BISON MEN’S BASKETBALL ’05-06 34 The Season Review North Dakota State Caps 11-Game Winning Streak With National Independent Title, Finishes First D-I Season 16-12 The 2004-05 men’s basketball season was the second year of North Dakota State’s five-year transition to full Division I membership. No longer members of Division II and the North Central Conference, NDSU played at Drake in their second of two exhibition games and had 11 regular-sea- son games against nine other Division I teams—three with fellow provisional team South Dakota State. NDSU filled out the rest of its slate mostly with regional Division II, Division III and NAIA schools, a collection that the Bison posted a 15-2 record against. The Division I portion of the schedule was more difficult. With only nine roster players for most of the season—and, at times, only seven or eight men dressed— the Bison frequently found themselves outmatched. NDSU was 1-10 against D-I teams and finished the year 16-12 overall. North Dakota State’s five-game losing skid over the holiday break to Division I teams Eastern Michigan, Oakland, Wis- consin-Green Bay, Rider and Manhattan was an up-and-down road. NDSU played Eastern Michigan to the final seconds, was tight with Wisconsin- Green Bay into the closing minutes, but suffered blowout losses in the other three matchups. After a home win over Concordia- Moorhead and road losses to UMKC and South Dakota State, the Bison were six games under .500. North Dakota State needed to win 10 of its 12 remaining games to secure a winning record. NDSU started strong with four straight home wins over Dakota Wesleyan, Southwest Minnesota State, Minnesota- Crookston and Northern State. A win at Minnesota-Crookston and three more home victories over Si Tanka- Huron, Mayville State and Upper Iowa gave the Bison eight straight wins and a 13-11 mark, but the job was not done. After winning the National Indepen- dent Tournament opener against Central State, the Bison faced rival South Dakota State for a shot at their first Division I win and a chance to lock up a winning season. Behind the 21 points and six rebounds and five assists of forward Myron Green, NDSU picked up a 75-55 win over the Jackrabbits, advanced into the champion- ship game, and improved to 15-11 with only two games to play. The spotlight again belonged to Green in the title game. He recorded his second career double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds as the Bison beat tournament host Florida Gulf Coast 74-70 in overtime. One week later, South Dakota State defeated the Bison 68-57 in front of more than 6,000 fans at the Bison Sports Arena in the season finale. The Jackrabbits won the season series two games to one. Bison Run K-State to the Wire Before Sixth Largest Road Crowd in NDSU History The crowd of 9,065 that watched the season-opener between North Dakota State and Kansas State at Bramlage Coli- seum in Manhattan, Kan., on Nov. 19 was the sixth largest recorded road attendance figure in NDSU history. The top five marks all occurred at the University of Minnesota, the largest being a draw of 17,500 on Nov. 30, 1974. North Dakota State took a 29-23 lead at halftime to put a damper on the Kansas State home opener, but the taller Wildcats controlled the backboards and hit 5 of 8 three-pointers in the second half to clinch a 70-61 come-from-behind victory. Kelchen, Bison Win Triple-OT Thriller vs. Minn.-Duluth North Dakota State’s triple-overtime win over Minnesota-Duluth on Dec. 15 was the second-longest game in school history behind the 1958-59 win over Northern Iowa (109-107) that took six overtimes. That game still stands as a North Central Conference record for the most overtimes played in a game. Bison senior Andy Kelchen figured into all three overtime endings. He was there for a defensive rebound to end the first OT after a Duluth miss, his jumper with 18 seconds left in the second OT knotted the game at 78, and his two free throws in the last period held up as the winning shots after the Bison forced two turnovers and a miss. Kelchen also had a team- and career-high six assists in the game. Ice Cold Five Minutes Cost Bison a Win at Eastern Mich. Darryl Garrett’s jumper with 3:54 to play gave Eastern Michigan its first lead of the game as the Eagles defeated North Dakota State 60-58 on Dec. 18 at Bowen Field House in Ypsilanti, Mich. North Dakota State led by as many as 10 points in the first half and by nine on three occasions in the second half, but the Bison did not score after David Erbes’ jumper put NDSU up 58-55 with 5:11 remaining. Eastern Michigan caused two NDSU turnovers while the Bison missed six shots and four free throws in the last five minutes of play. NDSU led 32-29 at halftime and outrebounded the taller Eagles 34-30, but the Bison were 4-for-9 at the foul line while Eastern Michigan hit 13 of 17 foul shots. Forward Myron Green was NDSU’s leading scorer in 2004-05 with 16.2 points a game and the team’s second leading rebounder with 6.2 per game. He was named to the all-National Independent Tournament team and was an honorable mention to the Division I all-inde- pendent team. 2004-05 REVIEW

Bison Run K-State to the Wire Before Sixth Largest Road Crowd in NDSU History

The crowd of 9,065 that watched the season-opener between North Dakota State and Kansas State at Bramlage Coli-

seum in Manhattan, Kan., on Nov. 19 was the sixth largest recorded road attendance fi gure in NDSU history. The top fi ve marks all occurred at the University of Minnesota, the largest being a draw of 17,500 on Nov. 30, 1974. North Dakota State took a 29-23 lead at halftime to put a damper on the Kansas State home opener, but the taller Wildcats controlled the backboards and hit 5 of 8 three-pointers in the second half to clinch a 70-61 come-from-behind victory.

