. Ridgeway, Forest Springs and Kamarooka Park have continued to maintain our adult sheep under 20 micron, cutting 7-8kg.
Our rams perform successfully throughout the Mallee, Western District, Central and Southern VIC, and Southern NSW and we will be offering rams at Bendigo, Hamilton, Benalla and Murray Bridge multi-vendor sales as well as on property private selections.
At Hynam Poll Merinos, we aim to provide affordable quality and service.

KILFEERA PARK HISTORYKilfeera Park was founded in 1971 by DJ McKenzie. The stud was originally based on Hazeldean blood and in 1979 Wonga blood was introduced. An AI program commenced in 1988 using semen Roseville Park. From this point on, Kilfeera Park has continued to use Roseville Park as there main genetic source, with infusions from Glendonald (Purple family) and Moutere (NZ). In1997, a share in a Merryville ram (MV 1693) was purchased, while in 2000 & 2004 the stud purchased sires from Wurrook, and semen from two leading sires at Wurrook, in 2001. 2003 saw the stud purchase two Roseville Park sires from their Purple Family, including another in 2005 and 2 more in 2008.
A new family called CLASSIC D.C was formed in 2000. This family is a Roseville Park/ Merryville cross, which is proving to be a very successful mix. This family excels in producing deep crimping (DC) wools with low microns and superior handling ability (Elite). The year 2000 saw the stud embark on the use of Performance Testing using Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). These values will predict more closely the individual’s true genetic worth, and allow the stud to be benchmarked, not only within, but also externally. Kilfeera Park is a member of Sheep Genetics (SG), using Australian Sheep Breeding Values (ASBV's).
Kilfeera Park is one of the oldest North East studs, under the management of Murray & Fiona McKenzie. It produces medium/fine wool, bred in an average rainfall of 750 mm (30 inches). Our aim is to breed sheep that exhibit soft, supple skins, which produce wool that is superior in style and handle, whilst maximizing size and weight.

Koole Vale was founded in 1995 with ewes from Woolaroo and a ram from Billa Burra Burra Stud. Since 1999 Glendonald has been a big influence with the introduction of ewes, rams and semen. An annual AI program is conducted using top rams that suit our operation. In 2002 a Poll stud was formed with Glendonald genetics, a ram from Weealla and semen from Nyowee has been added with success.
Our aim is to produce a versatile merino with a Fine-Medium/Medium wool type that is white, stylish and heavy cutting. Our rams are sold across Victoria into high and lower rainfall districts.
We benchmark our sheep by showing at major sheep shows as well as fleece shows and wether trials. We have won the most valuable fleece at Royal Melbourne Show 6 times, Champion Medium Ram & Ewe at Hay and Hamilton sheep shows and placed 2nd at the 2013 Ovens Valley wether trial cutting 8.71kg of 19.3 micron. We topped the Bendigo sheep market ewe section with $166 in May 2017.
Our 2nd on property ram sale will be held on 11th October 2017 where we will offer 36 Merino/Poll Merino Rams and 14 White Suffolk rams.

Wirrate Merino Stud was established in 1987 with the purchase of 80 Wallaloo Park ewes and 1 stud ram. We have used Wirrate and Wallaloo Park sires almost exclusively, both in our stud, and commercial ewe flock which was established in 1981. This has created a pure bloodline which ensures our commercial growers get a predictable outcome and consistent progeny type.
The Wirrate breeding program has created an animal which is producing a high quality industrial processing fibre for next to skin wear. This elite wool quality, combined with a large framed, plain bodied sheep is the prototype of the modern Australian merino. Using Wirrate rams can help the commercial grower to minimize risk, by breeding both a wool and meat producing animal. Recent additions of Poll sires have furthered this by breeding an early maturing type which allows clients to increase profitability by meeting the high demand for sheep meat.

Pregnancy Test for Profit
Farm profits are sensitive to how breeding stock are managed
The ultimate goal of managing breeding livestock is to maximise profits and minimise costs.
3 Remove non-breeding or slow cycling stock
3 Re-join non pregnant stock as soon as possible and save money
3 Identify twins to significantly increase profits
3 Livestock that wean twins will need extra help to recover after weaning to be able to twin again next joining
Pregnancy testing allows you to make informed management decisions and takes out the guess work.
Even if a farmer’s livestock has a history of high fertility, detecting one poor joining can cover a lifetime of
scanning. In most cases a farmer will be able to recover the cost of scanning from the results detected from
Pregnancy Testing anyway.
Did you know we also pregnancy scan cattle?
