A Message From Our Board Chair

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am pleased to present the 2010-2011 Annual Report for North Country School and Camp Treetops.

By any measure, the year just passed counts as a landmark. We’ve balanced our ninth consecutive budget, set another record for annual giving ($928,473), and raised almost $4 million in gifts and multi-year pledges. The loyalty and generosity behind these numbers cannot be quantified. Thank you all—alumni, parents, trustees, staff, and friends—not just for your contributions but for your ongoing commitment and support.

We continue to make the most of our resources. Installation of biomass heating plants has cut our consumption of fuel oil by more than 20,000 gallons per year and significantly reduced our carbon footprint. After only one year in operation, the New House has become an integral part of campus. The farm and gardens continue to produce increasing amounts of our own food, as they train young people in practices of healthy and sustainable living. Efforts like these bolster our unique and first-rate programming that keeps both School and Camp fully enrolled with thriving students and campers.

None of this happens without your interest, involvement, and support. For them we are most grateful.

Warm regards,

Matthew DavidsonCTT 62-67, Camp parent 96-05, Trustee 91-present, Board Chair

Greetings from Lake Placid

Dear Friends,

As we approach the end of our first century, the work we do with children is more important than ever. Fostering creativity, forging connections with the natural world, and building self-confidence and resilience are all part and parcel of our work at Camp and School to nurture a child’s physical, social, and cognitive development. Our job, in short, is to partner with families to help children flourish.

In a time of such economic stress and dislocation, it is gratifying to know that our extended community has continued to make giving to Camp and School a high priority. On behalf of all our children, let me thank you for your generosity. Your support allows us to remain a diverse community, with a much reduced carbon footprint, and a unique campus that is both beautiful and child friendly. Additionally, your giving allows us to attract and retain the superb counselors and teachers who follow in the footsteps of Helen and Doug and Walter and Leo in offering stellar programming all year long.

Please know that we take both our history and our responsibility to future generations seriously.

Many thanks again,

David “Hock” HochschartnerHead of School and Camp

downstairs, I saw a girl and her

dad packing their car to head

to another camp. Her duffel bag

looked about four times as big,

she had a large fan, and earbuds

dangled around her neck. It made

me smile, because I knew my kid