Center David Erbes was North Dakota State’s leading rebounder in 2004-05 with an average of 6.3 boards per game. He also was the school’s fi rst Academic All-American since Bison Hall of Famer Joe Regnier in 1989.

Perfect Combo With a nine-man active roster and, at times, only seven or eight men dressed to play, fi nding a starting lineup was not a diffi cult task for the Bison. However, there was one combination that worked particu-larly well. The starting fi ve of guards Brandon Smith and Adam Dobmeier, forwards Do-tun Obadina and Myron Green, and center Andy Kelchen put together an 8-0 record.

Hahn Steady at the Line Bison guard Phil Hahn proved to be North Dakota State’s best free-throw shooter in 2004-05, and two long consecu-tive free-throw streaks helped that cause. Hahn knocked down 19 straight free throws early in the season and 18 in a row later in the year. His fi rst streak included one free throw late at Denver, fi ve vs. Northern State and seven vs. Southwest Minnesota State on back-to-back nights, four at Northern State, and his fi rst two after being fouled by Jamestown while missing a 3-pointer. Later in the year, Hahn made eight at Minnesota-Crookston, two apiece against Si Tanka-Huron and Mayville State, and six

in a row against Upper Iowa before miss-ing his last two foul shots in that game.

Most Blocks in 12 Years North Dakota State center Andy Kelchen blocked 38 shots in 2004-05 and that was the most shots blocked by a Bi-son player in 12 years since NDSU record holder Jason Wenschlag swatted 58 shots in 1992-93. Two of Kelchen’s single-game efforts stand out. He turned back fi ve shots in the win over Mayville State and had a career-high six rejections against Minnesota-Crookston, one off the single-game record set by Wenschlag in 1990-91. He fi nished his career fi fth on the NDSU all-time charts with 74 blocks and eighth with 0.7 swats per game.

Bison Control Boards North Dakota State’s centers may have only been 6-foot-7 and 6-foot-5, but the Bison still controlled the rebounding game regularly throughout the season. NDSU outrebounded its opponent in 19 of the 28 games played. The plus-19 margin over Mayville State on Feb. 11 was NDSU’s largest advantage on the glass, and the minus-19 against South Dakota State in the season fi nale Feb. 26 was the largest opponent advantage. David Erbes, the 6-5 center, was North Dakota State’s top individual re-bounder in 11 games and led the team with a 6.3 average over the full season.

Streaking to the Finish North Dakota State’s 11-game winning streak late in the season was the 11th single-season winning streak of 10 or more games in school history. It also tied for the 11th longest win-ning streak in NDSU history and was the seventh longest by number of games. The most consecutive wins by a Bison squad is 26 from 1924-25 through 1925-26. In a single season, the most is 19 straight, accomplished in 1925-26 and tied twice over multiple seasons.

Erbes Named to Division IAcademic All-America Team North Dakota State center David Erbes was named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America University Division men’s basketball team selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. The selection criteria is based on both academic scholar, which includes at least

a 3.20 GPA, and athletic performance. In addition, the student-athlete must have reached sophomore standing athletically and academically. Erbes’ grade-point average of 3.88 in agricultural economics was the fi fth highest on the national honor team. He averaged 10.6 points and 6.3 rebounds while starting 17 of 27 games played. Erbes was the fi rst Bison selected to the Academic All-America team since Joe Regnier’s honor in 1989. He was one of fi ve fi rst-team Aca-demic All-District VII selections to advance to the national ballot. Earlier in the season, Erbes and teammate Andy Kelchen were voted to the Division I independent All-Academic team.

Three Bison EarnAll-Tournament Honors North Dakota State had three players pick up all-tournament honors in 2004-05. Guard Phil Hahn was named to the U.S. Bancorp Classic all-tourney team at Southwest Minnesota State, guard Adam Dobmeier was all-tourney at Wisconsin-Green Bay’s Oneida Bingo and Casino Classic, forward Myron Green was all-tour-ney at the National Independent Tourna-ment, and Dobmeier was named MVP of the independent tourney.

Hahn, Green EarnPlayer of the Week Honors Bison guard Phil Hahn won back-to-back Newcomer of the Week awards in Division I independent basketball, and forward Myron Green was co-Player of the Week after helping NDSU to the National Independent Tournament championship. Green later was an honorable mention to the Division I all-independent team.

Miles Cracks Top 10 on NDSU Coaching Victories List North Dakota State’s Tim Miles moved into a tie for 10th in coaching victories with NDSU’s fi rst win of the season Nov. 26 over Northern State, and he vaulted all the way to seventh on the list by year’s end. Miles, now with a 63-51 record in four years at North Dakota State, passed cur-rent Utah coach Ray Giacoletti (48 wins) and other former Bison coaches Bud Belk (51 wins) and George Dewey (56 wins). Miles’ 50th win came in his 92nd game as NDSU head coach Dec. 6 in the home opener against Jamestown College. Miles became the sixth fastest coach in Bison history to reach the 50-win plateau.
