MethodologyAs required, each stone in Stoney Section was assessed by Ms. Debi Hacker and Dr. Michael Trinkleyduring our visit to Wayland December 8 through December 12, 2014. This assessment included a photographand physical assessment for those stones identified as requiring conservation.A critical component of the assessment was assigning a priority to the treatment, ranging from 1 to 3.Priority 1 stones are those which require immediate attention either because the stones are a threatto the public or themselves. The meaning of the former is obvious and might include an obelisk at risk fortoppling, resulting in injury or death. The latter, however, needs some brief explanation. We found manystones that were a threat to themselves stones where further deterioration would significantly escalate thetreatment costs. For example, we found a number of stones exhibiting iron jacking where intervention isrecommended before additional damages occurs. Also included as Priority 1 stones are those that are on theground. This significantly increases the risk of additional damage to the stone damage from pedestriantraffic or landscape maintenance activities in particular.Priority 2 stones are those which require immediate attention, but which are not likely to be a threateither to visitors or themselves. Nevertheless, these are stones that we recommend be dealt with as quickly aspossible, preferably within a year.Priority 3 stones can be delayed for several years in most circumstances without suffering significantadditional damage.It may also be useful to explain that the costs proposed exclude travel, per diem, and lodging. Thereare two primary reasons for this. First it is our standard practice since the cost depends on the number ofstones being treated. For example, if only one stone is being treated that one stone must bear the entire costof travel, per diem, and lodging. Many treatments require multiple days for example, two days may berequired for the epoxy to adequately set to allow further treatment and infills must be moistened for 2-3 daysto prevent shrinkage cracks. Between activities there is much down time which a single stone must support.However, if multiple stones are being treated, it is possible to schedule tasks to prevent down time and thusthe per stone cost of travel, per diem, and lodging is greatly reduced.Results We identified 97 stones in theStoney Section that require conservationintervention. This represents about 28% ofthe stones in this section. Although this is agreat many stones, it is not unusual given theage of the cemeteries and the fact that, as weunderstand it, they have received littleconservation treatment in the past. The totalcost estimated for these treatments is$66,200. While this is a very large sum, it isnot nearly as significant an amount as wehave found at many other cemeteries. In fact,the treatment costs are only $682 per stone a very modest sum to help ensure the long-term preservation of these extraordinaryassets to Wayland.There are 37 Priority 1 stones, 10Priority 2 stones, and 50 Priority 3 stones, asshown in the attached figure.

ConclusionsThe Town of Wayland has an exceptional range of stone motifs and symbolism in the NorthCemetery. This cemetery could play a much larger role in the towns tourism than they do currently, althoughit is necessary to undertake the work necessary to stabilize and repair a number of the markers.It is important to understand that conservation assessments and the work they generate is not a one-time event. It is necessary every 5 to 10 years to re-assess conditions and determine if additional work isrequired. Conservation treatments should be viewed as on-going maintenance, not a one-time expenditure.
