North Dakota Hands & Voices making a difference at the Midwest Conference on Deaf EducationThe Midwest Conference on Deaf Education was held in June 2019, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This event is held every other year and co-hosted by the South Dakota and North Dakota Schools for the Deaf and Outreach Programs. Professionals and parents attend the Midwest Conference on Deaf Education to be educated on topics such as monitoring their children’s social and emotional development and transitioning into adulthood (to name a few). The conference left me, a parent of a child with hearingloss, withconfidencethatmychildcanlearn, canthrive, and can succeed.

Like all families, families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing need support. Professionals, like those who attended the Midwest Conference on Deaf Education, can provide effective support. As parents, we need to be able to share feelings, ideas, and information with professionals. These collaborations help our children meet their maximum potential and become productive membersofsociety.ThisyearwasthefirstyearNorthDakota Hands & Voices (ND H&V) attended and had a booth. In doing so, the ND Chapter made valuable connections with other parents in South Dakota that are interested in starting their own chapter. In fact, South Dakota now has a provisional H&V Chapter of their own!

One of the highlights for our chapter was our opportunity to present our 5th annual High Five Award. This is an award created by our chapter to recognize and thank the educators that make a difference in the lives of our children with hearing loss. This year, our awardee, Paula Fitzgerald, Teacher of the Deaf, was in attendance. Paula was nominated by a parent and awarded for her outstanding

workinthefieldofdeafeducation.Specifically, thisparent highlighted Paula’s determination to ensuring that the family’s needs and concerns are her top priority — guaranteeing the family is deciding what is best for their son’s intervention. Thank you, Paula, (and all other professionals) for serving families in our state!

All in all, the conference was a huge success. ND H&V raised awareness for the importance of and availability of family support. We recognized the important role professionals have in the lives of our children and hopefully encouraged them in their work. Finally, we developed relationships with some passionate parents from South Dakota so we can support them as they start their journey to having their own H&V Chapter!

Smoke alarms saves lives. However, people with a hearing loss may not be able to depend on the traditional smoke alarm to alert them to fire.

“Roughly two (2) out of three (3) fire deaths happen in homes with no smoke alarms or the alarms are not working”

The last full week of September is Deaf Awareness Week. The celebration originated in Rome, Italy, in 1958, to draw attention to deaf people, their accomplishments and to promote their rights. During this week, many deaf organizations, schools and individuals hold a variety of activities to educate people about deafness.

As parents, one of the things they need to consider is the assistive technology that is available to them and their child. October has fire safety week October 6-12th so consider what is available for someone with a hearing loss in case of a fire.

WHERE TO FIND EQUIPMENT: Smoke alarms with built in or separate strobe lights can be purchased through companies such as Harris Communications MaxiAids or Hear-More. You can type in a search for smoke alarms for deaf and hard of hearing and several choices will come up.

FEEL THE VIBRATIONS...SEE THE LIGHTS: Smoke alarms with a vibrating pad or flashing light are available for people with a hearing loss. When people with a hearing loss are asleep, a high intensity strobe light may be required along with a pillow or bed shaker to wake them up and alert them to fire conditions so they can escape. Another Thought: Smoke alarms with a strobe light outside the home to catch the attention of neighbors, and emergency call systems for summoning help are also available.
